Is There Progress in Economics? - Knowledge, Truth and the History of Economic Thought (Hardcover): Stephan Boehm, Christian... Is There Progress in Economics? - Knowledge, Truth and the History of Economic Thought (Hardcover)
Stephan Boehm, Christian Gehrke, Heinz D. Kurz, Richard Sturn
R4,114 Discovery Miles 41 140 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This thought-provoking book discusses the concept of progress in economics and investigates whether any advance has been made in its different spheres of research. The authors look back at the history, successes and failures of their respective fields and thoroughly examine the notion of progress from an epistemological and methodological perspective. The idea of progress is particularly significant as the authors regard it as an essentially contested concept which can be defined in many ways - theoretically or empirically; locally or globally; or as encouraging or impeding the existence of other research traditions. The authors discuss the idea that for progress to make any sense there must be an accumulation of knowledge built up over time rather than the replacement of ideas by each successive generation. Accordingly, they are not concerned with estimating the price of progress, reminiscing in the past, or assessing what has been lost. Instead they apply the complex mechanisms and machinery of the discipline to sub-fields such as normative economics, monetary economics, trade and location theory, Austrian economics and classical economics to critically assess whether progress has been made in these areas of research. Bringing together authoritative and wide-ranging contributions by leading scholars, this book will challenge and engage those interested in philosophy, economic methodology and the history of economic thought. It will also appeal to economists in general who are interested in the advancement of their profession.

R1,608 Discovery Miles 16 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Demographic change is one of the most crucial issues of our time. This book sheds light on the demographic implications companies face. Based on an integrated framework, the book investigates three important perspectives: An economic and social perspective helps organisations and managers better understand the basic parameters of demographic change and its influences on the labour market. A human resources and leadership perspective reveals how age management can help retain employees of different age groups as motivated and productive workforce members. An innovation and marketing perspective examines how companies can exploit the potentials that senior customers offer. A combination of research-driven and practice-oriented chapters makes this book a profound and an interesting read. It primarily addresses executives from various organisational fields, including HR, marketing, and management. Professional trainers, scholars and students of economy and business will also gain valuable insights."Dr. Guenter Pfeiffer, Chief Personnel Officer and member of the Executive Board, Swisscom Group"

"New approaches are required to restructuring, redeployment and age management that go beyond the typical instruments of part-time models and flexible retirement schemes."

"Dr. Guenter Pfeiffer, Chief Personnel Officer and member of the Executive Board, Swisscom Group"

"Recognising the business consequences of the demographic developments and taking these into consideration are imperative for the competitiveness of not only companies, but also entire economies."""

Austrian Economics: Tensions and New Directions (Hardcover, 1992 ed.): Bruce J. Caldwell, Stephan Boehm Austrian Economics: Tensions and New Directions (Hardcover, 1992 ed.)
Bruce J. Caldwell, Stephan Boehm
R4,400 Discovery Miles 44 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

When we first invited the group of distinguished scholars represented here to contribute to a new volume on Austrian economics, four themes were stressed: tensions, new directions, selectivity, and criticism. In this brief introduction we will explain why those themes were emphasized and thereby shed light on our intentions and aspirations for the volume. The subtitle "Tensions and New Directions" indicates clearly the intent of the volume desired. If we take the 1871 publication of Carl Menger's Principles of Economics (Grundsiitze der Volkswirthschaftslehre) as mark ing its birth, the Austrian tradition is now well over one hundred years old. The origins of the so-called "Austrian Revival" are more difficult to pinpoint precisely, but many would accept two decades as a reasonable estimate of its lifespan. In any case, since the mid-1970s several collections of articles written by Austrians have been published. The intent of these collections appeared to be to educate, persuade, and inspire various audiences. Uninformed readers needed to be told about the specifics of the Austrian position, to be shown how it differed from and improved upon its rivals. The initiated needed to be reassured that their commitment to a novel program was justified. As such, much of the recent Austrian literature has consisted either of exegetical accounts of the views of past figures, or of critical assessments of the positions of alternative research programs in economics from an Austrian perspective."

Since years, e-business research is subject of many conferences and publications. While researchers and practitioners often focus on e-business systems and applications, so far little attention has been given to the development of innovative and sustainable e-business models and solutions. This publication fills this gap by discussing the following key issues: What are challenges and opportunities for international e-business? What are the barriers and risks for companies implementing e-business models? How can they succeed in the long-term? In this context, this publication provides in-depth studies of consumer needs, cultural requirements as well as conditions of economic efficiency and successful implementation of e-business solutions. It is intended for e-business novices as well as advanced researchers and practitioners.
