Assessing a Mars Agreement Including Human Settlements (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021): Annette Froehlich Assessing a Mars Agreement Including Human Settlements (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Annette Froehlich
R4,205 Discovery Miles 42 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is dedicated to the nascent discussion of the legal aspects of human exploration and possible settlement of Mars, and provides fresh insights and new ideas in two key areas. The first one revolves around the broader aspects of current space law, such as intellectual property rights in outer space, the legal implications of contact with extra-terrestrial intelligence, legal considerations around the freedom of exploration and use, and the International Space Station agreement as a precedent for Mars. The second one focuses on the creation and management of a new society on Mars, and includes topics such as human reproduction and childbirth, the protection of human rights in privately-funded settlements, legal aspects of a Martian power grid, and criminal justice on the red planet. With multiple national space agencies and commercial enterprises focusing on Mars, it is more than likely that a human presence will be established on the red planet in the coming decades. While the foundation of international space law, laid primarily by the Outer Space Treaty, remains the framework within which humans will engage with Mars, new and unforeseen challenges have arisen, driven particularly by the rapid pace of technological advancement in recent years. To ensure that space law can keep up with these developments, a new scholarly work such as the present one is critical. By bringing together a number of fresh international perspectives on the topic, the book is of interest to all scholars and professionals working in the space field.

Leisure in Later Life (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021): Tania Wiseman Leisure in Later Life (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Tania Wiseman
R3,965 Discovery Miles 39 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book analyses leisure choice as a complex concept, made more complicated in later life than at any other time. The author posits that there are many unanswered questions about the new booming generation of healthy, older people, and this book asks what it is really like to be old at the beginning of the 21st century in the United Kingdom, analysing leisure in older people in the context of the subtle politics of the day to day. Throughout the chapters, the author highlights the often missing depictions of older people who enjoy and enact bold, informed agency as part of their everyday lives. Drawing upon secondary data from the Mass Observation Archive, a social thesis of leisure and ageing emerges that challenges the individualism inherent in 'active ageing.' It is proposed that the idea of 'active ageing' creates complex constraints to leisure as people strive to measure up to cultural expectations. The stories in this book advocate for an appreciation and re-evaluation of passive leisure in later life, and the enjoyment and freedom it can bring. The project is therefore useful to students and researchers of leisure studies, gerontology and sociology of ageing.

Regional Economic Communities and Integration in Southern Africa - Networks of Civil Society Organizations and Alternative... Regional Economic Communities and Integration in Southern Africa - Networks of Civil Society Organizations and Alternative Regionalism (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Leon Mwamba Tshimpaka, Christopher Changwe Nshimbi, Inocent Moyo
R3,493 Discovery Miles 34 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines regional integration in Africa, with a particular focus on the Southern African Development Community (SADC). It argues that the SADC's pursuit of a rationalist and state-centric form of integration for Southern Africa is limited, as it overlooks the contributory role and efficacy of non-state actors, who are relegated to the periphery. The book demonstrates that civil society networks in Southern Africa constitute well-governed, self-organised entities that function just like formal regional arrangements driven by state actors and technocrats. The book amplifies this point by deploying New Institutionalism and the New Regionalism Approach to examine the role and efficacy of non-state actors in building regions from below. The book develops a unique typology that shows how Southern African regional civil society networks adopt strategies, norms and rules to establish an efficient form of alternative integration in the region. Based on a critical analysis of this self-organised regionalism, the book projects the reality that alternative regionalism driven by non-state actors is possible. This book expands the study of regionalism in the SADC, and makes a significant and innovative contribution to the study of contemporary regionalism.

The Rule of Law in Europe - Recent Challenges and Judicial Responses (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021): Maria Elosegui, Alina Miron,... The Rule of Law in Europe - Recent Challenges and Judicial Responses (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Maria Elosegui, Alina Miron, Iulia Motoc
R3,990 Discovery Miles 39 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book discusses the nature of the challenges that have confronted European democracies in recent years. In the past decade, the rule of law in Europe has been put under strain by both external and internal factors. The term "illiberal democracies" is sometimes used to describe the rise of a phenomenon in which the fundamental values of the European legal order, as enshrined in the European Convention of Human Rights and in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, are called into question. The preservation of the independence of the judiciary, of the freedom of expression and the protection of journalists are among the values under threat. But these challenges are also present within the older democracies in which emergency regimes have become more common. As the European Union's sanctions regime shows, striking a balance between security and the rule of law, of which fundamental rights are an intrinsic part, is a constant challenge. Focusing on the European courts' responses to these threats, the book discusses how courts could provide the ultimate line of defense. The acid test of the rule of law might indeed be how it safeguards the judicial guarantees designed to protect core European values beyond the discretion of government.

