Emil Franzels Lebensweg ist gekennzeichnet von Br chen und Wandlungen. Geboren im Kaiserreich sterreich, Abitur und Studium nach dem 1. Weltkrieg in der Ersten Tschechoslowakischen Republik, Aufstieg zu einem bekannten, deutschsprachigen, sozialdemokratischen Redakteur und politischen Intellektuellen. 1937 dann Austritt aus der Deutschen Sozialdemokratischen Partei der Tschechoslowakei - der erste selbstbestimmte Bruch in der Biografie. Nach der Zerschlagung der 'Rest-Tschechei' und einer kurzfristigen Mitgliedschaft in der Sudetendeutschen Partei wird Franzel NSDAP-Anw rter und beginnt kurz nach Kriegsausbruch eine Umschulung zum Bibliothekar. Sp ter Dienst bei der Schutzpolizei, wo er nach dem normalen Polizeidienst in der Schreibstube bald wieder als Redakteur und Geschichtslehrer arbeitet. Bei Kriegsende wird Franzel noch beim Abzug aus Prag schwer verletzt und ger t in tschechoslowakische Kriegsgefangenschaft. Nach einigen Monaten im Lazarett und in Kriegsgefangenschaft wird Emil Franzel im M rz 1946 nach Bayern abgeschoben, wo er seine Familie wiedertrifft. In der Nachkriegszeit entwickelt sich Franzel zu einem der f hrenden Publizisten der Abendlandbewegung, der sich auch f r die Ackermann-Gemeinde, die Gesinnungsgemeinschaft sudetendeutscher Katholiken, stark engagiert. Beruflich gelingt ihm der Einstieg als Bibliothekar in der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek. Die vorliegende Studie skizziert den facettenreichen Lebensweg von Emil Franzel und analysiert seine Wandlung vom Sozialdemokraten zum Konservativen. Neben der Autobiografie und zahlreichen Artikeln und Aufs tzen von Franzel st tzt sich diese Arbeit auch auf die Recherche in mehreren Archiven.
