For all the work on disability in previous years, there had been surprisingly little done on a subject of central importance - the social and psychological needs of teenagers with disabilities. Originally published in 1982, the purpose of this timely book was both to review the literature and to report an extensive study of the nature of the psychological problems, the quality of social life and the adequacy of the services available to a substantial group of teenagers with disabilities in the last years at school, with a follow-up study of half their number a year later. The authors show that many of these teenagers, including those with a mild disability, are often unhappy, worried and isolated from their peers. While the majority of the teenagers with disabilities, whether in ordinary or special schools, made friends at school, these friendships were rarely sustained outside. After leaving school the degree of social isolation is as great, and often worse. Among these teenagers the incidence of psychological problems was three to four times higher than for a control group, the most common being worry, depression, misery, fearfulness and lack of self-confidence and self-esteem. For the most part, the teenagers with disabilities were likely to be immature and ill-prepared to cope with adult life. These findings underline the need for a counselling service while the teenagers are still at school, and supporting services when they have left. Like other teenagers, those in this study were unprepared for the possibility of not having a job, and had not thought how to organize their lives if a job was not available or feasible. The authors draw attention to the large proportion of people with disabilities without occupation after leaving school, and the high dissatisfaction with day centres. Perhaps their most important finding is the need to rationalize the piecemeal and overlapping provision of help for school-leavers with disabilities. In the meantime, their book provides a wealth of information of direct use to those concerned with teenagers with disabilities and their families, whether in school provision, careers advice, work placement and alternatives to work, social services, counselling, medical services and further education. Originally published in 1980, this was the first book to provide a wide-ranging discussion of social work with adolescents, and is composed of linked original papers by the Social Work Group and their associates at the University of Bath. The contributors discuss adolescent development and the experience of adolescents and focus on what social workers might actually do with and for these young people. Following a general discussion of social work method, using the framework provided by systems theory, there is exploration of counselling with the adolescent and his family, group work and neighbourhood work with adolescents, and the residential care of adolescents. In addition, the book examines issues of interprofessional co-operation between the services provided for adolescents, and discusses some of the personal issues which confront the social worker who works with young people.

Based on the study of a large number of young people ranging in age from eleven to seventeen, Relationships in Adolescence, originally published in 1974, proposes a new model of adolescent development, described as the 'focal' model, which makes a valuable contribution to the greater understanding of adolescence for all who have contact with this age group. The book contains an examination of three different approaches to adolescence, an outline of the research project, and a discussion of the empirical evidence concerning identity and self-image, heterosexual and parental relationships, and large group situations. Comparisons are made between age levels and between boys and girls with respect to the whole range of relationships, and the evidence illustrates significant and at times dramatic differences between groups. Of particular importance are some of the changes which occur with age, such as the degree of conflict with parents and attitudes to sexuality. Based on Dr Coleman's findings is his fresh 'focal' model of adolescent development. This model stresses the elements of growth and change in adolescence, with special emphasis on the normal anxieties and conflicts that occur at different stages of the developmental period. Today it can be read and enjoyed in its historical context.

Originally published in 1941 and written in an attempt to dispute the popular assumption at the time that a 'bit of discipline' is what is needed for the correction of young men who show delinquent tendencies, this book is much more than that. Basically an account of a kind of voluntary Borstal Institution of which the author was head from 1936 to 1940, its interest on reissue in 1967 lay in the fact that it contained the germinal ideas of most of the day's newest methods in penal treatment, not just as ideas, but in practice. Here is the therapeutic community in embryo, here are the beginnings of group therapy, of inmate participation in treatment, of therapy through relationships. None of them are mentioned by name - the names had not been invented; but anyone who wanted to understand the trends in the treatment of delinquent and maladjusted people at the time would find it all here in simple untechnical English. The book is also an account of an enthralling experience, exciting and interesting in itself, apart from any social significance. Just before the camp started, Alec Paterson said to David Wills, 'Do you really think you can run a place of this kind without the use of punishment?' Wills said he didn't know, but looked forward to trying. Readers of this book may judge for themselves how far he succeeded. A particularly interesting feature of this edition is the account of the subsequent lives of the many boys who were at Hawkspur.

A story of everyday life in an American junior high school, originally published in 1983, this book demonstrates the ways in which the school culture of early adolescence both supports and denies the cultural and economic requirements of the parent society that surrounds it. It explores this school culture in relation to the local and national in political economy, to class, race and gender, and to the needs of the state. The author approaches the work of students in school as a labor process in the context of an advanced capitalist society. He describes such typical junior high activities as 'goofing off' and 'bugging the teacher' by examining the meaning of these activities to the students engaged in them, and brings acute observation and sensitivity to bear on the forms of resistance that arise among the students, showing that this resistance is a form of power which students exercise in the face of their estranged status. The nature and consequences of this resistance are examined in detail, especially as they relate to the context of a society in which estranged labor, in one form or another, is the dominant characteristic for most members. Throughout the book, the subtle pressures, the cliques, the vitality, the boredom and the ever-present humor of school life are explored. By integrating the insights of Habermas with the theories of Marx, the author is able to examine the tension between the 'reified knowledge' of the school and the 'regenerative knowledge' of the students in a sensitive ethnography which captures the student world in ways which have been missed in the past.

