This book deals with the use of aluminium for structural and non-structural applications and provides an introduction to designing structures made from aluminium or aluminium alloy elements. It comprises a ready reference to the material properties and behaviour of aluminium, and its use in structural design. In the context of information about the material itself, fabrication, structural design and corrosion, structural analysis, serviceability, element design and fatigue the author considers the strengths of designing with aluminium alloy members and how any weaknesses can be overcome. Reference is made throughout to EN 1999, Eurocode 9, and its design methods are discussed and illustrated. With most of its structural strength properties close to steel and with consideration for the special properties of aluminium alloys, there is considerable scope to make better use of this material in construction. Many years of working with aluminium have provided the author with the knowledge to avoid pitfalls and problems in design, fabrication and protection of structures, thus avoiding costly remedial work.

Scholars concerned with editing text, principally Germanists and musicologists, have placed a central editorial concept, that of textual criticism, centre-stage. In the course of the past decades, a development has taken place in this area, combined with new thoughts, but also with constant irritations. Liquid markets generate hundreds or thousands of ticks (the minimum change in price a security can have, either up or down) every business day. Data vendors such as Reuters transmit more than 275,000 prices per day for foreign exchange spot rates alone. Thus, high-frequency data can be a fundamental object of study, as traders make decisions by observing high-frequency or tick-by-tick data. Yet most studies published in financial literature deal with low frequency, regularly spaced data. For a variety of reasons, high-frequency data are becoming a way for understanding market microstructure. This book discusses the best mathematical models and tools for dealing with such vast amounts of data.

Die eindrucklichen Er folge der molekularen Quantenmechanik und ihr immenser praktischer Wert lassen es vor allem fur den experimentell arbeitenden Naturwissenschaftler wunschens wert erscheinen, die Grundlagen der Quantenchemie auch in den Einzelheiten tie fer zu verstehen. Die vorliegende Darstellung geht bewusst neue Wege und versucht, durch eine zeitgerechte Einfuhrung in die molekulare Quantenmechanik zu eigenem Weiter denken anzuregen. Dass sich die Quantentheorie in den letzten 30 Jahren wesent lich weiterentwickelt hat und dass wir heute manches besser verstehen koennen, als es den Pionieren der Quantenmechanik moeglich war, sollte sich nach unserer Meinung endlich auch in den Lehrbuchern niederschlagen. Nach Darstellungsart, Aufbau und Stoffauswahl richtet sich diese Einfuh rung in erster Linie an Studierende der Chemie und anderer Naturwissenschaften. Das Buch entspringt einer einsernestrigen Einfuhrungsvorlesung von vier Wochen stunden, welche seit etwa 15 Jahren an der ETH Zurich fur Chemiker im dritten Studiensemester gelesen wurde. Die molekulare Quantenmechanik ist heute ein sehr umfangreiches Gebiet, welches sich in einem Buch dieses Umfangs nicht darlegen lasst. Aus diesem Grunde war eine Beschrankung auf die chemisch wichtigen Grund lagen geboten, auf denen dann die Theorie der chemischen Bindung, die Molekul spektroskopie und die statistische Thermodynamik entwickelt werden koennen.

Die Intentionen des vorliegenden zweiten Bandes sind dabei die gleichen, die schon bei der Abfassung des erst en Pate standen: Grundlagen der schlieBenden Stati stik sollen in einer Breite vermittelt werden, die einen Einstieg in Monographien iiber Spezialgebiete bzw. in die Originalliteratur erlauben. Hervorgehoben werden deshalb iibergreifende, in der Statistik immer wiederkehrende Gesichtspunkte und SchluBweisen. Diese werden jeweils in dem einfachen, aber wichtigen Rahmen un abhangiger, metrisch skalierter Daten diskutiert. Die unter einer derartigen Ver teilungsannahme erzielten Resultate waren zumeist Vorbilder fUr solche, die spater unter allgemeineren Voraussetzungen bewiesen wurden. Nach Meinung der Autoren sollte dieser grundlegende Teil der Statistik daher als zusammenhangendes Sockel wissen in Buchform angeboten werden. Die Notwendigkeit hierfiir ist in den letzten Jahren auch aus anderen Griinden gewachsen. Die in allen Bereichen der Universitat spiirbar werdenden Bemiihungen zur Verkiirzung von Studienzeiten lassen namlich kaum noch einen Spielraum fiir vier-oder fiinfsemestrige Vorlesungszyklen, auf die bisher die Ausbildung in der Stochastik vielerorts aufbaute.
