Statistics for Business and Economics introduces statistics in the context of contemporary business. Emphasising statistical literacy in thinking, the text applies its concepts with real data and uses technology to develop a deeper conceptual understanding. Examples, activities, and case studies foster active learning in the classroom while emphasising intuitive concepts of probability and teaching students to make informed business decisions. The 14th Edition continues to highlight the importance of ethical behaviour in collecting, interpreting, and reporting on data, while also providing a wealth of new and updated exercises and case studies.
Study abroad is now both an international industry and an experience that can have a deep impact on students' attitudes and approaches to second language learning. Narratives of Second Language Identity in Study Abroad brings together three important research areas by exploring the impact of study abroad on second language identities through narrative research. It outlines a new model of second language identity that incorporates a range of language and personal competencies. The three main dimensions of this model are explored in chapters that begin with students' study abroad narratives, followed by the authors' in-depth analysis. Further chapters use narratives to assess the impact of programme type and individual difference. Arguing that second language identity development is one of the more important outcomes of study abroad, the book concludes with recommendations on how study abroad programmes can best achieve this outcome.
This comprehensive exploration of theoretical and practical aspects of out-of-class teaching and learning, from a variety of perspectives and in various settings around the world, includes a theoretical overview of the field, 11 data-based case studies, and practical advice on materials development for independent learning.
This book is the perfect introduction to the simple, yet immensely pleasurable, craft of creating attractive objects with nothing more than a knife and a piece of timber. Whittling is an art form that can be as simple or as complex as you like. This resource offers teachers user-friendly tools for creating a standards-based classroom that meets accountability requirements and provides a learning environment where both teachers and students can thrive. Barbara P. Benson's framework allows teachers to synthesize the best of what they already know and do with research-based best practices on learning and learners. The author emphasizes that students can best learn the required content and competencies when teachers are following the curriculum determined by the standards while: Creating a community of learners who are self-directed, interactive, cooperative, and focused on quality Making reflection a routine for everyoneTeaching content and processDeveloping more authentic student tasks and assessment methodsThe new edition of How to Meet Standards, Motivate Students, and Still Enjoy Teaching! featuresaupdated references andanew reproducibles for classroom use.
From reviews of the first edition: 'This book creates a powerful process that motivates students to self-assess, revise, and take pride in their work. It provides practical, tested strategies to implement the process in a clear, organized and meaningful way.' - from the Foreword by John P. Robson, Head of Social Sciences, Rideau High School, Ottawa-Carleton Board of Education 'Made me want to try out all the great ideas. This book is a must for a teacher's bookshelf.' - Carol Scearce, President, Enlightening Enterprises, Beverly, MA In today's standards-based and accountability-driven classroom, teachers are increasingly seeking ways to demonstrate that their students know what they are learning and are aware of why they are learning it. This groundbreaking guide shows how the combination of portfolios and student-led teacher-parent conferences can increase student understanding. Using this technique, students will be able to take charge of their learning, and are able to clearly communicate the goals of their education with fellow students, administrators, and parents. Real-life examples show how the approach has been successfully applied at any level and for any subject matter. Newly added features include: - Strategies for beginning the portfolio process with students - Current research findings that support student-led conferencing - Easy-to-use timelines and sample schedules - Masters that cut down on teacher prep-time - The latest information on electronic portfolios

The Moche, or Mochica, created an extraordinary civilization on the north coast of Peru for most of the first millennium AD. Although they had no written language with which to record their history and beliefs, the Moche built enormous ceremonial edifices and embellished them with mural paintings depicting supernatural figures and rituals. Highly skilled Moche artisans crafted remarkable ceramic vessels, which they painted with figures and scenes or modeled like sculpture, and mastered metallurgy in gold, silver, and copper to make impressive symbolic ornaments. They also wove textiles that were complex in execution and design. A senior scholar renowned for her discoveries about the Moche, Elizabeth P. Benson published the first English-language monograph on the subject in 1972. Now in this volume, she draws on decades of knowledge, as well as the findings of other researchers, to offer a grand overview of all that is currently known about the Moche. Touching on all significant aspects of Moche culture, she covers such topics as their worldview and ritual life, ceremonial architecture and murals, art and craft, supernatural beings, government and warfare, and burial and the afterlife. She demonstrates that the Moche expressed, with symbolic language in metal and clay, what cultures in other parts of the world presented in writing. Indeed, Benson asserts that the accomplishments of the Moche are comparable to those of their Mesoamerica contemporaries, the Maya, which makes them one of the most advanced civilizations of pre-Columbian America.
