This book is based on a fieldwork intensive, EU funded project, aimed at sustaining the empowerment processes of career guidance practitioners by developing their awareness and use of their individual, organizational and networking resources. The field work activity was carried out in three different national contexts: Italy, Bulgaria and Switzerland, and based on a creative methodological approach called Participative and Appreciative Action and Reflection (PAAR). The contributions cover a wide range of intertwined subjects. These include (a) deep reflection on life long career guidance (LLCG) systems and processes in the three national contexts involved, (b) the challenges of managing PAAR projects in organisations (c) the role of a participative and appreciative approaches in facilitating a positive shift from professionals inside welfare state institutions, to a more counselling oriented mission (d) how to build up an appreciative memory that is a way of representing experience and creating space for relationships so that they remain stable over time (e) reflection on what may happen to learning processes if the contexts in which the empowerment practices are implemented happen through a virtual environment such as a blog or a social network. The Editors are all experienced researchers and practitioners working if the field of facilitation, life long career guidance, counselling, reflective learning and social innovation. Conflicting Paradigms in Adult Literacy Education - In Quest of a U.S. Democratic Politics of Literacy (Paperback, New): George... Conflicting Paradigms in Adult Literacy Education - In Quest of a U.S. Democratic Politics of Literacy (Paperback, New)
George Demetrion
R1,257 Discovery Miles 12 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The book provides a historical overview of adult literacy theory, policy, practice, and research from the mid-1980s to the present. The main focus is a descriptive analysis of three distinctive schools of literacy: the Freirean-based participatory literacy movement grounded in oppositional politics and grass-roots community activism; the British-based New Literacy Studies that focuses on the ways in which diverse students utilize various literacy practices in their daily lives; and the U.S. federal government's focus on functional literacy linked to a 45-year policy emphasis on workforce readiness. These three schools of thought lead to substantially different implications over such critical areas as curriculum, assessment and accountability, and the socio-cultural role of literacy, policy, and political culture, which are discussed throughout the chapters of the book. This discussion includes a chapter on research traditions that closely parallels these perspectives on literacy education. Demetrion argues that unless values grounded ultimately in political culture emerge, it is exceedingly unlikely that the adult literacy field will be able to move from its current marginalized status toward that of achieving the level of public and policy legitimacy many believe it needs for its long-term institutional flourishing. It is argued that any settlement of this issue must be accomplished in the field of practice rather than the ground of theory, even as theoretical insight can help to frame the issues. Conflicting Paradigms in Adult Literacy Education: In Quest of a U.S. Democratic Politics of Literacy speaks to a wide audience, including not only the adult literacy community, but anyone interested in educational theory, practice, policy, research traditions, or political culture, and more fundamentally, in their intersection. Given the breadth of the topics covered, as well as the broad scope of the argument, the book is also meant for those who would like to gain a useful perspective on contemporary U.S. culture, through the window of these conflicting tensions within the field of adult literacy education.

Teachers and Teaching in Vocational and Professional Education (Paperback): Sai Loo Teachers and Teaching in Vocational and Professional Education (Paperback)
Sai Loo
R1,321 Discovery Miles 13 210 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Teachers and Teaching in Vocational and Professional Education introduces a critical understanding of how teachers deliver occupational or vocational courses at various academic levels. Including wider coverage of work-related programmes and based on empirical research, this book uses the term occupation-related to refer to programmes spanning several academic levels and education sectors, including the further and higher education sectors. The book disassociates the English context of work-related studies, where issues of the academic-vocational division and socio-cultural dimensions have hampered critical investigations of this under-researched topic. Also, it offers a conceptual framework from the perspectives of teachers in their teaching and work-related settings derived from the understanding and development of Bernstein's recontextualization process. Teachers and Teaching in Vocational and Professional Education will be of great interest to academics, researchers and postgraduates who are engaged in the study of education and occupation-related programmes. The programme areas include accounting, dental hygiene, equine studies, fashion and textiles, health and social care, medical training of clinicians and emergency medicine, and travel and tourism.

