Technology, Innovation and Healthcare - An Evolving Relationship (Hardcover): Bernadette J. Richards, Mark Taylor, Susannah... Technology, Innovation and Healthcare - An Evolving Relationship (Hardcover)
Bernadette J. Richards, Mark Taylor, Susannah Sage Jacobson
R2,427 Discovery Miles 24 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This timely book emphasizes the importance of regulation in enabling and channelling innovation at a time when technology is increasingly embedded in healthcare. It considers the adequacy of current regulatory approaches, identifying apparent gaps, risks and liabilities, and discusses how these might be collectively addressed. The authors present possible solutions that balance the protection and promotion of public trust in healthcare against enabling technological progress and disruptive innovation. Offering both a theoretical and practical approach to challenges at the intersection of healthcare, law and technology, this thought-provoking book explores broad questions of regulation and innovation before analysing contextual applications of these topics. It moves from a wide-ranging consideration of the polycentric and changing nature of health regulation through to a more specific examination of topics including patient consent, the role of device representatives, privacy, artificial intelligence and big data. Providing an international perspective, Technology, Innovation and Healthcare will be a valuable resource for scholars and students of health law, innovation, technology law, law and development and law and society. It will also be of benefit to lawyers, healthcare professionals, technology developers and policy makers, seeking to better integrate technology with healthcare.

R604 Discovery Miles 6 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

New York Times bestseller Journey into the universe through the most spectacular sights in astronomy in stereoscopic 3D Welcome to the Universe in 3D takes you on a grand tour of the observable universe, guiding you through the most spectacular sights in the cosmos-in breathtaking 3D. Presenting a rich array of stereoscopic color images, which can be viewed in 3D using a special stereo viewer that folds easily out of the cover of the book, this book reveals your cosmic environment as you have never seen it before. Astronomy is the story of how humankind's perception of the two-dimensional dome of the sky evolved into a far deeper comprehension of an expanding three-dimensional cosmos. This book invites you to take part in this story by exploring the universe in depth, as revealed by cutting-edge astronomical research and observations. You will journey from the Moon through the solar system, out to exoplanets, distant nebulas, and galaxy clusters, until you finally reach the cosmic microwave background radiation (or CMB), the most distant light we can observe. The distances to these celestial wonders range from 1.3 light-seconds to 13.8 billion light-years. Along the way, the authors explain the fascinating features of what you are seeing, including how the 3D images were made using the same technique that early astronomers devised to measure distances to objects in space. The dramatic 3D images in this one-of-a-kind book will astonish you, extending your vision out to the farthest reaches of the universe. You will never look up into the night sky the same way again.

R180 R149 Discovery Miles 1 490 Save R31 (17%) Ships in 4 - 8 working days

Discover and understand the different Christian views of what heaven will be like. Christians from a variety of denominations and traditions are in middle of an important conversation about the final destiny of the saved. Scholars such as N. T. Wright and J. Richard Middleton have pushed back against the traditional view of heaven, and now some Christians are pushing back against them for fear that talk about the earthiness of our final hope distracts our attention from Jesus. In the familiar Counterpoints format, Four Views on Heaven brings together a well-rounded discussion and highlights similarities and differences of the current views on heaven. Each author presents their strongest biblical case for their position, followed by responses and a rejoinder that model a respectful tone. Positions and contributors include: Traditional Heaven - our destiny is to leave earth and live forever in heaven where we will rest, worship, and serve God (John S. Feinberg) Restored Earth - emphasizes that the saved will live forever with Jesus on this restored planet, enjoying ordinary human activities in our redeemed state. (J. Richard Middleton) Heavenly Earth - a balanced view that seeks to highlight both the strengths and weaknesses of the heavenly and earthly views (Michael Allen). Roman Catholic Beatific Vision - stresses the intellectual component of salvation, though it encompasses the whole of human experience of joy, happiness coming from seeing God finally face-to-face (Peter Kreeft). The Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique of scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different positions on a specific issue and form their own, educated opinion.

Early Stages of Atlantic Fishes - An Identification Guide for the Western Central North Atlantic, Two Volume Set (Hardcover):... Early Stages of Atlantic Fishes - An Identification Guide for the Western Central North Atlantic, Two Volume Set (Hardcover)
William J. Richards
R14,810 Discovery Miles 148 100 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Early Life History (ELH) of marine fishes in Fishing Area 31, which includes the western central North Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico, has remained incomplete over the years. This certainly wasnot because of any lack of interest, but rather because of the lack of a comprehensive merging of studies that would provide us with a broad understanding, as well as identify gaps in the literature.

