Despite success with treatment when diagnosed early, breast cancer
is still one of the most fatal forms of cancer for women. Imaging
diagnosis is still one of the most efficient ways to detect early
breast changes with mammography among the most used techniques.
However, there are other techniques that have emerged as
alternatives or even complementary tests in the early detection of
breast lesions (e.g., breast thermography and electrical impedance
tomography). Artificial intelligence can be used to optimize image
diagnosis, increasing the reliability of the reports and supporting
professionals who do not have enough knowledge or experience to
make good diagnoses. Biomedical Computing for Breast Cancer
Detection and Diagnosis is a collection of research that presents a
review of the physiology and anatomy of the breast; the dynamics of
breast cancer; principles of pattern recognition, artificial neural
networks, and computer graphics; and the breast imaging techniques
and computational methods to support and optimize the diagnosis.
While highlighting topics including mammograms, thermographic
imaging, and intelligent systems, this book is ideally designed for
medical oncologists, surgeons, biomedical engineers, medical
imaging professionals, cancer researchers, academicians, and
students in medicine, biomedicine, biomedical engineering, and
computer science.

Photoemission (also known as photoelectron) spectroscopy refers to
the process in which an electron is removed from a specimen after
the atomic absorption of a photon. The first evidence of this
phenomenon dates back to 1887 but it was not until 1905 that
Einstein offered an explanation of this effect, which is now
referred to as ""the photoelectric effect"". Quantitative Core
Level Photoelectron Spectroscopy: A Primer tackles the pragmatic
aspects of the photoemission process with the aim of introducing
the reader to the concepts and instrumentation that emerge from an
experimental approach. The basic elements implemented for the
technique are discussed and the geometry of the instrumentation is
explained. The book covers each of the features that have been
observed in the X-ray photoemission spectra and provides the tools
necessary for their understanding and correct identification.
Charging effects are covered in the penultimate chapter with the
final chapter bringing closure to the basic uses of the X-ray
photoemission process, as well as guiding the reader through some
of the most popular applications used in current research.

For nearly 150 years, William Lloyd Garrison, founder of the famed
antislavery newspaper The Liberator, has been represented by
scholars, educators, politicians and authors as the founder of the
American abolitionist movement. Yet the idea that Garrison was the
leader of a coherent movement was strongly contested during his
lifetime. Drawing on private letters, diaries, newspapers, novels,
memoirs, eulogies, late 19th century textbooks, poetry and
monuments, this study reveals the dramatic social and political
forces of the postwar period which transformed our perceptions of
Garrison, the abolitionist movement and the first histories of the
Civil War.
Brazil, like several countries in Africa, has become a major
destination for African American tourists seeking the cultural
roots of the black Atlantic diaspora. Drawing on over a decade of
ethnographic research as well as textual, visual, and archival
sources, Patricia de Santana Pinho investigates African American
roots tourism, a complex, poignant kind of travel that provides
profound personal and collective meaning for those searching for
black identity and heritage. It also provides, as Pinho's
interviews with Brazilian tour guides, state officials, and
Afro-Brazilian activists reveal, economic and political rewards
that support a structured industry. Pinho traces the origins of
roots tourism to the late 1970s, when groups of black
intellectuals, artists, and activists found themselves drawn
especially to Bahia, the state that in previous centuries had
absorbed the largest number of enslaved Africans. African Americans
have become frequent travelers across what Pinho calls the ""map of
Africanness"" that connects diasporic communities and stimulates
transnational solidarities while simultaneously exposing the
unevenness of the black diaspora. Roots tourism, Pinho finds, is a
fertile site to examine the tensions between racial and national
identities as well as the gendered dimensions of travel,
particularly when women are the major roots-seekers.
Markov networks and other probabilistic graphical modes have
recently received an upsurge in attention from Evolutionary
computation community, particularly in the area of Estimation of
distribution algorithms (EDAs). EDAs have arisen as one of the most
successful experiences in the application of machine learning
methods in optimization, mainly due to their efficiency to solve
complex real-world optimization problems and their suitability for
theoretical analysis. This book focuses on the different steps
involved in the conception, implementation and application of EDAs
that use Markov networks, and undirected models in general. It can
serve as a general introduction to EDAs but covers also an
important current void in the study of these algorithms by
explaining the specificities and benefits of modeling optimization
problems by means of undirected probabilistic models. All major
developments to date in the progressive introduction of Markov
networks based EDAs are reviewed in the book. Hot current research
trends and future perspectives in the enhancement and applicability
of EDAs are also covered. The contributions included in the book
address topics as relevant as the application of
probabilistic-based fitness models, the use of belief propagation
algorithms in EDAs and the application of Markov network based EDAs
to real-world optimization problems. The book should be of interest
to researchers and practitioners from areas such as optimization,
evolutionary computation, and machine learning.

