Topological and Uniform Spaces (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1987): I. M. James Topological and Uniform Spaces (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1987)
I. M. James
R1,524 Discovery Miles 15 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is based on lectures I have given to undergraduate and graduate audiences at Oxford and elsewhere over the years. My aim has been to provide an outline of both the topological theory and the uniform theory, with an emphasis on the relation between the two. Although I hope that the prospec tive specialist may find it useful as an introduction it is the non-specialist I have had more in mind in selecting the contents. Thus I have tended to avoid the ingenious examples and counterexamples which often occupy much ofthe space in books on general topology, and I have tried to keep the number of definitions down to the essential minimum. There are no particular pre requisites but I have worked on the assumption that a potential reader will already have had some experience of working with sets and functions and will also be familiar with the basic concepts of algebra and analysis. There are a number of fine books on general topology, some of which I have listed in the Select Bibliography at the end of this volume. Of course I have benefited greatly from this previous work in writing my own account. Undoubtedly the strongest influence is that of Bourbaki's Topologie Generale 2], the definitive treatment of the subject which first appeared over a genera tion ago."

A Survey of Knot Theory (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1996): Akio Kawauchi A Survey of Knot Theory (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1996)
Akio Kawauchi
R3,748 Discovery Miles 37 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Knot theory is a rapidly developing field of research with many applications not only for mathematics. The present volume, written by a well-known specialist, gives a complete survey of knot theory from its very beginnings to today's most recent research results. The topics include Alexander polynomials, Jones type polynomials, and Vassiliev invariants. With its appendix containing many useful tables and an extended list of references with over 3,500 entries it is an indispensable book for everyone concerned with knot theory. The book can serve as an introduction to the field for advanced undergraduate and graduate students. Also researchers working in outside areas such as theoretical physics or molecular biology will benefit from this thorough study which is complemented by many exercises and examples.

Topological Social Choice (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1997): Geoffrey Heal Topological Social Choice (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1997)
Geoffrey Heal
R2,421 Discovery Miles 24 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The origins of this volume can be traced back to a conference on "Ethics, Economic and Business" organized by Columbia Busi ness School in March of 1993, and held in the splendid facilities of Columbia's Casa Italiana. Preliminary versions of several of the papers were presented at that meeting. In July 1994 the Fields Institute of Mathematical Sciences sponsored a workshop on "Geometry, Topology and Markets" additional papers and more refined versions of the original papers were presented there. They were published in their present versions in Social Choice and Wel fare, volume 14, number 2, 1997. The common aim of these workshops and this volume is to crystallize research in an area which has emerged rapidly in the last fifteen years, the area of topological approaches to social choice and the theory of games. The area is attracting increasing interest from social choice theorists, game theorists, mathematical econ omists and mathematicians, yet there is no authoritative collection of papers in the area. Nor is there any surveyor book to give a perspective and act as a guide to the issues in and contributions to this new area. One of the two aims of this volume is in some measure to play this role: the other aim is of course to present interesting and surprising new results."

Topological Methods in Algebraic Transformation Groups - Proceedings of a Conference at Rutgers University (Paperback,... Topological Methods in Algebraic Transformation Groups - Proceedings of a Conference at Rutgers University (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1989)
Kraft
R1,535 Discovery Miles 15 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In recent years, there has been increasing interest and activity in the area of group actions on affine and projective algebraic varieties. Tech niques from various branches of mathematics have been important for this study, especially those coming from the well-developed theory of smooth compact transformation groups. It was timely to have an interdisciplinary meeting on these topics. We organized the conference "Topological Methods in Alg braic Transformation Groups," which was held at Rutgers University, 4-8 April, 1988. Our aim was to facilitate an exchange of ideas and techniques among mathematicians studying compact smooth transformation groups, alge braic transformation groups and related issues in algebraic and analytic geometry. The meeting was well attended, and these Proceedings offer a larger audience the opportunity to benefit from the excellent survey and specialized talks presented. The main topics concerned various as pects of group actions, algebraic quotients, homogeneous spaces and their compactifications. The meeting was made possible by support from Rutgers University and the National Science Foundation. We express our deep appreciation for this support. We also thank Annette Neuen for her assistance with the technical preparation of these Proceedings."

