In the autumn of 2010, a little-known New Zealander called Joe Schmidt took over as head coach at Leinster. He had never been in charge of a professional team. After Leinster lost three of their first four games, a prominent Irish rugby pundit speculated that Schmidt had 'lost the dressing room'. Nine years on, Joe Schmidt has stepped down as Ireland coach having achieved success on a scale never before seen in Irish rugby. Two Heineken Cups in three seasons with Leinster. Three Six Nations championships in six seasons with Ireland, including the Grand Slam in 2018. And a host of firsts: the first Irish victory in South Africa; the first Irish defeat of the All Blacks, and then a second; and Ireland's first number 1 world ranking. Along the way, Schmidt became a byword for precision and focus in coaching, remarkable attention to detail and the highest of standards. But who is Joe Schmidt? In Ordinary Joe, Schmidt tells the story of his life and influences: the experiences and management ideas that made him the coach, and the man, that he is today. And his diaries of the 2018 Grand Slam and the 2019 Rugby World Cup provide a brilliantly intimate insight into the stresses and joys of coaching a national team in victory and defeat. From the small towns in New Zealand's North Island where he played barefoot rugby and jostled around the dinner table with seven siblings, to the training grounds and video rooms where he consistently kept his teams a step ahead of the opposition, Ordinary Joe reveals an ordinary man who has helped his teams to achieve extraordinary things.
Europe stares into the abyss. Plague and famine stalk the land, monsters lurk in every shadow and greedy princes care for nothing but their own ambitions. Only one thing is certain: the elves will come again, and they will eat everyone. Sometimes, only the darkest paths lead towards the light. Paths on which the righteous will not dare to tread . . . And so, buried beneath the sacred splendour of the Celestial Palace, is the secret Chapel of the Holy Expediency. For its congregation of convicted monsters there are no sins that have not been committed, no lines that will not be crossed, and no mission that cannot be turned into a disastrous bloodbath. Now the hapless Brother Diaz must somehow bind the worst of the worst to a higher cause: to put a thief on the throne of Troy, and unite the sundered church against the coming apocalypse. When you're headed through hell, you need the devils on your side.
The Penguin Classics Marvel Collection presents the origin stories, seminal tales, and characters of the Marvel Universe to explore Marvel's transformative and timeless influence on an entire genre of fantasy. It is impossible to imagine American popular culture without Marvel Comics. For decades, Marvel has published groundbreaking visual narratives that sustain attention on multiple levels: as metaphors for the experience of difference and otherness; as meditations on the fluid nature of identity; and as high-water marks in the artistic tradition of American cartooning, to name a few. Drawing upon multiple comic book series, this collection includes Captain America's very first appearances from 1941 alongside key examples of his first solo stories of the 1960s, in which Steve Rogers, the newly resurrected hero of World War II, searches to find his place in a new and unfamiliar world. As the contents reveal, the transformations of this American icon thus mark parallel transformations in the nation itself. A foreword by Gene Luen Yang and scholarly introductions and apparatus by Ben Saunders offer further insight into the enduring significance of Captain America and classic Marvel comics. The Penguin Classics black spine paperback features full-colour art throughout.

The book is divided into three sections: The first section covers basic materials (from choice of suture materials to why powdered gloves can cause latex allergy), instruments (such as why scissors are right or left handed) and basic techniques (for example, how to deliberately tie a slip knot and how to avoid doing so accidentally!). The second section covers local anaesthetic agents and techniques. The third section describes the most commonly performed operations and the complications that may be encountered including how to avoid and how to deal with them. There are also chapters that deal with the highly important but often neglected topics of biometry and orbital and lens implant biomaterials and design. Throughout, the scientific basis has been emphasized where possible. Professionals who work with ophthalmic patients such as nursing staff and optometrists will also find a clear description of the commonly performed procedures to be of interest. * an easy-to-use book, rectifying any immediate gaps in surgical knowledge * a highly practical text which covers everything that the ophthalmic trainee needs to know * beautifully illustrated text, covering all the basic procedures from anesthesia to instruments, wounds and their aftercare to the most commonly performed ophthalmic operations
Migraine treatment improved considerably with the advent of the
'triptans' in the 1990s. While the drugs used previously for
headache treatment had efficacy, some compounds had bothersome side
effects and their overuse could lead to severe complications. In
the early days of the triptans, it was widely presumed that
migraine was no longer a treatment problem. However, it has
gradually been recognized that a significant proportion of patients
are not responsive to triptans or do not tolerate them. It is now
clear that, even with effective treatment, patients with frequent
migraine attacks are not treated well exclusively with acute
medications. This is partly because patients are still bothered by
the attacks and partly because frequent intake of acute medication
may result in medication-overuse headache. These problems have led
to a renewed interest in preventive migraine drugs.

More than any other textbook on the market, "Play and Child Development, Fourth Edition," ties play directly to child development. The authors address the full spectrum of play-related topics and seamlessly blend research, theory, and practical applications throughout this developmentally-based resource. Readers will learn about historical, theoretical, and practical approaches to promoting development through integrated play and learning approaches across various age or developmental levels. The book analyzes play theories and play therapy; presents a history of play; and discusses current play trends. It explores ways to create safe play environments for all children, and how to weave play into school curricula. Finally, the authors examine the role of adults in leading and encouraging children's natural tendencies toward learning by playing. Special coverage includes a full chapter on play and children with disabilities, and the value of field trips in supporting learning. This edition offers expanded and/or updated coverage on evidence based play theory, child development, play environments, and early play-based curricula for children of all abilities in various learning contexts. All content in the text is purposefully arranged to guide its readers through key and core topics leading to a comprehensive understanding of play intended to help prepare pre-service teachers to lead and support children's play in a number of contexts: preschools, elementary schools, park systems, and research programs. |