Originally published in 1993, Adolescent Drinking and Family Life portrays teenage drinking, not as a symptom of pathology, but as a perfectly normal developmental phase within the context of the home environment. Drinking is predominantly social behaviour and the family is seen as a major agent of socialization. The authors have therefore explored family dynamics and the influence which the home environment has upon adolescent drinking to come up with a new theoretical model. A major feature of this approach is the interaction of ideas from family life psychology and human geography. The authors present a typology of domestic regimes illustrated by case studies of boundary enforcement and transgression. The general theme of boundary transgression, applied here to both the psychosocial environment and built form, represents an interesting new theoretical perspective. The integration of these two fields is an innovation which should stimulate further interdisciplinary work in adolescence and addiction research. Adolescent Drinking and Family Life will be interesting to researchers and practitioners in adolescence, family dynamics, and alcohol as well as any social scientist with an interest in the link between behaviour and the home environment. This new approach had important implications for health education and for interventions concerned with adolescent alcohol use at the time. Today it can be read in its historical context.

'Girls are worse than boys these days' was a common complaint from teachers in the 1970s. Whether true or not, this viewpoint was pervasive, yet little guidance had been given to the student teachers to help them tackle the problems that girls presented. Originally published in 1980, the main purpose of this work was to provide a soundly based textbook on the education of adolescent girls which, by taking into account the changing role of women in our society at the time, would be of immediate use to all practitioners and students of education. Research findings, and material drawn from recent work by teachers in schools, have been collated along with theoretical approaches selected for their relevance to teaching in a manner which demonstrates their practical implications. The difficulties that teachers found in coping with the normal, as well as the abnormal, behaviour of girls is examined. The importance of education for girls is looked at in the context of their future roles as members of the work force and as mothers of the next generation. Reports and complaints about the inadequacies of the education system in preparing girls for their future life were rife. In dealing with a topic which was causing such concern the author set out to fill a noticeable gap in the literature of Education at the time. The book was designed for use by student teachers, lecturers, probationary teachers and their supervisors, but social workers, educational psychologists and others who deal with adolescents would also find it useful. For students its value rested in the practical orientation of its information which gave it the dual function of handbook and academic textbook. For practising teachers it gave advice, encouragement and support.

The transition from school to work is recognized by developmental psychologists as a significant phase in maturation of young people. In the 1990s the likelihood that the transition might be delayed by a period of prolonged unemployment was greater than any time since the 1930s. The psychological consequences of such a delay need to be understood because they may be damaging to both the individual and to society, particularly if they are long-lasting. Originally published in 1992, this Asian-authored book presents a cultural description and interpretation of American high school adolescent life and ethos, based on anthropological fieldwork in a semi-rural school and its surrounding community in Oregon. It combines a realistic account of late 1980s adolescent culture and a confessional tale of the Asian ethnographer's fieldwork experiences among American youngsters. The three main parts of the book focus on a portrayal of adolescent daily life, an interpretation of these young people's cultural values and ideals, and a reflection on the ethnographer's fieldwork experiences respectively. Part 1, Adolescent Life, includes five chapters presenting a brief version of a key informant life history, a profile of the school, a portrait of the community, a sketch of a typical school day, and adolescent life out of school. Divided into four chapters, Part 2, Adolescent Ethos, identifies three dimensions of adolescent ethos and analyzes dynamics between the dimensions and reflecting ideals. The last chapter of this part, 'The Duality of Ideals' discusses how adolescents negotiated themselves in a complicated web of various ideals pressing on them. Part 3, Doing Ethnography, reports procedural and personal aspects of doing ethnographic research in two separate chapters. The former discusses each step from locating a field to writing an ethnography; the latter describes personal feelings and scholarly thoughts which occurred during and after fieldwork. Adopting the most inconspicuous, unobtrusive form of research methods (she even dressed like them and acted with and among them), the ethnographer tried to listen to the young people's voices, peek into their lives from outside, and look out at the world through their eyes.

Originally published in 1966, this is a sociological study of boys growing up in East London. Previous books from the Institute of Community Studies had looked at the lives of other residents of Bethnal Green - couples with young children, middle-aged 'Mums', old people, widows. Now the subject is adolescent boys - a study of them not in isolation nor primarily as a 'problem' group but as young people moving between childhood and adulthood in the setting of a particular local community. What is it like to grow up in a district like Bethnal Green? How do the boys adjust to the process? What part is played by school, work, youth club, family? What are the boys' relationships with their fellows and with girls? Where does delinquency fit in? To help answer such questions, a sample of 246 boys aged 14 to 20 were interviewed. The statistical analysis of this survey has been supplemented by illustrative material from diaries, tape-recorded interviews, and informal observation. The outcome is a vivid account, much of it in the boys' own words, which was rather different from some popular views of contemporary adolescence at the time. Today it can be read and enjoyed in its historical context.

This book explores disrupted youth cohesion in France within the context of multiple ongoing global economic, migratory, social, political, and security-related crises.
