The Politicization of Parenthood - Shifting private and public responsibilities in education and child rearing (Hardcover, 2012... The Politicization of Parenthood - Shifting private and public responsibilities in education and child rearing (Hardcover, 2012 ed.)
Martina Richter, Sabine Andresen
R4,047 Discovery Miles 40 470 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

Currently, families are being subjected to increasing public attention. Interest is focussing on their potential strengths and weaknesses in determining how well children do at school. Alongside such human-development oriented expectations, families are also becoming a focus of attention as a resource for human capital in times of economic crises and criticism of the welfare state. In many European countries, parents and children are at the forefront of the welfare state and socio-educational activities in current programs and policies. The current transformation processes in the welfare state are making the relationship between families and the state more dynamic in general, and they are structuring the discourses on the childrearing, education, and child care services in the fields of both public and private responsibility. The introduction of all-day schooling in Germany also has to be viewed in this context. This is gradually changing the traditional half-day structure of German schools and shifting the borders of public and private responsibility on the levels of education, child care, and childrearing institutions. The attention given to parental childrearing and educational responsibility within the context of current national and international debates clearly underlines the fact that issues in private life are increasingly entering the public discourse and becoming subject to attempts at socio-political control. This raises the assumption of an increasing politicization of parenthood in the (post) welfare state that is focusing more and more attention on the structural conditions of gainful employment and child care as well as on the current relations between the genders. This context particularly emphasizes the time and care regimes that decisively determine the practices in daily family life and the utilization of all-day education settings.

At the Centre of Whitehall (Hardcover): J. Lee, G. Jones, J. Burnham At the Centre of Whitehall (Hardcover)
J. Lee, G. Jones, J. Burnham
R2,668 Discovery Miles 26 680 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

This authoritative text examines the arrangements at the centre of Whitehall for advising the British prime minister and Cabinet, especially during the Thatcher and Major governments. The traditional coordinating centre has shifted from the Treasury to the Prime Minister's Office and the Chief Whip's Office in Downing Street, and to the Cabinet Office in Whitehall. Exploration of the separate but interlinking contributions made by these three parts of the centre shows they form a flexible but not entirely adequate support for modern government.

Social Movement to Address Climate Change - Local Steps for Global Action (Hardcover, New): Danielle Endres, Leah Sprain, Tarla... Social Movement to Address Climate Change - Local Steps for Global Action (Hardcover, New)
Danielle Endres, Leah Sprain, Tarla Rai Peterson
R2,966 Discovery Miles 29 660 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

"Deniers of climate change have benefited from political strategies developed by conservative think tanks and public relations experts paid handsomely by the energy industry. With this book, environmental activists can benefit from some scholarly attention turned to their efforts. This book exhibits the best that public scholarship has to offer. Its authors utilize sophisticated rhetorical theory and criticism to uncover the inventional constraints and possibilities for participants at various sites of the Step-It-Up day of climate activism. What makes this book especially valuable is that it is not only directed to fellow communication scholars, but is written in a clear and accessible style to bring the insights of an academic field to a broader public of activists committed to building an environmental social movement." - Prof. Leah Ceccarelli, University of Washington "This is an unusually interesting volume grounded in a sustained and coordinated analysis of the Step It Up campaign. Generating a multifaceted and shared archive for analyzing the SIU campaign on global warming, the volume's multiple authors critically examine intersecting dimensions of the SIU campaign-its persuasive strategies, organizational dynamics, and political practices for everyday citizens-with an eye on implications for enhancing the larger environmental movement. Readers with a practical and theoretical interest in social and political movements will find this book engaging and leavened with heuristic value." - Professor Robert L. Ivie, Indiana University, Bloomington

Public Policy and the Quality of Life - Market Incentives versus Government Planning (Hardcover, New): Randall G. Holcombe Public Policy and the Quality of Life - Market Incentives versus Government Planning (Hardcover, New)
Randall G. Holcombe
R2,555 Discovery Miles 25 550 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

This volume argues that the virtues of the market system, private property, and freedom of exchange can be applied to enhance the quality of life. Although people recognize in the abstract that markets work better than government in allocating resources, government's presence in the economy increases as government intervenes to deal with different problems. This book shows how the market mechanism that has enhanced material well-being is better suited than government planning to improve the quality of life. After examining general principles guiding both market and government allocation of resources, the book then examines specific policy issues, including environmental protection, health care, regulation of product quality, and land use planning.

