Jean-Jacques Lebel and French Happenings of the 1960s - The Erotics of Revolution (Hardcover): Laurel Jean Fredrickson Jean-Jacques Lebel and French Happenings of the 1960s - The Erotics of Revolution (Hardcover)
Laurel Jean Fredrickson
R3,342 Discovery Miles 33 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Combining a broad overview of Jean-Jacques Lebel’s coming-of-age among Surrealists and his rupture with the movement, Laurel Jean Fredrickson focuses on two landmark happenings in this book: the first, “Funeral of the Thing of Tinguely” (1960), and the most scandalous, “120 Minutes dedicated to the Divine Marquis” (1966). This study illustrates the development and significance of French happenings in relation to cultural and political changes of the 1960s. Research in Lebel’s archives, and others like the Archives nationale d’outre-mer are indispensable in the telling of this extraordinary historical and theoretical narrative. It illuminates sensitive, often veiled dimensions of postwar French society, from torture during the Algerian War, to government censorship, to the sexual politics of nudity in art. This volume shows how Lebel synthesized the lessons of Dada and surrealism and 1960s experimentalism, electrified by political radicalism, to participate in shaping the erotics and forms of revolution in May 1968.

Gabriella Giannachi, Jonah Westerman
R4,488 Discovery Miles 44 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Histories of Performance Documentation traces the many ways in which museums have approached performance works from the 1960s onwards, considering the unique challenges of documenting live events. From hybrid and interactive arts, to games and virtual and mixed reality performance, this collection investigates the burgeoning role of the performative in museum displays. Gabriella Giannachi and Jonah Westerman bring together interviews and essays by leading curators, conservators, artists and scholars from institutions including MoMA, Tate, SFMOMA and the Whitney, to examine a range of interdisciplinary practices that have influenced the field of performance documentation. Chapters build on recent approaches to performance analysis, which argue that it should not focus purely on the live event, and that documentation should not be read solely as a process of retrospection. These ideas create a radical new framework for thinking about the relationship between performance and its documentation-and how this relationship might shape ideas of what constitutes performance in the first place.

Transformative Aesthetics (Hardcover): Erika Fischer-Lichte, Benjamin Wihstutz Transformative Aesthetics (Hardcover)
Erika Fischer-Lichte, Benjamin Wihstutz
R4,915 Discovery Miles 49 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Aesthetic theory in the West has, until now, been dominated by ideas of effect, autonomy, and reception. Transformative Aesthetics uncovers these theories' mutual concern with the transformation of those involved. From artists to spectators, readers, listeners, or audiences, the idea of transformation is one familiar to cultures across the globe. Transformation of the individual is only one part of this aesthetic phenomenon, as contemporary artists are increasingly called upon to have a transformative, sustainable impact on society at large. To this end, Erika Fischer Lichte and Benjamin Wihstutz present a series of fresh perspectives on the discussion of aesthetics, uniting Western theory with that of India, China, Australia, and beyond. Each chapter of Transformative Aesthetics focuses on a different approach to transformation, from the foundations of aesthetics to contemporary theories, breaking new ground to establish a network of thought that spans theatre, performance, art history, cultural studies, and philosophy.

Revival: Japanese Drama and Culture in the 1960s (1988) - The Return of the Gods (Hardcover): D.G. Goodman Revival: Japanese Drama and Culture in the 1960s (1988) - The Return of the Gods (Hardcover)
D.G. Goodman
R4,514 Discovery Miles 45 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This title was first published in 1988: In this book the author has translated five postwar experimental Japanese plays and recreated the artistic, social and spiritual milieu in which they were created. He describes the turning point in Japanese thinking about the nature and limitations of a Western-oriented modern culture, and the creation of "underground" theatres which in which evolved a new mythology of history. Professor Goodman sees these developments as an interplay between personal and political (ie revolutionary) salvation.

Shio Kusaka: one light year (Hardcover): Shio Kusaka Shio Kusaka: one light year (Hardcover)
Shio Kusaka
R962 Discovery Miles 9 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Shio Kusaka’s ceramic vessels articulate poetic connections, creating a cohesive and unique installation. ---------- “It’s a striking effect—some pieces are bowl-shaped, others are cylindrical, a few have slim, sloping necks. Their linear arrangement suggests some kind of progression through time and space.” — Document Journal ----------- While pulling inspiration and techniques from ancient Japanese ceramics as well as from popular culture and everyday life, Kusaka carves new language into her artwork. Employing various types of clay and firing methods, she experiments with line, color, and size to bring fresh life to the medium. This harmonious presentation is created from individual pieces and thematic groupings, resulting in an extraordinary, unified installation to be experienced in the round. Created in close collaboration with the artist and with many detail images, this book provides a deep dive into Kusaka’s incredible work one light year. Published after Kusaka’s hugely successful exhibition at David Zwirner, New York, in 2022, this catalogue studies her singular installation from all angles. A text by Kusaka illuminates her working process and provides unique insight into this particular work.