Early Stages of Atlantic Fishes: An Identification Guide for the Western Central North Atlantic fills the void in an exceptionally thorough fashion. Inside you will find contributions from more than 70 international experts, edited by one of the world s most respected fishery scientists. This is the definitive reference covering the ELH of those fishes found in that part of the Atlantic, which stretches across the territorial waters of more than 40 countries.

This two-volume masterwork covers the eggs, larvae, and juveniles of all families known to inhabit this area. It brings together published information of merit, plus original research results providing information designed to identify these ELH stages generally collected by plankton nets. Chapters in the volume are devoted to every one of the 214 families. Each includes a brief synopsis of the family, early life-stage identification, meristic data tables, and significant accounts of lower taxa, with one page giving detailed information and the facing page devoted to illustrations. Food Plant Sanitation (Hardcover): Y H Hui, L. Bernard Bruinsma, J. Richard Gorham, Wai-Kit Nip, Phillip S. Tong, Phil Ventresca Food Plant Sanitation (Hardcover)
Y H Hui, L. Bernard Bruinsma, J. Richard Gorham, Wai-Kit Nip, Phillip S. Tong, …
R9,155 Discovery Miles 91 550 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Comprehensive and accessible, Food Plant Sanitation presents fundamental principles and applications that are essential for food production safety. It provides basic, practical information on the daily operations in a food processing plant and reviews some of the industry's most recent developments. The book is unique from others on the topic in that it features the perspectives of more than 30 food safety experts from government, academia, and the food industry. These authorities cover nine major areas of interest:
Federal and state regulations and guidelines
Major biological and nonbiological contaminants
Cleaning a food plant
Sanitation and worker safety
Housekeeping
Product quality
Commodity processing
Retail food sanitation
Enforcement
In addition to covering primary sanitation practices, the book touches on the latest information on the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) program. The mention of the HACCP is of particular importance because it is imperative that a food processing plant has put in place an acceptable sanitation program on principle and in practice before considering the program. Additional topics include the spread of bacterial and viral foodborne diseases, the risks from protozoa and nematodes in food production, and the design and development of self-inspection programs.

Major Nation-States in the European Union (Paperback): J. Richard Piper Major Nation-States in the European Union (Paperback)
J. Richard Piper
R3,185 Discovery Miles 31 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Integrating the study of individual European nation-states within the framework of the European Union, this unique new text is essentially two books in one: a book on the EU and a comparative introduction to European politics. This text provides more value to students by combining two texts in one, but engages student interest and facilitates learning through a variety of useful features. Role-playing exercises encourage participation and test students' critical thinking skills, while an emphasis on the people behind the politics "humanizes" material and provides lively insights into contemporary European politics and society. To ensure student understanding, there is extensive material comparing and contrasting EU states to one another and to the United States, a thorough glossary at the end of the book, and an abundance of examples, tables, charts, and graphs to illustrate and extend the discussions.

Leading Teams - Setting the Stage for Great Performances (Hardcover): J.Richard Hackman Leading Teams - Setting the Stage for Great Performances (Hardcover)
J.Richard Hackman
R785 R678 Discovery Miles 6 780 Save R107 (14%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Richard Hackman, one of the world's leading experts on group and organizational behavior, argues that teams perform at their best when leaders create conditions that allow them to manage themselves effectively. Leading Teams is not about subscribing to a specific formula or leadership style, says Hackman. Rather, it is about applying a concise set of guiding principles to each unique group situation--and doing so in the leader's own idiosyncratic way. Based on extensive research and using compelling examples ranging from orchestras to airline cockpit crews, Leading Teams identifies five essential conditions--a stable team, a clear and engaging direction, an enabling team structure, a supportive organizational context, and the availability of competent coaching--that greatly enhance the likelihood of team success. The book offers a practical framework that leaders can use to muster personal skills and organizational resources to create and sustain the five key conditions and shows how those conditions can launch a team onto a trajectory of increasing effectiveness. Authoritative and astutely realistic, Leading Teams offers a new and provocative way of thinking about and leading work teams in any organizational setting.

Attitudes and Decisions (Paperback): J.Richard Eiser, Joop van der Pligt Attitudes and Decisions (Paperback)
J.Richard Eiser, Joop van der Pligt
R1,588 Discovery Miles 15 880 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The concept of attitude has long been a central part of social psychological theories. It is important in other disciplines too, such as economics, business studies, politics and sociology. Originally published in 1988, the authors of this text show how attitudes and motives are crucial in human decision-making, and explore the relationship between them. They look closely at the real context of people's attitudes and behaviour, pointing out that attitudes are both a social product and an intrinsic part of social action. The authors show that theories of judgment, attitudes, attribution and decision-making can make important contributions to social issues such as the employment of nuclear energy, the storage of nuclear waste, health behaviour and medical decision-making. They emphasize that social psychology is relevant to a wide variety of social issues, deriving from the theoretical and distinctive methods that social psychology has developed.

