Handbook of the International Political Economy of Migration (Paperback): Leila Simona Talani, Simon McMahon Handbook of the International Political Economy of Migration (Paperback)
Leila Simona Talani, Simon McMahon
R1,517 Discovery Miles 15 170 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This Handbook discusses theoretical approaches to migration studies in general, as well as confronting various issues in international migration from a distinctive and unique international political economy perspective. With a focus on the relation between globalization and migration, the international political economy (IPE) theories of migration are systematically addressed. Original new contributions from leading migration scholars offer a complete overview of international migration. They examine migration as part of a global political economy whilst addressing the theoretical debates relating to the capacity of the state to control international migration and the so called 'policy gap' or 'gap hypothesis' between migration policies and their outcomes. An examination of the relationship between regional integration and migration, with examples from Europe, North America, the Middle East and North Africa, as well as South-East Asia - is also included. Aimed at political scientists and political economists with an interest in globalization and EU policymaking this collection will be accessible to students, academic and policymakers alike. Contributors: R.G. Anghel, A. Balch, M. Fauser, C. Finotelli, A. Geddes, W.J. Haller, F. Jurje, O. Korneev, S. Lavenex, A.I. Leon, S. McMahon, E. Nadalutti, H. Overbeek, F. Pasetti, H. Pellerin, M. The Political Economy of Global Responses to COVID-19 (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023): Alan W. Cafruny, Leila Simona Talani The Political Economy of Global Responses to COVID-19 (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023)
Alan W. Cafruny, Leila Simona Talani
R3,480 Discovery Miles 34 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book seeks to identify the reasons why some countries were more efficient and effective than others in responding to the COVID 19 pandemic, and why the global community failed to coalesce. What are the political determinants of the different state responses to the pandemic? Why was scientific advice rejected or ignored in many countries? What has been the role, respectively, of neoliberalism, populism, and authoritarianism in the making of Covid-19 policy? What role have each of these factors played in the uneven and clearly inadequate global response to the pandemic? In an effort to understand why some states failed to handle the pandemic properly, some of the literature suggests that populism is at the root of the current failure of international co-operation. The global financial crisis of 2008-10 triggered significant cooperation within the G-20, led by the combined efforts of the United States and China. These forms of cooperation have clearly disappeared in the context of the pandemic, not only with respect to economic policy but also in public health and management. The authors of this volume link the different state responses to the pandemic-- from its inception to the start of the vaccination campaign, and to the political regimes prevailing in each. In particular, the present volume focuses on a distinction between the responses of neo-liberal regimes, populist regimes and authoritarian ones.

Leila Simona Talani
R3,381 Discovery Miles 33 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book proposes an alternative political economy framework in which to analyse the question of the credibility of international economic agreements, in general, and monetary arrangements in particular. The focus is on European monetary arrangements, from the establishment of the European Monetary System to the crisis of the Euro-zone. The analysis is predicated around the political economy of Italy's access and permanence in the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). The author argues that the case of Italy, which made a concerted effort to join the EMU in the first wave, is particularly striking. Support for the single currency was widespread when it was introduced, yet something went wrong. Nowadays, its participation to the European monetary integration process cannot be easily taken for granted, especially after the vicissitudes of the Euro-zone crisis.

The International Political Economy of Migration in the Globalization Era (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Leila Simona Talani The International Political Economy of Migration in the Globalization Era (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Leila Simona Talani
R3,310 Discovery Miles 33 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book concerns with the analysis of the impact of globalization on international migration from a distinct international political economy perspective. It confronts theoretical debates from the different international political economy (IPE) approaches and elaborates on the implications of different theories in policymaking and political realms. Here, migration is examined as an integral part of the global political economy that is structurally connected to the process of globalization, although the definition of globalization itself is a subject of enquiry.

