Carol Newsom illuminates the relation between the aesthetic forms of Job and the claims made by its various characters. Her innovative approach makes possible a new understanding of the unity of the book that rejects its dismantling in historical criticism and the flattening of the text that characterises many final form readings. Additionally, she rehabilitates the moral perspectives represented by certain voices of the book that modern critics have treated with disdain.
The foundation for all scholarly study in biblical law is the shared assumption that the Covenant Code, as contained in Exodus 20:23-22:33 is the oldest code of laws in the Hebrew Bible, and that all other laws are later revisions of that code. In A Law Book for the Diaspora, John Van Seters strikes at that foundation. He argues that those laws in the Covenant Code that are similar to Deuteronomy and the Holiness Code are in fact later than both of these, dependent on them as sources, and therefore cannot be taken as the foundation of Hebrew Law. A persuasive presentation of a controversial thesis, A Law Book for the Diaspora will have a dramatic and far-reaching impact on the study of Hebrew Law. No student of the Hebrew Bible can afford to ignore it.

Who is in control? The sustained threat from rogue states,
international terrorism, religious extremists, and moral confusion
arising from liberal views of all kinds begs the question: what is
happening to our world? Is no-one in control? This is a deep
vulnerability that many people express. And not simply in global
events. Our own personal world often seems out of control as we
reel from suffering, family tragedies and unanswered prayers. The
prophet Habakkuk knew that God was in control but, like us, his
personal experience seemed to contradict this and he wrestled with
the tension. This book is a dialogue between the prophet and God.
Habakkuk confronts God with his confusion and, in doing so, he
expresses the voice of the godly in Judah and he speaks for us. We
join in the journey from 'why?' to worship.

The long-awaited commentary by Dieter Luhrmann is now available to
English-speaking audiences for the first time. It is a profound,
succinctly written dialogue with the text that carefully follows
the main points of Paul's arguments in his most controversial
letter. The author presents a theological interpretation which
takes seriously Paul's claims about the gospel and also provides a
distinctive outline based on this close reading of the text. Also
included are helpful discussions of the competing theologies of
Paul and his opponents, a chart on Paul's career, and a map of the
Roman world. Luhrmann is a highly acclaimed interpreter of the New
Testament. This volume will be a valuable addition to a
well-received commentary series.
The Cambridge Companion to the Apostolic Fathers offers an
informative introduction to the extant body of Christian texts that
existed beside and after the New Testament known to us as the
apostolic fathers. Featuring cutting-edge research by leading
scholars, it explores how the early Church expanded and evolved
over the course of the first and second centuries as evidenced by
its textual history. The volume includes thematic essays on
imperial context, the relationship between Christianity and
Judaism, the growth and diversification of the early church,
influences and intertextuality, and female leaders in the early
church. The Companion contains ground-breaking essays on the
individual texts with specific attention given to debates of
authorship, authenticity, dating, and theological texture. The
Companion will serve as an essential resource for instructors and
students of the first two centuries of Christianity.

The Gospel isn't first and foremost about forgiveness. That's
simply how we enter into the hallway of salvation to explore all of
the rooms in the palace. That's why we need these three books of
the Bible. They remind us that God has given us some Promised Land
to take as a result of our salvation. They help us to discover the
God who keeps on giving. God inspired the Bible for a reason. He
wants you read it and let it change your life. If you are willing
to take this challenge seriously, then you will love Phil Moore's
devotional commentaries. Their bite-sized chapters are punchy and
relevant, yet crammed with fascinating scholarship. Welcome to a
new way of reading the Bible. Welcome to the Straight to the Heart
series.

begin or end your day together.
A comparison of the message of Acts transmitted by Codez Bezae with
that of the more familiar Alexandrian text, represented by Codex
Vaticanus. For each section of Acts, there is a side by side
translation of the Bezan and Alexandrian manuscripts, followed by a
critical apparatus and, finally, a commentary that explores the
differences in the message of the two texts. It is concluded that
the Bezan text, with its interest in internal Jewish affairs and
its focus on the struggles of the early disciples to free
themselves from their traditional Jewish expectations and to
achieve, despite their mistakes, a more accurate understanding of
their master's teaching, is the earlier of the two texts. LNTS 302

