Mothering without a Home - Attachment Representations and Behaviors of Homeless Mothers and Children (Paperback): Ann G. Smolen Mothering without a Home - Attachment Representations and Behaviors of Homeless Mothers and Children (Paperback)
Ann G. Smolen; As told to Alexandra M. Harrison
R1,269 Discovery Miles 12 690 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Homeless women and their children who reside in a transitional housing facility or shelter have experienced multiple traumas and disruptions in their earliest attachments. These multiple, chronic traumas often result in disorganized attachment disorders, which, in turn, affect all future development. Although there are a dearth of programs and interventions that work with disorganized attachment disorder within the homeless population, there are few studies that explore the difficulties that homeless mothers experience in forming positive attachments with their children. Mothering without a Home: Attachment Representations and Behaviors of Homeless Mothers and Children explores the attachment style of homeless mothers and its effect on the resulting attachment style of their children. Ann Smolen utilizes psychoanalytically informed interventions with the goal of aiding these women in developing a deeper capacity to understand and be attuned to their children's emotional needs.

The Penance Walk (Hardcover): John M Harrison The Penance Walk (Hardcover)
John M Harrison
R876 Discovery Miles 8 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A true story From a stern Irish and English upbringing, nine year old John was placed in a Roman Catholic Boarding School in England in the early years of the Second World War. The heavy discipline meted out by the Catholic Teaching Order of Priests, who ran St Michael's College and the viciousness practiced by the older boys was almost unbearable. He was soon befriended by one of the priests, his Form's English Master. He did not realize that the attention he was receiving, was due to the priest's physical attraction towards him, but was pleased to have the attention of a sensitive father figure, as his own father had died before the war. When invited to stay during a summer school holiday at the Order's Novitiate College housed in a rambling Elizabethan country mansion, the relationship came to a climax when the sexual advances by the priest increased and became intolerable. The boy's mindset now believed that he was committing a series of mortal sins and was scared that he'd be damned to Hell for eternity. He felt a strong urge to go to Confession, but whom could he trust? With a stoicism developed during those early days at St Michael's, he was determined to stop the sexual part of their relationship and eventually taught the priest a lesson he would never forget. Concerning the title The Penance Walk was an exposed paved rose garden in front of the school, where boys were sent in all weathers to memorize a lesson they had failed to do correctly, until it was recited word perfect.

Paths of Innovation in Warfare - From the Twelfth Century to the Present (Hardcover): Nicholas Michael Sambaluk Paths of Innovation in Warfare - From the Twelfth Century to the Present (Hardcover)
Nicholas Michael Sambaluk; Contributions by Richard H. Anderson, Charles Costanzo, Brian Drohan, Mark Ehlers, …
R2,871 Discovery Miles 28 710 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Innovation shapes wars, and twelve studies by former faculty members of West Point's United States Military Academy examine specific cases of past and present military innovation. The complex, competitive, and dynamic environment that defines war drives combatants to seek solutions to potentially lethal problems. As some solutions prove effective, gain traction, and win emulation, they follow a path of innovation. The chapters address a broad array of innovations, including in weapon technology, strategy, research and development philosophy, organization of the military instrument, and leveraging maps for strategic goals. Geographically, the examples in this volume span four continents and the Mediterranean Sea, and chronologically they proceed from the twelfth century to the twenty first. Collectively, the studies point to the interconnected value of pursuing constructive solutions to challenges, networking interdisciplinary forms of knowledge, appropriately balancing expectations and capabilities, and understanding an innovation as a journey rather than as an episodic event.

Autism Spectrum Disorder - Perspectives from Psychoanalysis and Neuroscience (Hardcover): Susan P. Sherkow Autism Spectrum Disorder - Perspectives from Psychoanalysis and Neuroscience (Hardcover)
Susan P. Sherkow; Contributions by William M. Singletary; Alexandra M. Harrison
R2,409 Discovery Miles 24 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Autism Spectrum Disorder: Perspectives from Psychoanalysis is written by practicing child psychoanalysts with extensive experience treating children with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) and uneven development. The authors bridge the gap between a psychodynamic approach to ASD and burgeoning data from the fields of neurobiology and neurofunction. Based on current research showing neuroplasticity of the brain, the authors posit that treating ASD through intensive engagement of caregiver and child makes possible the successful psychoanalytic treatment of a neurobiological disorder. To this end, the authors examine both the clinical dynamics of their treatments and the possible impact of the treatment on neurobiological processes. Detailed case studies of children treated by the authors comprise the heart of the book. The cases emphasize the importance of engaging these young children intensively with the social world, first of their caregivers and then their peers, while also helping child and caregiver make sense of the child's "nonsense" behavior through insight into their inner worlds. The authors explain how and why such treatment works through examining the processes by which infant and caregiver learn to know each other and how a baby comes to know the world. This approach emphasizes the intimate connection between infant and caregiver in forming the emotional, cognitive, attentional, and interpersonal experiences that give a child the ability to make meaning and grow. In addition, this volume presents a selective summary of the neurobiological research in the area of ASD to provide the reader with the related neurobiological and psychological factors. This underscores the thesis that ASD is a potentially reversible neurodevelopmental disorder with experiential and psychological consequences, and lays groundwork for an integrated treatment approach with psychoanalysis at its core.

