Food Fraud (Paperback): John M. Ryan Food Fraud (Paperback)
John M. Ryan
R685 Discovery Miles 6 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Food Fraud provides an overview of the current state on the topic to help readers understand which products are being impacted, how pervasive food fraud is, and what laws are in effect across the developed world. As international food trade increases, food processors, distributors, and consumers are purchasing more and more food from foreign countries that, in many cases, have inadequate oversight or control over what is coming into our supermarkets, restaurants, and refrigerators. This book is an essential quick reference that will familiarize readers with the latest issues surrounding the food industry.

Consilio Et Animis - Tracing a Path to Social Justice through the Classics (Hardcover, New): Antoinette M. Ryan Consilio Et Animis - Tracing a Path to Social Justice through the Classics (Hardcover, New)
Antoinette M. Ryan
R2,466 Discovery Miles 24 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Once the province and tool of elite learning in American society, and the core of the Humanities, the study of the Classics now occupies a tenuous place on the margins of curriculum in most public schools. Administrators of schools and districts with limited resources, teachers, and students of ancient Greek and Roman culture and language confront many questions regarding the relevance and utility of including the Classics in education that must address modern challenges. In this book, Toni Ryan argues that the Classics provide students with a uniquely wide range of opportunities for critical examination of the connections among language, cultural constructions of power and knowledge, and oppression in society. She proposes a rationale for incorporating a critical approach to classical studies in American public schools as a path to exploring social justice issues. Critical pedagogy in Classics offers a platform for illuminating paths for critical awareness, reflection, and action in the quest to understand and address the broad concerns of social justice. Ryan asserts the potential for education in Classics to be reconstructed to empower and emancipate, particularly through the exploration of philosophical questions that have been pondered in classical cultures (and in classical studies) since antiquity. For public school educators and students, the examination of classical language and culture allows us to safely explore critical questions in an admittedly unsafe world. Those questions that are eternally ours, that are eternally centered in the human condition, are the province of Classics.

John M. Ryan
R2,680 Discovery Miles 26 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Guide to Food Safety and Quality During Transportation" provides a sound foundation for the improvement of the transportation sector responsible for the movement of food. While food safety agencies have been focused on producer, processor, retail, and restaurant food safety, the industry that moves the food has been largely overlooked. Ensuring trucks and containers are properly cleaned and disinfected, proper maintenance of refrigeration temperatures during transport, and avoiding paperwork delays are all areas of concern. Lack of government oversight has resulted in multiple, non-standardized approaches to food safety that are inspection-dependent.

This book focuses specifically on the food movers normally overlooked by today's food safety auditors, compliance schemes, government agencies, quality control personnel, and transportation executives. It outlines delivery control solutions and provides basic standards designed to protect the transportation industry, as well as addressing problems associated with food transportation and practical solutions that are focused on container sanitation and traceability food safety and quality needs.
Explores food transportation in transition including science, research, current writings and law, bringing the reader quickly up to date on industry practices and trendsPresents case studies of the latest resources for identifying, tracking, and addressing safe transport issuesIncludes FDA and USDA Guidance information, standards and certification, and food safety and quality planning procedures to establish a foundation for transportation system prevention, implementation, standardization, measurement and improvement

Methodologies in Semantic Fieldwork (Hardcover): M. Ryan Bochnak, Lisa Matthewson Methodologies in Semantic Fieldwork (Hardcover)
M. Ryan Bochnak, Lisa Matthewson
R2,483 Discovery Miles 24 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume discusses methodological issues in conducting elicitation on semantic topics in a fieldwork situation. In twelve chapters discussing 11 language families from four continents, authors draw on their own fieldwork experience, pairing explicit methodological proposals with concrete examples of their use in the field. Several chapters cover issues specific to semantic topics such as modality, comparison, tense and aspect, and definiteness, while others focus on elicitation techniques more generally, addressing methodological issues such as the creation of elicitation plans, the choice of language in which to conduct elicitation, and the status of translation tasks. Together, the chapters of this volume demonstrate that elicitation on semantic topics, when conducted following sound methodologies, can and does produce reliable results. Given the high number of languages currently classified as endangered, conducting one-on-one fieldwork with native speaker consultants is critical for gathering new empirical findings that bear on linguistic theory.

Neoconservatism and the New American Century (Hardcover): M. Ryan Neoconservatism and the New American Century (Hardcover)
M. Ryan
R1,413 Discovery Miles 14 130 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In the aftermath of 9/11, neoconservatism became one of the most talked-about influences on US foreign policy. Both critics and supporters have been united by the belief that neoconservatism, good or bad, is an ideology characterized by its commitment to promoting democracy overseas for strategic or moral reasons or both. In "Neoconservatism and the New American Century, "Maria Ryan argues that this purported commitment to democracy was never more than a secondary or tertiary concern and that, since 1989, the neoconservatives have consciously and deliberately prioritized strategic interests over moral ones in order to preserve America's "unipolar moment."