The Psychology of Autobiographical Memory - History, Theory, Research (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021): Igor Sotgiu The Psychology of Autobiographical Memory - History, Theory, Research (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Igor Sotgiu
R2,998 Discovery Miles 29 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides an overview of the key theoretical and empirical issues relating to autobiographical memory: the extraordinarily complex psychological activity that enables us to retrieve, relive and reappraise our pasts. The first part of the book retraces the genesis and historical development of the psychology of autobiographical memory, from the pioneering contributions of Francis Galton, Victor Henri and Sigmund Freud, to the most recent research in the fields of cognitivism, cognitive science and neuroscience. The author then moves on to two key topics in the contemporary panorama: the content and organisation of autobiographical memory (what we remember from our lives and how we link together specific segments of our personal pasts) and the functions of autobiographical memory (why we remember our pasts). This book will provide a valuable scholarly overview for cognitive psychologists and an authoritative critical introduction to the field for students and scholars from across psychology, philosophy, literary criticism, sociology and law.

Sustainability Rating Agencies vs Credit Rating Agencies - The Battle to Serve the Mainstream Investor (Paperback, 1st ed.... Sustainability Rating Agencies vs Credit Rating Agencies - The Battle to Serve the Mainstream Investor (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Daniel Cash
R4,420 Discovery Miles 44 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book details the difference between the two rating industries, but this difference is converging all the time. The concept of investing in a more responsible and sustainable manner is drawing in some of the world's leading investors and, with it, regulations and policies are developing at the highest levels. However, the market is not getting what it needs to fully submit to the concept of responsible investing. It has called for more to be done from those tasked with injecting information into their processes, and two industries in particular have been identified as being natural partners. It has been suggested that they are on a collision course to serve the mainstream investor, and in this book, that collision course is contextualised, explained, presented, and finally its outcome predicted.

Malcolm MacLachlan, Joanne McVeigh
R3,285 Discovery Miles 32 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume argues for the development of a macro perspective within psychology that more effectively incorporates social structures, systems, policies, and institutions. The book emphasizes how social structures and systems can ultimately promote, or erode, psychological wellbeing. Macropsychology is concerned with "understanding up," or how we can influence the settings and conditions of the society in which we live. Psychology has traditionally been more interested in "understanding down," that is, with the behaviour of individuals and groups; in inter-psychic and intra-psychic and in neurological and biological processes. This volume argues that psychology can more effectively contribute at the macro or societa level, by addressing grand challenges and global goals, using big data, and intervening at the population level.Bringing together social, organizational, cultural, and health psychology research, the book demonstrates a broad range of areas benefitting from a macropsychology perspective, particularly areas integral to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Contributors address the value of macropsychological perspectives in addressing sub-topics such as: Mental health Personality traits and social structure Disability rights Food systems Humanitarian work psychology Macropsychology: A Population Science for Sustainable Development Goals aims to recognise and give impetus to a neglected perspective within psychology, and to inspire a paradigm-widening within the field of psychology, facilitating greater involvement with social justice and human rights.

Molecular Ecology and Conservation Genetics of Neotropical Mammals (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021): Maximiliano Nardelli, Juan... Molecular Ecology and Conservation Genetics of Neotropical Mammals (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Maximiliano Nardelli, Juan Ignacio Tunez
R4,494 Discovery Miles 44 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Although all living beings modify their environment, human beings have acquired the ability to do so on a superlative space-time scale. As a result of industrialization and the use of new technologies, the anthropogenic impact has been increasing in the last centuries, causing reductions in the sizes or the extinction of numerous wild populations. In this sense, from the field of conservation genetics, various efforts have been made in recent decades to provide new knowledge that contributes to the conservation of populations, species, and habitats. In this book, we summarize the concrete contributions of researchers to the conservation of the Neotropical mammals using Molecular Ecology techniques. The book is divided into three major sections. The first section provides an up-to-date review of the conservation status of Neotropical mammals, the applications of the molecular markers in its conservation, and the use of non-invasive and forensic genetic techniques. The second and third sections present, respectively, a series of case studies in various species or taxonomic groups of Neotropical mammals.

