Ageing populations have gradually become a major concern in many
industrialised countries over the past fifty years, drawing the
attention of both politics and science. The target of a raft of
health and social policies, older people are often identified as a
specific, and vulnerable, population. At the same time, ageing has
become a specialisation in many disciplines - medicine, sociology,
psychology, to name but three - and a discipline of its own:
gerontology. This book questions the framing of old age by focusing
on the relationships between policy making and the production of
knowledge. The first part explores how the meeting of scientific
expertise and the politics of old age anchors the construction of
both individual and collective relationships to the future. Part II
brings to light the many ways in which issues relating to ageing
can be instrumentalised and ideologised in several public debate
arenas. Part III argues that scientific knowledge itself composes
with objectivity, bringing ideologies of its own to the table, and
looks at how this impacts discourse about ageing. In the final
part, the contributors discuss how the frames can themselves be
experienced at different levels of the division of labour, whether
it is by people who work on them (legislators or scientists), by
people working with them (professional carers) or by older people
themselves. Unpacking the political and moral dimensions of
scientific research on ageing, this cutting-edge volume brings
together a range of multidisciplinary, European perspectives, and
will be of use to all those interested in old age and the social
sciences.

An intriguing look at the history of alcoholism and its dramatic
effects, from the first fermented grape to current advances in
genetic research. Alcoholism tells the story of a disease familiar
to many yet not well understood. It is the first "biography" of
alcohol abuse that gauges its devastating effects on the body, the
family, the economy, and the community. Alcoholism provides the
latest understanding of the disease as a behavioral dysfunction and
a biological condition. Coverage includes the origins of alcohol
and the discovery of alcoholism as a medical disease; the biology
of alcoholism and its effects on the body; and current diagnostic
and treatment methods for alcoholism. In addition, the book
explores the effects on society of such alcoholism-related problems
as domestic abuse, fetal alcohol syndrome, drunk driving, and
suicide, as well as promising new directions in alcoholism
research, awareness, treatment, and prevention.
Medical histories of Belgium reshapes Belgian history of medicine
by bringing together a new generation of scholars. Going beyond a
chronological narrative, the book offers new insights by
questioning classic themes of the history of medicine: physicians,
institutions and the nation state. While retracing specific Belgian
characteristics, it also engages with broader European developments
in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Medical histories of
Belgium will appeal to Historians of Belgium in various subfields,
especially cultural history and political history and medical
historians and medical practitioners seeking the historical context
of their activities. -- .
Davanti Nella Gara, an Italian bicycle company, makes the best
racing bikes in the world. But after decades of market dominance,
competitors have brought the industry leader back to the Peloton.
The company's second-generation owner longs for retirement, but a
tired product lineup is pushing down profits and the firm's market
value will never support his ride into the sunset. The flawed but
beloved owner seeks out the counsel of an old friend and successful
businessman, who steers him toward a fast and remarkable
transformation, one fueled by a relentless focus on innovation
excellence. An engaging business novel, Winning Innovation dives
into the art and science of innovation; the thrills of the European
bike-racing circuit; the vibrant landscape and cuisine of Italy;
and a cast of intriguing characters who work to put Davanti on the
road to sustained prosperity. The company's leader isn't afraid to
learn and apply new ideas to reenergize his company, and finds he
cares more about his employees than he could ever imagine. A young
innovator struggles to see a product idea to fruition as well as
rise into management - and he falls in love along the way. A newly
promoted R&D director brings teamwork and transparency to
product development and aligns the entire company around
innovation. With the help of a seasoned and persistent change
agent, in just a year, Davanti deploys a well-defined and
-sequenced transformation - a complete and seamless process that
can be replicated and scaled by most companies. The leader engages
associates in pursuit of the right vision and strategy, candidly
supporting them all as they unleash their creative sparks, work
through personality conflicts, and take on real-world challenges
faced by companies every day. They learn and apply traditional
R&D principles in new ways (e.g., cost of delay, sprints, fail
fast, late start) and successfully leverage emerging innovation and
change-management principles (e.g., idea-creation events, knowledge
management, workplace humility, visual management, lean project
management). And an aligned, three-phase innovation process - from
idea creation to technology development and product design -
provides the innovation infrastructure the company needs for
revenue creation and success beyond racing bikes. From a top-heavy
organization dominated by power struggles and finger-pointing
emerges a new Davanti Nella Gara - a flattened, innovative company
with: Clear vision and endorsed goals and strategy Speed,
responsiveness, and agility Widespread, successful creativity
Collaboration and teamwork Superior risk management Respect for
people Unquestionable ethics Changed leadership and associate
behaviors Project management excellence Rapid problem-solving and
experimentation Not just the story of an R&D transformation,
Winning Innovation illustrates a companywide transformation of a
magnitude that only superior R&D can make possible. It may well
be the first book to chronologically introduce the principles for a
complete innovation excellence transformation along with the
parallel people transformation that is necessary for real change to
occur. The end result for Davanti Nella Gara is a dominant new
culture based on respect and humility, highly efficient processes
that will deliver a wealth of innovations, sales, and profits for
many years to come, and an owner who leaves a bright future for the
people and company he's known and loved his entire life.

