Foundations of Bayesianism (Hardcover, 2002 ed.): D. Corfield, J. Williamson Foundations of Bayesianism (Hardcover, 2002 ed.)
D. Corfield, J. Williamson
R4,073 Discovery Miles 40 730 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Foundations of Bayesianism is an authoritative collection of papers addressing the key challenges that face the Bayesian interpretation of probability today.
Some of these papers seek to clarify the relationships between Bayesian, causal and logical reasoning. Others consider the application of Bayesianism to artificial intelligence, decision theory, statistics and the philosophy of science and mathematics. The volume includes important criticisms of Bayesian reasoning and also gives an insight into some of the points of disagreement amongst advocates of the Bayesian approach. The upshot is a plethora of new problems and directions for Bayesians to pursue.

The book will be of interest to graduate students or researchers who wish to learn more about Bayesianism than can be provided by introductory textbooks to the subject. Those involved with the applications of Bayesian reasoning will find essential discussion on the validity of Bayesianism and its limits, while philosophers and others interested in pure reasoning will find new ideas on normativity and the logic of belief.

Duce: The Contradictions of Power - The Political Leadership of Benito Mussolini (Hardcover): Peter J. Williamson Duce: The Contradictions of Power - The Political Leadership of Benito Mussolini (Hardcover)
Peter J. Williamson
R842 Discovery Miles 8 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Eighty years after the fall of Benito Mussolini, controversy remains about what his dictatorship represented. This reflects the different sides to the Duce's leadership: while adept at nurturing and enforcing his personal political power, Mussolini's lack of insight into the requirements of governance prevented him from converting this power into influence to achieve his goals. His efforts to maintain the support of Italy's conservative elites--economic, social and political--also created tensions with his radical Fascist ambitions, diminishing the momentum behind his regime. Mussolini is frequently portrayed as a charismatic leader, but his rule was secured principally by coercion, violence and a 'spoils system'. Nonetheless, his personality cult had significant popular appeal, even if based upon a political myth. This enabled him to consolidate his position and to dominate his Fascist colleagues--but at a price of over-centralised, dysfunctional decision-making. In this book, the first comprehensive English- language study of Mussolini in nearly two decades, Peter J. Williamson brings to life the contradictions within the Duce's leadership. Using a wide range of sources, Williamson reveals how these conflicts impeded the dictator's ambitions, leaving him increasingly frustrated, all while most Italians endured the severe privations of both failure and Fascism.

The Competitive Advantage of Emerging Market Multinationals (Hardcover, New): Peter J. Williamson, Ravi Ramamurti, Afonso... The Competitive Advantage of Emerging Market Multinationals (Hardcover, New)
Peter J. Williamson, Ravi Ramamurti, Afonso Fleury, Maria Tereza Leme Fleury
R2,128 Discovery Miles 21 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Multinationals from Brazil, Russia, India and China, known as the BRIC countries, are a new and powerful force in global competition and are challenging the incumbency of much older global companies from the developed world. Emerging market multinational enterprises (EMNEs) now account for a quarter of foreign investment in the world, are a prolific source of innovation and make almost one in three cross-border acquisitions globally. Despite this, traditional theories of international business do not provide a satisfactory explanation of their behaviour or performance. The authors of this book shine new light on the rise of the EMNEs and how they have built a competitive advantage through innovation, novel configurations of their international value chains and the acquisition of companies overseas. Any manager, policy maker or researcher who wishes to understand the emergence of this new breed of multinational will find this book an invaluable resource.

Biomagnetism - An Interdisciplinary Approach (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1983): Samuel J. Williamson,... Biomagnetism - An Interdisciplinary Approach (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1983)
Samuel J. Williamson, Gian-Luca Romani, Lloyd Kaufman, Ivo Modena
R3,949 Discovery Miles 39 490 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Biomagnetism is the study of magnetic fields that originate in biological systems. This is a relatively new discipline that has attracted considerable interest throughout the scientific commu- ty. The study of biomagnetic fields requires the use of techniques and concepts drawn from widely disparate scientific disciplines. To make these techniques and concepts available to a wide spectrum of the scientific community, a NATO Advanced study Institute on B- magnetism was held near Frascati at Grottaferrata, Italy, in S- tember 1982. This volume is based on the lectures delivered by scholars representing many different scientific areas, ranging from solid state physics to psychology. It attempts to preserve the - herent development of concepts drawn from physiology, psychology, biology, physics, medicine, occupational health and geology that was evident during the Institute. The reader will quickly become aware that the progress in biomagnetism over the past decade was due principally to the efforts of interdisciplinary teams of sci- tists. One of the purposes of this volume is to make all of the basic principles and findings of biomagnetism available in one place, so that scientists who have already embarked on the study of biomagnetism or who plan to do so in the near future will have them available for study and reference. Each section of this volume was written by a recognized expert who lectured at the Institute on the topics he describes here.