The Pictures Generation at Hallwalls - Traces of the Body, Gender, and History (Hardcover): Vera Dika The Pictures Generation at Hallwalls - Traces of the Body, Gender, and History (Hardcover)
Vera Dika
R4,629 Discovery Miles 46 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this book, Vera Dika rewrites the story of the Pictures Generation from the perspective of the Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center in Buffalo, NY. Her work is based on interviews with living artists, archival research and personal collections, including films, videotapes and sound recordings. At once aesthetic, cultural and political, this renewed perspective asks new questions and rewrites past assumptions about the artists' work. The legendary members of the East Coast Pictures Generation emerged at Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center in Buffalo in the mid-1970s. These young people had started Hallwalls, an artist-run organization that invited artists from a variety of mediums to show their work. It also featured productions by the founding members themselves: Robert Longo, Charlie Clough, Cindy Sherman, Nancy Dwyer, and Michael Zwack. The works discussed in the volume include performance, video, films, painting, music and literature, and have been chosen because of the way they foreground states of the body in relationship to conditions of their medium. As a distinguishing feature of Hallwalls artists' work, the practice uses these traces to make metaphors on the process of mechanical reproduction itself. The Hallwalls artists' work also gives testament to Buffalo and to New York City, the cities that formed their historical contexts. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, performance studies, film studies, and gender studies.

The Rise of the Victorian Actor (Paperback): Michael Baker The Rise of the Victorian Actor (Paperback)
Michael Baker
R1,103 Discovery Miles 11 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Originally published in 1978. Between 1830 and 1890 the English theatre became recognisably modern. Standards of acting and presentation improved immeasurably, new playwrights emerged, theatres became more comfortable and more intimate and playgoing became a national pastime with all classes. The actor's status rose accordingly. In 1830 he had been little better than a social outcast; by 1880 he had become a member of a skilled, relatively well-paid and respected profession which was attracting new recruits in unprecedented numbers. This is a social history of Victorian actors which seeks to show how wider social attitudes and developments affected the changing status of acting as a profession. Thus the stage's relationship with the professional world and the other arts is dealt with and is followed by an assessment of the moral and religious background which played so decisive a part in contemporary attitudes to actors. The position of actresses in particular is given special consideration. Many non-theatrical sources are used here and there is a survey of salaries and working conditions in the theatre to show how the rising social status of the actor was matched by changes in his theatrical standing. A novel area of study is covered in tracing the changing social composition of the acting profession over the period and in exploring the case-histories of three generations of performers.

Victorian Spectacular Theatre 1850-1910 (Paperback): Michael R. Booth Victorian Spectacular Theatre 1850-1910 (Paperback)
Michael R. Booth
R1,295 Discovery Miles 12 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Originally published in 1981. This study concentrates on one aspect of Victorian theatre production in the second half of the nineteenth century - the spectacular, which came to dominate certain kinds of production during that period. A remarkably consistent style, it was used for a variety of dramatic forms, although surrounded by critical controversy. The book considers the theories and practice of spectacle production as well as the cultural and artistic movements that created the favourable conditions in which spectacle could dominate such large areas of theatre for so many years. It also discusses the growth of spectacle and the taste of the public for it, examining the influence of painting, archaeology, history, and the trend towards realism in stage production. An explanation of the working of spectacle in Shakespeare, pantomime and melodrama is followed by detailed reconstructions of the spectacle productions of Irving's Faust and Beerbohm Tree's King Henry VIII.

Live Art in the UK - Contemporary Performances of Precarity (Hardcover): Maria Chatzichristodoulou Live Art in the UK - Contemporary Performances of Precarity (Hardcover)
Maria Chatzichristodoulou
R2,858 Discovery Miles 28 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Since entering the performance lexicon in the 1970s, the term Live Art has been used to describe a diverse but interrelated array of performance practices and approaches. This volume offers a contextual and critical introduction to the scene of contemporary Live Art in Britain. Focusing on key artists whose prolific body of work has been vital to the development of contemporary practice, this collection studies the landscape of Live Art in the UK today and illuminates its origins, as well as particular concerns and aesthetics. The introduction to the volume situates Live Art in relation to other areas of artistic practice and explores the form as a British phenomenon. It considers questions of cultural specificity, financial and institutional support, and social engagement, by tracing the work and impact of key organizations on the UK scene: the Live Art Development Agency, SPILL Festival of Performance and Compass Live Art. Across three sections, leading scholars offer case studies exploring the practice of key artists Tim Etchells, Marisa Carnesky, Marcia Farquhar, Franko B, Martin O'Brien, Oreet Ashery, David Hoyle, Jordan McKenzie, and Cosey Fanni Tutti.