Ghost Lives of the Pendatang - Informality and Cosmopolitan Contaminations in Urban Malaysia (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021):... Ghost Lives of the Pendatang - Informality and Cosmopolitan Contaminations in Urban Malaysia (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Parthiban Muniandy
R2,990 Discovery Miles 29 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is an ethnographic study of migrants, refugees and 'temporary' people in Malaysia, incorporating narratives, personal stories, and observations of everyday life in Kuala Lumpur and Georgetown, Penang. Rather than focusing on specific migrant communities or refugee 'camps', the book takes subaltern cosmopolitanism as its central lens to look at how different and diverse communities of non-citizen 'pendatang' (aliens) co-habit, work and live together in Malaysia. Urban centers in Malaysia offer the space for informality that allow stateless and undocumented people to seek out opportunities, while also finding ways to assimilate or even 'disappear' into the fabric of society. The book focuses on the notion of 'contaminations', rather than migration or migrants, to underscore one of the most important findings of the ethnographic study - that migrant life in Malaysia is critically integral, embedded and interwoven into the everyday life in the city - shaping and affecting all aspects of daily life from production and supply chains, food service networks, cultural and religious practices, waste and recycling work, to more intimate and private contexts such as romantic relationships, family life and sex-work. Hybridity, inter-mixing and bastardization are part and parcel of everyday urbanism in KL and Penang - these 'contaminating elements' challenge and disrupt categories of the 'national' and categories such as insider/outsider, national purity, and politically constructed divisions between ethnic and racial groups. The book thus relies upon detailed ethnographic narratives curated over a decade of study, offering students interested in fieldwork research insights into the types of engagements and commitments necessary for helping build the complex, uneasy and destabilizing knowledge that characterizes critical ethnography.

Lipid Metabolism in Tumor Immunity (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021): Yongsheng Li Lipid Metabolism in Tumor Immunity (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Yongsheng Li
R4,224 Discovery Miles 42 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book focuses on lipid metabolism in tumor immunity, covering the application of lipidomics in tumor immunity and all aspects of lipid metabolism in tumor microenvironment. During the progression of tumors, tumor cells and immune cells interact in a dynamic microenvironment. Targeting the immune system has a high potential for treating cancer. However, due to the high heterogeneity of the tumor microenvironment, only a small percentage of patients experience such clinical benefits of tumor immunotherapy. Therefore, understanding the tumor microenvironment is crucial for tumor immunity. Recently, lipid metabolism is an emerging research direction and contributes to cell survival and biofunctions in tumor microenvironment, which is of great interest and significance to be elucidated. This book provides the doctors, researchers, and scientists with a cutting-edge overview of the lipid metabolism and its role in tumor immunity. It also yields benefits for pharmaceutical companies regarding drug discovery.

Applications of Behavior Analysis in Healthcare and Beyond (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021): Alexandros Maragakis, Claudia Drossel,... Applications of Behavior Analysis in Healthcare and Beyond (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Alexandros Maragakis, Claudia Drossel, Thomas J. Waltz
R3,316 Discovery Miles 33 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This timely volume explores the multiple domains where Behavior Analysts can provide meaningful assessment and interventions. Selecting clinical areas in which behavior analysts already are active, chapters will describe unique features of the setting as well as the skills and competencies needed to practice in these areas. While providers of behavior analytic services have substantially increased in number, the field of behavior analysis itself has narrowed. Reimbursement policies and name recognition as a treatment specific to autism have raised concerns that other areas where it is helpful, such as behavioral gerontology or integrated behavioral health, will be de-emphasized. This volume aims to promote workforce development and support broad behavior analytic training, considering the Behavior Analyst Certification Board's 5th edition task list (effective in 2020).
