R2,194 Discovery Miles 21 940 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

It is now more than two decades since the world stood idly by, witnessing the genocide taking place in Rwanda in 1994. During the one hundred days of killing nearly one million men, women and children were murdered. In many ways, the Rwandan genocide marked the victory of evil: not only were people murdered by their own countrymen, neighbors, friends, and religious leaders, but it was a genocide that had been foreseen and that could have been prevented. This book explores the genocide's historical background, the genocidal ideology and political context (its perpetrators and victims, and the strategy and 'methodology' of the killings); its international dimensions (in particular the involvement or calculated non-involvement of France, the U.S., Belgium, the UN and the other African countries); and the dire question of whether the world could have prevented the massacre. It further draws parallels between the Rwandan genocide and other genocides in the twentieth century; and relates to the policy of punishing murderers by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in Arusha, Tanzania, and to the traditional judicial system called gacaca. Finally, it dwells briefly on what happened in Rwanda after the genocide.

Social Psychology: Goals in Interaction - Pearson New International Edition (Paperback, 5th edition): Douglas Kenrick, Steven... Social Psychology: Goals in Interaction - Pearson New International Edition (Paperback, 5th edition)
Douglas Kenrick, Steven Neuberg, Robert Cialdini
R2,670 Discovery Miles 26 700 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

For an undergraduate introductory level course in social psychology. Social Psychology: Goals in Interaction reveals the motives behind social behavior-why people love, hate, lead, and follow, for example- and bridges the person and the social situation. A unique integrated approach to social behavior: What do terrorist bombings, testosterone, one-minute "hurry dates," Facebook, and political smear campaigns have to do with one another? Social Psychology textbooks typically provide a laundry list of interesting, but disconnected facts and theories. This standard approach grabs interest but falls short as a way to learn. Kenrick, Neuberg, and Cialdini instead provide an integrative approach, one that both builds upon traditional lessons learned by the field and pushes those lessons to the cutting-edge. By organizing each chapter around the two broad questions-"What are the goals that underlie the behavior in question?" and "What factors in the person and the situation connect to each goal?" -the book presents the discipline as a coherent framework for understanding human behavior. Expanding he integrative theme in this edition, KNC highlights social psychology as the ultimate bridge discipline-connectingthe different findings and theories of social psychology, exploring the field's links to other areas of psychology (e.g., clinical, organizational, and neuroscience), and bridging to other important academic disciplines (e.g., anthropology, biology, economics, medicine, and law). Opening mysteries: Each chapter begins with a mystery, designed not only to grab student interest, but also to organize the ensuing discussion of scientific research: Why did the beautiful and talented artist Frida Kahlo fall for the much older, and much less attractive, Diego Rivera, and then tolerate his numerous extramarital affairs? What psychological forces led the Dalai Lama, the most exalted personage in Tibet, to forge a lifelong friendship with a foreign vagabond openly scorned by Tibetan peasants? Why would a boy falsely confess to murdering his own mother? The latest scholarship, engaging writing, engrossing real-world stories and the authors' strengths as renowned researchers and expert teachers, all come together to make the fifth edition of Social Psychology: Goals in Interaction an accessible and engaging read for students, while providing a modern and cohesive approach for their teachers. Protecting Chips Against Hold Time Violations Due to Variability (Hardcover, 2012): Gustavo Neuberger, Gilson Wirth, Ricardo... Protecting Chips Against Hold Time Violations Due to Variability (Hardcover, 2012)
Gustavo Neuberger, Gilson Wirth, Ricardo Reis
R2,854 Discovery Miles 28 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With the development of Very-Deep Sub-Micron technologies, process variability is becoming increasingly important and is a very important issue in the design of complex circuits. Process variability is the statistical variation of process parameters, meaning that these parameters do not have always the same value, but become a random variable, with a given mean value and standard deviation. This effect can lead to several issues in digital circuit design.

The logical consequence of this parameter variation is that circuit characteristics, as delay and power, also become random variables. Because of the delay variability, not all circuits will now have the same performance, but some will be faster and some slower. However, the slowest circuits may be so slow that they will not be appropriate for sale. On the other hand, the fastest circuits that could be sold for a higher price can be very leaky, and also not very appropriate for sale. A main consequence of power variability is that the power consumption of some circuits will be different than expected, reducing reliability, average life expectancy and warranty of products. Sometimes the circuits will not work at all, due to reasons associated with process variations. At the end, these effects result in lower yield and lower profitability.

