Claudia Finkbeiner, Althier M. Lazar
R2,693 Discovery Miles 26 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is a valuable resource for teachers and other professionals who are looking for a proven way to increase cultural appreciation and awareness. New applications of the ABCs model of Cultural Understanding and Communication are presented and discussed in this new volume, based on studies done in the United States, and Canada and Europe. In this ground-breaking project, the authors describe how the ABCs model complicated and challenged and changed the cultural perceptions of those who participated in it, even those who were initially highly resistant to such possibilities. At the heart of the project is the exchange of narratives - life stories that give insight into the cultural worlds of selves and others. In addition to the narratives, other instruments including the Transcultural Competence Scale (TCC), provide further evidence of the positive impact of the ABCs on participants' receptivity toward cultural differences. In the TRANSABCs project, researchers from both sides of the Atlantic invited teacher candidates, students who will become workplace and other professionals to write an autobiography (A) of themselves from various cultural perspectives, a biography (B) of an individual who is culturally different from themselves along particular dimensions, and to use these documents to conduct cross-cultural comparisons (C) between themselves and the person they interviewed. Furthermore, candidates developed culturally responsive ideas for the school or the workplace (C). These exchanges and analyses produced epiphanies and insights that translated into specific actions to improve cultural understanding and communication in classrooms and workplaces. Educators and professionals can take from these examples to inspire their own personal journey toward greater cultural understanding and sensitivity.

Beyond the Knife - Alternatives to Surgery (Hardcover): Alan M Lazar Facs Beyond the Knife - Alternatives to Surgery (Hardcover)
Alan M Lazar Facs; As told to Maury M Breecher Mph
R431 Discovery Miles 4 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Surgery is no longer necessary for many injuries, ailments, and conditions for which it used to be the only option. It is invasive and unpredictable, and recuperation is often slow and painful. Surgery does not guarantee healing and can leave patients vulnerable to serious infections. The bottom line is that the natural healing mechanisms of the body are responsible for repairing and mending any injury or condition.

From shoulders to ankles, Dr. Lazar's patients have experienced firsthand the incredible healing power of the combination of modern medicine and the body's natural healing processes. More than one thousand of his patients have benefited from platelet-rich plasma therapy, where a patient's platelets are extracted from their blood and when necessary combined with stem cells from their abdominal fat or bone marrow, and re-injected into the injured site.

The results of the platelet-rich plasma treatments speak for themselves: baseball pitchers are back on the mound a few weeks after being benched with shoulder injuries. Tennis players sidelined with tennis elbow are able to again hit shots without pain. Everyday people suffering from debilitating knee pain are now walking with ease.

People everywhere, in all walks of life, are gaining full mobility and improved quality of life faster-without surgery.

Reconceptualizing Literacy in the New Age of Multiculturalism and Pluralism (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition): Patricia Ruggiano... Reconceptualizing Literacy in the New Age of Multiculturalism and Pluralism (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition)
Patricia Ruggiano Schmidt, Althier M. Lazar
R3,021 Discovery Miles 30 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The 2nd Edition of Reconceptualizing Literacy in the New Age of Multiculturalism and Pluralism honors the genius of Dr. Peter Mosenthal. His contributions to the field of literacy were unprecedented. Many described him as a superb researcher who never lost sight of the purpose of education. He made us laugh as he led us in a nurseryrhyme song during his National Reading Conference (LRA) Presidential Address and made us think as he explained the significance of educational implications in all research articles. He also mentored and taught graduate students in gentle and carefully attentive ways, showing his respect and appreciation for the work of each individual in the field. He was a remarkable person. The second edition of this book includes many experienced and new scholars from around the world. Qualitative and quantitative research methodologies are scattered throughout and the practical and theoretical are well represented. New Literacies and Global Perspectives are added sections in this volume. In this era of the "Common Core", Reconceptualizing Literacy in the New Age of Multiculturalism and Pluralism, presents a rational educational balance for literacy development across the curriculum.

New Teachers in Urban Schools: Journeys Toward Social Equity Teaching (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Althier M. Lazar, Leslie M.... New Teachers in Urban Schools: Journeys Toward Social Equity Teaching (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Althier M. Lazar, Leslie M. Reich
R3,257 Discovery Miles 32 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume informs the reader about new teachers in urban underserved schools and their development as teachers for social equity. The accounts of five novice teachers who grew up outside the communities in which they teach lead to chapters that contain advice for teacher educators, future and current teachers, and school leaders. These early career teachers learned much about bridging the cultural divide between themselves and their students, confronted and resolved big challenges that may immobilize some who set out to teach in these communities. They brought to their classrooms strong social justice orientations, including a moral imperative to make a difference in the world, an awareness of social and educational inequalities, and a strong sense of responsibility to positively influence the life trajectories of students in their charge. Their narratives offer insights on the dispositions and contexts that will help early career teachers survive and thrive and make a difference in their students' lives.

Miniaturization and Mass Spectrometry (Hardcover): Daniel Figeys, Gary A. Schultz, Daniel Knapp, Steve Arscott, Christian... Miniaturization and Mass Spectrometry (Hardcover)
Daniel Figeys, Gary A. Schultz, Daniel Knapp, Steve Arscott, Christian Rolando, …
R4,367 Discovery Miles 43 670 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The recent explosion in the use of analytical chemistry, particularly in the biological sciences, has led to a need for fast, reliable and highly sensitive tools able to handle small sample sizes. This book illustrates how microfluidics and lab-on-a-chip devices can satisfy the growing need for miniaturized and enhanced analysis. They lend themselves well to mass spectrometric detection as they use samples in the low microlitre range and are handled on a chip. Miniaturization and Mass Spectrometry focuses on one particular technique, mass spectrometry, whose popularity has increased dramatically in the last two decades with the increase in use of biological analysis and the development of two "soft" ionization techniques, ESI and MALDI. These enable the analysis of large but fragile biological molecules such as DNA, proteins and oligosaccharides. The book starts with an introduction to the coupling of microfluidics to mass spectrometry techniques. It then goes on demonstrate the advantages of such a coupling: the MS analysis benefits from improved sample preparation when performed on a chip while MS yields more information on the sample handled on the chip compared to conventional optical detection. A history on the developments in this field, starting from the off-chip coupling to the on-chip ionization, is also provided. Daniel Figeys, a pioneer in the development of microfluidic systems for MS analysis, describes the early beginnings of this hyphenated analysis technique. Solutions to couple microfluidic systems to the two most popular ionization methods, ESI and MALDI, are presented throughout the chapters. Various examples are given of the application of this microfluidics-MS hyphenated analysis technique to proteomics, metabolomics, organic chemistry and forensics. Coverage is not limited to academic research. The development of commercialized systems and their current use for routine biological analysis are also presented. Lastly, a future vision of the integration of the mass spectrometer on the chip is raised, as a last step to yield fully portable systems for on-site analysis.
