Tierra B. Tivis
R2,162 Discovery Miles 21 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Rethinking Black Motherhood and Drug Addictions: Counternarratives of Black Family Resilience offers a unique perspective on the complexities of being a Black mother addicted to crack, powder cocaine, heroin, and crank. Qualitative interviews provide rich narratives from five Black mothers challenging negative controlled images and stereotypes of Black motherhood and drug addiction. Using Black Feminist Thought, Critical Race Feminism, and Resilience as conceptual frameworks, this book confronts hegemonic constructions of Black mothers and their children within the context of drug addictions. Particular attention is focused on using the mothers' self-definitions of struggles and family resilience to dismantle the negative controlled images of the junkie and the crack ho' and her crack baby. The mothers in this book speak truth to their experiences with motherhood and addictions to some of the most powerful street drugs that explicitly defy the junkie, crack ho', and crack baby images. The book also addresses tensions existing within researcher-participant relationships and nuances unique to research with Black mothers in recovery. Personal lessons learned and challenges experienced during the research process are highlighted as Tivis shares dilemmas of self-reflections of positionality, accountability and use of language. Rethinking Black Motherhood and Drug Addictions contains important implications for research and practice in education and across other disciplines concentrating on mothers and children from racially diverse backgrounds. This book will be relevant for both undergraduate and graduate students and academics within these disciplines. Rethinking Black Motherhood and Drug Addictions will be of interest to advanced pre-service teachers and other disciplines engaging in clinical and professional practice with addiction and with families.

Drawing on education, sociology, and political science, this book addresses the theoretical basis of career guidance's involvement in social justice as well as the methodological consequences in relation to career guidance research.

The Journal of Education for Teaching at 40 (Hardcover): Peter Gilroy The Journal of Education for Teaching at 40 (Hardcover)
Peter Gilroy
R4,382 Discovery Miles 43 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In 2015, the Journal of Education for Teaching celebrated 40 years of original contributions on the subject of international teacher education with the publication of an anniversary virtual special issue. Its unique contribution to debates about the preparation and lifelong learning of teachers in a variety of fields, including medical education and language education, have been expressed in a variety of formats and international contexts. These include high quality academic papers using innovative qualitative and quantitative methodologies, symposia in the form of Platonic dialogues, and even critical positions expressed in verse. This virtual special issue was freely available online throughout 2015 but the strong demand for the papers has prompted their re-publication in this volume, with the addition of several more articles. Taken together, this collection will allow the reader to experience the variety of the dozen or so international contexts represented in the journal and its academic quality. Included in the volume is the original Editorial from the first issue of the journal. The fact that the points made in this forty-year-old piece still ring true suggests that the threats to high quality teacher education remain much the same as they did four decades or more ago. The Journal of Education for Teaching continues to provide an indispensable platform for colleagues to make their voices heard in what appears to be an increasingly shrill evidence-free environment. Long may it do so.

UNESCO's Utopia of Lifelong Learning - An Intellectual History (Hardcover): Maren Elfert UNESCO's Utopia of Lifelong Learning - An Intellectual History (Hardcover)
Maren Elfert
R4,220 Discovery Miles 42 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With a focus on lifelong learning, this book examines the shifts that UNESCO's educational concepts have undergone in reaction to historical pressures and dilemmas since the founding of the organization in 1945. The tensions between UNESCO's humanistic worldview and the pressures placed on the organization have forced UNESCO to depart from its utopian vision of lifelong learning, while still claiming continuity. Elfert interprets the history of lifelong learning in UNESCO as part of a much bigger story of a struggle of ideologies between a humanistic-emancipatory and an economistic-technocratic worldview. With a close study of UNESCO's two education flagship reports, the Faure and Delors reports, Elfert sheds light on the global impact of UNESCO's professed humanistic goals and its shifting influence on lifelong learning around the world.

Adaptive Education - An Inquiry-Based Institution (Hardcover): Robert Van Wynsberghe, Andrew Christopher Herman Adaptive Education - An Inquiry-Based Institution (Hardcover)
Robert Van Wynsberghe, Andrew Christopher Herman
R989 Discovery Miles 9 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The obstacles that prevent the latest educational research reaching the classroom are daunting: few channels to communicate the results of educational research, fewer opportunities for teachers to participate in research themselves, and little support for honing a scientific approach to teaching. The solution, according to Robert VanWynsberghe and Andrew C. Herman, is radical but simple: transform the educational institution itself into a laboratory for continuous experimentation. Inspired by the pragmatist theories of John Dewey and Roberto Unger, Adaptive Education explains how schools and universities can incorporate research processes into their activities, institutionalize a policy of inquiry and experimentation, and make teaching an evidence-based profession. An audacious proposal to reform the education system from the ground up, Adaptive Education is a roadmap for creating an institution that empowers teachers, parents, and the community to innovate, adapt, and explore.

