In general, several mathematical models can be designed in order to describe a biological or medical process and there is no unique criterion which model gives the best description. This book presents several of these models and shows applications of them to different biological and medical problems. The book shows that operations research expertise is necessary in respect to modeling, analysis and optimization of biosystems.

At the end of the nineteenth century Lyapunov and Poincare developed the so called qualitative theory of differential equations and introduced geometric- topological considerations which have led to the concept of dynamical systems. In its present abstract form this concept goes back to G.D. Birkhoff. This is also the starting point of Chapter 1 of this book in which uncontrolled and controlled time-continuous and time-discrete systems are investigated. Controlled dynamical systems could be considered as dynamical systems in the strong sense, if the controls were incorporated into the state space. We, however, adapt the conventional treatment of controlled systems as in control theory. We are mainly interested in the question of controllability of dynamical systems into equilibrium states. In the non-autonomous time-discrete case we also consider the problem of stabilization. We conclude with chaotic behavior of autonomous time discrete systems and actual real-world applications.

Focuses on the analysis, optimization and controllability of time-discrete dynamical systems and games under the aspect of stability, controllability and (for games) cooperative and non-cooperative treatment. The investigation of stability is based on Lyapunov's method which is generalized to non-autonomous systems. Optimization and controllability of dynamical systems is treated, among others, with the aid of mapping theorems such as implicit function theorem and inverse mapping theorem. Dynamical games are treated as cooperative and non-cooperative games and are used in order to deal with the problem of carbon dioxide reduction under economic aspects. The theoretical results are demonstrated by various applications.

The main concern of this book is the application of infinite moment theory to the problem of controllability of one-di- mensional vibrating systems (like strings and beams) and heating processes. Distributed as well as boundary control is considered. In the case of vibrating systems trigonometric moment pro- blems are to be investigated which is done on the basis of an abstract moment theory in Hilbert spaces. Equivalently, alsothe theory of linear operator equations on Hilbert spa- ces ( partly with unbounded operators) is applied to the problem of controllability and time-minimal controllability. In the case of heating processes exponential moment problems are to be dealt with which is done on the basis of an ab- stract moment theory in Banach spaces. Time-minimal control- lability is also treated with the aid of the theory of line- aroperator equations on Banach spaces. Some advanced knowledge in functional analyis and on partial differential equations is preassumed for a fluent reader of the book, but parts of it are also readable with basic ma- thematical knowledge (for instance, the finite-dimensional part of the introduction).

This volume contains the proceedings of the summer school "Modern Methods of Optimization," held at the Schlof3 Thurnau of the University of Bayreuth, October 1-6, 1990. Like other branches of applied mathematics the area of optimization is undergoing a rapid development since the beginning of the computer age. Optimizaiton methods are of increasing importance for both, science and industry. The aim of the summer school was to present state-of-the-art knowledge by inviting 12 specialists from Op timization (and related fields) to present their areas of activity in the form of survey talks. This volume contains 10 of these presentations in slightly extended form. Most lectures started from an undergraduate level and outlinad the developments up to the latest scientifique achievements. This enabled the audience, consisting of about 45 students and young researchers, to get an excellent overview of the latest trends in Optimization as w ll as a grasp of the breadth of its potential applications. Equally important to the success of the summer school was the "nonmeasurable" part of the activities inherent in such a summer school. Here the inspiring atmosphere of a place like Thurnau helped to establish numerous contacts between "teachers" and "students." The purpose of the Conference on Optimal Control of Partial Differential Equations was to bring together leading experts in this field and to exchange ideas and information about recent advances in control theory connected with partial differential equations. The papers collected in these Proceedings are mainly research papers in which new results are presented. Out of a broad spectrum of topics the problem of exact controllability played a central role, and also shape control was given some special attention. Nonlinear problems were mainly treated under the aspect of optimality whereas identification problems and also numerical aspects were considered only treated marginally.

In vector optimization one investigates optimization problems in an abstract setting which have a not necessarily real-valued objective function. This scientific discipline is closely related to multi-objective optimization and multi-criteria decision making. This book contains refereed contributions to the "International Conference on Vector Optimization" held at the Technical University of Darmstadt from August 4-7, 1986. This meeting was an interdisciplinary forum devoted to new results in the theory, to applications as well as to the solution of vector optimization problems which are relevant in practice. Because of the great variety of topics covered by the contributions, the 25 articles of this volume are organized in different sections: Historical retrospect, mathematical theory, goal setting and decision making, engineering applications, and related topics. The papers of the invited State-of-the-Art Tutorials given by Professors J.M. Borwein, H. Eschenauer, W. Stadler and P.L. Yu are also included.