This work addresses the multiple possibilities for using
cinnamon for applications in food science technology
and to help in the complimentary treatment and prevention of
diseases, with priority given to secondary metabolites produced by
this plant. Issues related to the functions of cinnamon and its
applications, as well as the biosynthetic pathways of production by
plants, are covered in depth. The link between food science and
technology and specific medicinal plants has not been explored
enough in the current literature, and this text looks to bridge
this gap in its extensive coverage of cinnamon. CINNAMON:Â A
Functional Food and Medicinal Plant provides readers with a
broad and diverse overview of the importance of secondary
metabolites produced by plants and the possibilities for innovative
biotechnological approaches that introduce new potential to a wide
range of industrial products. The application of cinnamon in
products across food science and its numerous health benefits are
outlined, including its use as a complimentary medicine for a
number of diseases. This book features the main cinnamon varieties
and production areas plus quality evaluation and bioactive compound
extraction methods. The multiple applications of spices in foods
are covered in depth, plus antioxidant activity and
inhibitory effects on bacteria and fungi. Beyond its use in
foods, readers will find chapters covering the antiviral effects of
cinnamon and its use for the treatment and prevention of diabetes
and other disorders. Also important is coverage on the safety
aspects of cinnamon and its extracts. To date no book has
exclusively covered the many uses of cinnamon and cinnamon extracts
in food and pharmaceutical applications. This much-needed work
provides a fully up to date and extensive overview for researchers
to examine the many uses of cinnamon across multiple products and
industries.      Â

An exploration of the captivating work and mystical outlook of the modern artist Remedios Varo, focusing on her years in Mexico City.
This publication offers a definitive look at the artistic practice of Remedios Varo (1908–1963) following her emigration from Spain to Mexico City in 1941. Her work from 1955 to 1963 made a lasting contribution to modern art and the legacy of Surrealism. In Remedios Varo: Science Fictions, fresh historical and material findings establish the integral relationship between Varo’s layered interests—in alchemy, architecture, magic, mysticism, philosophy, and science—and her beguiling technical approach to art making. Essays detail specific works’ complex stories and spectacular surfaces. An illustrated taxonomy of Varo’s artistic techniques, including automatic mark making as well as careful manipulation of materials and media, offers new insights into the artist’s craft. An illustrated inventory of a major portion of Varo’s library—published here for the first time—reveals the artist’s engagement with a wide range of subjects.
Stunning new photography of many of her artworks are presented within a dynamic geometric design inspired by the artist’s work. Situating Varo as a woman working in midcentury Mexico City and living among a tight-knit community of local and émigré artists, poets, and thinkers, the catalogue illuminates the complex worldview that shaped her search for individual and collective transcendence.
A volume in The Curriculum and Pedagogy Series Series Editor:

Fifty Key Figures in Latinx and Latin American Theatre is a
critical introduction to the most influential and innovative
theatre practitioners in the Americas, all of whom have been
pioneers in changing the field. The chosen artists work through
political, racial, gender, class, and geographical divides to
expand our understanding of Latin American and Latinx theatre while
at the same time offering a space to discuss contested
nationalities and histories. Each entry considers the artist's or
collective's body of work in its historical, cultural, and
political context and provides a brief biography and suggestions
for further reading. The volume covers artists from the present day
to the 1960s-the emergence of a modern theatre that was concerned
with Latinx and Latin American themes distancing themselves from an
European approach. A deep and enriching resource for the classroom
and individual study, this is the first book that any student of
Latinx and Latin American theatre should read.
The conscious mind defines human existence. Many consider the brain
as a computer, and they attempt to explain consciousness as
emerging at a critical, but unspecified, threshold level of complex
computation among neurons. The brain-as-computer model, however,
fails to account for phenomenal experience and portrays
consciousness as an impotent, after-the-fact epiphenomenon lacking
causal power. And the brain-as-computer concept precludes even the
remotest possibility of spirituality. As described throughout the
history of humankind, seemingly spiritual mental phenomena
including transcendent states, near-death and out-of-body
experiences, and past-life memories have in recent years been well
documented and treated scientifically. In addition, the
brain-as-computer approach has been challenged by advocates of
quantum brain biology, who are possibly able to explain,
scientifically, nonlocal, seemingly spiritual mental states.
Exploring Frontiers of the Mind-Brain Relationship argues against
the purely physical analysis of consciousness and for a balanced
psychobiological approach. This thought-provoking volume bridges
philosophy of mind with science of mind to look empirically at
transcendent phenomena, such as mystic states, near-death
experiences and past-life memories, that have confounded scientists
for decades. Representing disciplines ranging from philosophy and
history to neuroimaging and physics, and boasting a panel of expert
scientists and physicians, including Andrew Newberg, Peter Fenwick,
Stuart Hameroff, Mario Beauregard, Deepak Chopra, and Chris Clarke
the book rigorously follows several lines of inquiry into
mind-brain controversies, challenging readers to form their own
conclusions-or reconsider previous ones. Key coverage includes:
Objections to reductionistic materialism from the philosophical and
the scientific tradition. Phenomena and the mind-brain problem. The
neurobiological correlates of meditation and mindfulness. The
quantum soul, a view from physics. Clinical implications of
end-of-life experiences. Mediumistic experience and the mind-brain
relationship. Exploring Frontiers of the Mind-Brain Relationship is
essential reading for researchers and clinicians across many
disciplines, including cognitive psychology, personality and social
psychology, the neurosciences, neuropsychiatry, palliative care,
philosophy, and quantum physics. "This book ... brings together
some precious observations about the fundamental mystery of the
nature of consciousness ... It raises many questions that serve to
invite each of us to be more aware of the uncertainty of our
preconceptions about consciousness ... This book on the frontiers
of mind-body relationships is a scholarly embodiment of creative
and open-minded science." C. Robert Cloninger, MD Wallace Renard
Professor of Psychiatry, Genetics, and Psychology, Washington
University School of Medicine St. Louis MO