Barry J Hake, Bastiaan Van Gent, Jozsef Katus
R1,952 Discovery Miles 19 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume comprises an edited selection of papers which were originally presented at the 9th International Conference of the History of Adult Education that was held in Leiden in September 2002. The theme of that conference and this volume addresses the key dynamics associated with the impact of globalisation upon both the historical and contemporary development of the organisation of adult learning. Following a general introduction to the key themes by the chief editor, the first section of the volume comprises a number of papers of a distinctly historical nature. The focus in this section is upon the development of organised adult learning as a major component of the European modernisation project from the Enlightenment period in the eighteenth century to the twentieth century. The second section examines contemporary developments and the emergence of new forms for the organisation of adult learning in the learning society. The emphasis here is upon those societal developments that contribute to the centrality of lifelong learning in current education and training policies. The third section comprises a number of country studies focused upon the dilemmas associated with the restructuring of national education and training policies. Issues of social inclusion and the risk of exclusion form the recurring theme of these country studies.

The Learning Society in a Postmodern World - The Education Crisis (Paperback): Kenneth Wain The Learning Society in a Postmodern World - The Education Crisis (Paperback)
Kenneth Wain
R918 Discovery Miles 9 180 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Lifelong learning has become a key concern as the focus of educational policy has shifted from mass schooling toward the learning society. The shift started in the mid 1960s and early 1970s under the impetus of a group of writers and adult educators, gravitating around UNESCO, with a humanist philosophy and a leftist agenda. The vocabulary of that movement was appropriated in the 1990s by other interests with a very different performativist agenda emphasizing effectiveness and economic outcomes. This change of interest, described in the book, has signified the death of education. The Learning Society in a Postmodern World explores different theoretical resources to respond to this situation, mainly those that propose some restoration of an educated public or, to the contrary, individual self-creation, and uses the works of a broad range of philosophers and thinkers--notably MacIntyre, Habermas, Foucault, Derrida, Rorty, and Baudrillard. In addition, it raises important questions about postmodern and poststructuralist responses to education in the postmodern world. Its comprehensiveness and historical background make it an essential textbook for theoretical courses in lifelong learning and in educational theory in general. A broad range of interests and subject matter make it important reading for educators, policy specialists, media specialists, researchers on the subject of lifelong learning and on the relation between education and the postmodern world, political theorists, philosophers, and philosophers of education.

Towards a History of Adult Education in America - The Search for a Unifying Principle (Hardcover): Harold W. Stubblefield Towards a History of Adult Education in America - The Search for a Unifying Principle (Hardcover)
Harold W. Stubblefield
R3,256 Discovery Miles 32 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1988 this book examines the work of the first generation adult education theorists and the traditions that their work helped establish. They debated the issues, aims and content of adult education programmes and began to explore the often difficult relationship between social expectations and the potential of education. As well as providing an authoritative history during a period of rapid social change in America, the book confirms that many of the preoccupations of the early thinkers have continued relevance today.

Post-Education Society - Recognising Adults as Learners (Hardcover): Norman Evans Post-Education Society - Recognising Adults as Learners (Hardcover)
Norman Evans
R2,883 Discovery Miles 28 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1985, this book argues that to make sense any attempt to improve the situation must take account of what we now know about adult growth and development, accepting as an operational imperative that it is as problematic and turbulent as childhood. The book claims that since adults flourish to the extent that they have a sense of personal recognition, the business of education is to enable people to gain that sense of being recognised and valued through any learning they undertake. It suggests that putting adults in charge of their own learning is the logical extension of establishing a public education system and so is a necessary step towards our society becoming a democracy of learners. This important book marked a watershed in the literature on adult and continuing education.

Adult Education and Community Action - Adult Education and Popular Social Movements (Hardcover): Tom Lovett, Chris Clarke,... Adult Education and Community Action - Adult Education and Popular Social Movements (Hardcover)
Tom Lovett, Chris Clarke, Avila Kilmurray
R2,882 Discovery Miles 28 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1982, this book discusses the role of adult education in social and community action. In particular it presents a critical assessment of 'community education' and the theories of Illich, Freire and Gramsci and it proves that there is a radical adult education tradition in the USA, Europe and North America which can offer many insights into the contemporary debate about the role of adult learning. The material is based on a decade of practical involvement in community action and education in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, where - despite deep political and religious divisions - community action has united Catholics and Protestants in a common resolve.

