The Political Economy of Mexican Oil (Hardcover): Laura Randall The Political Economy of Mexican Oil (Hardcover)
Laura Randall
R2,787 Discovery Miles 27 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This work follows upon the author's previous volume, The Political Economy of Venezuelan Oil, and investigates the general workings of the Mexican oil industry in relationship to the economics and politics of Mexico. Specifically the author examines Mexico's state-run oil concern, PEMEX, and the costs and benefits of Mexican oil policy--for the nation as a whole and for special groups. Using in-depth interviews and extensive data from PEMEX and other sources, Randall explores issues such as PEMEX's relationships with workers and the oil union, with suppliers of capital goods and services, with the regions in which oil is produced, and with specific groups of oil consumers. Given the critical and negative publicity PEMEX has received over its lifetime, Randall also seeks to answer questions regarding the extent of corruption, overstaffing, and lax management within PEMEX, which she finds to be less than is often alleged. Students of energy and development economics will find Randall's study an important contribution to the literature of Latin American economic policy. In addition to examining the internal workings of PEMEX, Randall describes and analyzes measures taken to correct earlier abuses and to increase efficiency. She reveals the intricate relationships among Mexican oil production, OPEC, the United States, and other nations, and explores the contradictory aspects of Mexican economic and oil policies that inhibit the ability of the oil industry to reach official goals. Throughout, Randall traces the transformation of PEMEX from a nationalized industry that mainly produced crude oil for export to one that has expanded to include refined products and petrochemicals. As a result of this expansion, Randall demonstrates, PEMEX has had a major impact both on the market for labor and capital goods and on the regions in which it operates. Her conclusions regarding the current and future prospects for PEMEX have important implications for the study of economic and energy development throughout the Third World.

Western European Integration - Implications for U.S. Policy and Strategy (Hardcover, New): Michael J. Collins Western European Integration - Implications for U.S. Policy and Strategy (Hardcover, New)
Michael J. Collins
R2,195 Discovery Miles 21 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Startling changes are taking place in Western Europe; this study argues that the U.S. strategic response should be no less dramatic. Michael J. Collins describes a creation of a new type of political organization--a new way for nations to integrate themselves politically in Western Europe--and contends that this new model is dynamic enough to rival older historical paradigms. Western Europeans are making massive changes in their international arrangements, with each other and the outside world, to permit a natural evolution of national cultures along with the development of an intra-European culture. This changing political and economic situation in Europe has already affected the way the United States looks at the world diplomatically, and it may soon alter the general thrust of U.S. military strategy with regard to NATO. Europeans and Americans alike are questioning how much longer a united Europe can expect American troops to defend them against the Soviet Union, now that the Cold War era has ended. U.S. military strategy must change because the world is changing, and the increasing power of Western Europe is a major factor in the equation.

Collins concludes that the Common Market Countries can no longer be understood as a simple collection of nation-states joined in a cartel or economic alliance, calling for a change in U.S. foreign policy and strategy. Chapter 1 describes the developments in Western Europe since World War II. Chapters 2 and 3 discuss how the new Western European alliance interacts along both military and political lines. Chapter Four describes the character of Western Europe and the replacement of the nation-state concept with a new flexibility in dealing with each other and the surrender of sovereignty by the constituent states in limited but decisive areas. The final two chapters suggest possible policy and strategic responses by the United States. A chapter on strategic implications is bound to be controversial, particularly to traditional military strategists. These thought-provoking analyses and policy implementations will interest scholars and students of European History and Politics, Comparative Politics, United States Foreign Policy and Defense, as well as government policy makers and decision makers in international business.

Transitions from Authoritarianism - The Role of the Bureaucracy (Hardcover, New): Randall Baker Transitions from Authoritarianism - The Role of the Bureaucracy (Hardcover, New)
Randall Baker
R2,798 Discovery Miles 27 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Baker and his colleagues provide a blend of the theoretical and the empirical evidence in an examination of the nature of bureaucracy under non-democratic, authoritarian forms of government, whether on the right, as in Portugal, or the left, as in Bulgaria. In all these instances, the bureaucracy was constructed to serve the distorted interests of centralized, unaccountable power. Following the remarkable spread of democracy in the seventies in Iberia, the eighties in much of Latin America, parts of Asia and Africa, and the nineties in the former USSR and the Warsaw Pact countries, the main focus was on reforming the economy and the political institutions.