Managing Your Competencies - Personal Development Plan (Hardcover): Roel Grit Managing Your Competencies - Personal Development Plan (Hardcover)
Roel Grit
R5,051 Discovery Miles 50 510 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A competency is a combination of knowledge, skills and attitude that one needs in order to function adequately in any given professional situation - a nurse must know how to give a crying child a vaccination, and a policeman must be able to stop a drunken brawl. Competency orientated teaching has become an important objective in higher education. To meet this objective, an individual personal development plan (PDP) is indispensable. PDPs are based on what one knows about one's own skills and what one needs to acquire for one's future profession. Managing Your Competencies shows the reader how to go about drawing up a PDP.

The Learning Society: Challenges and Trends (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Richard Edwards, Peter Raggatt, Nick Small The Learning Society: Challenges and Trends (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Richard Edwards, Peter Raggatt, Nick Small
R2,654 Discovery Miles 26 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The 'learning society' is not a new idea, although its popularity has grown in recent years with the suggestion that lifelong learning is a condition for economic competitiveness in a global economy, replacing the earlier conception of it as a condition for democratic citizenship. This reader, designed to accompany Module E827 of the MA in Education, critically examines the demographic, technological, economic and cultural challenges which have led to interest in the idea of a learning society, and explores their policy and practical implications for lifelong learning. It also explores and evaluates trends in education and training which support the development of a learning society. Overall, the book provides readers with a range of opinions on the learning society within which broad context they can place their own practice.

Reinventing Paulo Freire - A Pedagogy of Love (Hardcover): Antonia Darder Reinventing Paulo Freire - A Pedagogy of Love (Hardcover)
Antonia Darder
R4,206 Discovery Miles 42 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

One of the most influential critical educators of the twentieth century, Paulo Freire challenged those educational inequalities and conditions of injustice faced by oppressed populations. In this new edition of Reinventing Paulo Freire, Antonia Darder re-examines his legacy through reflections on Freirean pedagogy and the narratives of teachers who reinvent his work. The fully revised first part provides important historical, political, and economic connections between major societal concerns and educational questions raised by Freire and their link to the contemporary moment, including questions tied to neoliberalism, coloniality, and educational inequalities. At the heart of the book is a critical understanding of how Freire's pedagogy of love can inform, in theory and practice, a humanizing approach to teaching and learning. Powerful teacher narratives offer examples of a living praxis, committed to democratic classroom life and the emancipation of subaltern communities. The narratives clearly illustrate how Freire's ideas can be put concretely into practice in schools and communities. These reflections on Freirean praxis are sure to spark conversation and inspiration in teacher education courses. Through a close theoretical engagement of Freire's ideas and key insights garnered from lived experiences, the book speaks to the ways Freire can still inspire contemporary educators to adopt the spirit of liberatory pedagogy, By so doing, Reinventing Paulo Freire is certain to advance his theories in new ways, both to those familiar with his work and to those studying Freire for the first time.

Vocational Education beyond Skill Formation - VET between Civic, Industrial and Market Tensions (Paperback, New edition):... Vocational Education beyond Skill Formation - VET between Civic, Industrial and Market Tensions (Paperback, New edition)
Fernando Marhuenda-Fluixa
R2,631 Discovery Miles 26 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Vocational education and training has played an important role in the struggles between Work and Capital along history and today; there are examples of such tensions worldwide. The first section of this book provides illustrations of different countries from the 18th to the early 20th century. The authors explain and exemplify the education of the workforce and its political engagement, contributing to the formation of the working class. The chapters provide relevant approaches to how young apprentices and adult workers developed a class consciousness through vocational education. The second section illustrates practices of resistance and transformation within policies and practices of vocational education nowadays in Central and Southern Europe and South America, addressing the needs of people with disabilities and dispossessed populations. The final section analyses how theories and policies intertwine resulting in the idiosyncrasy of vocational education practices across the world, through tensions between logics and institutional actors. The book addresses the political dimensions of Vocational Education and problematizes its mere consideration as an instrumental tool in skill formation.

