How can we develop a comprehensive understanding of the research
process in community, health and social care settings? Covering all
stages of the research process, from funding to dissemination, this
book considers the views of funders, researchers, communities and
policy makers. Drawing on practical examples and relevant
international literature, it sheds light on issues that can arise
in the process and presents solutions and strategies to deal with a
range of challenges. Organised around a series of themes that
capture the essential elements of the research process including
covering framing research in theory, commissioning and designing
research, utilisation of findings and knowledge transfer, this book
provides practical guidance for those involved in child welfare and
education, nursing and clinical practices, community studies and
the social sciences. It will be a key resource for all those who
are interested in developing their understanding of the research
and evaluation process in these areas.
Commemorating the life and work of Dr John Bennett; his lifelong
contribution to Early Childhood Education and Care, and his ongoing
influence on policy, research and practice in this field, In Search
of Social Justice is a tribute to a preeminent scholar and his
vision for an equitable and high-quality start for all children.
Working tirelessly to raise the profile of Early Childhood
Education and Care, and prioritise the rights and well-being of
children and families in national and international policy, John
Bennet played an invaluable role in improving the position of young
children globally. In Search of Social Justice takes John's legacy
as a starting point for critical examination of the changing
discourse on Early Childhood Education, and argues for the
continued relevance of his approach. Drawing on personal
reflections, vignettes and testimonials from eminent authors who
shared their professional lives with him, the book foregrounds
John's insistence that we must continue to shape policy and
provision through inquiry, high-quality evidence, passion and
persistence, improving the early experiences of all young children.
As much a celebration of John's work and achievements, as a call to
collective action towards achieving his vision for equitable,
quality early childhood education and care, this is a fascinating
read for students, researchers and activists in the field of Early
Childhood Education and Care.

This edited book explores the origins and evolution of the early
childhood education and care (ECEC) system on the island of Ireland
since the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1921. While the
book acknowledges and celebrates the role of parents in caring for
and educating their young children within the home, the key focus
is on the provisions outside the home for children from birth to
six years. It critiques the historical and contemporary provision
under a number of key themes including curriculum, the policy and
legislative landscapes, inspection and regulation, Irish language
provision and professionalisation. Written by key experts and
actors from the sector, it makes a unique contribution to the
existing literature by bringing together in one collection a
critical analysis of the key themes relating to the development of
ECEC in Ireland. Moreover, signposts and signals for the future
development of the sector are integral to the book.
