For those living in the Soviet Union, Orwell's masterpieces, Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four, were not dystopias, but accurate depictions of reality. Here, the Orwell scholar and expert on Russian politics, Masha Karp – Russian Features Editor at the BBC World Service for over a decade – explores how Orwell's work was received in Russia, when it percolated into the country even under censorship. Suggesting a new approach to the controversial ‘Orwell’s list’ of 1949, Karp puts into context the articles and letters written by Orwell at the time. She sheds light on how the ideas of totalitarianism exposed in Orwell’s writing took root in Russia and, in doing so, helps us to understand the contemporary political reality. As Vladimir Putin's actions continue to shock the West, it is clear we are witnessing the next transformation of totalitarianism, as predicted and described by Orwell. Now, over 70 years after Orwell's death, his writing, at least as far as Russia is concerned, remains as timely and urgent as it has ever been.

Ivan Karp
R6,682 Discovery Miles 66 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Fields of Change is a study of the means by which the Iteso adapted to the imposition of colonial rule and the loss of political independence. It explores their pacification and incorporation into a colonial state and the effects that these processes have had on Iteso territorial and political systems. At the same time it examines the way in which the political system both affected and was affected by other aspects of the Iteso social system, most notably in the fields of religion, descent and domestic kinship. There are many fitness books devoted to getting a better body. There are also many books devoted to the mindfulness, inside-out approach to success, several of which focus on exercise. However, there has not been a book that turns the inside-out concept on its head (pun intended), taking an outside-in approach to show how strengthening the body first leads to a stronger mind and inner self. Work Out fills that void, first by explaining how exercise creates the sound mind and changes us on the inside and then by describing the workouts to create the sound body.

When the United States emerged as a world power in the years before the Civil War, the men who presided over the nation's triumphant territorial and economic expansion were largely southern slaveholders. As presidents, cabinet officers, and diplomats, slaveholding leaders controlled the main levers of foreign policy inside an increasingly powerful American state. This Vast Southern Empire explores the international vision and strategic operations of these southerners at the commanding heights of American politics. For proslavery leaders like John C. Calhoun and Jefferson Davis, the nineteenth-century world was torn between two hostile forces: a rising movement against bondage, and an Atlantic plantation system that was larger and more productive than ever before. In this great struggle, southern statesmen saw the United States as slavery's most powerful champion. Overcoming traditional qualms about a strong central government, slaveholding leaders harnessed the power of the state to defend slavery abroad. During the antebellum years, they worked energetically to modernize the U.S. military, while steering American diplomacy to protect slavery in Brazil, Cuba, and the Republic of Texas. As Matthew Karp demonstrates, these leaders were nationalists, not separatists. Their "vast southern empire" was not an independent South but the entire United States, and only the election of Abraham Lincoln broke their grip on national power. Fortified by years at the helm of U.S. foreign affairs, slaveholding elites formed their own Confederacy-not only as a desperate effort to preserve their property but as a confident bid to shape the future of the Atlantic world.

