Viral Language - Analysing the Covid-19 Pandemic in Public Discourse: Luke C. Collins, Veronika Koller Viral Language - Analysing the Covid-19 Pandemic in Public Discourse
Luke C. Collins, Veronika Koller
R4,624 Discovery Miles 46 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The first book to present original research into language aspects of the Covid-19 pandemic for a student audience but with a built-in shelf life as it also functions as an introduction to quantitative and qualitative methods of discourse analysis. Great interest in linguistics for systematic analysis of relatable global events but also significant demand for guides to research methods. Unlike existing titles, the authors cover a wide range of methods, draw on a wide range of data and also include a practical focus on how the research findings can be translated into practice.

The Language of Gender-Based Separatism - A Comparative Analysis: Veronika Koller, Alexandra Krendel, Jessica Aiston The Language of Gender-Based Separatism - A Comparative Analysis

R589 Discovery Miles 5 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This Element shows how two social movements, lesbian separatism and Men Going Their Own Way (MGTOW), reflect the changing and complex (anti-)feminist ideologies of their time. The authors outline the historical and political background of those discourses and how they are influencing contemporary gender relations. The materials analysed comprise ten manifestos, which are examined with a combination of data-led discourse analysis and theory-led argumentation analysis. The manifestos are similar in that both sets of authors construct homogenous in-groups and out-groups as well as dichotomies between them. There are some differences though in how this is linguistically realised and who is classified as an out-group. Both groups cast social actors in particular roles and establish ethical norms, but strategic planning and utopias are more prominent among lesbian separatists. Freedom, advantage and authority are central in each group's argumentation, but lesbian separatists also stress humanitarianism while MGTOW focus on financial matters.

Handbook of Communication in the Public Sphere (Hardcover): Ruth Wodak, Veronika Koller Handbook of Communication in the Public Sphere (Hardcover)
Ruth Wodak, Veronika Koller
R8,537 Discovery Miles 85 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As you are reading this, you are finding yourself in the ubiquitous public sphere that is the Web. Ubiquitous, and yet not universally accessible. This volume addresses this dilemma of the public sphere, which is by definition open to everyone but in practice often excludes particular groups of people in particular societies at particular points in time. The guiding questions for this collection of articles are therefore: Who has access to the public sphere? How is this access enabled or disabled? Under what conditions is it granted or withheld, and by whom? We regard the public sphere as the nodal point for the discourses of business, politics and media, and this basic assumption is also s reflected in the structure of the volume. Each of these three macro-topics comprises chapters by international scholars from a variety of disciplines and research traditions who each combine up-to-date overviews of the relevant literature with their own cutting-edge research into aspects of different public spheres such as corporate promotional communication, political rhetoric or genre features of electronic mass media. The broad scope of the volume is perhaps best reflected in a comprehensive discussion of communication technologies ranging from conventional spoken and written formats such as company brochures, political speeches and TV shows to emerging ones like customer chat forums, political blogs and text messaging. Due to the books' wide scope, its interdisciplinary approach and its clear structure, we are sure that whether you work in communication and media studies, linguistics, political science, sociology or marketing, you will find this handbook an invaluable guide offering state-of-the -art literature reviews and exciting new research in your field and adjacent areas.

Lesbian Discourses - Images of a Community (Paperback): Veronika Koller Lesbian Discourses - Images of a Community (Paperback)
Veronika Koller
R1,014 Discovery Miles 10 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Lesbian Discourses is the first book-length treatment of lesbian text and discourse. It looks at what changing images of community American and British lesbian authors have communicated since 1970, how this change can be traced in texts such as pamphlets, magazines and blogs, and why this change has taken place. At the heart of the book is a detailed linguistic analysis, which is embedded in a discussion of the relevant socio-political contexts and discourse practices, and supplemented by interview data. The book can more generally be read as an example of how to do textual analysis in social research, in particular how to engage in the discourse-historical and socio-cognitive study of collective identity. Despite its text-centered approach, the book avoids being overly technical and will therefore be of interest not only to postgraduate students and researchers in linguistics but also to those in anthropology, history and sociology, especially women's/gender studies.

Voices of Supporters - Populist parties, social media and the 2019 European elections: Veronika Koller, Natalia Borza,... Voices of Supporters - Populist parties, social media and the 2019 European elections

R2,800 Discovery Miles 28 000 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This book addresses an under-researched area within populism studies: the discourse of supporters of populist parties. Taking the 2019 European elections as their case study, the authors analyse how supporters in eleven different countries construct identities and voting motivations on social media. The individual chapters comprise a range of methods to investigate data from different social media platforms, defining populism as a political strategy and/or practice, realised in discourse, that is based on a dichotomy between “the people”, who are unified by their will, and an out-group whose actions are not in the interest of the people, with a leader safeguarding the interests of the people against the out-group. The book identifies what motivates people to vote for populist parties, what role national identities and values play in those motivations, and how the social media postings of populist parties are recontextualised in supporters’ comments to serve as a voting motivation.
