Over the past few years, and certainly since the publication of the
"Stern Report", there has been increasing recognition that climate
change is not only an environmental crisis, but one with important
social and economic dimensions. There is now a growing need for
multi-disciplinary research and for the science of climate change
to be usefully translated for policy-makers.Until very recently,
scientific and policy emphasis on climate change has focused almost
exclusively on mitigation efforts: mechanisms and regulations to
reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The success of such efforts to
date is debatable. In fact, the impact of ever more stringent
emission control programmes could potentially have enormous social
consequences. Little effort has been expended on the exploration of
a systematic evaluation of climate stabilization benefits or the
costs of adapting to a changed climate, let alone attempting to
integrate different approaches. There is an increasing recognition
that the key actors in the climate crisis also need to be preparing
for change that is unavoidable. This has resulted in a greater
consideration of vulnerability and adaptation. The book, based on
the research programme "Vulnerability, Adaptation and Mitigation"
(VAM) which ran from 2004 to 2010, funded by the Netherlands
Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), presents a cluster of
case studies of industries, communities and institutions which each
show how vulnerability, adaptation and mitigation analyses can be
integrated using social behavioural sciences. Each chapter makes
specific recommendations for the studied industry sector, community
or institution, analyses the latest research developments of the
field and identifies priorities for future research. The book
argues that the inherent complexity of climate change will
ultimately require a much more integrated response both
scientifically - to better understand multiple causes and impacts -
as well as at the scientific/policy interface, where new forms of
engagement between scientists, policy-makers and wider stakeholder
groups can make a valuable contribution to more informed climate
policy and practice. The book is particularly timely as the
scientific research and policy debate is shifting from one of
problem-framing to new agendas that are much more concerned with
implementation, the improvement of assessment methodologies from a
multi-disciplinary perspective, and the reframing of current
scientific understanding towards mitigation, adaptation and
vulnerability. A critical element in responding to the climate
change challenge will be to ensure the translation of these new
scientific insights into innovative policy and practice "on the
ground". This book provides some fundamental elements to answer
this need. The Social and Behavioural Aspects of Climate Change:
Linking Vulnerability, Adaptation and Mitigation will be essential
reading for social science researchers and policy managers in the
area of climate change, as well as for those who want to know what
the social and behavioural sciences can contribute toward coping
with climate hazards. NGOs, law firms and businesses in the energy
sector or other climate related fields will also find the book of
great value.
Since the publication of the first edition, important developments
have emerged in modern mushroom biology and world mushroom
production and products. The relationship of mushrooms with human
welfare and the environment, medicinal properties of mushrooms, and
the global marketing value of mushrooms and their products have all
garnered great attention, identifying the need for an updated,
authoritative reference. Mushrooms: Cultivation, Nutritional Value,
Medicinal Effect, and Environmental Impact, Second Edition presents
the latest cultivation and biotechnological advances that
contribute to the modernization of mushroom farming and the
mushroom industry. It describes the individual steps of the complex
mushroom cultivation process, along with comprehensive coverage of
mushroom breeding, efficient cultivation practices, nutritional
value, medicinal utility, and environmental impact. Maintaining the
format, organization, and focus of the previous edition, this
thoroughly revised edition includes the most recent research
findings and many new references. It features new chapters on
medicinal mushrooms and the effects of pests and diseases on
mushroom cultivation. There are also updated chapters on specific
edible mushrooms, and an expanded chapter on technology and
mushrooms. Rather than providing an encyclopedic review, this book
emphasizes worldwide trends and developments in mushroom biology
from an international perspective. It takes an interdisciplinary
approach that will appeal to industrial and medical mycologists,
mushroom growers, botanists, plant pathologists, and professionals
and scientists in related fields. This book illustrates that
mushroom cultivation has and will continue to have a positive
global impact on long-term food nutrition, health care,
environmental conservation and regeneration, and economic and
social change.