Algebraic Topology: New Trends in Localization and Periodicity - Barcelona Conference on Algebraic Topology, Sant Feliu de... Algebraic Topology: New Trends in Localization and Periodicity - Barcelona Conference on Algebraic Topology, Sant Feliu de Guixols, Spain, June 1-7, 1994 (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1996)
Carles Broto, Carles Casacuberta, Guido Mislin
R1,597 Discovery Miles 15 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Central to this collection of papers are new developments in the general theory of localization of spaces. This field has undergone tremendous change of late and is yielding new insight into the mysteries of classical homotopy theory. The present volume comprises the refereed articles submitted at the Conference on Algebraic Topology held in Sant Feliu de Guixols, Spain, in June 1994. Several comprehensive articles on general localization clarify the basic tools and give a report on the state of the art in the subject matter. The text is therefore accessible not only to the professional mathematician but also to the advanced student.

Algebraic Topology of Finite Topological Spaces and Applications (Paperback, 2011 ed.): Jonathan A. Barmak Algebraic Topology of Finite Topological Spaces and Applications (Paperback, 2011 ed.)
Jonathan A. Barmak
R1,307 Discovery Miles 13 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume deals with the theory of finite topological spaces and its relationship with the homotopy and simple homotopy theory of polyhedra. The interaction between their intrinsic combinatorial and topological structures makes finite spaces a useful tool for studying problems in Topology, Algebra and Geometry from a new perspective. In particular, the methods developed in this manuscript are used to study Quillen's conjecture on the poset of p-subgroups of a finite group and the Andrews-Curtis conjecture on the 3-deformability of contractible two-dimensional complexes. This self-contained work constitutes the first detailed exposition on the algebraic topology of finite spaces. It is intended for topologists and combinatorialists, but it is also recommended for advanced undergraduate students and graduate students with a modest knowledge of Algebraic Topology.

Algebraic K-Theory and Its Applications (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1994): Jonathan Rosenberg Algebraic K-Theory and Its Applications (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1994)
Jonathan Rosenberg
R1,970 Discovery Miles 19 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Algebraic K-Theory plays an important role in many areas of modern mathematics: most notably algebraic topology, number theory, and algebraic geometry, but even including operator theory. The broad range of these topics has tended to give the subject an aura of inapproachability. This book, based on a course at the University of Maryland in the fall of 1990, is intended to enable graduate students or mathematicians working in other areas not only to learn the basics of algebraic K-Theory, but also to get a feel for its many applications. The required prerequisites are only the standard one-year graduate algebra course and the standard introductory graduate course on algebraic and geometric topology. Many topics from algebraic topology, homological algebra, and algebraic number theory are developed as needed. The final chapter gives a concise introduction to cyclic homology and its interrelationship with K-Theory.

Kleinian Groups (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1988): Bernard Maskit Kleinian Groups (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1988)
Bernard Maskit
R2,962 Discovery Miles 29 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The modern theory of Kleinian groups starts with the work of Lars Ahlfors and Lipman Bers; specifically with Ahlfors' finiteness theorem, and Bers' observation that their joint work on the Beltrami equation has deep implications for the theory of Kleinian groups and their deformations. From the point of view of uniformizations of Riemann surfaces, Bers' observation has the consequence that the question of understanding the different uniformizations of a finite Riemann surface poses a purely topological problem; it is independent of the conformal structure on the surface. The last two chapters here give a topological description of the set of all (geometrically finite) uniformizations of finite Riemann surfaces. We carefully skirt Ahlfors' finiteness theorem. For groups which uniformize a finite Riemann surface; that is, groups with an invariant component, one can either start with the assumption that the group is finitely generated, and then use the finiteness theorem to conclude that the group represents only finitely many finite Riemann surfaces, or, as we do here, one can start with the assumption that, in the invariant component, the group represents a finite Riemann surface, and then, using essentially topological techniques, reach the same conclusion. More recently, Bill Thurston wrought a revolution in the field by showing that one could analyze Kleinian groups using 3-dimensional hyperbolic geome try, and there is now an active school of research using these methods."