Im landlaufigen Mathematikunterricht an Schulen und Hochschulen wird die Mathematik uberwiegend als eine geistige Disziplin vermittelt, in der es um die Klarheit und Stringenz des Denkens geht. Systematik und formale Eleganz der Darstellung stehen im Vorder grund. Dabei wird aber ignoriert, dass die Mathematik nicht allein aus sich heraus lebt, sondern in andere Bereiche unserer Kultur eingebunden ist. Ohne allzusehr zu ubertreiben, kann man sogar behaupten, dass sie ein integrativer Bestandteil unserer technologischen Welt ist und damit einen Einfluss ausubt, der weit uber ihr Selbstverstandnis hinausgeht. Mit der Sprache der Mathematik lassen sich auch nicht-mathematische Inhalte, zu mindest bis zu einem gewissen Grade ausdrucken. Man gelangt auf diese Weise oft zu Einsichten, die man ohne die Sprache der Mathematik nicht so klar und prazise aus drucken koennte. Man muss dabei allerdings auch beachten, dass mit der Umsetzung nicht mathematischer Sachverhalte in Mathematik eine starke Vereinfachung einhergeht als Preis fur die mathematische Abstraktion. Diese Vereinfachung muss bei der Interpretation der durch Mathematik gewonnenen Einsichten berucksichtigt werden. Der Zweck dieses Buches besteht darin, die soeben skizzierte Rolle der Mathematik ins Bewusstsein der Mathematiker zu bringen. Danken moechte ich Frau A. Dieses Buch ist dem lusammenhang zwischen Optimierung und Approximation gewid met. Es ist aus Vorlesungen hervorgegangen, die ich in den Jahren 1971 bis 1973 in Aachen und Darmstadt gehalten habe. Die Approximationstheorie hat sich zunachst als selbstandige Disziplin entwickelt, und auch der Optimierungstheorie lagen zu Beginn andere lielsetzungen als die Anwendung auf Approximationsprobleme zugrunde. Eine so1che Anwendung liegt aber sehr nahe, da man jedes Approximationsproblem auch als eine Optimierungsaufgabe auffassen kann. Bei der SUbsumption der Approximation unter das allgemeinere Konzept der Optimierung gehen zweifellos speziellere Eigenschaften des Approximationsproblerns verloren, so daB man nicht hoffen kann, alle approximationstheoretischen Fragen auf dem Wege tiber die Optimierung zu beantworten. Bei der Frage nach der Charakterisierung bester Approximierender und nach der Berech nung oder Abschatzung der Minimalabweichung hat sich jedoch der Einsatz der Opti mierungstheorie als sehr fruchtbar erwiesen. Auch bei der Frage nach der Existenz bester Approximierender liefert sie wertvolle Anhaltspunkte, weniger jedoch bei der Eindeu tigkeit, die in der Optimierung eine untergeordnete Rolle spielt. Nicht zuletzt lassen sich auch die mannigfachen Methoden zur Uisung von Optimierungsproblemen mit Gewinn auf Approximationsaufgaben anwenden, worauf allerdings in diesem Buch nicht einge gangen wird. Seine lielsetzung besteht vie1mehr darin zu zeigen, wie sich zahlreiche verschiedenartige Approximationsprobleme, die sich zum Teil aus direkten physikalisch-technischen Anwendungen und zum Teil aus anderen Fragestellungen der angewandten Mathematik ergeben, im Rahmen der Optimierungstheorie einheitlich behandeln lassen."

In neuerer Zeit sind so viele Lehrbucher uber Approximationstheorie erschienen, dass man nach der Berechtigung eines weiteren Buches fragen mag. Die Motivie rung ergab sich aus der Tatsache, dass sowohl in der Zeitschriftenliteratur uber Approximationstheorie als auch in den meisten Lehrbuchern relativ wenig auf die Anwendungen eingegangen wird. Es scheint in der heutigen Zeit eine gewisse Diskrepanz zu bestehen zwischen manchen viel von Mathematikern bearbeiteten Gebieten und den Gebieten, deren mathematische Untersuchung von seiten der Anwendungen aus dringend erwunscht ware. Die in physikalischen und technischen Fragestellungen auftretenden Approximationsprobleme sind, im Zug der fort schreitenden Entwicklung, so vielseitig und oft andersartig als in der bisher ge wohnlich betrachteten Theorie und dabei zugleich haufig mathematisch sehr interessant und tiefliegend, so dass sich hier ein ausserordentlich reiches Betati gungsfeld fur die mathematische Forschung ergibt. Sehr oft sind wir von Studen ten, Diplomanden, Doktoranden nach Themen aus der Approximationstheorie gefragt worden, die zugleich praktische Bedeutung haben, und da hieruber viel fach nicht genugend bekannt zu sein scheint, versucht dieses Buchlein, die Lucke zwischen Theorie und Anwendungen ein wenig aufzufullen. Da bei den Anwen dungen von den verschiedenen Approximationsarten die Tschebyscheffsche Approximation, kurz T. A., die anderen Typen an Bedeutung weit zu ubertreffen scheint, befasst sich das Buch vorwiegend mit der T. A., und zwar sowohl mit der Theorie als auch mit den Anwendungen. Der Brucke zwischen bei den dienen auch verschiedene Ubungsaufgaben am Schluss des Buches."
