What are the origins of the hostile environment for immigrants in Britain? Drawing on new archival material from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Ian Sanjay Patel retells Britain's recent history in an often shocking account of state racism that still resonates today. In a series of post-war immigration laws, Britain's colonial and Commonwealth citizens from the Caribbean, Asia and Africa were renamed immigrants. In the late 1960s, British officials drew upon an imperial vision of the world to contain what it saw as a vast immigration 'crisis' involving British citizens, passing legislation to block their entry. As a result, British citizenship itself was redefined along racial lines, fatally compromising the Commonwealth and exposing the limits of Britain's influence in world politics. Combining voices of so-called immigrants trying to make a home in Britain and the politicians, diplomats and commentators who were rethinking the nation, Ian Sanjay Patel excavates the reasons why Britain failed to create a post-imperial national identity. The reactions of the British state to post-war immigration reflected the shift in world politics from empires to decolonization. Despite a new international recognition of racial equality, Britain's colonial and Commonwealth citizens were subject to a new regime of immigration control based on race. From the Windrush generation who came to Britain from the Caribbean to the South Asians who were forced to migrate from East Africa, Britain was caught between attempting both to restrict the rights of its non-white colonial and Commonwealth citizens and redefine its imperial role in the world. Despite Britain's desire to join Europe, which eventually occurred in 1973, its post-imperial moment never arrived, subject to endless deferral and reinvention.

Pixar animator and Academy Award-nominated director Sanjay Patel (Sanjay's Super Team) brings to life Hinduism's most important gods and goddesses (and one sacred stone) in fun, full-color illustrations, each accompanied by a short, lively profile. The Little Book of Hindu Deities is chock-full of monsters, demons, noble warriors, and divine divas. Find out why Ganesha has an elephant's head (his father cut his off!); why Kali, the goddess of time, is known as the "Black One" (she's a bit goth); and what "Hare Krishna" really means. Several alternative fuels like hydrogen, CNG, LNG, producer gas, biogas, alcohols, vegetable oils etc. are being explored around the globe with a view to supplement fuels and reduce environmental pollution. The alcohol fuels could not be exploited on a large scale because the petroleum fuels were abundant, cheap and easy to produce. Several vegetable oils are being produced in the country. Among vegetable oils rice bran oil can be used as CI engine fuel. Rice bran oil and its ester have been used satisfactorily for partial replacement of the diesel fuel. Use of vegetable oil and ethanol blend gave satisfactory results. But ester of vegetable oil and ethanol has never been used before as fuel in CI engines. The concept of employing alcohol especially ethanol with ester of vegetable oils as a fuel in engines is totally new and revolutionary. This study helped to assess the feasibility of using blend of rice bran oil methyl ester and ethanol as fuel in a diesel engine.
Interventional cardiologists have quickly replaced bare metal stents with intravascular drug-eluting stents (DES) for treating and preventing restenosis, largely on the basis of empirical evidence that shows profound reduction in angiographic and clinical restenosis. A critical reassessment of the published evidence, however, suggests that the putative superiority of intravascular drug-eluting stents is founded on questionable premises, including overestimation of restenosis benefit, underestimation of the risk for stent thrombosis, overreliance on "soft" rather than "hard" outcomes and the attendant overestimation of cost-effectiveness. Because the long-term incremental risks, benefits, and costs of drug-eluting stents have not yet been optimally evaluated in a broad spectrum of patient and lesion cohorts, the rational role of these devices in clinical management warrants reappraisal. This book will provide a brief overview of the development of drug-eluting stents from the laboratory bench to their investigation in clinical trials and their clinical use.
