ARE WE ALONE IN THE UNIVERSE? In his latest far-reaching book, The Fifth Miracle, internationally acclaimed physicist and writer Paul Davies confronts one of science's great outstanding mysteries -- the origin of life.
Three and a half billion years ago, Mars resembled Earth. It was warm and wet and could have supported primitive organisms. If life once existed on Mars, might it have originated there and traveled to Earth inside meteorites blasted into space by cosmic impacts? Davies builds on the latest scientific discoveries and theories to address the larger question: What, exactly, is life? Is it the inevitable by-product of physical laws, as many scientists maintain, or an almost miraculous accident? Are we alone in the universe, or will life emerge on all Earth-like planets? And if there is life elsewhere in the universe, is it preordained to evolve toward greater complexity and intelligence? On the answers to these deep questions hinges the ultimate purpose of mankind -- who we are and what our place might be in the unfolding drama of the cosmos.
How did the universe begin and how will it end? What is matter? What is mind, and can it survive death? What are time and space, and how do they relate to ideas about God? Is the order of the universe the result of accident or design? The most profound and age-old questions of existence -- for centuries the focus of religion and philosophy -- may soon be answered through the extraordinary advances of a field of science known as the new physics. In this illuminating work, Paul Davies, author of the acclaimed Other Worlds and The Edge of Infinity, writes that the discoveries of 20th-century physics -- relativity and the quantum theory -- are now pointing the way to a new appreciation of man and his place in the universe. They could, in fact, bring within our grasp a unified description of all creation. Demanding a radical reformulation of the most fundamental aspects of reality and a way of thinking that is in closer accord with mysticism than materialism, the new physics, says Davies, offers a surer path to God than religion. Described by The Washington Post as "impressive," God and the New Physics is a fascinating look at the impact of science on what were formerly religious issues. Elegantly written, a book for both scholars and lay readers of science, it is, according to the Christian Science Monitor, a "provocative...rewarding intellectual romp."

The traditional legal textbooks aim to give students of the law a
synoptic overview of the present state of law in a particular area.
In doing so, most books offer only a cursory assessment of how the
law came to be the way it is and what economic, political and
social forces were brought to bear during its evolution. This study
seeks to offer students a different kind of text, which takes as
its starting point the law as it was in 1945. Guiding the student
through four-and-a-half decades of almost continuous legislative
activity, Davies and Freedland show how the law was created, and
why it looks as it does today. The history explored is from 1945 to
1990, but not including the period since Mr Major succeeded Mrs
Thatcher as Prime Minister. Paul Davies is also the editor of the
"Industrial Law Journal". Mark Freedland has also written "The
Contract of Employment" and "Labour Law, Cases and Materials" (with
Paul Davies).
This lively text provides a candid inquiry into the contemporary
means by which architects get work and (for better or worse) become
famous.
In response to the reciprocal relationship between publicity and
everyday architectural practice, this book examines the mechanisms
by which architects seek publicity and manage to establish
themselves and their work ahead of their colleagues. Through the
essays of specialist contributors, this book enables the reader to
understand the complex relationship between what they see as the
built environment and the unwritten stories behind how it came
about.

Much of the modern period was dominated by a `reductionist' theory
of science. On this view, to explain any event in the world is to
reduce it down to fundamental particles, laws, and forces. In
recent years reductionism has been dramatically challenged by a
radically new paradigm called `emergence'. According to this new
theory, natural history reveals the continuous emergence of novel
phenomena: new structures and new organisms with new causal powers.
Consciousness is yet one more emergent level in the natural
hierarchy. Many theologians and religious scholars believe that
this new paradigm may offer new insights into the nature of God and
God's relation to the world. This volume introduces readers to
emergence theory, outlines the major arguments in its defence, and
summarizes the most powerful objections against it. Written by
experts but suitable as an introductory text, these essays provide
the best available presentation of this exciting new field and its
potentially momentous implications.
Since the financial crisis of 2007 to 2009 the role of the company
in society, especially the role of publicly traded companies, has
acquired a political salience that was largely absent in the
decades before the crisis. This concern has been reflected in both
enhanced reporting requirements and in the latest version of the
Corporate Governance and Stewardship Codes applicable to the
largest companies. This books analyses these developments in full,
as well as the more fundamental proposals for reform of corporate
law that have been advanced outside official circles. The book also
examines the functions of the five core features of company
law-separate legal personality, limited liability, centralized
management, shareholder control, and transferability of shares. It
finally analyses the legal strategies available for moderating the
frictions that these core features nevertheless generate for those
providing the necessary inputs for a company's business. Written by
one of the field's foremost experts, Paul Davies' Introduction to
Company Law provides a comprehensive conceptual introduction to the
subject, giving readers a clear framework with which to navigate
the intricacies of company law.

It happened after leaving the Slade School of Art. Anthony Green
realised that Mary Cozens-Walker would be the subject of his life's
work. Anthony's Green art foregrounding his wife, Mary
Cozens-Walker has resulted in an impressive body of work. It
encompassed over 50 years of creative enterprise: paintings,
sculptures, and prints. Since 1988, Green has produced two to three
prints each year, many of which have featured at the Royal
Academy's Summer Exhibition. Anthony Green: Printed Pictures
features the University of Buckingham Collection which included
almost all of Green's prints to date. His extraordinarily colourful
palette has been faithfully reproduced, alongside captions for each
print, revealing new and specific information about their
background and production. Dr Paul Davis' fascinating introductory
essay draws on the recent interviews with Anthony Green, as well as
art critics' opinions, past and present, from the UK and beyond.
This report is an output of the fourth research track (Track 4) of
WERF's strategic asset management research program 'Asset
Management Communication and Implementation' (SAM1R06). Track 4
addressed 'remaining asset life', and had the overall objective of
contributing to the development of techniques, tools and methods
for estimating residual life of wastewater assets. Track 4 research
was planned to be undertaken in a staged manner, so as to provide a
stepwise development of concepts and protocols. To this end, the
research team has produced a synthesis of knowledge in relation to
"end of life" and "remaining asset life," which is the subject of
this report. Drawing on the literature and the knowledge-base of
the research team and industry partners, information is presented
on the range of factors that influence the life of the different
asset classes involved in the provision of wastewater services. A
taxonomy of asset life is also given, along with a critical review
of the conceptual linkages between risk, asset management and
remaining asset life. A review of techniques used to assess
remaining asset life is also included, as well as a detailed 'state
of the art' review of modeling tools and approaches. One of the key
questions to be addressed in this initial stage of the research was
the state of knowledge with respect to the estimation and
prediction of remaining asset life, and if there is the capacity to
translate between condition and performance data (e.g. the presence
of significant defects) and the residual life of an asset. In this
regard, this report builds on previous work undertaken by the
research team into protocols for condition and performance
assessments, as detailed in WERF (2007).