A Critical Auto/Ethnography of Learning Spanish - Intercultural competence on the gringo trail? (Hardcover): Phiona Stanley A Critical Auto/Ethnography of Learning Spanish - Intercultural competence on the gringo trail? (Hardcover)
Phiona Stanley
R4,493 Discovery Miles 44 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The premise that intercultural contact produces intercultural competence underpins much rationalization of backpacker tourism and in-country language education. However, if insufficiently problematized, pre-existing constructions of cultural 'otherness' may hinder intercultural competence development. This is nowhere truer than in contexts in which wide disparities of power, wealth, and privilege exist, and where such positionings may go unproblematized. This study contributes to theoretical understandings of how intercultural competence develops through intercultural contact situations through a detailed, multiple case study of three conceptually comparable contexts in which Western backpackers study Spanish in Latin America. This experience, often 'bundled' with home-stay, volunteer work, social, and tourist experiences, offers a rich set of empirical data within which to understand the nature of intercultural competence and the processes through which it may be developed. Models of a single, context-free, transferable intercultural competence are rejected. Instead, suggestions are made as to how educators might help prepare intercultural sojourners by scaffolding their intercultural reflections and problematizing their own intersectional identities and their assumptions. The study is a critical ethnography with elements of autoethnographic reflection. The book therefore also contributes to development of this qualitative research methodology and provides an empirical example of its application.

Re-Assembly Required - Critical Autoethnography and Spiritual Discovery (Hardcover, New edition): Gresilda a Tilley-Lubbs Re-Assembly Required - Critical Autoethnography and Spiritual Discovery (Hardcover, New edition)
Gresilda a Tilley-Lubbs
R2,090 Discovery Miles 20 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Entering the academy as an older woman, the author had not foreseen the challenges that awaited her when she left behind a successful career as a public school Spanish teacher/department head to pursue a Ph.D. She took for granted her position of power and privilege in an educational setting, not at all prepared for the rapid demotion of respect, self-confidence, and salary that she soon faced as an older Ph.D. student/Spanish adjunct faculty member at a research university that would serve as her academic, and later professional, career home for the rest of her working years. In this critical autoethnography, she troubles her journey through the Ph.D. and the tenure process, as well as in her position as a tenured professor. She describes a process that led her into/through the murky waters and mire of academic machinations into the light of spiritual discovery to affirm wholeness and celebration of Self. What sets this book apart is the author's refreshing willingness to critically interrogate her Self throughout the process. Re-Assembly Required: Critical Autoethnography and Spiritual Discovery can be used in graduate and undergraduate courses in arts-based research writing, advancements in qualitative inquiry, autoethnography writing, creative non-fiction writing, women's studies, and critical pedagogy. This book provides a methodological explanation of critical autoethnography and serves as an exemplar for how autoethnography can be combined with critical pedagogy to perform writing that examines the university as institution through the lens of personal narrative. This compelling creative non-fiction narrative is appropriate for both academic and non-academic audiences.

Chapters explore how community colleges can and do facilitate the STEM pipeline, as well as the experiences of these students in community college, including how psychological factors, developmental coursework, expertiential learning, and motivation affect student success. Keratso Georgiadou
R1,362 Discovery Miles 13 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the Muslim minority women's perceptions of how computer education can lead them to social participation. Moreover, it discusses the contribution of (administrative) members of the community to this effort. The analysis of quantitative findings shows that Muslim women in Greek Thrace exhibit a more western-oriented behavioural intention to use computers. By evaluating multiple interviews, the author presents how women use the potential of computer education for social participation and empowerment. In doing so, she emphasises the role of information and communications technology as a window to the outside world.

Boundaries of Adult Learning (Hardcover): Richard Edwards, Ann Hanson, Peter Raggatt Boundaries of Adult Learning (Hardcover)
Richard Edwards, Ann Hanson, Peter Raggatt
R4,227 Discovery Miles 42 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Until relatively recently, adult learning in the UK was largely recognised as being situated mainly within the LEA adult education centre, university extra-mural departments and the WEA. However, this picture has changed. The major change has been a shift from 'education' to 'learning' as the key organising concept. A greater range of settings are now recognised as sites producing learning, and alongside this has grown a debate about the purpose and form of study within adult learning. This has led people to question both the concept of adult learning and the boundaries of its provision. This book reviews and assesses the changes which are taking place. It explores the disputes surrounding adult learning, discussing how boundaries have blurred thereby creating new opportunities such as APL and credit transfer, and including a significantly wider range of activities within the definition of learning. It also assesses the extent to which, despite the changes in boundaries, inequalities in learning opportunities still persist.

Richard Edwards, Ann Hanson, Mary Thorpe
R4,225 Discovery Miles 42 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The authors provide a variety of perspectives on the conceptualisation of adult learning, drawing on sociology, psychology, adult education and applied research into how adults experience learning. Bringing together a number of major contributions to current debates about what learning during adulthood is for, what motivates learning, and how best it might be developed, the authors address a range of significant issues: What should be the context of learning programmed for adults, and who should decide? What are the implications in general and for women in particular of the current emphasis on learning for work, at work? How do adults learn and how is learning best facilitated? How might learning be used to empower individuals, communities and organisations?