R6,649 Discovery Miles 66 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The first edition of conflict and catastrophe was produced in 2002 and a second, successful edition, followed in 2009. The decision to produce these works sprung from painful problems experienced by colleagues and authors themselves during many humanitarian and related deployments. The guide for both editions was to provide, in one volume, an entry level text covering all aspects of deployment, with an emphasis on medicine and healthcare in these environments. This third revised, expanded and updated edition of Conflict and Catastrophe Medicine: A Practical Guide follows its successful predecessors in providing a framework for use by health professionals visiting a resource constrained environment. Encompassing problems brought about by local conflict or natural disasters, the book covers preparation, organisation, logistics, treatment of major trauma and medical emergencies, and the special problems of delivering medicine in a hostile environment. This book comprehensively tackles: Self-preparation of health professionals to face a range of medical and related problems which occur in hostile and remote environments; War and disaster medicine, covering acute management, rehabilitation, reconstruction and prevention; Bridging the fields of medicine, nursing, international relations, history, politics and economics. The book also touches on nutrition, infection, trauma, psychiatry and psychological medicine and training.

Peer Relationships and Adjustment at School (Hardcover, New): Allison M. Ryan, Gary W Ladd Peer Relationships and Adjustment at School (Hardcover, New)
Allison M. Ryan, Gary W Ladd
R2,822 Discovery Miles 28 220 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume brings together an impressive array of respected scholars to examine the varied and complex ways in which peers influence adolescents' beliefs and behaviors in the school context. The breadth of peer influence on academic and social adjustment is evident in the wide variety of topics covered in the present volume. Throughout the chapters, scholars provide unique insights regarding the complex ways that the academic and social spheres of adolescents' lives are interconnected. Collectively, the chapters in this volume expand current knowledge and theory in peer relations research by (a) exploring different types of peer relations (e.g., close friendships, peer groups) and different peer dynamics (e.g., popularity, bullying) that emerge in the school context, (b) examining different processes that explain why and how peers influence each other in school, (c) considering developmental issues during adolescence that may be critical to understanding peers and adjustment at school and (d) providing information about how teacher practices or programs influence peer relations and school adjustment. Peer Relationships and Adjustment in School is an important volume for researchers and practitioners interested in social development, peer relationships and youth engagement and achievement in school.

Intrinsic Motivation and Self-Determination in Human Behavior (Hardcover, 1985 ed.): Edward L. Deci, Richard M Ryan Intrinsic Motivation and Self-Determination in Human Behavior (Hardcover, 1985 ed.)
Edward L. Deci, Richard M Ryan
R6,647 Discovery Miles 66 470 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Early in this century, most empirically oriented psychologists believed that all motivation was based in the physiology of a set of non-nervous system tissue needs. The theories of that era reflected this belief and used it in an attempt to explain an increasing number of phenomena. It was not until the 1950s that it became irrefutably clear that much of human motivation is based not in these drives, but rather in a set of innate psychological needs. Their physiological basis is less understood; and as concepts, these needs lend themselves more easily to psycho logical than to physiological theorizing. The convergence of evidence from a variety of scholarly efforts suggests that there are three such needs: self-determination, competence, and interpersonal relatedness. This book is primarily about self-determination and competence (with particular emphasis on the former), and about the processes and structures that relate to these needs. The need for interpersonal relat edness, while no less important, remains to be explored, and the findings from those explorations will need to be integrated with the present theory to develop a broad, organismic theory of human motivation. Thus far, we have articulated self-determination theory, which is offered as a working theory-a theory in the making. To stimulate the research that will allow it to evolve further, we have stated self-determination theory in the form of minitheories that relate to more circumscribed domains, and we have developed paradigms for testing predictions from the various minitheories."

The Moral Economies of American Authorship - Reputation, Scandal, and the Nineteenth-Century Literary Marketplace (Hardcover):... The Moral Economies of American Authorship - Reputation, Scandal, and the Nineteenth-Century Literary Marketplace (Hardcover)
Susan M. Ryan
R2,109 Discovery Miles 21 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Moral Economies of American Authorship argues that the moral character of authors became a kind of literary property within mid-nineteenth-century America's expanding print marketplace, shaping the construction, promotion, and reception of texts as well as of literary reputations. Using a wide range of printed materials-prefaces, dedications, and other paratexts as well as book reviews, advertisements, and editorials that appeared in the era's magazines and newspapers-The Moral Economies of American Authorship recovers and analyzes the circulation of authors' moral currency, attending not only to the marketing of apparently ironclad status but also to the period's not-infrequent author scandals and ensuing attempts at recuperation. These preoccupations prove to be more than a historical curiosity-they prefigure the complex (if often disavowed) interdependence of authorial character and literary value in contemporary scholarship and pedagogy. Combining broad investigations into the marketing and reception of books with case studies that analyze the construction and repair of particular authors' reputations (e.g., James Fenimore Cooper, Mary Prince, Elizabeth Keckley, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and E.D.E.N. Southworth), the book constructs a genealogy of the field's investments in and uses of authorial character. In the nineteenth century's deployment of moral character as a signal element in the marketing, reception, and canonization of books and authors, we see how biography both vexed and created literary status, adumbrating our own preoccupations while demonstrating how malleable-and how recuperable-moral authority could be.