Setting Out on the Great Way - Essays on Early Mahayana Buddhism (Hardcover): Paul M Harrison Setting Out on the Great Way - Essays on Early Mahayana Buddhism (Hardcover)
Paul M Harrison
R2,657 Discovery Miles 26 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Setting Out on the Great Way brings together different perspectives on the origins and early history of Mahayana Buddhism and delves into selected aspects of its formative period. As the variety of the religion which conquered East Asia and also provided the matrix for the later development of Buddhist Tantra or Vajrayana, Mahayana is regarded as one of the most significant forms of Buddhism, and its beginnings have long been the focus of intense scholarly attention and debate. The essays in this volume address the latest findings in the field, including contributions by younger researchers vigorously critiquing the reappraisal of the Mahayana carried out by scholars in the last decades of the 20th century and the different understanding of the movement which they produced. As the study of Buddhism as a whole reorients itself to embrace new methods and paradigms, while at the same time coming to terms with exciting new manuscript discoveries, our picture of the Mahayana continues to change. This volume presents the latest developments in this ongoing re-evaluation of one of Buddhism's most important historical expressions.

Teaching Struggling Students - Lessons Learned from Both Sides of the Classroom (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Laura M. Harrison Teaching Struggling Students - Lessons Learned from Both Sides of the Classroom (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Laura M. Harrison
R1,539 Discovery Miles 15 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book tackles the phenomenon of limited learning on campuses by approaching it from the point of view of the author, an educator who writes about the experience of being, simultaneously, a college student and a college professor. The author lays out her experience as a student struggling in an introductory linguistics class, framing her struggles as sites ripe for autoethnographic interrogation. Throughout the book, the author melds her personal narratives with the extant research on college student learning, college readiness, and the interconnectedness of affect, intellect, and socio-cultural contexts. This book poses a challenge to the current binary metanarrative that circles the college student learning conundrum, which highlights either the faculty or student perspective, and unfolds this unnecessary binary into a rich, nuanced, and polyvocal set of perspectives.

Imaging Sunlight Using a Digital Spectroheliograph (Paperback, 1st ed. 2016): Ken M. Harrison Imaging Sunlight Using a Digital Spectroheliograph (Paperback, 1st ed. 2016)
Ken M. Harrison
R2,106 Discovery Miles 21 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Ken M. Harrison's latest book is a complete guide for amateur astronomers who want to obtain detailed narrowband images of the Sun using a digital spectroheliograph (SHG). The SHG allows the safe imaging of the Sun without the expense of commercial 'etalon' solar filters. As the supporting software continues to be refined, the use of the digital spectroheliograph will become more and more mainstream and has the potential to replace the expensive solar filters currently in use. The early chapters briefly explain the concept of the SHG and how it can produce an image from the solar spectrum. A comparison of the currently available narrow band solar filters is followed by a detailed analysis of the critical design, construction and assembly features of the SHG. The design and optimum layout of the instrument is discussed to allow evaluation of performance. This information explains how to assemble a fully functional SHG using readily available components. The software required to process the images is explained and step by step examples provided, with various digital instruments around the world highlighted based on input from many experienced amateurs who have shared their experience in building and using their spectroheliographs. The final chapters provide a historical overview of the traditional spectroheliograph and the later spectrohelioscope, from the initial G.E.Hale and Deslandres concepts of the 1890's through to the later work by Veio and others. The construction and performance of various instruments is covered in detail, and provides a unique opportunity to record and appreciate the groundbreaking researches carried out by amateurs in the 20th century. This is an absolutely up to date book which fully addresses the watershed, game changing influence of the digital imaging revolution on the traditional spectroheliograph.