Varieties of Corporatism - A Conceptual Discussion (Paperback): Peter J. Williamson Varieties of Corporatism - A Conceptual Discussion (Paperback)
Peter J. Williamson
R1,027 Discovery Miles 10 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Originally published in 1985, this book provides a comprehensive discussion of the concept of corporatism. It seeks to develop models of the different types of corporatism against the background of a general model. It represents a systematic attempt to clarify, rather than simply discuss, the concept of corporatism in its various usages. It examines the three varieties of corporatism: a body of nineteenth- and twentieth-century prescriptive economic and social thought; the practice of certain authoritarian regimes with private ownership of the means of production and wage labour; and a theoretical tool of analysis employed to study relations between organised groups and the state in ostensibly liberal democracies. It draws on a wide range of historical and contemporary writing on the subject, and includes a detailed study of the ideas behind and nature of corporatism in Fascist Italy and in Portugal under Salazar and Caetano. The discussion of the varieties of corporatism is clearly related to debates in the social sciences on its nature.

Advances in Biomagnetism (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1989): Samual J. Williamson, Manfried Hoke Advances in Biomagnetism (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1989)
Samual J. Williamson, Manfried Hoke
R3,471 Discovery Miles 34 710 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume celebrates the 20th anniversary of the first application of superconducting mag- netic field sensors to biomagnetism by providing a comprehensive survey of advances in biomag- netic research worldwide. "Biomagnetism" is the investigation of biological processes as reflected by accompanying magnetic fields. It embraces basic and clinical research, as well as applications in medicine and occupational health. The contents of this book are the proceedings of the 7th Interna- tional Conference on Biomagnetism, held from August 13 through 18, 1989, at New York Univer- sity - in the heart of the Greenwich Village area of Manhattan. Topics include studies of the brain, heart, liver, lungs, muscle, tissue in vitro, advances in instrumentation, development of theory, and related topics. Interdisciplinary in emphasis, this presentation begins with a set of tutorials by five outstand- ing professors: John Wikswo, Toivo Katila, Gian Luca Romani, Gerhard Stroink, and Stephen Swithenby. These tutorials were especially prepared to serve as an introduction for readers who are relatively new to the subject. They are followed by three presentations that mark the 20th anniver- sary of the first application of a SQUID sensor to biomagnetism (the acronyn SQUID is shorthand for superconducting quantum interference device). Articles by James Zimmerman and Edgar Edel- sack look back to the catalytic process that affected a marriage between Zimmerman's SQUID and David Cohen's magnetically shielded room.

R966 Discovery Miles 9 660 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

To succeed in the face of disruptive competition, companies will need to harness the power of a wide range of partners who can bring different skills, experience, capacity, and their own networks to the task. With the advent of new technologies, rapidly changing customer needs, and emerging competitors, companies across more and more industries are seeing their time-honored ways of making money under threat. In this book, Arnoud De Meyer and Peter J. Williamson explain how business can meet these challenges by building a large and dynamic ecosystem of partners that reinforce, strengthen, and encourage innovation in the face of ongoing disruption. While traditional companies know how to assemble and manage supply chains, leading the development of a vibrant ecosystem requires a different set of capabilities. Ecosystem Edge illustrates how executives need to leave notions of command and control behind in favor of strategies that will attract partners, stimulate learning, and promote the overall health of the network. To understand the practical steps executives can take to achieve this, the authors focus on eight core examples that cross industries and continents: Alibaba Group, Amazon.com, ARM, athenahealth, Dassault Systèmes S.E., The Guardian, Rolls-Royce, and Thomson Reuters. By following the principles outlined in this book, leaders can learn how to unlock rapid innovation, tap into new and original sources of value, and practice organizational flexibility. As a result, companies can gain the ecosystem edge, a key advantage in responding to the challenges of disruption that business sees all around it today.