From Objects to Diagrams for Ranges of Functors (Paperback, 2011 ed.): Pierre Gillibert, Friedrich Wehrung From Objects to Diagrams for Ranges of Functors (Paperback, 2011 ed.)
Pierre Gillibert, Friedrich Wehrung
R1,270 Discovery Miles 12 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This work introduces tools, from the field of category theory, that make it possible to tackle until now unsolvable representation problems (determination of the range of a given functor). The basic idea is: if a functor lifts many objects, then it also lifts many (poset-indexed) diagrams.

Christian Okonek, Michael Schneider, Heinz Spindler
R2,695 Discovery Miles 26 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

These lecture notes are intended as an introduction to the methods of classi?cation of holomorphic vector bundles over projective algebraic manifolds X. To be as concrete as possible we have mostly restricted ourselves to the case X = P . According to Serre (GAGA) the class- n cation of holomorphic vector bundles is equivalent to the classi?cation of algebraic vector bundles. Here we have used almost exclusively the language of analytic geometry. The book is intended for students who have a basic knowledge of analytic and (or) algebraic geometry. Some fundamental results from these ?elds are summarized at the beginning. One of the authors gave a survey in the Seminaire Bourbaki 1978 on the current state of the classi?cation of holomorphic vector bundles over P . This lecture then served as the basis for a course of lectures n in G]ottingen in the Winter Semester 78/79. The present work is an extended and up-dated exposition of that course. Because of the - troductory nature of this book we have had to leave out some di?cult topics such as the restriction theorem of Barth. As compensation we have appended to each section a paragraph in which historical remarks are made, further results indicated and unsolved problems presented. The book is divided into two chapters. Each chapter is subdivided into several sections which in turn are made up of a number of pa- graphs. Each section is preceded by a short description of its contents."

Algebraic Topology from a Homotopical Viewpoint (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2002): Marcelo Aguilar Algebraic Topology from a Homotopical Viewpoint (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2002)
Marcelo Aguilar; Translated by S.B. Sontz; Samuel Gitler, Carlos Prieto
R2,003 Discovery Miles 20 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The authors present introductory material in algebraic topology from a novel point of view in using a homotopy-theoretic approach. This carefully written book can be read by any student who knows some topology, providing a useful method to quickly learn this novel homotopy-theoretic point of view of algebraic topology.

Morse Theory Of Gradient Flows, Concavity And Complexity On Manifolds With Boundary (Hardcover): Gabriel Katz Morse Theory Of Gradient Flows, Concavity And Complexity On Manifolds With Boundary (Hardcover)
Gabriel Katz
R4,937 Discovery Miles 49 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This monograph is an account of the author's investigations of gradient vector flows on compact manifolds with boundary. Many mathematical structures and constructions in the book fit comfortably in the framework of Morse Theory and, more generally, of the Singularity Theory of smooth maps. The geometric and combinatorial structures, arising from the interactions of vector flows with the boundary of the manifold, are surprisingly rich. This geometric setting leads organically to many encounters with Singularity Theory, Combinatorics, Differential Topology, Differential Geometry, Dynamical Systems, and especially with the boundary value problems for ordinary differential equations. This diversity of connections animates the book and is the main motivation behind it.The book is divided into two parts. The first part describes the flows in three dimensions. It is more pictorial in nature. The second part deals with the multi-dimensional flows, and thus is more analytical. Each of the nine chapters starts with a description of its purpose and main results. This organization provides the reader with independent entrances into different chapters.