Can I Teach That? Negotiating Taboo Language and Controversial
Topics in the Language Arts Classroom is a collection of stories,
strategies, advice, and documents collected for teachers who are
using or plan to use materials or implement policies they know may
be controversial. It is for any teacher dedicated to engaging their
students in the complex, challenging, and rewarding activities of
reading and writing, for any teacher committed to speaking honestly
with students. For any teacher, period. Because when we decide to
work with young people, when we commit to sharing books and ideas
that engage their hearts and minds, when we strive to get
adolescents to think critically and write honestly, we open
ourselves up to suspicion and critique from someone, somewhere, no
matter how above reproach we feel our materials and strategies are.
Few language arts teachers will experience a full-blown challenge
to the content of their curriculum, but many may self-censor or
suffer through awkward and challenging conversations with
colleagues, administrators, parents, and other members of their
community. This book is for those times when teachers are called on
to defend and legitimize their use of controversial material in
their classroom--material that they know reflects students'
reality, even as it makes adults uncomfortable and fearful about
their inability to protect children from that very reality.
In 2005, Goodyear s research and development (RandD) engine was not
performing up to its full potential. The RandD organization
developed high-quality tires, but the projects were not always
successful. Goodyear embarked on a major initiative to transform
its innovation creation processes by learning, understanding, and
applying lean product development principles. Within five years,
Goodyear saw its product development cycle times slashed by 70
percent, on-time delivery performance rise close to 100 percent,
and throughput improve three-fold all achieved with no increase in
the RandD budget.Lean-Driven Innovation: Powering Product
Development at The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company describes in
great detail how the Goodyear team was able to achieve such
significant improvements. Revealing the ups and downs of this
successful transformation, the book shares experiences of how this
seismic change was managed, how people were engaged, and how
Goodyear dramatically reinvigorated its product development and
innovation processes and, in the process, delivered substantial
more value to customers and to the company. The book also explains
how lean product development helped Goodyear dramatically improve
revenue by having every new product available when the market
needed it. Presenting wide-ranging perspectives from all levels of
leadership, this book is ideal for anyone in RandD daring to take
on a lean initiative in RandD or who is struggling with a lean
transformation that is not delivering to its full potential. Since
the book focuses on universal lean principles, it is as insightful
to other manufacturing and nonmanufacturing disciplines in any
industry as well. The book presents invaluable insights gained by

'This book will inspire readers to envision what is possible even
in the smallest, most improbable spaces'. Publishers Weekly 'Just
looking at Marianne's stunning photographs made me want to go
outside and start re-thinking my plot....I defy any reader not to
find a style they can feel comfortable with in this book, there are
plenty of ideas which can be adopted, even for the most difficult
location'. Reckless Gardener There is no one way to design a
garden. The variations and breadth of possibilities are astonishing
but it is the choices of the individual that make the world of
gardens so exciting. Creating a garden is part common sense and
part instinct but we all need inspiration to help us realize the
garden we want. Garden Design: A Book of Ideas is the must-have
visual reference for garden owners, architects and designers. With
over 600 images by award-winning photographer Marianne Majerus and
incisive advice from garden designer and best-selling writer Heidi
Howcroft, this book takes the reader from getting the concept right
to choosing the perfect finishing touches for your outdoor space.
The gardens featured are large and small, urban and rural in a wide
range of styles from contemporary to classical to naturalistic.
Every aspect of designing a garden is explored, from assessing your
plot and soil to choosing a style as your inspiration, selecting
the right components (be they hard landscaping, boundaries or
plants) and tackling more challenging spaces.
Gardens have never been as important as they are today. The breadth
of styles and types is hugely varied. Everything goes, whether
inspired by the past or looking towards the future, from
traditional vegetable plots to vertical gardens and from
nature-filled designs to sleek, modernist creations. Choosing what
suits your space can be a daunting prospect and everyone, even the
professionals, needs help to realize opportunities and create
outdoor spaces in tune with their personal needs and dreams. A
garden is what we make it: there is no right or wrong way and each
is unique. Richly illustrated by the photos of award-winning
photographer Marianne Majerus and with illuminating text by
landscape architect Heidi Howcroft, this book shows what is
possible for every type of garden, from challenging small spaces to
expansive plots. Design tools are explained, planting styles
explored, and inspiration is drawn from a wide variety of locations
and climates to appeal to garden owners and designers everywhere.
The book is not only a companion to Garden Design: A Book of Ideas
but is also a valuable style catalogue and sourcebook in its own
right, encouraging and inspiring readers to discover their own
garden style - be it contemporary or traditional, cottage-style or
urban minimalist.