Methods for Sustainability Research (Hardcover): Janette Hartz-Karp, Dora Marinova Methods for Sustainability Research (Hardcover)
Janette Hartz-Karp, Dora Marinova
R3,711 Discovery Miles 37 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book offers a collection of methods and approaches aimed at resolving some of humanity's most pressing problems on a local and global level. Many of the techniques are practical, with straightforward application and demonstrated positive outcomes, while others are more visionary. Important for transitioning to a more sustainable world, these methods allow for the constructive challenging of existing Western development and governance. The four specific areas covered are: increasing the sustainability of cities, improving governance for sustainability, transitioning to more sustainable economies and encouraging sustainable living. Designing methodologies for change requires competence and knowledge, combined with courage to experiment and willingness to address a challenge. This book provides much-needed methodological solutions, which will have direct implications for the way policies are developed and decisions are made. It challenges many established notions and practices, such as democracy, innovation, urban planning, community participation and marketing. Innovative and creative, the approaches described in this book will be of particular interest to those at the frontier of knowledge development. With 30 contributors from 12 countries, the book will appeal to a global readership, including academics, professionals, practitioners, policy-makers, activists, civil society and anyone interested in sustainability. Contributors include: G. Allegretti, T. Atlee, A. Blinov, D. Bogueva, T. Bouricius, G. Burke, J. Byrne, P. Devereux, C. Eon, D. Galloway, L. Gorissen, X. Guo, J. Hartz-Karp, C. Hendrigan, K. Teacher Quality and Teacher Education Quality - Accreditation from a Global Perspective (Hardcover): Nicholas Michelli, Robin... Teacher Quality and Teacher Education Quality - Accreditation from a Global Perspective (Hardcover)
Nicholas Michelli, Robin Dada, Deborah Eldridge, Rana Tamim, Karen Karp
R4,448 Discovery Miles 44 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Accreditation of teacher education programs is increasingly embraced internationally and is being modeled after the American experience, despite criticisms from some in the field of teacher education in the United States. This book examines the transformation of accreditation and the interest and perception of nations and regions choosing to use the model in their own culture, including the Middle East and Gulf Region, South America, and the United Kingdom. Its distinctive edge is the juxtaposition of three sectors: quality assurance/accreditation, teacher preparation, and global/international experiences. The authors address how the adoption of a universal requirement for accreditation embraces a particular view of what teacher quality means. The emphasis on the development of teacher preparation in concert with accreditation is of academic interest to scholars in the United States and abroad. The experiences and voices of teacher educators as international colleagues in a global climate of accountability brings a fresh perspective on shared challenges.

Public Opinion and Democracy in Transitional Regimes - A Comparative Perspective (Hardcover): Juliet Pietsch, Michael Miller,... Public Opinion and Democracy in Transitional Regimes - A Comparative Perspective (Hardcover)
Juliet Pietsch, Michael Miller, Jeffrey Karp
R4,129 Discovery Miles 41 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Despite the enthusiasm surrounding the Colour Revolutions and the Arab Spring, the world's share of democracies has stagnated over the past 15 years. The steady rise of China, Russia, and Iran has also led to warnings of a resurgence of "authoritarian great powers", especially in light of the financial crisis centred in the USA and Western Europe. On the positive side, however, democracy remains remarkably popular as an ideal. In the Global barometer's most recent survey, two out of three respondents say democracy is their most favoured political system, including a majority in 49 of the 55 countries. Yet there is evidence, much expanded upon in this edited collection, that commitments to liberal democracy in practice are not as strong. Nominally pro-democratic citizens frequently favour limitations on electoral accountability and individual rights in the service of improved governance or economic growth. Further, there are rising concerns that many citizens, especially across the developing world, are turning away from democracy out of frustration with democratic performance. In contrast to many transitional regimes, the more established democracies appear to be losing support among their highly educated citizens. The contributions in this edited collection compare how democracy is understood and experienced in transitioning regimes and established democracies. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Elections, Public Opinion and Parties.

The Politics of Destroying Surplus Small Arms - Inconspicuous Disarmament (Hardcover, New): Aaron Karp The Politics of Destroying Surplus Small Arms - Inconspicuous Disarmament (Hardcover, New)
Aaron Karp
R4,441 Discovery Miles 44 410 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Although it receives much less attention than better known disarmament processes, the destruction of small arms is reshaping the military arsenals of the world. Out of roughly 200 modern military small arms world-wide, about 500,000 are destroyed every year. The commitment of major governments and international organizations makes small arms destruction is a permanent addition to the global disarmament repertoire. But the prospects for greater military small arms disarmament may be declining, as war in Afghanistan and Iraq create unprecedented demand for second-hand weaponry.

Inconspicuous disarmament of small arms and ammunition is reshaping the global picture of firearms, light weapons and ammunition. The process is far from comprehensive, but much more than cosmetic. Small arms destruction is here to stay, but its contributions may be fleeting. This book is the first full-length examination of the issue. The case studies in this volume examine the politics of military small arms disarmament. When, they ask, is surplus destruction most likely? And what can be done to make destruction more likely and more effective?

Case studies examine small arms destruction by NATO and the OSCE, and in Bulgaria, Cambodia, Germany, Kazakhstan, Papua New Guinea, Romania, Serbia, Ukraine and others.