Distinguished scholars concentrate on the inherited bureaucracy--the arm of government with which the people most often have to deal. They highlight the undemocratic, and sometimes antidemocratic, nature of the civil service that is supposed to serve democracy. Others consider the nature of reform as experienced, and as needed, why there is no major policy for real reform of the bureaucracy in many countries, and the similar experience of reforming from the left and the right. Contributors discuss specific experiences as case studies and examine the more general question of what lessons can be learned from this unique perspective into comparative public administration reform. Essential reading for scholars, students, policy makers, and others involved with comparative government and public administration.

Campaign '96 - A Functional Analysis of Acclaiming, Attacking, and Defending (Hardcover, New): William L. Benoit, Joseph R... Campaign '96 - A Functional Analysis of Acclaiming, Attacking, and Defending (Hardcover, New)
William L. Benoit, Joseph R Blaney, P.M. Pier
R2,798 Discovery Miles 27 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Benoit, Blaney, and Pier apply the functional theory of political campaign discourse to the 1996 presidential campaign. When a citizen casts a vote, he or she makes a decision about which candidate is preferable. There are only three types of rhetorical strategies for persuading voters to believe a candidate is the better choice: acclaiming or self-praise, attacking or criticizing an opponent, and defending or responding to attacks. As they illustrate, acclaims, if accepted by the audience, make the candidate appear better. Attacks can make the opponent seem worse, improving the source's apparent preferability. If attacked, a candidate can attempt to restore-or prevent-lost credibility by defending against that attack. As Benoit, Blaney, and Pier point out, the functional theory of political communication is relatively new, and their book illustrates it with a detailed analysis of the most recent presidential campaign. One of the major strengths of the study is the variety of message forms examined: television spots, debates, talk radio appearances, keynote speeches, acceptance speeches, speeches by spouses, radio addresses, and free television time remarks. It also examines all three parts of the campaign-primary, nominating conventions, and general campaign. This comprehensive analysis of the '96 presidential campaign will be of considerable use to students, scholars, and other researchers dealing with contemporary American electioneering.

Political Elites in the Transatlantic Crisis (Hardcover): H. Best, J Higley Political Elites in the Transatlantic Crisis (Hardcover)
H. Best, J Higley

Leading scholars of elites analyze how elites have responded to the crisis, are altered by it and what this 'hour of elites' means for democracy.

Water Resource Management - A Comparative Perspective (Hardcover, New): Dhirendra K. Vajpeyi Water Resource Management - A Comparative Perspective (Hardcover, New)
Dhirendra K. Vajpeyi
R2,770 Discovery Miles 27 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

According to available estimates, only .3% of the total fresh water is usable for the world's entire human and animal populations. Some experts have observed that in the near future, the earth will face severe scarcity of water, resulting in an insufficient amount of water to sustain our ever increasing future needs. Others believe that such pessimistic estimates are unwarranted.

Due to conflicting opinions and data-interpretations, the future levels of scarcity are difficult to accurately forecast. One fact, however, is above controversy: water resources are not evenly distributed. The world's 38 poorest countries are located near areas that lack ample water supplies. Even some areas, which seem to possess sufficient supplies, suffer zonal or regional shortages. In recent years there has been an increasing realization not only of the importance of water as a key factor for sustainable development, but also the impending strategies for water in the near future. The chapters in this collection examine this critical resource and the policies being pursued to meet the challenge of decreasing access to usable water by selected countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe. A major study for students, researchers, and policymakers involved with environmental and development issues.

Foreign Policy of the Republic of China on Taiwan - An Unorthodox Approach (Hardcover, New): Yu San Wang Foreign Policy of the Republic of China on Taiwan - An Unorthodox Approach (Hardcover, New)
Yu San Wang
R2,776 Discovery Miles 27 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume represents the first major scholarly study of the foreign policy of the Republic of China (ROC) on Taiwan since its government seat was moved to Taipei in 1949. Written by nine prominent scholars from the United States, the ROC, and Canada, the book examines in detail the history and current reality of the ROC's relations with its Asian neighbors, the United States, Western Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and Canada. The contributors demonstrate that Taiwan's economic success, political democratization, and social stability have enabled it to effectively utilize unorthodox diplomacy to break its international isolation and play an increasingly active role in the international arena. An important contribution to the international relations literature, this volume is an ideal supplemental text for both general courses in international diplomacy and those specifically focused on Asian politics.

