This is a unique and powerful presentation of the teachings of
Tibetan Buddhism on the five elements: earth, water, air, fire, and
space. In their gross and subtle forms, these elements combine to
make up the infinite illusory display of phenomenal existence.
Through teachings, stories, and his distinctive use of language,
Thinley Norbu Rinpoche relates how the energies of the elements
manifest within our everyday world, in individual behavior and
group traditions, relationships and solitude, medicine and art. He
explains their links to the five Buddha families and their
respective Wisdom Dakinis, and shows how each element relates to
our senses, temperament, passions, habits, and karmic potentials.
This magic dance of the elements, he concludes, can be transformed
through meditation practice and cultivating the calm, vast, and
playful state of consciousness that he calls "playmind."
This title is a response to the Buddhism chapter of Pope John Paul
II's book 'Crossing the Threshold of Hope'. In 1993, an Italian
reporter asked Pope John Paul II to speak on the subject of
Buddhism, especially its doctrine of salvation and its relationship
to Christianity. The Pope's answer, which was published as part of
a book the following year, grossly misrepresents the Buddhist
worldview, claims respected Buddhist teacher Thinley Norbu.
'Welcoming Flowers' is Norbu's attempt to identify and correct such
errors.
In "The Small Golden Key," Thinley Norbu Rinpoche explains in
simple, concise language the important ideas and practices of
Buddhism, with special attention to the Vajrayana teachings of
Tibetan Buddhism. He discusses the origins of Buddhism in India and
its spread to Tibet; the important lineages of Tibetan Buddhism,
with emphasis on the Nyingma school; the differences between the
Hinayana, Mahayana, and Vajrayana teachings; the outstanding
features of the Mahayana; and some of the special qualities and
practices of the Vajrayana.
In a very intimate, informal setting, Thinley Norbu, one of the most articulate voices of Tibetan Buddhism, gives a no-holds-barred explanation of the challenges Westerners face in authentically learning, practicing, and transmitting Buddhism, highlighting both the obstacles and the way to navigate beyond them.
In colorful, bustling Boudhanath--Buddhism's great pilgrimage site in Nepal--a group of Westerners gathered to speak with Kyabje Thinley Norbu Rinpoche about topics both mundane and sublime. This is the record of their lively dialogue. First published in an exclusive private edition some forty years ago, "Echoes" has now returned to reach a larger and broader audience who will be eager to share in this intimate exchange of questions and answers with a revered teacher.