This book was published as a special issue of Contemporary Security Policy.

Global Insurgency and the Future of Armed Conflict - Debating Fourth-Generation Warfare (Hardcover): Aaron Karp, Regina Karp,... Global Insurgency and the Future of Armed Conflict - Debating Fourth-Generation Warfare (Hardcover)
Aaron Karp, Regina Karp, Terry Terriff
R4,291 Discovery Miles 42 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume covers a timely debate in contemporary security studies: can armed forces adjust to the rising challenge of insurgency and terrorism, the greatest transformation in warfare since the birth of the international system? Containing essays by leading international security scholars and military professionals, it explores the Fourth-Generation Warfare thesis and its implications for security planning in the twenty-first century.

No longer confined to the fringes of armed conflict, guerrilla warfare and terrorism increasingly dominate world-wide military planning. For the first time since the Vietnam War ended, the problems of insurgency have leapt to the top of the international security agenda and virtually all countries are struggling to protect themselves against terrorist threats. Coalition forces in Afghanistan and Iraq are bogged down by an insurgency, and are being forced to rely on old warfare tactics rather than modern technologies to destroy their adversaries. These theorists argue that irregular warfare-insurgencies and terrorism-has evolved over time and become progressively more sophisticated and difficult to defeat as it is not centred on high technology and state of the art weaponry.

Global Insurgency and the Future of Armed Conflict will be of interest to students of international security, strategic studies and terrorism studies.

Advances In The History Of Mathematics Education (1st ed. 2022): Alexander Karp Advances In The History Of Mathematics Education (1st ed. 2022)
Alexander Karp
R4,731 Discovery Miles 47 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is a collection of scholarly studies in the history of mathematics education, very abbreviated versions of which were presented at the ICMI Congress in 2021. The book discusses issues in education in Brazil and Belgium, in Poland and Spain, in Russia and the United States. Probably the main factor that unifies the chapters of the book is their attention to key moments in the formation of the field of mathematics education. Topics discussed in the book include the formation and development of mathematics education for women; the role of the research mathematician in the formation of standards for writing textbooks; the formation of curricula and the most active figures in this formation during the New Math period; the formation of certain distinctive features of curricula in Poland; the formation of the views of David Eugene Smith and the influence of European mathematics education on him; the formation of the American mathematics community; and the creation of such forms of student assessment as entrance exams to higher educational institutions. The book is of interest not only to historians of mathematics education, but also to wide segments of specialists in other areas of mathematics education.

Marcia Karp, Etc, Paul Holmes, Kate Bradshaw Tauvon; Foreword by Zerka Moreno
R2,586 Discovery Miles 25 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This handbook provides a comprehensive introduction to the theory and practice of psychodrama for professional and trainee psychodramatists. Following an introduction to the history and philosophy of psychodrama the theory is then brought to life by detailed first-hand accounts of psychodrama sessions.
The structure of the book innovatively reflects that of the classic psychodrama session - Warm Up, Action, Sharing and the subsequent Processing.
Chapters on psychodrama in action include discussion on the new use of psychodrama in the treatment of depression, and the relationship of the discipline to other group psychotherapies. The contributors vividly illustrate the contribution dramatic improvisation can make to emotional health.

Classic Essays on Jews in Early Modern Europe (Hardcover, New Ed): Francesca Trivellato, Jonathan Karp Classic Essays on Jews in Early Modern Europe (Hardcover, New Ed)
Francesca Trivellato, Jonathan Karp
R4,747 Discovery Miles 47 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Designed for both students and seasoned scholars, this volume provides an innovative guide to the study of the Jewish past from the late Middle Ages to the Enlightenment. It makes available seventeen contributions, published between 1872 and 1974, which are veritable landmarks in the scholarship on Jewish history in early modern Europe but have so far remained little accessible. Many are here translated into English for the first time, while all but one are not currently available in English online. The editors' introduction situates these classic essays in relation to the growing perception that the early modern period in Jewish history possesses its own distinctive features and identity. Accompanied by a rich bibliography, the volume highlights the many changes that the academic study of this vital phase of the Jewish past has undergone during the last hundred and fifty years.