Following an introductory chapter that describes the foundation of the ROC's foreign policy, each chapter analyzes a particular area of Taipei's foreign relations. The contributors pay particular attention to Taiwan's use of scarce resources to deal with both military and diplomatic threats from the People's Republic of China and its own relatively isolated position on the international scene. Through the use of its developing economic power, the contributors show, Taiwan has been able to employ a flexible foreign policy that effectively serves its national interests. The use of this economic diplomacy has enabled the tiny country not only to survive in the face of the threats posed by its much larger neighbor but also to prosper and become an international economic force in its own right. In the final chapter, editor Yu San Wang suggests a program for the peaceful reunification of mainland China and Taiwan. A bibliography is included to aid readers who wish to pursue further research on Taiwan's foreign policy.

Municipal Power and Population Decline in Japan - Goki-Shichido and Regional Variations (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Fumie Kumagai Municipal Power and Population Decline in Japan - Goki-Shichido and Regional Variations (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Fumie Kumagai
R2,911 Discovery Miles 29 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides an insightful sociological study of the declining Japanese population, using statistical analysis to establish the significance of municipal power using demographic data on national, regional, prefectural and municipal levels. Penned by one of Japan's eminent sociologists, it provides a quantitative characterization of population decline in Japan with a focus on regional variation, and identifies the principal explanatory factors through GPI statistical software tools such as G-census and EvaCva, within a historical perspective. Furthermore, it offers a qualitative assessment of what constitutes 'municipal power' as this relates to regional/local revitalization as a means of addressing municipal population decline. Using Goki-Shichido as a theoretical framework, this book pays special attention to municipal variations within the same prefecture, presenting a completely unique approach. In combining these two dimensions of analyses, the book successfully reveals the impact of municipal power and socio-cultural identity of social capital in the region, from both quantitative and qualitative perspectives at the municipal level. Demography issues in Japan have been receiving increasing attention among researchers given the growing number of declining populations in developed countries, in tandem with rapid aging and low fertility trends. Providing an original and unique contribution to regional population analysis in the fields of regional demography, historical demography and regional population policy, this book shows that the revitalization of the community is vital if Japan is to increase its population, so as to renew a community 'raison d'etre'. The book is of interest to scholars of Asian studies more broadly, and to sociologists, demographers, and policymakers interested in population studies, specifically. "Providing an informative and vivid overview of the demographic situation of Japan, the author offers excellent suggestions for effective regional policy in confronting a shrinking society. This book presents a unique analysis of the regional variations on small municipal levels, with demographic variables, social indicators and historical identities. An original contribution to regional population analysis in the fields of regional population policy, regional demography and historical demography." - Toshihiko Hara, Professor Emeritus, Sapporo City University

The Logic of Charity - Great Expectations in Hard Times (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015): Beth Breeze, J. Mohan The Logic of Charity - Great Expectations in Hard Times (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015)
Beth Breeze, J. Mohan
R1,870 Discovery Miles 18 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What is charity? How does it operate, who does it benefit and what should we expect it to do? This important book helps to tackle the most common misunderstandings and misconceptions of charitable activity in contemporary British society, especially insofar as these affect the thinking of politicians and policymakers. The authors present and discuss over a dozen studies, including public attitudes to giving, large datasets on the geography and funding patterns of third sector organisations, and interviews with a wide range of donors, charity leaders, fundraisers and philanthropy advisers. This data enables them to explore the logic of charity in terms of the distribution of resources across causes and communities in the UK, and the processes behind philanthropic decision-making, to reveal a picture of charitable activity at odds with widespread assumptions.

Dignity as a Human Right? (Paperback): George P Smith Dignity as a Human Right? (Paperback)
George P Smith
R1,093 Discovery Miles 10 930 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Dignity is seen, commonly, as an ethical obligation owed to human persons. The dimensions of this obligation are subject to wide discussion and defy universal agreement. Dignity is seen, commonly, as an ethical obligation owed to human persons. Dignity as a Human Right? examines dignity within the prism of death, and more particularly, its humane and dignified management. Although there is no domestic or international right to die with dignity, within the right to life should, arguably, be a right to dignity and self-determination especially at its end-stage; for, a powerful interface exists between the right to human dignity and the very right to life, to love and humanity as well as compassion at its conclusion. Legislative efforts--nationally and internationally--have begun to recognize a right to die with dignity when a condition of medical futility exists. There are presently five states and the District of Columbia, together with a judicial interpretation from the Montana Supreme Court, which recognize death assistance for the terminally ill. Internationally, Canada, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Switzerland are seen as leaders in this recognition. The United Nations has played a significant role in framing end-of-life decision making within the ambit of human rights protection. The UN Charter states unequivocally that the dignity and worth of the human person must be protected and safeguarded. Similarly, among other instruments, the Universal Declaration on Human Rights acknowledges that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.

