"All of us teach." So begins this powerful collection presented by Mark Schwehn. If we take seriously the lessons in Teaching and Learning, then our lives will begin to change because our attitudes about the basic daily activities of teaching and learning will be transformed.

We need a rich account of good teaching, not just the classroom variety but the activity that is part of our everyday relationships. If we do not develop that account now, Schwehn fears we will lose our capacity to fully understand teaching and learning and their historical and human importance.

To meet that need, Schwehn has wisely chosen to focus our attention on great teachers in the act of teaching and on their students in the act of learning. He challenges us, based on those images and the ideas they generate, to question our assumptions about ourselves and others as everyday teachers and learners, and about our methods and purposes both inside and outside the classroom.

The reader can explore an impressive array of texts and teachers, including Socrates, St. Augustine, the Old and New Testaments, Lincoln, Wittgenstein, Nietzsche, and James Joyce. Schwehn also includes excerpts from the Desert Fathers and Hassidic Masters. All the texts open our eyes to a wider and deeper view of teaching and learning.

Many colleges and universities informally highlight the value of mentoring among academic professionals. Yet scholars often lack clear definitions, goals, practices, and commitments that help them actually reap the benefits mentoring offers. As new faculty members from younger generations continue to face evolving challenges while also reshaping institutions, their ability to connect with more experienced mentors is critical to their vocations—and to the future of higher education. In Cultivating Mentors, a distinguished group of contributors explores the practice of mentoring in Christian higher education. Drawing on traditional theological understandings of the mentee-mentor relationship, they consider what goals should define such relationships and what practices make their cultivation possible among educators. With special attention to generational dynamics, they discuss how mentoring can help institutions navigate generational faculty transitions and cultivate rising leaders. Contributors include: David Kinnaman Tim Clydesdale Margaret Diddams Edgardo Colón-Emeric Rebecca C. Hong Tim Elmore Beck A. Taylor Stacy A. Hammons This book offers valuable insights and practical recommendations for faculty members, administrators, and policy makers. Whether pursuing their vocation in Christian or secular institutions, Christian scholars will benefit from the sharing of wisdom mapped out in Cultivating Mentors.

Exiles from Eden - Religion and the Academic Vocation in America (Paperback, New ed): Mark R. Schwehn Exiles from Eden - Religion and the Academic Vocation in America (Paperback, New ed)
Mark R. Schwehn

Exiles From Eden sounds a call to the American academic community to begin seeking a solution to the many problems facing higher education today by rediscovering a proper sense of its vocation. Schwehn argues that the modern university has forgotten its spiritual foundations and that it needs to reappropriate those foundations before it can creatively and responsibly reform itself. The first part of the book offers a critical examination of the ethos of the modern academy, especially its understanding of knowledge, teaching, and learning. Schwehn then formulates a description of the "new cultural context" within which the world of higher learning is presently situated. Finally, he develops a view of knowledge and inquiry that is linked essentially to character, friendship, and community. In the process, he demonstrates that the practice of certain spiritual virtues is and always has been essential to the process of genuine learning - even within the secular academy. Schwehn critiques philosophies of higher education he sees as misguided, from Weber and Henry Adams to Derek Bok, Allan Bloom, and William G. Perry, Jr., drawing out valid insights, while always showing the theological underpinnings of the so-called secular thinkers. He emphasizes the importance of community, drawing on both the secular communitarian theory of Richard Rorty and that of the Christian theorist Parker Palmer. Finally, he outlines his own prescription for a classroom-centered spiritual community of scholars. Exiles From Eden examines the relationship between religion and higher learning in a way that is at once historical and philosophical and that is both critical and constructive. It calls for nothing lessthan a reunion of the intellectual, the moral, and the spiritual virtues within the world of higher education in America. It will engage all those concerned with higher education in America today: faculty, students, parents, alumni, administrators, trustees, and foundation officers.
