Introduce students to the fundamentals of linguistic phonetics, designed to help students become proficient in phonetics and phonetic transcription. This clear, systematic, easy-to-understand text provides speech and hearing students with a thorough understanding of phonetics principles through practice. Fundamentals of Phonetics uses in-text exercises and supplemental audio recordings to teach the practical skills necessary to successfully perform phonetic transcription of individuals using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Students learn about the transcription of consonants and vowels, connected speech, and individuals with speech sound disorders. A chapter on speech acoustics introduces spectrograms and the acoustic characteristics of speech sounds. Students also learn how to transcribe individuals who display regional and ethnic dialectal variation of speech, including those who have learned to speak English as a second language. Throughout the text are included chapter objectives, learning exercises, in-class and take-home assignments, online resources, and study questions that will help students learn, process, and practice the material presented in the text. Note: The text does not come with the audio cd. To order the audio CD packaged with the text, use ISBN 0134204816. There are 3 CDs in the package.
This study presents a new approach to the theory of Romanticism. Peer proceeds though key Romantic documents about form and structure, while displacing and condensing modern scholarly assumptions that interrupt modern theoretical protocol. A line of development is suggested, moving from eighteenth-century explorations in Kant, Fielding, and Diderot, through Schlegelian Romantic beginnings, and on through Emily Bronte, Pushkin, and the Romantic Manifesto, culminating in the profound achievement of Manzoni. Summarizing Romantic narrative implications by looking at the modern discipline of Comparative Literature, this book deliberately deforms both our contemporary ideas about Romanticism as well as our non-Romantic way of teaching it.
Substantially revised to reflect the most recent surgical techniques and practices, this reference describes the most effective strategies to prevent, identify, and manage complications in vascular surgery-guiding surgeons through patient selection; instances of entrapment, malpositioning, and rupture; emerging endovascular treatments; and specific device-related complications.
The vexed question of what the Romantics themselves said about Romanticism has been approached in a number of different ways, but their major public declarations have never been gathered together. Indeed, with the exception of a few of these (such as Stendhal's Racine et Shakespeare), this body of evidence has been unavailable to the English-speaking audience. Many of these manifestos are translated here for the first time: the remaining are newly translated for this collection. Taken together, they show Romanticism as a coherent and unified movement appearing in pulses throughout Eastern and Western Europe in the early nineteenth century, with a continual spiritual kinship to Schlegelian origins.
New essays offering fresh glimpses of Romanticism as interdisciplinary and cross-linguistic, illuminating the discursive features and the pan-European nature of the movement. Romanticism bubbled up as lava from such historical eruptions as the Napoleonic Wars. The power of its flow across disciplines and linguistic borders reminds us that the use of the term in a context limited to one linguistic, national, or political tradition, or to one discipline or area of human development, shows an essential ignorance of the ideational configurations elaborated and lived out by the movement. Among its consistent norms are the notion ofreality as a transcendent self-unfolding Geist, everything existing in a dialectical relationship with all else; the position that art reveals mythic understructures of reality; and that all kinds of kinship are more normalthan isolation. This book brings together essays that highlight the inclusivity of Romanticism. A team of eleven scholars offers fresh glimpses of Romanticism as it manifests itself in a number of disciplines, including most prominently literature, but also music, painting, and the sciences. In so doing, the contributors treat Romanticism as interdisciplinary and cross-linguistic, providing data and interpretive viewpoints that illuminate the discursive features and the pan-European nature of the movement. Contrary to popular belief, there has never been any shortage of
Macintosh-related security issues. OS9 had issues that warranted
attention. However, due to both ignorance and a lack of research,
many of these issues never saw the light of day. No solid
techniques were published for executing arbitrary code on OS9, and
there are no notable legacy Macintosh exploits. Due to the combined
lack of obvious vulnerabilities and accompanying exploits,
Macintosh appeared to be a solid platform. Threats to Macintosh's
OS X operating system are increasing in sophistication and number.
Whether it is the exploitation of an increasing number of holes,
use of rootkits for post-compromise concealment or disturbed denial
of service, knowing why the system is vulnerable and understanding
how to defend it is critical to computer security.
In his previous books, most notably "Patterns of war since the 18th century", Larry H. Addington has proven himself a masterful guide to the causes and conduct of war in the western world. In this new book, he turns his narrative skills to a brief history of the war in Vietnam. Not intended as a competitor to the many excellent comprehensive studies of the Vietnam era, this book presents a short, narrative history of the origins, course, and outcome of the America's military involvement in Vietnam. The author begins with a review of the history of Vietnam before the coming of the French, the impact of French imperialism, and the United States's collaboration with Ho Chi Minh during the Second World War. He examines the course of the French Indochina War and the Cold War origins of the early American involvement in Vietnam. He then traces in more detail US policy after the 1954 Geneva Accords, its role in the establishment of a permanent and independent state in South Vietnam and its role in the outbreak of a new war. As his narrative turns to America's deepening involvement in the war, Addington examines the US strategies for waging air and ground war, and the domestic impact of it

This monograph analyzes the events that led to South Carolinas'; uncommon democratic unification following the bitter partisan fighting of the American Revolution. From the study, the author identified common threads in events, or ideals that fostered the birth of a united nation following guerilla warfare within. The focus did not center on a model for construction of a Constitutional Republic, but instead the focus was on gleaning the basis for popular unity following irregular conflict. In today's era of persistent conflict and uncertainty, the measure of victory has shifted from those used in past wars. The capitulation of a massed enemy army is no longer the measure of mission accomplishment. Now, the establishment of popular unity towards a common good is the goal for successful extended peace following conflict. From the unique experience the Americans faced following the American Revolution, this work draws links between how Britain chose to fight the American Revolutionary War, the violent partisan warfighting of the separate American factions, and their resultant motivations in the rebuilding. The study follows a broad range of secondary sources covering the American Revolution for insight into the arrogant nature of the British parliament leading to conflict, the brutal nature of the war, and the commonality of thought and action between the two Colonial factions post conflict. To narrow the scope, attention focuses on the irregular style of fighting in South Carolina and the unification following as a representation of the rationale of the American Colonists. In search of catalysts for post conflict unification, the author studied the background for the foundation of the American colony, Britain's violent theme for the Southern Campaign, specifically the brutality of Colonel Banastre Tarleton, and how this

Essays on key aspects of Romanticism, viewed in a wider European context. Despite a century of sustained critical activity and an interest level in the last ten years never before reached (as reflected in the sheer number of scholarly works produced), the study of Romanticism remains focused for the most part through individual, national, and linguistic views, and is now largely embedded in the complications of contemporary theory as applied through those limiting views. Partly responsible is the fact that Romanticism itself forms a set of rhetorical, cultural, and ideological lenses refracting a multiplicity and even chaos that at times seems to defy comparative analysis. In an attempt to refocus on Romanticism without trying to invent a new synthesis for the movement, the editors have selected thirteen essays from a variety of older and newer scholarly voices that represent a rethinking of key Romantic texts and interrelations through the lens of three fundamental theoretical issues: power, gender, and subjectivity. They call for a newly comparative sense of Romanticism that avoids the kind of critical explication of these issues limited to single national, linguistic, or cultural traditions, or seenthrough too narrowly applied contemporary theoretical `-isms'.