Ellen Boeren, Nalita James
R3,268 Discovery Miles 32 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines the experiences of adult learners in times of austerity. The power of adult education to transform lives is well known, and it is especially powerful for those who missed out on educational opportunities earlier in life. Those who have been successful learners in the past are more likely to continue their education and training, making extra support and funding ever-more important: however, in the current economic and political climate, support for adult learning is significantly decreasing. This book sheds light on the experiences of adult learners, despite the difficulties facing the sector: interweaving empirical discussions with theoretical debates, the editors and contributors demonstrate the challenges and struggles of adult learners in higher, further and community education. This enlightening edited collection will be of interest to all those involved in adult education as well as policy makers and funders.

Professionalism in Post-Compulsory Education and Training - Empirical and Theoretical Perspectives (Hardcover): Jonathan Tummons Professionalism in Post-Compulsory Education and Training - Empirical and Theoretical Perspectives (Hardcover)
Jonathan Tummons
R3,980 Discovery Miles 39 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

What does 'professionalism' mean for teachers and trainers in further education colleges or adult education centres? Over the last twenty years, ideas about professionalism and professional identity within the post-compulsory sector have been shaped and reshaped by successive policies, standards, and professional bodies. Yet, these ideas themselves remain controversial and continue to be the focus of debate as well as research. This book gathers together a series of articles published over the last ten years, providing critical and research-based perspectives on professionalism within post-compulsory education and training. The twelve chapters that are presented here explore issues such as professional standards and continuing professional development and their impact on current definitions and frameworks of professionalism, as well as the policies that have shaped these processes. These are issues that are of relevance and importance not only to practitioners and researchers in the post-compulsory sector, but to anyone who is concerned with contemporary debates about what it means to be 'a professional' in education and training. The chapters in this book were originally published as articles in Research in Post-Compulsory Education.

Adult Education and Socialist Pedagogy (Hardcover): Frank Youngman Adult Education and Socialist Pedagogy (Hardcover)
Frank Youngman
R3,265 Discovery Miles 32 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1986, this book was written at a time of increasing pressure on traditional areas of secondary and higher education and changing employment patterns - a situation which still exists today. Then, as now, there is increased awareness that the continuing education of adults has a vital role to play in our society. This volume develops a socialist pedagogy within adult education, using a Marxist theoretical framework. It proposes socialism as the radical form of change necessary to remove obstacles to greater social justice and educational equality and studies the implications of this political position for adult education.

Theory and Practice in the Study of Adult Education - The Epistemological Debate (Hardcover): Barry P Bright Theory and Practice in the Study of Adult Education - The Epistemological Debate (Hardcover)
Barry P Bright

Originally published in 1989, this book presents a variety of perspectives on the definition of knowledge and of adult education, by leading authors and practitioners in the study of adult education in the UK and USA. Learning Networks in Adult Education - Non-formal Education on a Housing Estate (Hardcover): Paul Fordham, Geoff Poulton,... Learning Networks in Adult Education - Non-formal Education on a Housing Estate (Hardcover)
Paul Fordham, Geoff Poulton, Lawrence Randle
R3,256 Discovery Miles 32 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1979, this book reports on a 3 year action research programme (The New Communities Project) which aimed in increase working-class participation in adult education. Basing their argument on the work of the Project, the authors contend that adult education must begin with the people themselves, to go on and assist their intellectual, social, psychological, cultural and political growth. In their view, adult education needs to be identified as something more flexible than 'classes', whilst also distinguishing between non-formal education and other kinds of community work or development. Providing different perspectives on the way in which a service relates to a particular area, the book's conclusions have a bearing on both practice and training in a variety of areas concerned with social intervention.