Topological Fixed Point Principles for Boundary Value Problems (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2003): J.... Topological Fixed Point Principles for Boundary Value Problems (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2003)
J. Andres, Lech Gorniewicz
R1,734 Discovery Miles 17 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Our book is devoted to the topological fixed point theory both for single-valued and multivalued mappings in locally convex spaces, including its application to boundary value problems for ordinary differential equations (inclusions) and to (multivalued) dynamical systems. It is the first monograph dealing with the topo- logical fixed point theory in non-metric spaces. Although the theoretical material was tendentially selected with respect to ap- plications, we wished to have a self-consistent text (see the scheme below). There- fore, we supplied three appendices concerning almost-periodic and derivo-periodic single-valued {multivalued) functions and (multivalued) fractals. The last topic which is quite new can be also regarded as a contribution to the fixed point theory in hyperspaces. Nevertheless, the reader is assumed to be at least partly famil- iar in some related sections with the notions like the Bochner integral, the Au- mann multivalued integral, the Arzela-Ascoli lemma, the Gronwall inequality, the Brouwer degree, the Leray-Schauder degree, the topological (covering) dimension, the elemens of homological algebra, ...Otherwise, one can use the recommended literature. Hence, in Chapter I, the topological and analytical background is built. Then, in Chapter II (and partly already in Chapter I), topological principles necessary for applications are developed, namely: the fixed point index theory (resp. the topological degree theory), the Lefschetz and the Nielsen theories both in absolute and relative cases, periodic point theorems, topological essentiality, continuation-type theorems.

Handbook of Topological Fixed Point Theory (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2005): Robert F. Brown, Massimo Furi, L. Gorniewicz, Boju Jiang Handbook of Topological Fixed Point Theory (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2005)
Robert F. Brown, Massimo Furi, L. Gorniewicz, Boju Jiang
R4,687 Discovery Miles 46 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Fixed point theory concerns itself with a very simple, and basic, mathematical setting. For a functionf that has a setX as bothdomain and range, a ?xed point off isa pointx ofX for whichf(x)=x. Two fundamental theorems concerning ?xed points are those of Banach and of Brouwer. In Banach's theorem, X is a complete metric space with metricd andf:X?X is required to be a contraction, that is, there must existL< 1 such thatd(f(x),f(y))?Ld(x,y) for allx,y?X. Theconclusion is thatf has a ?xed point, in fact exactly one of them. Brouwer'stheorem requiresX to betheclosed unit ball in a Euclidean space and f:X?X to be a map, that is, a continuous function. Again we can conclude that f has a ?xed point. But in this case the set of?xed points need not be a single point, in fact every closed nonempty subset of the unit ball is the ?xed point set for some map. ThemetriconX in Banach'stheorem is used in the crucialhypothesis about the function, that it is a contraction. The unit ball in Euclidean space is also metric, and the metric topology determines the continuity of the function, but the focus of Brouwer's theorem is on topological characteristics of the unit ball, in particular that it is a contractible ?nite polyhedron. The theorems of Banach and Brouwer illustrate the di?erence between the two principal branches of ?xed point theory: metric ?xed point theory and topological ?xed point theory.

The Moduli Space of Curves (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1995): Robert H. Dijkgraaf, Carel Faber,... The Moduli Space of Curves (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1995)
Robert H. Dijkgraaf, Carel Faber, Gerard B.M. van der Geer
R7,294 Discovery Miles 72 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The moduli space Mg of curves of fixed genus g - that is, the algebraic variety that parametrizes all curves of genus g - is one of the most intriguing objects of study in algebraic geometry these days. Its appeal results not only from its beautiful mathematical structure but also from recent developments in theoretical physics, in particular in conformal field theory.

Syzygies and Homotopy Theory (Hardcover, 2012): F. E. A. Johnson Syzygies and Homotopy Theory (Hardcover, 2012)
F. E. A. Johnson
R1,598 Discovery Miles 15 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The most important invariant of a topological space is its fundamental group. When this is trivial, the resulting homotopy theory is well researched and familiar. In the general case, however, homotopy theory over nontrivial fundamental groups is much more problematic and far less well understood.

