2020 was the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, the most
significant global pandemic since the 'Spanish flu' in 1918-1919.
This book provides an analysis of the experience of the COVID-19
pandemic in a range of Commonwealth countries during 2020, covering
public health, political, economic and international aspects. The
Commonwealth, within which about one quarter of the world's
population resides, provides a cross-section of the global
experience of COVID-19. The Commonwealth ranges from highly
populated countries such as India and Nigeria, to small island
states and territories, encompassing also advanced industrialised
countries and developing countries. The grouping also extends into
many different regions of the world: Africa, South and Southeast
Asia, Europe, the Americas and Oceania. In the first year of the
pandemic, vaccines were still under development and national
response strategies chosen by Commonwealth countries were diverse,
spanning eradication, elimination, suppression and mitigation. The
chapters in this book show the ways in which governments from a
selection of Commonwealth countries responded to the multiple
dimensions of the crisis, pointing to the factors that led to
effective or less effective policies. This book originally appeared
as a special issue of The Round Table.

Have you ever felt frustrated talking to someone? Have you ever
been puzzled by the way someone communicates, or struggled to
understand what people really mean? Communication issues can be
amplified when communicating internationally with people who have
different norms and practices to our own, thereby causing issues to
escalate if they are left unresolved. Successful International
Communication is for anyone who communicates across cultures,
whether it be for social purposes, or for work, where you might be
using English to play your part in an international team. Perhaps
you are communicating virtually or maybe you are a globe-trotter.
Or you might be a language teacher or communications trainer
looking to help your learners become more reflective and effective
international communicators. Both theoretical and practical, this
book is filled with easy-to-relate-to anecdotes and discussions on
the use of English as a global language and the key issues of
intercultural communication, as well as exploring different
interpersonal skills such as relationship building and conflict
management skills. Throughout the book, there are a number of
critical incidents, discussion questions and other such tasks for
you (as the reader) to complete, which in the process, encourage
you to reflect on your own opinions, thoughts, experiences, and
possible prejudices, whilst promoting self-awareness. The book is
also packed full of useful tip sections summarising key points from
the practical units as a reminder of the steps to follow for
successful international communication.
The book provides an analysis of impacts of climate change on water
for agriculture, and the adaptation strategies in water management
to deal with these impacts. Chapters include an assessment at
global level, with details on impacts in various countries.
Adaptation measures including groundwater management, water
storage, small and large scale irrigation to support agriculture
and aquaculture are presented. Agricultural implications of sea
level rise, as a subsequent impact of climate change, are also
examined.
Tropical coastal deltas represent one of the most diverse and
rapidly changing biophysical regions in the developing world. These
deltas are home to large populated areas, are significant centres
of agricultural production and industrial development, and contain
fragile ecosystems that are now facing new threats as a result of
expected sea-level rises associated with global warming. Focusing
on the developing countries of Asia, Africa and South America,
chapters explore the diverse livelihoods of people in these areas
and the impact of land-water management on the environment. New
techniques and methodologies are explored in land and water
management to try and solve the conflicts between rice-based
agriculture, aquaculture, fisheries and the environment in tropical
delta regions. Illustrating how to protect tropical deltaic systems
in the face of serious future challenges, this will be essential
reading for students, researchers, policy makers and natural
resource managers in agriculture and aquaculture.
The cultivation of Chinese cymbidiums has a long history in China
dating back to more than a thousand years ago. Chinese cymbidiums
are commonly known as 'Lan' (兰) or 'Guo Lan' (国兰) in
China.Lan has a special appeal and meaning to the Chinese as it
symbolizes integrity, modesty and nobility. Confucius praised Lan
as the 'Gentleman of Noble Virtue' (君子之风) and 'King of
Fragrance' (王者之香). The love and appreciation for and
growing of orchids have, in fact, become an integral part of
Chinese culture known as the 'Lan Culture'.The book starts with the
history of Lan and its association with Chinese culture and
traditional customs, literature and the arts. This is followed by a
description of the biology of Lan and cultivation practices of past
and present. Finally, the prospects and future of Lan are presented
and discussed.
A formal approach to anime rethinks globalization and
transnationality under neoliberalism Anime has become synonymous
with Japanese culture, but its global reach raises a perplexing
question-what happens when anime is produced outside of Japan? Who
actually makes anime, and how can this help us rethink notions of
cultural production? In Anime's Identity, Stevie Suan examines how
anime's recognizable media-form-no matter where it is
produced-reflects the problematics of globalization. The result is
an incisive look at not only anime but also the tensions of
transnationality. Far from valorizing the individualistic
"originality" so often touted in national creative industries,
anime reveals an alternate type of creativity based in repetition
and variation. In exploring this alternative creativity and its
accompanying aesthetics, Suan examines anime from fresh angles,
including considerations of how anime operates like a brand of
media, the intricacies of anime production occurring across
national borders, inquiries into the selfhood involved in anime's
character acting, and analyses of various anime works that present
differing modes of transnationality. Anime's Identity deftly merges
theories from media studies and performance studies, introducing
innovative formal concepts that connect anime to questions of
dislocation on a global scale, creating a transformative new lens
for analyzing popular media.