To understand these effects, it is necessary to study the consequences of variability in several aspects of circuit design, like logic gates, storage elements, clock distribution, and any other that can be affected by process variations. The main focus of this book will be storage elements.

Roy R Neuberger - An Autobiography So Far, So Good - The First 94 Years (Hardcover): RR Neuberger Roy R Neuberger - An Autobiography So Far, So Good - The First 94 Years (Hardcover)
RR Neuberger
R1,224 R1,020 Discovery Miles 10 200 Save R204 (17%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Mention the name Roy Neuberger and several awe-inspiring images come to mind. There's the stock market neophyte who arrived on Wall Street just months before the Panic of 1929—and protected his capital by shorting RCA stock. There's the savvy businessman who founded Neuberger&Berman, a lucrative brokerage firm that today manages about $50 billion. Then, there is the esteemed philanthropist and patron of the arts who has graciously donated most of his private art collection to museums and institutions around the country.

Now, there is the vibrant nonagenarian who, as first-time author, shares his extraordinary life story in So Far, So Good—The First 94 Years. As inspirational as it is compelling, this stirring memoir recounts Neuberger's remarkable journey and enduring reign as one of the most prominent and fascinating figures of finance.

Roy R. Neuberger was born at the turn of the century to a businessman father and a musician mother, both of whom passed on to him qualities and interests that would profoundly influence his life. He spent his earliest years in Bridgeport, Connecticut, then moved with his family to New York City, a place he's called home for more than eight decades. Though he had a happy, comfortable childhood, it was tempered with tragedy when, in 1912, his mother died, and his father passed away just four years later.

After his freshman term at New York University, Neuberger left to begin working at the B. Altman & Company department store. It was there that he learned about business and trading, and was introduced to the world of art. Following three "extremely valuable" years at Altman's, in 1925 Neuberger set out for Paris, where he remained for almost four years. It was an unforgettable time during which he travelled, studied art, and befriended Thornton Wilder, the art historian Meyer Schapiro, and other notable Americans in Paris.

Returning to New York City in 1929, Neuberger landed a job on Wall Street at Halle & Stieglitz — just seven months before the infamous Crash. In a pulsating, you-are-there account, Neuberger recounts the tumultuous events leading up to —and following —the Panic, and reveals how he managed to emerge unscathed at a time when others were doing anything but. He also offers an intriguing behind-the-scenes look at his remarkable career since, with details on the launching of Neuberger&Berman; the creation of Guardian, one of the first no-load mutual funds; his success with closed-end investment trusts; and his extraordinary winning run during the market crash of 1987. Generously sharing a wealth of professional wisdom, Neuberger offers his "ten principles of successful investing," as well as penetrating and provocative ruminations on topics ranging from the economy and the federal budget to Social Security and the future of the market.

Neuberger speaks eloquently about his lifelong appreciation of art. He describes the formation of his valuable and eclectic collection (most of which he's now donated), his firm commitment to supporting the careers of artists, his role as trustee of both The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum, and his involvement with the creation and sustenance of the Neuberger Museum of Art in Purchase, New York.

At the age of 94, Roy Neuberger is still going strong, trading every day, and enjoying life to the fullest. His dramatic story, told here with humor, insight, and complete candor, is part social history, part investment lesson, part personal reminiscence. So Far, So Good —The First 94 Years is a landmark work not to be missed.

Praise for So Far, so Good—the first 94 years

"Roy Neuberger has celebrated life for almost a century. He roared in Paris in the 1920s, assembled one of the great contemporary art collections of the world, and built a great investment firm. He has shared the journey with us through this book, and it is one helluva ride." —Byron Wein, Managing Director, Morgan Stanley & Co.

"What a life! Roy Neuberger's affecting memoir chronicles the passion and generosity that helped him overcome early adversity to fill his charmed, long life with meaning and accomplishment. Readers will benefit from his great advice about making money, and will take pleasure in learning how he used his fortune to acquire and share wonderful works of art." —Agnes Gund, President, Museum of Modern Art

"Roy never fails to amuse and enlighten. Over the years, he's taught me many things I didn't know I didn't know." —Jim Rogers, author of The Investment Biker.