"Syzygies and Homotopy Theory" explores the problem of nonsimply connected homotopy in the first nontrivial cases and presents, for the first time, a systematic rehabilitation of Hilbert's method of syzygies in the context of non-simply connected homotopy theory. The first part of the book is theoretical, formulated to allow a general finitely presented group as a fundamental group. The innovation here is to regard syzygies as stable modules rather than minimal modules. Inevitably this forces a reconsideration of the problems of noncancellation; these are confronted in the second, practical, part of the book. In particular, the second part of the book considers how the theory works out in detail for the specific examples "F""n"" "F where "F""n "is a free group of rank "n" and F is finite. Another innovation is to parametrize the first syzygy in terms of the more familiar class of stably free modules. Furthermore, detailed description of these stably free modules is effected by a suitable modification of the method of Milnor squares.

The theory developed within this book has potential applications in various branches of algebra, including homological algebra, ring theory and K-theory. "Syzygies and Homotopy Theory "will be of interest to researchers and also to graduate students with a background in algebra and algebraic topology."

Cyclic Homology in Non-Commutative Geometry (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2004): Joachim Cuntz, Georges... Cyclic Homology in Non-Commutative Geometry (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2004)
Joachim Cuntz, Georges Skandalis, Boris Tsygan
R2,905 Discovery Miles 29 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Contributions by three authors treat aspects of noncommutative geometry that are related to cyclic homology. The authors give rather complete accounts of cyclic theory from different points of view. The connections between (bivariant) K-theory and cyclic theory via generalized Chern-characters are discussed in detail. Cyclic theory is the natural setting for a variety of general abstract index theorems. A survey of such index theorems is given and the concepts and ideas involved in these theorems are explained.

Generalized Etale Cohomology Theories (Paperback, Reprint of the 1997 Edition): John F. Jardine Generalized Etale Cohomology Theories (Paperback, Reprint of the 1997 Edition)
John F. Jardine
R2,430 Discovery Miles 24 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A generalized etale cohomology theory is a theory which is represented by a presheaf of spectra on an etale site for an algebraic variety, in analogy with the way an ordinary spectrum represents a cohomology theory for spaces. Examples include etale cohomology and etale K-theory. This book gives new and complete proofs of both Thomason's descent theorem for Bott periodic K-theory and the Nisnevich descent theorem. In doing so, it exposes most of the major ideas of the homotopy theory of presheaves of spectra, and generalized etale homology theories in particular. The treatment includes, for the purpose of adequately dealing with cup product structures, a development of stable homotopy theory for n-fold spectra, which is then promoted to the level of presheaves of n-fold spectra.

This book should be of interest to all researchers working in fields related to algebraic K-theory. The techniques presented here are essentially combinatorial, and hence algebraic. An extensive background in traditional stable homotopy theory is not assumed.

A Study of Braids (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 1999): Kunio Murasugi, B. Kurpita A Study of Braids (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 1999)
Kunio Murasugi, B. Kurpita
R1,569 Discovery Miles 15 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In Chapter 6, we describe the concept of braid equivalence from the topological point of view. This will lead us to a new concept braid homotopy that is discussed fully in the next chapter. As just mentioned, in Chapter 7, we shall discuss the difference between braid equivalence and braid homotopy. Also in this chapter, we define a homotopy braid invariant that turns out to be the so-called Milnor number. Chapter 8 is a quick review of knot theory, including Alexander's theorem. While, Chapters 9 is devoted to Markov's theorem, which allows the application of this theory to other fields. This was one of the motivations Artin had in mind when he began studying braid theory. In Chapter 10, we discuss the primary applications of braid theory to knot theory, including the introduction of the most important invariants of knot theory, the Alexander polynomial and the Jones polynomial. In Chapter 11, motivated by Dirac's string problem, the ordinary braid group is generalized to the braid groups of various surfaces. We discuss these groups from an intuitive and diagrammatic point of view. In the last short chapter 12, we present without proof one theorem, due to Gorin and Lin [GoL] , that is a surprising application of braid theory to the theory of algebraic equations.

