The Gift of an Ordinary Day - A Mother's Memoir (Paperback, Large type / large print edition): Katrina Kenison The Gift of an Ordinary Day - A Mother's Memoir (Paperback, Large type / large print edition)
Katrina Kenison
R590 Discovery Miles 5 900 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The Gift of an Ordinary Day is an intimate memoir of a family in transition-boys becoming teenagers, careers ending and new ones opening up, an attempt to find a deeper sense of place, and a slower pace, in a small New England town. It is a story of mid-life longings and discoveries, of lessons learned in the search for home and a new sense of purpose, and the bittersweet intensity of life with teenagers--holding on, letting go.
Poised on the threshold between family life as she's always known it and her older son's departure for college, Kenison is surprised to find that the times she treasures most are the ordinary, unremarkable moments of everyday life, the very moments that she once took for granted, or rushed right through without noticing at all.
The relationships, hopes, and dreams that Kenison illuminates will touch women's hearts, and her words will inspire mothers everywhere as they try to make peace with the inevitable changes in store.

Adolescence! Just the word can cause us to both cringe and chuckle whether it is remembering our own rites of passage or dealing with the wonderful, weird and often totally exasperating sons, daughters, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, neighbors, siblings, students or just the kid behind us in line. This book is based on quotes from those same youngsters as they describe their fears, frustrations and dreams. You may be surprised to read that a thirteen-year-old boy would sometimes hug his parents' pillow when they are not at home or that a pre-teen wakes up and "breathes in the new day."As you read the thoughts of these young people, you will be presented with an opportunity to recall how you felt at that age in a variety of situations and to consider how those feelings may affect you today. It doesn't matter how or why this book came into your hands, you will never think of adolescents the same. As you reflect on the metamorphosis from child to young adult that we all go through, you will be reminded of the miracle that we do survive with a little love, patience and understanding from the people we meet on our journey.

Adolescence can be a difficult time, not only for teenagers, but also for their caretakers. Many parents, teachers, mentors, and guardians feel distanced from their children as they go through their teenaged years. Dr M.W. Johnson proposes most conflicts spawn from a lack of open communication. In this straightforward, practical, and sometimes humorous guide, Johnson examines the everyday language adults' use with their teens and points out how unmindful comments may harm relationships. He provides suggestions for how to hold more positive conversations and how to approach discussions on tough issues, such as body image and sexuality. By reminding us to take our teenagers seriously and become active listeners, the book provides the means necessary for more effective communication.

1. Changes in the Bodily Framework.-During this period the girl's skeleton not only grows remarkably in size, but is also the subject of well-marked alterations and development. Among the most evident changes are those which occur in the shape and inclination of the pelvis. During the years of childhood the female pelvis has a general resemblance to that of the male, but with the advent of puberty the vertical portion of the hip bones becomes expanded and altered in shape, it becomes more curved, and its inner surface looks less directly forward and more towards its fellow bone of the other side. The brim of the pelvis, which in the child is more or less heart-shaped, becomes a wide oval, and consequently the pelvic girdle gains considerably in width. The heads of the thigh bones not only actually, in consequence of growth, but also relatively, in consequence of change of shape in the pelvis, become more widely separated from each other than they are in childhood, and hence the gait and the manner of running alters greatly in the adult woman. At the same time the angle made by the junction of the spinal column with the back of the pelvis, known as the sacro-vertebral angle, becomes better marked, and this also contributes to the development of the characteristic female type.

Who says the teen years have to be terrible?

Although the word teenager has become synonymous with trouble, the evidence is clear: Adolescents have gotten a bad rap--and this according to a landmark eight-year study of 4,000 teens from twenty-five states. In "The Good Teen," acclaimed researcher Richard M. Lerner sets the record straight. The book:
- Explores the academic origins of "the troubled teen," dismantling old myths and redefining normal adolescence
- Presents the five characteristics of teen behavior that are proven to fuel positive development--Competence, Confidence, Connection, Character, and Caring--and specific ways parents can foster them
- Envisions our children as resources to be developed, not problems to be fixed
- Clearly shows parents what to do when things really go wrong--all teens, no matter how troubled they seem, can be helped
- Encourages new thinking, new public policies, and new programs that focus on the strengths of teens
"There is no one in America today who understands teenagers better than Richard Lerner." --William Damon, author of "The Moral Child," professor
of education, and director of the Stanford Center on Adolescence, Stanford University

Parenting adolescents is one of the most challenging and hardest jobs around. What makes it even harder is that there are no real guides or training manuals to assist in this process of parenting. As parents, we feel helpless at times. We run out of ideas; of things to do; of ways to approach a situation. We also run out of patience. Why can't teenagers just do as they're told? Why do they always have to push the limits? Further, with all the changes that society is experiencing and all the stresses of life that confront us, the parenting role seems to be getting harder. It doesn't however, have to be this way. If parents are prepared to seek advice and learn to be parents, then their children will develop like at least 80 percent of adolescents do -- relatively well-adjusted and capable individuals. Our kids do turn out okay. This book shows how to make sure that everyone can turn out alright. This book discusses some of the basics of growing up that parents need to know, and shows why adolescence is so "rocky." It also provides the secrets to giving your teenager healthy self-esteem before looking at how the adolescent can become independent and responsible. The real role of adolescence is finding one's identity. A tricky job at the best of times. The book outlines four major ways in which adolescents are able to find their own identity. The role of parents is to be the model and walk the talk. They also need to know how to "let go." There is a chapter of 30 Hints for dealing with adolescents plus a chapter headed Frequently Asked Questions. The book is punctuated with cartoons and quotes plus numerous case vignettes from the author's role as a clinical psychologist over three decades, his role as a life coach, a university lecturer, and importantly, father of three young adults.

Ann Benton admits that, when her children were teenagers, she enjoyed 'the very best of parenting years'. Yet, from her experience and that of others, she is all too well aware of the frustrations, pitfalls and difficulties that parenting teens can bring. The Bible book of Proverbs points to wisdom as the key to health, happiness and prosperity. The author points out that the job of parents is not first and foremost to make their teens successful, but to make them wise. With honesty and wit, Ann shows how Proverbs can speak directly into real life, however messy, today.

Parenting Practices and Adolescent Sexuality (Paperback): Michelle R. Rainey Parenting Practices and Adolescent Sexuality (Paperback)
Michelle R. Rainey
R1,188 Discovery Miles 11 880 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Adolescent sexual behavior is at the forefront of social science research because it is central to a number of social and medical issues; it remains a major public concern. Underlying factors that influence adolescent sexual behavior are investigated within a sociological framework. Aspects of sexuality are explored through the application of self-control theory which posits that parents are responsible for development of self-control in their children, and that the level of self-control determines the propensity to engage in risk-related behavior. It is hypothesized that adolescent perceptions of parental warmth and control influence adolescent level of self-control; that level of self-control influences engagement in risk-taking behavior; and that risk-taking behavior influences whether or not adolescents feel they are at risk for acquiring STDs. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, this study employs structural equation modeling using LISREL. Results showed adolescent level of self-control influences risk-taking behavior, and that engagement in risk-taking behavior does influence adolescent perception of risk for acquiring STDs. The findings are of great value for primary and secondary educators, public officials and policy makers, guidance counselors, parents or other concerned family members, and even for adolescents.