Employment Guarantee Schemes - Job Creation and Policy in Developing Countries and Emerging Markets (Hardcover): M Murray, M.... Employment Guarantee Schemes - Job Creation and Policy in Developing Countries and Emerging Markets (Hardcover)
M Murray, M. Forstater
R2,860 Discovery Miles 28 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Most of the scholarship on the Job Guarantee up to now has been in the context of industrialized nations such as the United States and Australia. Employment Guarantee Schemes directs attention to challenges and opportunities of enacting direct job creation policies in developing countries and BRICS, including China, Ghana, Argentina, and India. This book also investigates how the Job Guarantee might interface with other policy goals, such as environmental sustainability. Eschewing narrow individualistic and economistic approaches, these interdisciplinary, historical, and comparative studies delve deeper into how both unemployment and true full employment can affect community.

Critical Judicial Nominations and Political Change - The Impact of Clarence Thomas (Hardcover, New): Christopher Smith Critical Judicial Nominations and Political Change - The Impact of Clarence Thomas (Hardcover, New)
Christopher Smith
R2,205 Discovery Miles 22 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Smith introduces a new concept, "critical judicial nominations," to advance scholars' understanding of the consequences of the federal nomination process for the Supreme Court and the American political system. The study suggests that specific events related to the judicial branch, namely "critical judicial nominations," have significant unanticipated consequences for the Supreme Court's role in the political system, as well as for electoral politics. This is demonstrated in illustrative historical examples which, most importantly, include an in-depth case study of the Clarence Thomas nomination and its subsequent ramifications.

Sustainable Development Insights from India - Selected Essays in Honour of Ramprasad Sengupta (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021):... Sustainable Development Insights from India - Selected Essays in Honour of Ramprasad Sengupta (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Purnamita Dasgupta, Anindita Roy Saha, Robin Singhal
R4,271 Discovery Miles 42 710 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume is a collection of essays that provide a comprehensive coverage of multiple aspects of the discourse on environment, development and sustainability. It is designed to bring in a host of perspectives highlighting the synergies and the trade-offs in this debate, showcasing research along with policy implications of putting research into use. The global discussion on sustainability paints the broad canvas for this book. This volume aims to probe some contemporary issues that will help in understanding the sustainability narrative in India. The topics span over a host of questions on energy, environment, natural resources and related constituents of development. The discourse further extends to the role of economic modelling, public policy debates, political intervention, stakeholders' response, community participation and so on. The discussions are often based on empirical support, review of existing literature as well as policy analysis. With an ultimate aim to understand the overall development narrative of the people of India, the discourse takes in its ambit the nuances of resource utilisation, economic growth, COVID-19 impacts, competitiveness and market structures, urbanization, sectoral reforms, environmental hazards, climate change, pollution, natural resource accounting and management to name a few. The book is divided into four sections, namely, The Big Picture: Evolving Perspectives; The Energy Scenario: Dilemmas and Opportunities; Sustainability Cross-Cuts: Developmental Aspects and Externality Empirics: Knowledge and Practice. The first section contains commentaries on the overarching themes of economic growth, development and sustainability. It presents some emerging perspectives on the developmental crisis that has emerged through the environmental lens with additional focus on the need for inclusion of creativity, knowhow, technology and financial resources to achieve the ambitious SDG targets. The second section brings out the dilemmas and opportunities in the energy sector, that has been a key player in discussions of sustainability, especially for India where significant technological advances in conventional forms of energy supply coexists with fairly low levels of per capita energy consumption and energy security is a key challenge. The section on sustainability crosscuts attempts to highlight the problems and processes of mainstreaming the sustainability question into conventional thinking through the concepts of a circular economy, green accounting techniques, institutional and governance structures, public policy and inclusive growth, amongst others. The last section presents some empirical studies on environmental externalities, the unaccounted environmental effects of economic production and consumption and finally the behavioural aspects of the stakeholders that are crucial in the larger narrative of sustainable development. This edited volume contains contributions of reputed scholars from various Indian universities, research institutions and professionals from outside academia, who are proven experts in their fields. The link between policy, practice, and well-being of the large vulnerable population of India is the major focus of enquiry that will help researchers, practitioners and policy planners in conducting further research in energy, environment, resource and linked areas of development economics. General readers with an active interest in energy, environment, and economic development are also likely to find this book an interesting read, especially in the times of several environmental challenges facing humankind.

