Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
Screen documentary has experienced a marked rise in visibility and
popularity in recent years. What are the reasons for the so-called
'boom' in documentaries at the cinema? How has television
documentary met the challenge of new formats? And how do audiences
engage with documentaries on screen? Watching the world extends the
reach of documentary studies by investigating recent instances of
screen documentary and the uses made of them by audiences. The book
focuses on the interfaces between textual mechanisms, promotional
tactics, and audiences' viewing strategies. Key topics of inquiry
are: film and televisual form, truth claims and issues of trust,
the pleasures, politics and the ethics of documentary. Case studies
include Capturing the Friedmans, Etre et Avoir, Paradise Lost,
Touching the Void, and wildlife documentaries on television. This
compelling and accessible book will be of interest to both students
and fans of documentary. -- .
A fascinating multi-dimensional investigation of popular film as a
commercial, cultural and social phenomenon, focusing on well known
and controversial films, and on important - and marketable - issues
such as sex and violence. Traces the circulation in Britain of
three Hollywood films - Basic Instinct, Bram Stoker's Dracula and
Natural Born Killers - from marketing and critical reception to
consumption. Draws on economic and discursive contexts and original
audience research to trace how meanings, pleasures and uses are
derived from popular film. First in the field to look at how
Hollywood blockbusters are marketed in Britain. Combining detailed
case studies with a clear and up-to-date overview of audience
research and the political economy of contemporary cinema this will
be essential reading for students of film, popular culture and the
media. -- .

Kaurismaki to be published in English, it offers a range of voices
responding to his politically and aesthetically compelling cinema.

This special issue asks what role society can play in the
regulation of transnational risks, as an alternative to or at least
significant addition to reliance on state regulatory activity and
the myth of the self-regulatory capacity of markets (Stiglitz,
2001, p. xiii). How can a social sphere contribute to the
prevention and management of risks, often transnational in nature,
posed by economic activity? Leading socio-legal scholars explore
whether and how the idea of harnessing the regulatory capacity of a
social sphere provides a new analytical lens that can provide fresh
insights into transnational risk regulation, and whether this idea
helps to identify innovative approaches to regulating transnational
risks.

in a virtual format. The 9 full papers and 6 short papers presented

Now more than ever, the idea of Europe as grounded in a shared
cultural heritage cannot be taken for granted. For all its
diversity, complexity and internal tensions, Europe remains a
powerful economic and political superstate. But it is one in
crisis, where the postwar social democratic consensus has
collapsed, the failings of neoliberalism have led to widespread
austerity, and extremism, xenophobia and racism are on the rise.
This collection of original essays considers filmmakers'
engagements with pressing issues of the moment. Taking a long view
of the crisis and considering geopolitical changes that took place
towards the end of the 20th century, this book examines European
cinema's response to the economic, political and social crises that
afflict Europe in the present.
From a boom in theatrical features to footage posted on websites
such as "YouTube" and "Google Video," the early years of the 21st
century have witnessed significant changes in the technological,
commercial, aesthetic, political, and social dimensions of
documentaries on film, television and the web. . .
In response to these rapid developments, this book rethinks the
notion of documentary, in terms of theory, practice and object/s of
study. Drawing together 26 original essays from scholars and
practitioners, it critically assesses ideas and constructions of
documentary and, where necessary, proposes new tools and arguments
with which to examine this complex and shifting terrain. . .
Covering a range of media output, the book is divided into four
sections: . . . Critical perspectives on documentary forms and
concepts . The changing faces of documentary production.
Contemporary documentary: borders, neighbours and disputed
territories . Digital and online documentaries: opportunities and
limitations . . . "Rethinking Documentary" is valuable reading for
scholars and students working in documentary theory and practice,
film studies, and media studies.. .