Bibliography
This book of daily Bible readings and reflections for Advent and
Christmas is based around spiritual insights gleaned from some of
the best-loved poets of the past - T.S. Eliot, George Herbert,
Tennyson and Auden, among others. While they come from different
ages and backgrounds, they wrestled with the same questions that we
do, about God, love, hope, and suffering. This book is not a
literary study of their work, but a quest to see what they can tell
us about life and faith today. Their poems are quoted in short
sections, with suggestions about what they might mean for us now.
There are so many aspects of God's love for us and ours for him
that are hard to grasp. While we can glimpse only part of the
picture, it often seems that, in poetry, our deepest yearnings can
come to the surface. As we travel the road to Christmas in the
company of these great poets, we will find our minds enlarged and
our hearts touched with something of the wonder and joy of this
special season. The Bible readings are drawn from the lectionary.
Presented by an international team of Catholic biblical scholars,
Sacra Pagina is a fresh series of translations and expositions of
the books of the New Testament. The volumes provide basic
information as well as sound, critical analysis in a highly
readable manner -- yet remain sensitive to religious meaning. Each
author has adopted a specific methodology while focusing on the
issues raised by the New Testament compositions themselves. The
expression "Sacra Pagina" ("Sacred Page") refers to the text of
Scripture. In the Middle Ages it also described the study of
Scripture to which the interpreter brought the tools of grammar,
rhetoric, dialectic, and philosophy. Thus, Sacra Pagina encompasses
both the text and the act of interpretation.
The "very soul of sacred theology" (Dei Verbum 24). That's how
the Second Vatican Council described the study of the "sacred
page". These volumes open up the riches of the New Testament and
invite all Christians to study seriously the "sacred page".
What makes this commentary on Luke stand apart from others is
that this is a literary analysis. Because it focuses solely on the
Gospel as it appears and not on its source or origin, this
commentary explores just what Luke is saying and how he says
it.
For hundreds of years Christendom has been blessed with Bible
commentaries written by great men of God highly respected for their
godly walk and their insight into spiritual truth. The Crossway
Classic Commentaries present the very best work on individual Bible
books, carefully adapted for maximum understanding and usefulness
for today's believers. The book of Acts provides an invaluable
transition in the Bible from the life of Christ to the formation
and expansion of the New Testament Church and the inspired
apostolic letters of that era. The birth and spread of the Church,
early struggles in the Body of Christ, and the conversion and later
missionary journeys of Paul make for enlightening and nurturing
reading for all followers of the Lord Jesus Christ. John Calvin's
insightful examination of this action-packed, fast-paced section of
Scripture will give serious Bible students a solid grip on the key
passages and themes of Acts. And that in turn will give believers
renewed enthusiasm and boldness in taking the good news of Christ
to their own time and setting.
There is no easy answer to the meaning of life--even when you
believe in God. The book of Ecclesiastes seeks to answer the
question: "What do people gain from all their labors at which they
toil under the sun?" The book's central character is Qoheleth, who
wants to understand the meaning of life as far as he possibly can
with the tools of his own empirical observation and reason. He
struggles to reconcile the beautiful world that we love and enjoy
with the baffling world of injustice, suffering, and death.
Qoheleth circles around an abyss of nihilism and pessimism. He
lives with unanswered questions. Yet he remains a believer. Old
Testament scholar Christopher J. H. Wright invites you to join
Qoheleth on a journey through wisdom literature from centuries ago,
because the message of Ecclesiastes can be strangely reassuring as
we put our faith to the test in today's post-modern era. There will
be disorienting twists and turns and the occasional complete
impasse as complex topics are discussed, like: The meaning of life
Mysteries of time and injustice Ambiguities of work, politics,
worship, and wealth Hearing the Message of Ecclesiastes won't
answer your questions about the meaning of life, but it will
ultimately help you live in the tension of God's gifts in Genesis
1-2 and the fallen world of Genesis 3--and still go on trusting in
the sovereign goodness of God.
This study claims that Paul uses his personal example as an
explicit literary strategy in 1 Corinthians, Galatians and
Philippians, and as an arguably implicit strategy in 1
Thessalonians and Philemon. He uses his own example to ground and
illustrate his argumentation in a rhetorically sophisticated
manner, often structuring his argument on such a basis. In places a
crisp statement of his own case serves as a thesis statement of the
argument that follows (e.g., Rom. 1.17; Gal. 1.10), while at other
times it serves to summarize the argument and to provide a
transition to the next phase (especially in 1 Corinthians and Gal.
2.15-21). All the while Paul's self-portrayals in his letters serve
not autobiographical or egoistic purposes but pedagogical and
argumentative aims.
In the decade since its original publication, THE EVERYDAY LIFE
BIBLE has sold 1.1 million copies, taking its place as an
invaluable resource on the Word of God. Simultaneously, Joyce
Meyer's renown as one of the world's leading practical Bible
teachers has grown, as she continued to study and teach daily. This
new edition updates Joyce's notes and commentary to reflect the
changes made in the revision of the Amplified Bible which refreshes
the English and refines the amplification for relevance and
clarity. The result is THE EVERYDAY LIFE BIBLE is easier to read
and better than ever to study, understand, and apply to your
everyday life.
A collection of reflections and prayers that celebrate the "God
moments" that populate every day. This small and beautiful book
will allow even the busiest of people to find respite, to reflect,
to be encouraged, and lead into the presence of God. Jennifer Rees
Larcombe blends observation and insight in these delightful and
uplifting reflections.
Rediscovered in modern times, these "non-canonical" gospels,
epistles, and other pieces were excised from the standard Bible by
various church councils in the first four centuries of the
Christian era. Here, among other texts, are writings describing the
girlhood and betrothal of Mary and her life before Christ's birth;
the childhood of Jesus, as described by Peter and Nicodemus; and
the appearance of Christ before the gates of Hell, from whence he
leads Adam and the saints to Paradise.
Translated from the original languages, with 32 illustrations from
ancient paintings and missals, "The Lost Books of the Bible, "
helps give depth to the historical characters of Jesus, Mary, the
apostles, and other figures of the New Testament. Presented without
argument or commentary, these apocryphal texts are fascinating,
often provocative, reading.
An essential resource for the study of biblical history and
theology, this authentic presentation of the "lost" Scriptures can
be enjoyed for its beauty and directness, while also adding to
one's understanding of life in Judea during the first century A.D.
The Book of Revelation can be interpreted as a sage of changing
human consciousness. Robertson follows a spiral path around the
central issues of our time, drawing from Jung's psychology,
neurophysiology, shamanic rituals, and modern mathematics.
Each issue of New Daylight provides four months of daily Bible
readings and comment, with a regular team of contributors drawn
from a range of church backgrounds. New Daylight covers a varied
selection of Old and New Testament passages, biblical themes,
characters and seasonal readings.