The silver based products (SBPs) have been used as an antibacterial
agent in medical, pharmacy and industry. Each kind of chemical
compound in drug or food could have certain interactions with both
target and non-target fluids and organs in human body.
Consequently, some changes occur in SBPs framework which cause
chemical changes in human body fluids and also in their own
structures. In this book, Zeolites A, Zeolites Y, clinoptilolite,
bentonite and kaolinite were applied as a carrier material to
attach antibacterial agents of silver ion(SBPs). The samples were
analyzed by EDX and FTIR spectroscopy. The effects of SBP on
simulated body fluid (SBF) and simulated gastric fluid (SGF) were
studied in different concentrations. The antibacterial activity of
SBPs and their effect on SBFs and SGFs fluids are investigated by
Kirby-Bauer method against Escherichia coli. Considerable
structural changes were observed in the framework of SBPs and SGF.
This study examines a type of Tibetan Buddhist vocal music,
dbyangs, with specific emphasis on phet singing in chod dbyangs of
Kagyu sect. Chapter I outlines the scope of the study, overview of
few previous related studies, goal of the study and research
methods. Chapter II introduces the general philosophy of Tibetan
Buddhism. General discussion about the origin, occasions, theory
and musical characteristics of dbyangs appear in chapter III.
Chapter IV provides an overview of chod practice regarding its
origin, philosophy, functions, texts, and meaning of phet. Chapter
V analyzes the musical attributes of phet based on the selected
criteria in each example. It also compares the musical patterns and
features among the three samples. Chapter VI looks at the aspects
that construct the musical phenomena of phet and their similarities
and differences among the three samples. As a conclusion, Chapter
VII intends to show the connection between music and human
perception, cognition and motivation. There is no pre-set tune or
musical composition for chod dbyangs, including phet singing. This
study aims to understand the musical phenomena of phet and the
factors that shape it.

School Leadership practice in Malaysia is keeping apace with
contemporary recommendations that school principals adopt a more
democratic and transformational leadership as a way to promote
higher levels of school performance and greater teachers' job
satisfaction. These principals generally upheld participatory and
collaborative management, relations-oriented and established
trusting relationship with teachers. They too possessed the
attributes of transformational leadership, such as individualized
consideration, idealized influence and intellectual stimulation.
Through their communicative virtue and ability to shed their status
and back away from power hierarchies, these transformational
democratic leaders were able to empower their teachers and forge a
more dispersed and democratic form of leadership in schools. As
teachers became more highly educated, they expected greater
autonomy;though some teachers not in the administrative team were
generally concern about their instructional autonomy and had no
interest over the school overall policy.