Women in the Mediterranean (Paperback): Leila Simona Talani, Serena Giusti Women in the Mediterranean (Paperback)
Leila Simona Talani, Serena Giusti
R1,230 Discovery Miles 12 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The book addresses the challenges faced by women on the two shores of the Mediterranean from a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary perspective. While in the European Union's (EU) Mediterranean countries inequality is mostly linked to the social sphere and, in particular refers to labour market dynamics, in the Middle East and Northern Africa (MENA) area, the situation is more complicated as the social and private spheres are blended and cultural and religious factors have a great impact on women autonomy and opportunities beyond the family perimeter. The different challenges women are facing on the two sides of the Mediterranean have sometimes originated incomprehension and misperceptions. Western-supported policies devoted to fill the gap between men and women in the MENA area have overlooked countries' peculiarities simply exporting models tailored for EU's member states. The EU's attempts to strengthen relations with the Mediterranean countries on a multilevel basis have not rescued women from marginalisation. Nevertheless, during the 2011 awakening, women played an important role in activating civil society. They are still considered as a key part of the fight against terrorism and radicalisation, although in some countries their condition has worsened after secular regimes have been downturned. The number of migrant women has increased and, not differently from men, they are looking for opportunities and better conditions of life while Western media tend to present them in a stereotyped way either as traumatized victim and/or as caring mother. There are other misleading common places, which need to be better conceptualised and understood, such as the alleged incompatibility between Islam and women rights. Unfortunately, women's rights are still under attack even in European countries where they are considered consolidated. The chapters in this book were originally published in a special issue of the Journal of the Balkans and Near Eastern Studies.

Globalisation, Migration, and the Future of Europe - Insiders and Outsiders (Paperback): Leila Simona Talani Globalisation, Migration, and the Future of Europe - Insiders and Outsiders (Paperback)
Leila Simona Talani
R1,474 Discovery Miles 14 740 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Showcasing an original, interdisciplinary approach, this text examines the effect of migration on the domestic politics of individual states and how they are eroding the distinctions between the domestic and foreign policy, the 'inside' and 'outside' components of politics and law. During the twentieth century the context in which migrants negotiate their integration within legal, social, cultural, economic and political spaces changed significantly. Drawing upon varied perspectives from the US, UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Russia and Italy among others, this work develops a comprehensive understanding of the impact migratory networks are having on European societies. It investigates the strategies of integration or discrimination which are developed in Europe by state institutions, legal codes, political movements and even immigrant communities themselves, when confronted with the growing influence of migratory networks. The result is a highly topical exploration of the political and legal dimensions of migration in the EU, that develops new approaches to the issue of social integration and the exclusion of migrants and migrant communities. Globalization, Migration, and the Future of Europe will be of interest to students and scholars of migration, European studies, globalization and International Law.

The Dark Side of Globalisation (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Leila Simona Talani, Roberto Roccu The Dark Side of Globalisation (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Leila Simona Talani, Roberto Roccu
R3,527 Discovery Miles 35 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Firmly rooted in the International Political Economy (IPE) tradition, this book addresses the negative consequences of globalisation, what is termed here the 'dark side of globalisation'. It explores different definitions of globalisation, whether the globalisation we have seen since the 1970s is substantially new, and to what extent it can be governed. Building on these foundations, the work assesses the prospects for de-globalisation. By focusing on this dark side of globalistion, the authors show how the global economic crisis, and its various local and sectorial manifestations, intensified - rather than generated - existing trends. This scholarship provides an account of the current predicament that is both more complex and more persuasive than the opposition between globalisation and de-globalisation.

European Political Economy - Issues and Theories (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Leila Simona Talani European Political Economy - Issues and Theories (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Leila Simona Talani
R3,991 Discovery Miles 39 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As with the previous version (Ashgate 2004), this second edition is divided, for didactic purposes, into two parts. The first part provides an overview of political science approaches to European political economy, both mainstream and critical ones. As such, it contributes directly to the current debate among scholars of political science and international political economy concerning the nature of the process of European integration. The second part provides alternative explanations of some European economic policy events - the ECB, banking regulation, fiscal co-ordination, the crisis of the euro-zone, social policy and unemployment - allowing the reader to assess the explanatory value of competing approaches.