Astronomical Spectroscopy for Amateurs (Paperback, 2011): Ken M. Harrison Astronomical Spectroscopy for Amateurs (Paperback, 2011)
Ken M. Harrison
R933 R779 Discovery Miles 7 790 Save R154 (17%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Astronomical Spectroscopy for Amateurs is a complete guide for amateur astronomers, both novice and experienced, who want to do something more than "run of the mill" astrophotography and are looking for a new challenge. The book is broadly divided into three parts.

First, there is a brief overview of the history and development of the spectroscope. This is followed by a short introduction to the theory of stellar spectra. The final parts of this section provide details of the necessary reference spectra required for instrument testing and spectral comparison. It concludes with a chapter covering the various types of spectroscopes available to the amateur.

Next, there is a series of "How to " sections. These cover all aspects of setting up and using various types of commercially available and home-built spectroscopes. Transmission gratings are covered first, and then more complex models, all the way to the sophisticated Littrow design.

The final part of Astronomical Spectroscopy for Amateurs is about practical spectroscope design and construction. It contains a collection of detailed instructions covering the design and building of three different types of spectroscope, along with the necessary design theory (with minimal math). Developing an instrument in simple steps from the basic grating spectroscope, using standard "off the shelf" adaptors, the author describes how to build spectroscopes equal in performance to the better commercial units, constructed using basic hand tools for a fraction of the cost

This is the only up-to-date practical spectroscopy book available to amateurs. For the first time, it also brings together an invaluable user knowledge base a collection of observing, analyzing, and processing hints and tips that will allow the amateur to build up and develop important skills in preparing scientifically acceptable spectral data, which can make a valuable contribution to ProAm (professional/amateur) projects. It covers in detail all aspects of the design, construction techniques, testing, calibrating, and using a spectroscope enough detail to enable the average amateur astronomer to successfully build and use his own spectroscope for a fraction of the current commercial cost.

This book is an ideal complement to Robinson s Spectroscopy: the Key to the Stars (Springer 2007) and Martin s Spectroscopic Atlas of Bright Stars (Springer, due 2009). Together, the three books form a complete package for all amateur astronomers who are interested in practical spectroscopy.

As Professor Chris Kitchin said, "If optical spectroscopy had not been invented then fully 75 percent of all astronomical knowledge would be unknown today, and yet the subject itself receives scant attention in astronomical texts." Olivier Thizy (of Shelyak Instruments, the builder of the LiHiResIII commercial spectroscope) writes on an Internet forum; "What is missing is tutorial books and "how to" books with amateur equipment? I believe spectroscopy is in general moving from builders to users (as CCD cameras did in the 1990's) literature is following but slowly."

This is the practical spectroscopy book that amateur astronomers have been waiting for

After the Berlin Wall - Memory and the Making of the New Germany, 1989 to the Present (Paperback): Hope M. Harrison After the Berlin Wall - Memory and the Making of the New Germany, 1989 to the Present (Paperback)
Hope M. Harrison
R770 Discovery Miles 7 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The history and meaning of the Berlin Wall remain controversial, even three decades after its fall. Drawing on an extensive range of archival sources and interviews, this book profiles key memory activists who have fought to commemorate the history of the Berlin Wall and examines their role in the creation of a new German national narrative. With victims, perpetrators and heroes, the Berlin Wall has joined the Holocaust as an essential part of German collective memory. Key Wall anniversaries have become signposts marking German views of the past, its relevance to the present, and the complicated project of defining German national identity. Considering multiple German approaches to remembering the Wall via memorials, trials, public ceremonies, films, and music, this revelatory work also traces how global memory of the Wall has impacted German memory policy. It depicts the power and fragility of state-backed memory projects, and the potential of such projects to reconcile or divide.

An Integrative Approach to Leader Development - Connecting Adult Development, Identity, and Expertise (Paperback): David V.... An Integrative Approach to Leader Development - Connecting Adult Development, Identity, and Expertise (Paperback)
David V. Day, Michelle M Harrison, Stanley M. Halpin
R1,572 Discovery Miles 15 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is a beginning, a first step, in taking leader development in organizations beyond conventional wisdom toward a scientifically sound research-based set of principles and practices. The authors looked beyond their own academic disciplines to bring to bear accumulated wisdom from researchers who have developed well-established and accepted theoretical perspectives on adult development processes in general, then wove in the ideas that have emerged in more targeted research on adult education, development of cognitive skills, identity development, self-regulation, moral and ethical development, and related topics. The authors present an integrative theory that provides a coherent framework for describing an understanding how leader development takes place.