Money - The New Rules of the Game (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Christian Felber Money - The New Rules of the Game (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Christian Felber; Translated by Jacqueline Mathewes
R3,619 Discovery Miles 36 190 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book advocates a holistic reform of the current monetary and financial system dealing with the issues of money creation, central banks, loans, stock markets, tax justice, pension security and the international monetary system - "Bretton Woods II". Its innovative approach presents several alternatives for each cornerstone, in addition to introducing a participatory democratic process whereby sovereign citizens can themselves determine the rules governing the new financial and monetary system. With "democratic money conventions" in each municipality, where the elements of this new money system are discussed and decided on in a participatory manner, and a federal money covenant which then elaborates a template for a referendum about the future "money constitution", a true "sovereign" could progressively convert money from a financial weapon into a democratic tool. The envisaged democratic monetary system, by providing equal opportunities for every member of society to participate in the development of the "new rules of the game", turns money progressively into a public good which increases the freedom for all. The new system furthermore drives the enhancement of constitutional and relational values such as human dignity, solidarity, justice, sustainability, or democracy. Money should serve life and should serve the common good. The "Bank for the Common Good" Project, which was initiated in Austria by the author Christian Felber, represents a practical example of his proposals.

War, Justice and Public Order - England and France in the Later Middle Ages (Hardcover): RIchard W. Kaeuper War, Justice and Public Order - England and France in the Later Middle Ages (Hardcover)
RIchard W. Kaeuper
R6,314 Discovery Miles 63 140 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This is a study of two topics of central importance in late medieval history: the impact of war, and the control of disorder. Making war and making law were the twin goals of the state, and the author examines the effect of the evolution of royal government in England and France. Ranging broadly between 1000 and 1400, he focuses principally on the period c.1290 to c.1360, and compares developments in the two countries in four related areas: the economic and political costs of war; the development of royal justice; the crown's attempt to control private violence; and the relationship between public opinion and government action. He argues that as France suffered near breakdown under repeated English invasions, the authority of the crown became more acceptable to the internal warring factions; whereas the English monarchy, unable to meet the expectations for internal order which arose partly from its own ambitious claims to be `keeper of the peace', had to devolve much of its judicial powers. In these linked problems of war, justice, and public order may lie the origins of English `constitutionalism' and French `absolutism'.

Public Opinion, Public Policy, and Smoking - The Transformation of American Attitudes and Cigarette Use, 1890-2016 (Hardcover):... Public Opinion, Public Policy, and Smoking - The Transformation of American Attitudes and Cigarette Use, 1890-2016 (Hardcover)
Thomas R. Marshall
R2,666 Discovery Miles 26 660 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Public Opinion, Public Policy, and Smoking tracks Americans' changing attitudes about cigarette smoking over the last century. With data from more than five thousand public and privately conducted polls, this book carefully examines how Americans came to understand the health risks of smoking; how the tobacco industry sought to reframe smoking; and how public opinion support for tobacco control affected lawsuits, elections, and public policies. This book tests several well-known linkage models that connect public opinion with public policy. It shows that conventional wisdom about public opinion and tobacco control policy is often mistaken. This book offers the first in-depth look at American public opinion and cigarette smoking during the last century.

Business and Governance in South Africa - Racing to the Top? (Hardcover): T. Boerzel, C. Thauer Business and Governance in South Africa - Racing to the Top? (Hardcover)
T. Boerzel, C. Thauer
R2,663 R1,987 Discovery Miles 19 870 Save R676 (25%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Under which conditions do companies engage in the provision of collective goods and services if the state lacks the capacity to do so? To what extent do multinational firms engage in a 'race to the top' fostering rather than undermining regulation? The empirical analyses in the individual chapters look at business responses to some of South Africa's most pertinent governance challenges, HIV/AIDS and environmental pollution. The contributors look at firms in four industry sectors: the automotive industry, the mining industry, the food and beverage industry and the textile industry. These four sectors comprise a significant number of foreign as well as local companies, with or without brand name, which cater to different market segments within South Africa, differ in size and are exposed to varying pressure from NGOs and foreign competitors.

X. Yi-Chong
R2,873 Discovery Miles 28 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

China is going nuclear. It is planning to increase its nuclear generation capacity by building two or three nuclear power plants every year for the next ten years, as one step towards meeting its rapidly rising energy demand. Will China be able to expand its nuclear capacity sufficiently and quickly enough to beat the urgent twin challenges it faces -- energy security and climate change? If history is the judge, perhaps not. The Politics of Nuclear Energy in China seeks to provide an answer to this question by examining the forces in China that have shaped its nuclear energy development. It highlights the economic, technical, environmental and, most importantly, political challenges facing nuclear energy development in China.
