It was the Belle Epoque, a time before air travel or radio, at the
brink of a revolution in photography and filmmaking, when Burton
Holmes (1870-1958) began a lifelong journey to bring the world
home. From the grand boulevards of Paris to China's Great Wall,
from the construction of the Panama Canal to the 1906 eruption of
Mount Vesuvius, Holmes delighted in finding "the beautiful way
around the world" and made a career of sharing his stories,
colorful photographs, and films with audiences across America. He
coined the term "travelogue" in 1904 to advertise his unique
performance and thrilled audiences with two-hour sets of stories
timed to projections of multihued, hand-painted glass-lantern
slides and some of the first "moving pictures." Paris, Beijing,
Delhi, Dubrovnik, Moscow, Manila, Jakarta, Jerusalem: Burton Holmes
was there. He visited every continent and nearly every country on
the planet, shooting over 30,000 photographs and nearly 500,000
feet of film. This book represents the best of the Holmes archive,
brimming with brilliant color photographs. A rare window onto the
world of 100 years ago, it is also the ultimate inspiration to
strike out on a travel adventure of your own. About the series
Bibliotheca Universalis - Compact cultural companions celebrating
the eclectic TASCHEN universe!

With gorgeous, fresh designs and exclusive bonus short stories from the perspectives of fan-favorite characters Liam, Vida, and Clancy, this collection will delight loyal fans and new readers alike, just in time for the major motion picture starring Amandla Stenberg and Mandy Moore.
As his personal circumstances move in constant flux, Ai Weiwei
remains a cultural magnet. Renowned for his political activism and
social media activity almost as much as for his social
interventions, contemporary approach to the readymade, and
knowledge of Chinese traditional crafts, Ai's fame extends
throughout and beyond the art world. Drawn from TASCHEN's limited
Collector's Edition, this monograph explores each of Ai's career
phases up until his release from Chinese custody. It features
extensive visual material to trace Ai's development from his early
New York days right through to his recent practice. Focus moments
include his international breakthrough in the early 2000s, his
porcelain Sunflower Seeds at the Turbine Hall of the Tate Modern,
his response to the Sichuan earthquake of 2008, and his police
detention in 2011. With behind-the-scenes studio pictures,
production shots, and numerous statements derived from exclusive
interviews with Ai, we gain privileged access to the artist's
process, influences, and importance. The book includes texts from
Uli Sigg, Ai's longtime friend and former Swiss ambassador to China
and Roger M. Buergel, who curated the 2007 documenta and hosted the
artist's Fairytale piece. About the series TASCHEN is 40! Since we
started our work as cultural archaeologists in 1980, TASCHEN has
become synonymous with accessible publishing, helping bookworms
around the world curate their own library of art, anthropology, and
aphrodisia at an unbeatable price. Today we celebrate 40 years of
incredible books by staying true to our company credo. The 40
series presents new editions of some of the stars of our
program-now more compact, friendly in price, and still realized
with the same commitment to impeccable production.

Italian-born Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (1475-1564)
was a tormented, prodigiously talented, and God-fearing Renaissance
man. His manifold achievements in painting, sculpture,
architecture, poetry, and engineering combined body, spirit, and
God into visionary masterpieces that changed art history forever.
Famed biographer Giorgio Vasari considered him the pinnacle of
Renaissance achievement. His peers called him simply "Il Divino"
("the divine one"). This book provides the essential introduction
to Michelangelo with all the awe-inspiring masterpieces and none of
the queues and crowds. With vivid illustration and accessible
texts, we explore the artist's extraordinary figuration and
celebrated style of terribilita (momentous grandeur), which allowed
human and biblical drama to exist in compelling scale and fervor.
Through the power hubs of Renaissance Italy, we take in his major
commissions and phenomenal capacity for compositional schemes,
whether the famous Medici library in Florence, or the extraordinary
500-square-meter ceiling (1508-1512) in the Vatican's Sistine
Chapel. From the towering David to the aching grief and faith of
The Pieta and the vivid drama of the Sistine Chapel's Last
Judgment, this is a succinct, dependable reference to a true giant
of art history and to some of the most famous artworks in the
world. About the series Born back in 1985, the Basic Art Series has

In the mid-1950s, Yves Klein (1928-1962) declared that "a new world
calls for a new man." With his idiosyncratic style and huge
charisma, this bold artist would go on to pursue a brief but
bountiful career, producing more than 1,000 paintings over seven
years in an oeuvre now considered a mainstay of postwar modernism.
Klein made his name above all with his large monochrome canvases in
his own patented hue of blue. International Klein Blue (IKB),
composed of pure pigment and binding medium, is at once rich and
luminous, evocative and decorative, and was conceived by Klein as a
means of evoking the immateriality and infinitude of the world. The
works of this "Blue Revolution" seem to draw us into another
dimension, as if hypnotized by a perfect summer sky. Klein was also
renowned for his deployment of "living brushes," in which naked
women, daubed in International Klein Blue, would make imprints of
their bodies on large sheets of paper. This Basic Art introduction
presents key Klein works to introduce an artist who was at once a
showman, inventor, and pioneer of performance art. With page after
page of the ever-alluring International Klein Blue, it is both an
essential guide to a modern art master and a meditation on the
unique effects of a single color. About the series Born back in
1985, the Basic Art Series has evolved into the best-selling art
book collection ever published. Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Art
series features: a detailed chronological summary of the life and
oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical
importance a concise biography approximately 100 illustrations with