The Palgrave Handbook of Critical International Political Economy (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Alan Cafruny, Leila Simona Talani,... The Palgrave Handbook of Critical International Political Economy (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Alan Cafruny, Leila Simona Talani, Gonzalo Pozo Martin
R6,619 Discovery Miles 66 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Challenging the assumptions of 'mainstream' International Political Economy (IPE), this Handbook demonstrates the considerable value of critical theory to the discipline through a series of cutting-edge studies. The field of IPE has always had an inbuilt vocation within Historical Materialism, with an explicit ambition to make sense, from a critical standpoint, of the capitalist mode of production as a world system of sometimes paradoxically and sometimes smoothly overlapping states and markets. Having spearheaded the growth of a vigorous critical scholarship in the 1960s and 1970s, however, Marxism and neo-Gramscian approaches became increasingly marginalized over the course of the 1980s. The authors respond to the exposure of limits to mainstream contemporary scholarship in the wake of the onset of the Global Financial Crisis, and provide a comprehensive overview of the field of Critical International Political Economy. Problematizing socioeconomic and political structures, and considering these as potentially transitory and subject to change, the contributors aim not simply to understand a world of conflict, but furthermore to uncover the ways in which purportedly objective analyses reflect the interests of those in positions of privilege and power.

Europe in Crisis - A Structural Analysis (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Leila Simona Talani Europe in Crisis - A Structural Analysis (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Leila Simona Talani
R3,988 Discovery Miles 39 880 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

With contributions from a range of expert scholars in European economics, politics and social policy, this edited collection analyses the crisis in Europe by exploring the structural asymmetries of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) and European monetary integration. Structured in two parts, the chapters in this book discuss the impact of the global financial crisis on the Euro area; the failed implementation of the Lisbon Strategy; wage imbalances in the European labour market; the development of EU financial regulation; the Greek debt crisis; and the relationship between Italy and the EMU. The conclusion to the book puts forward a potential way out of the European crisis and argues that the correct measures, thus far, have not been taken to bolster financial stability. In Europe in Crisis, Talani and her contributors aim to identify the impact of the crisis on the future of the EMU and the EU project as a whole.

Leila Simona Talani, Matilde Rosina
R1,236 Discovery Miles 12 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In recent elections across the European Union, parties adopting an anti-immigration stance and making use of populist rhetoric have been gaining electoral breakthrough. Against this backdrop, and in order to contribute to a deeper understanding of the connections binding migration and populism dynamics in Europe, this volume aims to trigger a discussion on the causes and consequences of the rise of populism in Europe, and deconstruct the rhetorical frames it uses to depict migratory flows as an exceptional phenomenon.

R2,029 Discovery Miles 20 290 Out of stock

European integration has long defied previous notions of state sovereignty and has since the days of the Coal and Steel Community been conferred with original supranational instruments. Yet the Treaty of Rome did not raise the same popular reactions as the Maastricht Treaty about the infringement of national sovereignty. This book suggests that the end of the Cold War has modified the functions of European integration so that the original ideals of integration have lost part of their appeal; hence the birth of the European Union can be regarded as an attempt to seek a new legitimacy. How far did the EU Treaty meet this unprecedented challenge? This book argues that the Maastricht Treaty established a constitutional framework for a new kind of polity without resolving the issue of its purpose and scope. The volume seeks thus to explain some of the reasons for the defeat of the Constitutional Treaty in 2005 dating them back to the Maastricht Treaty. In so doing, the book links the actual state of European integration with the decisions taken at Maastricht in five different realms of supranational policy-making. The first is the constitutional setting of the EU Treaty and its effect on national constitutional law; the second is the concept of governance and the changes introduced by the Economic and Monetary Union; the third is the historical background of the Maastricht agreement; the fourth the political economy of the Economic and Monetary Union; the fifth is the impact of European citizenship in the recent case-law of the European Court of Justice and the prospects of a EU politicisation. The book puts in perspective the solutions to the recent stalemate of the European integration process offered by the Lisbon Treaty.