Travel, Collecting, and Museums of Asian Art in Nineteenth-Century
Paris examines a history of contact between modern Europe and East
Asia through three collectors: Henri Cernuschi, Emile Guimet, and
Edmond de Goncourt. Drawing on a wealth of material including
European travelogues of the East and Asian reports of the West,
Ting Chang explores the politics of mobility and cross-cultural
encounter in the nineteenth century. This book takes a new approach
to museum studies and institutional critique by highlighting what
is missing from the existing scholarship -- the foreign labors,
social relations, and somatic experiences of travel that are
constitutive of museums yet left out of their histories. The author
explores how global trade and monetary theory shaped Cernuschi's
collection of archaic Chinese bronze. Exchange systems, both
material and immaterial, determined Guimet's museum of religious
objects and Goncourt's private collection of Asian art. Bronze,
porcelain, and prints articulated the shifting relations and
frameworks of understanding between France, Japan, and China in a
time of profound transformation. Travel, Collecting, and Museums of
Asian Art in Nineteenth-Century Paris thus looks at what Asian art
was imagined to do for Europe. This book will be of interest to
scholars and students interested in art history, travel imagery,
museum studies, cross-cultural encounters, and modern transnational
histories.

The chapters in this edited book are written by some authors who
have presented very high quality papers at the 2015 International
Symposium of Next-Generation Electronics (ISNE 2015) held in
Taipei, Taiwan. The ISNE 2015 was intended to provide a common
forum for researchers, scientists, engineers, and practitioners
throughout the world to present their latest research findings,
ideas, developments, and applications in the general areas of
electron devices, integrated circuits, and microelectronic systems
and technologies. The scope of the conference includes the
following topics: A. Green Electronics B. Microelectronic Circuits
and Systems C. Integrated Circuits and Packaging Technologies D.
Computer and Communication Engineering E. Electron Devices F.
Optoelectronic and Semiconductor Technologies The technical program
consisted of 4 plenary talks, 23 invited talks, and more than 250
contributed oral and poster presentations. Plenary speakers were
recognized experts in their fields, and their talks focused on
leading-edge technologies including: "The Future Lithographic
Technology for Semiconductor Fabrication" by Dr. Alek C. Chen, Asia
ASML, Taiwan. "Detection of Single Traps and Characterization of
Individual Traps: Beginning of Atomistic Reliability Physics" by
Prof. Toshiaki Tsuchiya, Shimane University, Japan. "The Art and
Science of Packaging High-Coupling Photonics Devices and Modules",
by Prof. Wood-Hi Cheng, National Chung-Hsing University, Taiwan.
"Prospect and Outlook of Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Protection
in Emerging Technologies", by Prof. Juin J. Liou, University of
Central Florida, USA. After a rigorous review process, the ISNE
2015 technical program committee has selected 10 outstanding
presentations and invited the authors to prepare extended chapters
for inclusion in this edited book. Of the 10 chapters, five are
focused on the subject of electronic devices, and the other covers
the circuit designs for various applications. The authors are
working at the academia in Austria, United States, Korea, and
Taiwan. The guest editors would like to take this opportunity to
express our sincere gratitude to all the members of the ISNE 2015
technical program committees for reviewing the papers and selecting
the manuscripts for the edited book. We also thank all the authors
for their valuable and excellent contributions to the book.

The idea to write this book was born during our visit to a mushroom
farm house at Bunda College of Agriculture, University of Malawi,
Lilongwe, Malawi, and also during our discussions with several
beginners of mushroom farming activities in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
and other countries in Africa. The visits were a part of a fact
finding mission for a UNDP/UNOPS-funded Regional Project for Africa
on Promoting Sustainable Development in Africa from Africa's
biodiversity, which was based at the University of Namibia, and
whose Founding Director was the second author of the book, who was
then also a Founding UNESCO/UNU Chair for Africa, based in Namibia.
The First Edition of the book was a product of a document compiled
by Prof. S. T. Chang and Prof. K. E. Mshigeni in October 2000,
within the broad umbrella of the UNDP/UNOPS Project referred to
above. The objective of the First Edition of the book was to enable
beginners of mushroom farming activities in Africa to have some
basic understanding of mushroom biology and mushroom farming
technologies. The current book updates the technologies involved,
showthe great advances recently made in mushrooms and human health.