There is growing interest in developing chemical and biochemical processes to obtain and modify biopolymers, and to other useful technical properties for their applications in different fields. The latest and most interesting example is chitin, it is mainly used for production of chitosan by a deacetylation reaction usually obtained in alkaline medium. Chitosan exhibits several favorable properties, such as biodegradability and biocompatibility. It also has mucoadhesive properties due to its positive charges at neutral pH that enable an ionic interaction with the negative charges of sialic acid residues of the mucus. Numerous studies have demonstrated that chitosan and its derivatives are effective and safe absorption enhancers to improve mucosal (nasal, peroral) delivery of hydrophilic macromolecules, such as peptides, proteins, and heparins. Chitosan has been developed for a variety of biomedical applications including wound dressings and drug delivery systems.
The usage of automobiles has been increasing expotentially which also increasing emission of pollutants like hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen and particulate matter greatly. These pollutants have negative impact on air quality, the environment and human health. The stringent regulations are in force across the globe to minimize it. Automotive Emissions and Its Control provides an up-to-date reference to academicians and professionals on emissions from SI and CI engines powered vehicles and its control technologies. In this book engine design, engine emissions, impact of emitted pollutants on environment, worldwide vehicle emission standards etc. are presented. The pollutant emission control technologies like improvement in engine design, fuel pretreatment, use of alternative fuels, fuel additives, exhaust treatment or better tuning of the combustion process etc. are discussed in the detail. The recent developments on exhaust aftertreatment such as cold start emission control, NSR, SCR and diesel particulate filters etc. are covered in the book. It also discuses three way catalytic converter based on noble metal for minimizing emissions with its limitations.
Heterobicyclic oxazolo pyrimidinone are important class of compounds. They may become promising candidates for exploiting more useful therapeutically active molecules. The compounds having oxazolo pyrimidinone moiety are associated with interesting wide spectrum biological activities, such as antibacterial, kinase inhibition, adenosine receptor antagonism, tumour growth inhibition and some show to inhibit the ability of ricin to inactivate the ribosomes etc. The intermediate azlactones are also useful precursors for the synthesis of amino acids, peptides, heterocycles, biosensors and antitumor or antimicrobial compounds. In the present study, it was proposed to synthesize lead molecules of oxazolo pyrimidinone skeleton, apt for binding to the target enzyme, bacterial MurB based on the rational approach and to study their docking simulations using ArgusLab 4.0.1 and AutoDock 4.2 softwares. The synthesized test compounds were then characterized by TLC, melting point determination, UV, IR, 1H-NMR and mass spectral studies and tested for their antibacterial activity and compare with the standard drug.
Coumarins are important class of compounds, isomeric to quinolones. They may become promising candidates for exploiting more useful therapeutically active molecules. DNA-gyrase has drawn much attention as selected target for finding potent anti-bacterial agents against multi-drug resistant strains such as methicillin-resistant Staphyloccus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), penicillin-resistant Streptococci pneumonia (PRSP). The objective of the present study was, to study the molecular docking simulations on 5,7-dihydroxy-4-methyl coumarin analogues as probable candidates for inhibiting DNA gyrase subunit-B of S.aureus. In the present study, Docking simulations were carried out on the reported inhibitors of DNA-gyrase subunit A and B using docking software. Based on it, Series of 5,7-dihydroxy-4-methylcoumarin analogues (PH-1 to PH-9) were designed, synthesized, characterized and evaluated for its anti-bacterial activity against S.aureus and E.coli. Out of the nine test compounds, compound PH-4 showed good anti-bacterial activity against S.aureus and E.coli than rest of other compounds.
Nearly 40% of new drug candidates exhibit low solubility in water, which leads to poor oral bioavailability, high intra- and inter-subject variability and lack of dose proportionality. Modification of the physicochemical properties, such as salt formation and particle size reduction of the compound may be one approach to improve the dissolution rate of the drug. However, these methods have their own limitations. In recent years, much attention has focused on lipid based formulations to improve the oral bioavailability of poorly water soluble drugs. In fact, the most popular approach is the incorporation of the drug compound into inert lipid vehicles such as oils, surfactant dispersions, self-emulsifying formulations, emulsions and liposomes with particular emphasis on self-microemulsifying drug delivery systems (SMEDDS).
