Han-Fu Chen, Lei Guo
R3,049 Discovery Miles 30 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Identifying the input-output relationship of a system or discovering the evolutionary law of a signal on the basis of observation data, and applying the constructed mathematical model to predicting, controlling or extracting other useful information constitute a problem that has been drawing a lot of attention from engineering and gaining more and more importance in econo metrics, biology, environmental science and other related areas. Over the last 30-odd years, research on this problem has rapidly developed in various areas under different terms, such as time series analysis, signal processing and system identification. Since the randomness almost always exists in real systems and in observation data, and since the random process is sometimes used to model the uncertainty in systems, it is reasonable to consider the object as a stochastic system. In some applications identification can be carried out off line, but in other cases this is impossible, for example, when the structure or the parameter of the system depends on the sample, or when the system is time-varying. In these cases we have to identify the system on line and to adjust the control in accordance with the model which is supposed to be approaching the true system during the process of identification. This is why there has been an increasing interest in identification and adaptive control for stochastic systems from both theorists and practitioners."

Lei Guo, Hong Wang
R2,908 Discovery Miles 29 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A recent development in SDC-related problems is the establishment of intelligent SDC models and the intensive use of LMI-based convex optimization methods. Within this theoretical framework, control parameter determination can be designed and stability and robustness of closed-loop systems can be analyzed. This book describes the new framework of SDC system design and provides a comprehensive description of the modelling of controller design tools and their real-time implementation. It starts with a review of current research on SDC and moves on to some basic techniques for modelling and controller design of SDC systems. This is followed by a description of controller design for fixed-control-structure SDC systems, PDF control for general input- and output-represented systems, filtering designs, and fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) for SDC systems. Many new LMI techniques being developed for SDC systems are shown to have independent theoretical significance for robust control and FDD problems.

The Power of Information Networks - New Directions for Agenda Setting (Hardcover): Lei Guo, Maxwell McCombs The Power of Information Networks - New Directions for Agenda Setting (Hardcover)
Lei Guo, Maxwell McCombs
R4,266 Discovery Miles 42 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The news media have significant influence on the formation of public opinion. Called the agenda-setting role of the media, this influence occurs at three levels. Focusing public attention on a select few issues or other topics at any moment is level one. Emphasizing specific attributes of those issues or topics is level two. The Power of Information Networks: The Third Level of Agenda Setting introduces the newest perspective on this influence. While levels one and two are concerned with the salience of discrete individual elements, the third level offers a more comprehensive and nuanced perspective to explain media effects in this evolving media landscape: the ability of the news media to determine how the public associates the various elements in these media messages to create an integrated picture of public affairs. This is the first book to detail the theoretical foundations, methodological approaches, and international empirical evidence for this new perspective. Cutting-edge communication analytics such as network analysis, Big Data and data visualization techniques are used to examine these third-level effects. Diverse applications of the theory are documented in political communication, public relations, health communication, and social media research. The Power of Information Networks will interest scholars, students and practitioners concerned with the media and their social and cultural effects.

Ecologies of Translation in East and South East Asia, 1600-1900 (Hardcover): Li Guo, Patricia Sieber, Peter Kornicki Ecologies of Translation in East and South East Asia, 1600-1900 (Hardcover)
Li Guo, Patricia Sieber, Peter Kornicki
R3,578 Discovery Miles 35 780 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This ground-breaking volume on early modern inter-Asian translation examines how translation from plain Chinese was situated at the nexus between, on the one hand, the traditional standard of biliteracy characteristic of literary practices in the Sinographic sphere, and on the other, practices of translational multilingualism (competence in multiple spoken languages to produce a fully localized target text). Translations from plain Chinese are shown to carve out new ecologies of translations that not only enrich our understanding of early modern translation practices across the Sinographic sphere, but also demonstrate that the transregional uses of a non-alphabetic graphic technology call for different models of translation theory.

Writing Gender in Early Modern Chinese Women's Tanci Fiction (Hardcover): Li Guo Writing Gender in Early Modern Chinese Women's Tanci Fiction (Hardcover)
Li Guo
R2,836 Discovery Miles 28 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Women's tanci, or ""plucking rhymes,"" are chantefable narratives written by upper-class educated women from seventeenth-century to early twentieth-century China. Writing Gender in Early Modern Chinese Women's Tanci Fiction offers a timely study on early modern Chinese women's representations of gender, nation, and political activism in their tanci works before and after the Taiping Rebellion (1850 to 1864), as well as their depictions of warfare and social unrest. Women tanci authors' redefinition of female exemplarity within the Confucian orthodox discourses of virtue, talent, chastity, and political integrity could be bourgeoning expressions of female exceptionalism and could have foreshadowed protofeminist ideals of heroism. They establish a realistic tenor in affirming feminine domestic authority, and open up spaces for discussions of ""womanly becoming,"" female exceptionalism, and shifting family power structures. The vernacular mode underlying these texts yields productive possibilities of gendered self-representations, bodily valences, and dynamic performances of sexual roles. The result is a vernacular discursive frame that enables women's appropriation and refashioning of orthodox moral values as means of self-affirmation and self-realization. Validations of women's political activism and loyalism to the nation attest to tanci as a premium vehicle for disseminating progressive social incentives to popular audiences. Women's tanci marks early modern writers' endeavors to carve out a space of feminine becoming, a discursive arena of feminine appropriation, reinvention, and boundary-crossings. In this light, women's tanci portrays gendered mobility through depictions of a heroine's voyages or social ascent, and entails a forward-moving historical progression toward a more autonomous and vested model of feminine subjectivity.

Gadolinium Zirconate as a New Material for Thermal Barrier Coatings (Paperback): Wang Li, Guo Shengmin Gadolinium Zirconate as a New Material for Thermal Barrier Coatings (Paperback)
Wang Li, Guo Shengmin
R1,531 Discovery Miles 15 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) have been widely used to protect the superalloy components from the hot gas stream in gas turbine engines. Driven by the higher inlet temperature of modern gas turbine engines for higher efficiency and less harmful gas emission, exploration of TBC new materials and thermal radiation effects of TBCs have recently attracted more attentions. This research explored the potential application of gadolinium zirconate as a promising new TBC material due to its lower thermal conductivity, higher phase stability, and higher CMAS-resistance than conventional YSZ material. The thermal cycling tests were performed using a novel test rig which was designed to mimic the complex working condition of TBCs, and the thermal radiation properties were characterized in the wavelength range where turbine engine thermal radiation is most concentrated. This book is suitable for both beginners and professions in the field of TBCs, as it covers both the brief introduction of TBC system, deposition methods, recent development and the in-depth analysis of failure mechanisms and different models to determine the coating absorption and scattering coefficients.