"Movies are our way of telling God what we think about this world and our place in it. . . . Movies can be many things: escapist experiences, historical artifacts, business ventures, and artistic expressions, to name a few. I'd like to suggest that they can also be prayers." Movies do more than tell a good story. They are expressions of raw emotion, naked vulnerability, and unbridled rage. They often function in the same way as prayers, communicating our deepest longings and joys to a God who hears each and every one. In this captivating book, Filmspotting co-host Josh Larsen brings a critic's unique perspective to how movies function as expressions to God of lament, praise, joy, confession, and more. His clear expertise and passion for the art of film, along with his thoughtful reflections on the nature of prayer, will bring you a better understanding of both. God's omnipresence means that you can find him whether you're sitting on your sofa at home or in the seats at the theater. You can talk to him wherever movies are shown. And when words fail, the perfect film might be just what you need to jump-start your conversations with the Almighty.

Lorien Suarez-Kanerva Coalescing Geometries (Hardcover): Lorien Suarez Kanerva Lorien Suarez-Kanerva Coalescing Geometries (Hardcover)
Lorien Suarez Kanerva
R751 Discovery Miles 7 510 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In 'Coalescing Geometries' the painter expresses a creative response to her environment and an inner sense of the essence of nature's growth force. The designs intricacy with its prismatic color sensibility springs from a love of nature and its patterns. The ethereal and kinetic sensations reflected in 'Coalescing Geometries' reflect the growth patterns found in living forms. These geometries we recognize and know from our sensorial experience of nature in our immediate environment. The geometries found in this monograph are associated with those seen in plant growth, flowers, waves, spirals in shells, pine cones and also in mineral structures such as crystals. While working with geometrical arrangements, she finds the "movement, universal beauty and symmetry inherent to structures stemming from laws of growth. A shared numerical pattern in nature that permeates the arrangement of parts amongst the whole can be seen in the leaves and branches of a tree or the petals of a flower.

Theatres of Architectural Imagination (Hardcover): Lisa Landrum, Sam Ridgway Theatres of Architectural Imagination (Hardcover)
Lisa Landrum, Sam Ridgway
R4,215 Discovery Miles 42 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume explores connections between architecture and theatre, and encourages imagination in the design of buildings and social spaces. Imagination is arguably the architect's most crucial capacity, underpinning memory, invention and compassion. No simple power of the mind, architectural imagination is deeply embodied, social and situational. Its performative potential and holistic scope may be best understood through the model of theatre. Theatres of Architectural Imagination examines the fertile relationship between theatre and architecture with essays, interviews and entr'actes arranged in three sections: Bodies, Settings and (Inter)Actions. Contributions explore a global spectrum of examples and contexts, from ancient Rome and Renaissance Italy to modern Europe, North America, India and Japan. Topics include: the central role of the human body in design; the city as a place of political drama, protest and phenomenal play; and world-making through language, gesture and myth. Chapters also consider sacred and magical functions of theatre in Balinese and Persian settings; eccentric experiments at the Bauhaus and 1970 Osaka World Expo; and ecological action and collective healing amid contemporary climate chaos. Inspired by architect and educator Marco Frascari, the book performs as a Janus-like memory theatre, recalling and projecting the architect's perennial task of reimagining a more meaningful world. This collection will delight and provoke thinkers and makers in theatrical arts and built environment disciplines, especially Architecture, Landscape and Urban Design.

Jeanne McCarthy
R4,775 Discovery Miles 47 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Children's Troupes and the Transformation of English Theater 1509-1608 uncovers the role of the children's companies in transforming perceptions of authorship and publishing, performance, playing spaces, patronage, actor training, and gender politics in the sixteenth century. Jeanne McCarthy challenges entrenched narratives about popular playing in an era of revolutionary changes, revealing the importance of the children's company tradition's connection with many early plays, as well as to the spread of literacy, classicism, and literate ideals of drama, plot, textual fidelity, characterization, and acting in a still largely oral popular culture. By addressing developments from the hyper-literate school tradition, and integrating discussion of the children's troupes into the critical conversation around popular playing practices, McCarthy offers a nuanced account of the play-centered, literary performance tradition that came to define professional theater in this period. Highlighting the significant role of the children's company tradition in sixteenth-century performance culture, this volume offers a bold new narrative of the emergence of the London theater.