Strong Shape and Homology (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2000): Sibe Mardesic Strong Shape and Homology (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2000)
Sibe Mardesic
R3,010 Discovery Miles 30 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Shape theory is an extension of homotopy theory from the realm of CW-complexes to arbitrary spaces. Besides applications in topology, it has interesting applications in various other areas of mathematics, especially in dynamical systems and C*-algebras. Strong shape is a refinement of ordinary shape with distinct advantages over the latter. Strong homology generalizes Steenrod homology and is an invariant of strong shape. The book gives a detailed account based on approximation of spaces by polyhedra (ANR's) using the technique of inverse systems. It is intended for researchers and graduate students. Special care is devoted to motivation and bibliographic notes.

Topology as a subject, in our opinion, plays a central role in university education. It is not really possible to design courses in differential geometry, mathematical analysis, differential equations, mechanics, functional analysis that correspond to the temporary state of these disciplines without involving topological concepts. Therefore, it is essential to acquaint students with topo logical research methods already in the first university courses. This textbook is one possible version of an introductory course in topo logy and elements of differential geometry, and it absolutely reflects both the authors' personal preferences and experience as lecturers and researchers. It deals with those areas of topology and geometry that are most closely related to fundamental courses in general mathematics. The educational material leaves a lecturer a free choice in designing his own course or his own seminar. We draw attention to a number of particularities in our book. The first chap ter, according to the authors' intention, should acquaint readers with topolo gical problems and concepts which arise from problems in geometry, analysis, and physics. Here, general topology (Ch. 2) is presented by introducing con structions, for example, related to the concept of quotient spaces, much earlier than various other notions of general topology thus making it possible for students to study important examples of manifolds (two-dimensional surfaces, projective spaces, orbit spaces, etc.) as topological spaces, immediately."

A NATO Advanced Study Institute entitled "Algebraic K-theory and Algebraic Topology" was held at Chateau Lake Louise, Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada from December 12 to December 16 of 1991. This book is the volume of proceedings for this meeting. The papers that appear here are representative of most of the lectures that were given at the conference, and therefore present a "snapshot" of the state ofthe K-theoretic art at the end of 1991. The underlying objective of the meeting was to discuss recent work related to the Lichtenbaum-Quillen complex of conjectures, fro both the algebraic and topological points of view. The papers in this volume deal with a range of topics, including motivic cohomology theories, cyclic homology, intersection homology, higher class field theory, and the former telescope conjecture. This meeting was jointly funded by grants from NATO and the National Science Foun dation in the United States. I would like to take this opportunity to thank these agencies for their support. I would also like to thank the other members of the organizing com mittee, namely Paul Goerss, Bruno Kahn and Chuck Weibel, for their help in making the conference successful. This was the second NATO Advanced Study Institute to be held in this venue; the first was in 1987. The success of both conferences owes much to the professionalism and helpfulness of the administration and staff of Chateau Lake Louise."

Group cohomology has a rich history that goes back a century or more. Its origins are rooted in investigations of group theory and num ber theory, and it grew into an integral component of algebraic topology. In the last thirty years, group cohomology has developed a powerful con nection with finite group representations. Unlike the early applications which were primarily concerned with cohomology in low degrees, the in teractions with representation theory involve cohomology rings and the geometry of spectra over these rings. It is this connection to represen tation theory that we take as our primary motivation for this book. The book consists of two separate pieces. Chronologically, the first part was the computer calculations of the mod-2 cohomology rings of the groups whose orders divide 64. The ideas and the programs for the calculations were developed over the last 10 years. Several new features were added over the course of that time. We had originally planned to include only a brief introduction to the calculations. However, we were persuaded to produce a more substantial text that would include in greater detail the concepts that are the subject of the calculations and are the source of some of the motivating conjectures for the com putations. We have gathered together many of the results and ideas that are the focus of the calculations from throughout the mathematical literature."
