The Evolution of Foreign Banking Institutions in the United States - Developments in International Finance (Hardcover, New):... The Evolution of Foreign Banking Institutions in the United States - Developments in International Finance (Hardcover, New)
Faramarz Damanpour
R2,573 Discovery Miles 25 730 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Professor Damanpour provides a unique insight into international finance and banking. Often books of this nature are either too theoretical or quantitative in nature. This book is a blend of both areas and thus becomes a useful tool . . . . I would recommend this book to anyone involved in international business irrespective of their specialized interest.

"Brian A. Reynolds, Ph.D. Director, Center for International Business National College of Education"

This groundbreaking study analyzes the rapid growth of foreign banking activity in the United States over the course of the past two decades and evaluates the potential impact of this development on United States banking institutions. The author brings together a substantial amount of information and data not previously available in one source to examine both the overall status of foreign banks in the United States and the structural components of international banks and lending institutions. Unlike those who see the influx of foreign banking in strictly negative terms, Damanpour demonstrates some positive aspects of the situation including the contribution of foreign banks to general improvement in the U.S. economy, increased competition in the banking industry, the provision of a flow of capital into U.S. balance of payments capital accounts, and the introduction of innovative techniques and pricing structures.

Damanpour begins by tracing the evolution of foreign banking and the financial goals of key players. He goes on to illustrate the institutional structure of international banking, detailing the types of foreign banking offices that have been established in this country. Subsequent chapters address the legal environment of foreign banking, international financial markets, U.S. international lending institutions, and such issues as the motivation behind international banking market structure and activities of foreign banks and major foreign banking concerns in the United States. The final chapters look at developments in international trade and banking and assess the impact of foreign banks and their future prospects. Written in a style accessible to both students and practitioners, this is an excellent text for courses in international finance, business, and political science programs as well as an important source of background information for members of the banking community concerned with developing appropriate responses to the increased foreign presence on the U.S. banking scene. Numerous tables enhance the text.

As competition increases, the relevance of banks and their share of the entire U.S. financial system is declining. Banks have moved from a majority to a minority position in the financial marketplace. The ultimate success or failure of banks will rest on their ability to relate meaningfully to the consuming public. Banking Redefined explores the major problems and challenges facing the banking industry and their impact on the bank franchise. Banking Redefined begins with a review of the major changes in the banking industry and how certain banks were able to expand their franchises to a SuperRegional level. It discusses risks these banks took in developing the opportunities that played major roles, and how they viewed certain situations - what some banks saw as a threat, others viewed as life saving. Banking Redefined provides an important review of in-depth commentary on the rise of the SuperRegionals, a new picture of this ever changing industry, possibilities of the future and how to make the transition, case studies of best and most notable SuperRegionals, and bank's changing franchises.

When Regulation Was Too Successful- The Sixth Decade of Deposit Insurance - A History of the Troubles of the U.S. Banking Industry in the 1980s and Early l990s (Hardcover, New)
David S. Holland
R2,030 Discovery Miles 20 300 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The savings and loan crisis and the banking troubles of the 1980s and early 1990s were not primarily due to fraud, deregulation, inadequate supervision, overly exuberant lending, abrupt changes in tax policies or a host of other short-term causes. All of these factors certainly exacerbated and, in some cases triggered, the problems of depository institutions. But the underlying fundamental reason for the thrift crisis and banking troubles, argues banking and financial analyst David S. Holland, was a form of excess capacity that resulted from many decades of protection from the rigors of competition and the marketplace. Dr. Holland shows that the protection was due to geographical and product limitations and a deposit insurance system that became focused on the prevention of failures of individual institutions. By 1980, the depository institutions industry was ripe for a severe culling--a culling that legislators and regulators probably could have done little to avoid, although they might have channeled and controlled it better. How the government, the industry, and the public reacted to the culling is an instructive and fascinating study in human nature for all those concerned with banking policy and regulation.

G. Tortella, J. Garcia Ruiz, Jose Luis Garcia Ruiz
R3,303 Discovery Miles 33 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Spanish Money and Banking" provides new insights into recent advances in financial and monetary history and theory, and demonstrates the significance of Spain to modern banking, monetary, and development theory. Using a comparative approach, it brings together a substantial amount of research carried out in Spain and abroad. It also contributes to scholarly debates on aspects of monetary and banking history, topics such as free vs regulated banking, metallic vs fiduciary money, specialized vs universal banking, bank- vs market-led finance, banking repression vs liberalization, the contribution of banking and money to growth, and the role of the state in financial and economic development. It also shows how financial and monetary mismanagement contributed to the decline of Spain in the early modern era, and how the development of the banking sector later on contributed to the first stirrings of development in modern Spain, especially in the 20th century, throwing light as well on the causes of the recent European crisis and the part Spain played in it.

Value at Risk and Bank Capital Management - Risk Adjusted Performances, Capital Management and Capital Allocation Decision... Value at Risk and Bank Capital Management - Risk Adjusted Performances, Capital Management and Capital Allocation Decision Making (Hardcover)
Francesco Saita
R1,859 Discovery Miles 18 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

While the highly technical measurement techniques and methodologies of Value at Risk have attracted huge interest, much less attention has been focused on how Value at Risk and the risk-adjusted performance measures such as RAROC or economic profit/EVA . can be effectively used to improve a bank s decision making processes. Academic books are typically concerned primarily with measurement techniques, and devote only a small section to describing the applications, usually without discussing the problems that changing organizational processes in banks may have on business units behaviour. Practitioners books are often based on a single experience, presenting the approach that has been pursued by a single bank, but often do not adequately evaluate that approach. In actual practice, the choice of how to use Value at Risk and risk-adjusted performance measures has no single optimal solution, but requires effective decision making that can identify the solution that is consistent with the bank s style of management and coordination mechanisms, and often with characteristics of individual business units as well. In this book, Francesco Saita of Bocconi University argues that even though risk measurement techniques have greatly improved in recent years for market, credit and now also operational risk, capital management and capital allocation decisions are far from becoming purely technical and mechanical. On one hand, decisions about capital management must consider handling different capital constraints (e.g. regulatory vs. economic capital ) and face remarkable difficulties in providing a measure of aggregated ] Value at Risk (i.e. a measure that considers the overall value at risk of the bank after diversification across risk types). On the other hand, the aim of using capital more efficiently through capital allocation cannot be achieved only through a sort of centralized asset allocation process, but rather by designing a Value at Risk limit system and a risk-adjusted performance measurement system that are designed to provide the right incentives to individual business units. This connection between sophisticated and cutting edge risk measurement techniques and practical bank decision making about capital management and capital allocation make this book unique and provide readers with a depth of academic and theoretical expertise combined with practical and real-world understanding of bank structure, organizational constraints, and decisionmaking processes.
*Contains concise, expert analysis of the latest technical VaR measures but without the highly mathematical component of other books
*Discusses practical applications of these measures in the real world of banking, focusing on effective decision making for capital management and allocation
*Author is based at Bocconi University in Milan, Italy, one of the foremost institutions for banking in Europe"