Melanism: Evolution in Action describes investigations into a
ubiquitous biological phenomenon, the existence of dark, or
melanic, forms of many species of mammals, insects, and some
plants. Melanism is a particularly exciting phenomenon in terms of
our understanding of evolution. Unlike many other polymorphisms,
the rise of a melanic population within a species is a visible
alteration. Not only this, but melanism may sometimes occur
dramatically quickly compared to other evolutionary change.
Examples of melanism include one of the most famous illustrations
of Darwinian natural selection, the peppered moth. This book, the
first written on melanism since 1973, gives a lucid and up-to-date
appraisal of the subject. The book is divided into ten chapters.
The first four chapters place melanism into its historical and
scientific context, with illustrations of its occurrence, and
physical and genetic properties. Chapters 5-9 look in more detail
at melanism in moths and ladybirds, explaining the diversity of
evolutionary reasons for melanism, and the complexities underlying
this apparently simple phenomenon. The final chapter shows how the
study of melanism has contibuted to our understanding of biological
evolution as a whole. Written in an engaging and readable style, by
an author whose enthusiasm and depth of knowledge is apparent
throughout, this book will be welcomed by all students and
researchers in the fields of evolution, ecology, entomology, and
genetics. It will also be of relevance to professional and amateur
entomologists and lepidopterists alike.
In the past, our ideas of psychiatric hospitals and their history
have been shaped by objects like straitjackets, cribs, and binding
belts. These powerful objects were often used as a synonym for
psychiatry and the way psychiatric patients were treated, yet very
little is known about the agency of these objects and their
appropriation by staff and patients. By focusing on material
cultures, this book offers a new perspective on the history of
psychiatry: it enables a narrative in which practicing psychiatry
is part of a complex entanglement in which power is constantly
negotiated. Scholars from different academic disciplines show how
this material-based approach opens up new perspectives on the
agency and imagination of men and women inside psychiatry.
A beautifully illustrated history of the world famous landscape
garden at Stourhead, created by generations of the Hoare banking
dynasty. Cross the south lawn at Stourhead and descend through the
ancient and rare trees. Soon you will see a great lake appear,
decorated with classical temples and arched bridge that lunges to
the other side of the water. Continue on and you will find a
mystical, jagged grotto; a gothic hideaway; gods, muses and saints.
This is how Henry Hoare - known as Henry the Magnificent - would
have approached the garden he designed with Henry Flitcroft. Did he
imagine himself as a journeying Aeneas, or was he recreating a
Claud Lorrain landscape? This is the first history - in colour - of
a unique landscape created by generations of the Hoare banking
family. It follows its evolution, describing how flights of folly,
individual flair and tastes, combined with careful stewardship,
have formed a national treasure and one of the finest example of
the English landscape garden. The book includes a foreword by James
Stourton and newly commissioned photography by renowned garden
photographer Marianne Majerus.

Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - International
Politics - Region: USA, grade: 1,7, University of Leicester,
language: English, abstract: When in May 2011 American TV networks
first announced the killing of Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden, the
nation-wide scenes of publicly expressed joy and relief witnessed
thereafter may have seemed to some strikingly reminiscent of that
other memorable day in mid-August 1945 when American citizens could
at long last celebrate victory over the Japanese Empire in World
War II. However, one might argue, is it possible that popular
jubilation over Bin Laden's death might ultimately not also have
reflected some kind of premature or even false belief in Al-Qaeda's
simultaneous and permanent demise as a functioning terrorist
organization as well?