"Roy's memoirs read as if he'd chatted them to you on his regular matinal walks —sprinkled with engaging personal insights, and no end of advice for which the most compelling argument is Roy's own success. A most rewarding read." —Philippe de Montebello, Director, The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

This innovative volume challenges the ways we look at both cinema and cultural history by shifting the focus from the centrality of the visual and the literary toward the recognition of acoustic culture as formative of the Soviet and post-Soviet experience. Leading experts and emerging scholars from film studies, musicology, music theory, history, and cultural studies examine the importance of sound in Russian, Soviet, and post-Soviet cinema from a wide range of interdisciplinary perspectives. Addressing the little-known theoretical and artistic experimentation with sound in Soviet cinema, changing practices of voice delivery and translation, and issues of aesthetic ideology and music theory, this book explores the cultural and historical factors that influenced the use of voice, music, and sound on Soviet and post-Soviet screens.

R1,687 Discovery Miles 16 870 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Picturing Russian Empire offers a new way to approach the history of Russia as an empire and as a state located in a world characterized by a churning, dynamic exchange of people, ideas, and practices. It presents readers with a visual tour of the lands and peoples that constituted the Russian Empire and those that confronted it, defied it, accommodated to it, and shaped it at various times in more than a millennium of history. Bringing together scholars and experts from across the world and from various disciplines, Picturing Russian Empire consistently raises big historical questions to stimulate readers to think about images as embedded in the diverse, lived worlds of the Russian empire. The authors challenge the reader to not only to see images as the creations of individuals, but as objects circulating among viewers in a variety of contexts, creating new impressions, meanings, and experiences.

R4,040 Discovery Miles 40 400 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Twenty four years after investment managers decided to implement Standard & Poor's 500 indexing strategy, the verdict is in. The first indexers beat more than 99% of all actively managed stock funds. Over the last ten years, funds based on the S&P 500 out-performed more than 80% of all mutual funds. Today about $450 billion is indexed to the S&P 500, almost 10% of the total market value of all stocks traded in the US. The strategy has been applied to other asset classes, including bonds and real estate. In total, indexing now accounts for more than 25% of the investment methodology of all pension funds in the US. Topics include: choosing a benchmark; overview of the marketplace; using derivatives to index; performance track record versus active management; index methodology and other styles; and index price effects on constituent securities. Albert S. Neubert is director of the Domestic S&P Indexes Unit within the Equity Services Group.

Reuben Sachs (Paperback): Amy Levy Reuben Sachs (Paperback)
Amy Levy; Preface by Julia Neuberger
R569 Discovery Miles 5 690 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This 1888 novel is about a couple who love each other, but his political ambitions demand money and she is poor. "Reuben Sachs" would be a fairly standard late-Victorian novel about the cruelty of the marriage market if it were not imbued with feminist polemic. Amy Levy (1861-89) was sharply critical of the empty lives led by women with nothing to do all day except gossip, play cards and go shopping. The setting is the Anglo-Jewish community in Bayswater, portrayed with a sardonic gaze that shocked contemporary readers. Yet the author's theme was broader, for she was in part reacting against Daniel Deronda: she believed that George Eliot had romanticised her Jewish characters and that no novelist had yet described the modern Jew with 'his surprising virtues and no less surprising vices.'Oscar Wilde observed: 'Its directness, its uncompromising truths, its depth of feeling, and above all, its absence of any single superfluous word, make "Reuben Sachs", in some sort, a classic'. Julia Neuberger writes in her Preface, 'This is a novel about women, and Jewish women, about families, and Jewish families, about snobbishness, and Jewish snobbishness'; while in the "Independent on Sunday", Lisa Allardice said: 'Sadder but no less sparkling than Miss Pettigrew, "Reuben Sachs" is another forgotten classic by an accomplished female novelist. Amy Levy might be described as a Jewish Jane Austen.'

African Nationalism (Hardcover): Benyamin Neuberger African Nationalism (Hardcover)
Benyamin Neuberger; Translated by Merav Datan
R4,157 Discovery Miles 41 570 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

African Nationalism offers an innovative perspective on the creation of nations and nationalism, and the role of race in nationalism overall, by bringing together a compilation of debates on African nationalism, from Pan-Africanism up to the present day. The book examines African nationalism in comparative perspective, mainly with the UK, France, and the US: the birthplaces of modern nationalism. The author suggests that the origins of African nationalism lay outside the continent and demonstrates the similarities that abound between African nationalisms across a diverse range of countries. This volume is important reading for students and scholars of nationalism, history, political science, and African studies.
