This series of HANDBOOKS OF LINGUISTICS AND COMMUNICATION SCIENCE
is designed to illuminate a field which not only includes general
linguistics and the study of linguistics as applied to specific
languages, but also covers those more recent areas which have
developed from the increasing body of research into the manifold
forms of communicative action and interaction. For "classic"
linguistics there appears to be a need for a review of the state of
the art which will provide a reference base for the rapid advances
in research undertaken from a variety of theoretical standpoints,
while in the more recent branches of communication science the
handbooks will give researchers both an overview and orientation.
To attain these objectives, the series aims for a standard
comparable to that of the leading handbooks in other disciplines,
and to this end strives for comprehensiveness, theoretical
explicitness, reliable documentation of data and findings, and
up-to-date methodology. The editors, both of the series and of the
individual volumes, and the individual contributors, are committed
to this aim. The language of publication is English. The main aim
of the series is to provide an appropriate account of the state of
the art in the various areas of linguistics and communication
science covered by each of the various handbooks; however no
inflexible pre-set limits will is imposed on the scope of each
volume. The series is open-ended, and can thus take account of
further developments in the field. This conception, coupled with
the necessity of allowing adequate time for each volume to be
prepared with the necessary care, means that there is no set
time-table for the publication of the whole series. Each volume is
a self-contained work, complete in itself. The order in which the
handbooks are published does not imply any rank ordering, but is
determined by the way in which the series is organized; the editors
of the whole series enlist a competent editor for each individual
volume. Once the principal editor for a volume has been found, he
or she then has a completely free hand in the choice of co-editors
and contributors. The editors plan each volume independently of the
others, being governed only by general formal principles. The
series editors only intervene where questions of delineation
between individual volumes are concerned. It is felt that this
(modus operandi) is best suited to achieving the objectives of the
series, namely to give a competent account of the present state of
knowledge and of the perception of the problems in the area covered

Das Buch bietet eine umfassende Einfuhrung in den aktuellen Stand
der Medienlinguistik. So werden einerseits grundlegende
kommunikationstheoretische Begriffe der Medienlinguistik
vorgestellt ("Autor," "Medientext," "Intertextualitat" usw.),
andererseits werden - nach einem kurzen historischen Ruckblick -
die wichtigsten sprachlichen Phanomene in den heutigen
deutschsprachigen Massenmedien Presse, Radio und Fernsehen an
aktuellem Beispielmaterial beschrieben (Mundlichkeit und
Schriftlichkeit, das sprachliche Profil des "Moderators," mediale
Textsorten, insbesondere Nachrichten und ihre narratologischen
Aspekte, Standardsprache und Dialekte etc.). Dabei ist auch das
Verhaltnis der Sprache zu anderen Zeichensystemen (Bilder,
Gerausche) zu berucksichtigen. Ein Ausblick auf die "neuen" Medien
soll skizzieren, wie "neue" und "alte" Medien sich zueinander
verhalten. Das Buch stellt eine umfassende Neubearbeitung und
Weiterfuhrung der zweiten Auflage des Goschen-Bandes "Sprache der
Massenmedien" (1990) dar."

Kinder in der Deutschschweiz mussen mit den beiden Sprachvarietaten
Schweizerdeutsch und Hochdeutsch umgehen koennen: Hochdeutsch ist
Schul- und Schriftsprache und der Dialekt schichtubergreifende
Alltagssprache in jeder Situation. Fur die meisten einsprachigen
Kinder ist das unproblematisch - dies beweisen umfangreiche
Studien. Wie sieht die Situation aber bei mehrsprachigen Kindern
aus? Beeinflusst das Nebeneinander von Dialekt und Standard das
Deutschlernen dieser Kinder? Behindert der Dialekt gar den
(Hoch)-Deutscherwerb? Wissen die Kinder im Primarschulalter
uberhaupt, was Hochdeutsch und Schweizerdeutsch ist und wann man
diese beiden Varietaten einsetzt? Oder mischen sie beides ohne
System? Um Antworten auf diese Fragen zu erhalten, analysiert diese
Studie hochdeutsche und schweizerdeutsche Bildergeschichten von
Primarschulkindern hinsichtlich ihrer Sprache. Verschiedene Tests
geben Aufschluss uber das Bewusstsein der Sprachdifferenzierung.
Ein Fragebogen hilft bei der Klarung weiterer wichtiger Faktoren.
Sie leistet somit einen wichtigen Beitrag zur linguistischen und

With the rapidly evolving XML technology and thereby
ever-increasing number of XML documents, the importance of
providing efficient tools for managing these enormous amounts of
data is rising every day. Native XML database systems are such
tools. Like other XML database systems they need indices in order
to provide efficient and fast access to the data. These indices
represent redundant data structures in the database and therefore
have to be kept consistent, whenever the underlying base data is
manipulated. Updating fragments of an XML document with automated,
transparent, and efficient index maintenance is the central theme
of this book. Author Harald Burger first analyses the two most
prominent existing proposals for XML updates, namely the W3C's
proposed extension of XQuery with operations for data manipulation
and XUpdate. He then introduces an efficient and simple way to keep
the indices in an XML DBMS consistent: the Simple Update API for
the native XML database management system Infonyte DB. This book is
addressed to professionals involved in XML and database
development. It is also directed towards researchers in the XML
area and beginning graduate or advanced undergraduate students of
computer science.
The new edition of this textbook provides a comprehensive and
up-to-date introduction to media linguistics. It presents basic
terms in communication theory and describes the major linguistic
phenomena in today's German-language mass media (press, radio, TV,
and the "new media"), including recent examples.
Seit vielen Jahren wird in der Deutschschweiz im fachlichen und
bildungspolitischen Umfeld daruber diskutiert, ab welchem Alter und
in welcher Weise Hochdeutsch erlernt werden soll. Die
schweizerdeutschen Dialekte geniessen einen hohen Stellenwert,
jedoch ubernimmt das Hochdeutsche sowohl in kultureller als auch in
politischer Hinsicht eine wichtige Rolle. Lange Zeit begann der
gesteuerte Hochdeutscherwerb in der Deutschschweiz fruhestens ab
der ersten Primarklasse. Seit einigen Jahren wird nun aber in
verschiedenen Kindergarten Hochdeutsch gesprochen. Unterstutzt
diese Unterrichtssprache die Kinder bei einem spontanen und
emotionalen Umgang mit dem Hochdeutschen? Welche Kinder profitieren
in besonderem Masse von Hochdeutsch im Kindergarten und welche
haben Muhe damit? Wie gehen die Eltern und Lehrpersonen mit dieser
Unterrichtssprache um? Diese Studie vergleicht die
Hochdeutschkompetenzen von Kindern aus einem
Hochdeutsch-Kindergarten mit denjenigen von Kindern aus einem
Schweizerdeutsch-Kindergarten beim Schuleintritt. Im Rahmen einer
linguistischen Analyse der kindlichen Sprachdaten und Befragungen
von Eltern und Lehrpersonen geht sie den obigen Fragen nach und
leistet damit einen Beitrag zum aktuellen Diskurs um die
Unterrichtssprache Hochdeutsch.