The Impact of the Global Financial Crisis on Emerging Financial Markets (Hardcover): Jonathan Batten, Peter G Szilagyi The Impact of the Global Financial Crisis on Emerging Financial Markets (Hardcover)
Jonathan Batten, Peter G Szilagyi; Series edited by Robert Thornton, J.Richard Aronson
R4,951 Discovery Miles 49 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Global Financial Crisis of 2007-2009 has highlighted the resilience of the financial markets and broader economies from the developing world. This outcome owes much to the bitter experience and economic strategies developed and implemented at both a national and international level following the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997-1998. The objective of this volume is to investigate and assess the impact and response to the crisis from an emerging markets perspective including asset pricing, contagion, financial intermediation, market structure and regulation. Our hope is that the assembled papers will offer clear insights into the complex financial arrangements that now link emerging and developed financial markets in the current economic environment. The volume spans four dimensions: first, a series of background studies offer explanations of the causes and impacts of the crisis on emerging markets more generally; then, implications are considered. The third and final sections provide insights from regional and country-specific perspectives.

Abraham`s Silence - The Binding of Isaac, the Suffering of Job, and How to Talk Back to God (Paperback): J. Richard Middleton Abraham`s Silence - The Binding of Isaac, the Suffering of Job, and How to Talk Back to God (Paperback)
J. Richard Middleton
R650 R528 Discovery Miles 5 280 Save R122 (19%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

It is traditional to think we should praise Abraham for his willingness to sacrifice his son as proof of his love for God. But have we misread the point of the story? Is it possible that a careful reading of Genesis 22 could reveal that God was not pleased with Abraham's silent obedience? Widely respected biblical theologian, creative thinker, and public speaker J. Richard Middleton suggests we have misread and misapplied the story of the binding of Isaac and shows that God desires something other than silent obedience in difficult times. Middleton focuses on the ethical and theological problem of Abraham's silence and explores the rich biblical tradition of vigorous prayer, including the lament psalms, as a resource for faith. Middleton also examines the book of Job in terms of God validating Job's lament as "right speech," showing how the vocal Job provides an alternative to the silent Abraham. This book provides a fresh interpretation of Genesis 22 and reinforces the church's resurgent interest in lament as an appropriate response to God.

The Living Organ Donor as Patient - Theory and Practice (Hardcover): Lainie Friedman Ross, J. Richard Thistlethwaite, Jr. The Living Organ Donor as Patient - Theory and Practice (Hardcover)
Lainie Friedman Ross, J. Richard Thistlethwaite, Jr.
R1,681 Discovery Miles 16 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

When Joseph Murray performed the first successful living kidney donor transplant in 1954, he thought this would be a temporary stopgap. Today, we are no closer to the goal of adequate organ supply without living donors-if anything, the supply-demand ratio is worse. While most research on the ethics of organ transplantation focuses on how to allocate organs as a scarce medical resource, the ethical treatment of organ donors themselves has been relatively neglected. In The Living Organ Donor as Patient: Theory and Practice, Lainie Friedman Ross and J. Richard Thistlethwaite, Jr. argue that living donor organ transplantation can be ethical provided that we treat living solid organ donors as patients in their own right. Ross and Thistlethwaite develop a five-principle framework to examine some of the attempts to increase living donation. It uses the three principles of the Belmont Report: respect for persons, beneficence, and justice modified to organ transplantation, as well as the principles of vulnerability and special relationships creating special obligations. Their approach requires that the transplant community fully embrace current and prospective living organ donors as patients to whom we have special obligations. Only when living organ donors are regarded as patients in their own right and have a living donor advocate team dedicated to their well-being can the moral limits of living solid organ donation be realized and living donors be given the full respect and care they deserve.

J.Richard Aronson, Harriet L. Parmet, Robert Thornton
R2,957 Discovery Miles 29 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

For over fifty years, Eli Schwartz has inspired generations of economists through his prolific publications and dedicated in teaching. In 2008, the Martindale Center for the Study of Private Enterprise at Lehigh University invited prominent academics and practitioners-including Nobel Prize recipients, Robert Solow and Harry Markowitz, and former Chairman of the Economic Advisers to Ronald Reagan, Murray Weidenbaum-to contribute pieces that reflect their own approaches to issues that Schwartz has explored over the long span of his career. The twelve original essays cover a range of topics, including tax reform, corporate finance, fiscal policy, banking, economic growth, and globalization, representing a variety of methodologies, including economic theory, econometrics, and case analysis. The collection emphasizes the underlying connections among seemingly disparate facets of economic activity, and underscores the tremendous influence of Schwartz on economic analysis, policy, and leadership today.