The book first examines the general principles that guide both market and government allocation of resources to show why market mechanisms work better than government planning to enhance the quality of life. Then specific policy issues are examined to provide examples of how market forces can be harnessed to improve the quality of life. Some of those issues are environmental protection, health care, the regulation of product quality, and land use planning.

China's One Belt One Road Initiative (Hardcover): Tai-Wei Lim, Wen Xin Lim, Henry Hing Lee Chan, Katherine Hui-Yi Tseng China's One Belt One Road Initiative (Hardcover)
Tai-Wei Lim, Wen Xin Lim, Henry Hing Lee Chan, Katherine Hui-Yi Tseng
R3,098 Discovery Miles 30 980 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

Chinese President Xi Jinping launched the Silk Road Economic Belt component of the One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative at Kazakhstan in 2013. OBOR is a development strategy and framework that focuses on connectivity and cooperation among countries primarily in Eurasia. It consists of two main components, the land-based 'Silk Road Economic Belt' (SREB) and ocean-going 'Maritime Silk Road' (MSR). This book studies the equilibrium or balance between overland and maritime trade routes of OBOR.This book has two major sections. The interpretive section examines contemporary media narratives related to the OBOR initiative and how contemporary commentators appropriate narratives about historical events related to the maritime Silk Road to interpret current policy agendas and legitimize diplomatic or economic exchanges. In terms of institutional studies, the chapters related to Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) will look at the issues facing the Bank in its quest in forming a new world platform for multilateral development financing. The other section, the empirical case study of the publication highlights the fact that Euro-China High Speed Rail (HSR) and Central Asia-China HSR are not viable at the moment as passenger volume is not sufficient to justify the HSR line. This section examines the overland route of the OBOR and looks at recent Chinese HSR history and conventional sub-high speed rail technology development, and identifies technical & economic criteria determining the appropriate technology for a certain line. The chapter in this section will use the developed criteria to analyze the various rail linkage projects currently under study in the OBOR framework, highlight the economic, bureaucratic and geo-political challenges that these projects likely face and lay down conditions that will determine the outcome of these projects.

America Our Great But Ailing Nation (Hardcover): Raymond Barbera America Our Great But Ailing Nation (Hardcover)
Raymond Barbera
R769 Discovery Miles 7 690 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

This work is written from the perspective of a very concerned American. It can be described as a look at where America was, where she is now and where she is headed. In this book, the author considers the courage, values, and citizenship of past generations and applies them as resources to be used to help mend our great but critically ill nation. In the course of this work, numerous problems and challenges confronting America are identified. Throughout the book many common sense solutions are offered. Those solutions should go a long way to righting America's course if our citizens are willing to acknowledge the serious challenges we face, and are willing to make adjustments, commitments, and the necessary sacrifices to stop the slide into a cultural and moral abyss.

Energy Victory - Winning the War on Terror by Breaking Free of Oil (Hardcover, New): Robert Zubrin Energy Victory - Winning the War on Terror by Breaking Free of Oil (Hardcover, New)
Robert Zubrin
R526 Discovery Miles 5 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this compelling argument for a new direction in US energy policy, the author lays out a bold plan for breaking the economic stranglehold that the OPEC oil cartel has on the country and the world. It is suggested that the US relationship with OPEC has resulted in the looting of the American economy, corruption of the political system and has helped fund terrorist units dedicated to the destruction of the US. The book offers an exciting vision for a dynamic new energy policy which will not only help safeguard US security in the future but will also provide solutions for global warming and Third World development.

Illegal, Alien, or Immigrant - The Politics of Immigration Reform (Hardcover): Lina Newton Illegal, Alien, or Immigrant - The Politics of Immigration Reform (Hardcover)
Lina Newton
R2,850 Discovery Miles 28 500 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

While the United States cherishes its identity as a nation of immigrants, the countryas immigration policies are historically characterized by cycles of openness and xenophobia. Outbursts of anti-immigrant sentiment among political leaders and in the broader public are fueled by a debate over who is worthy of being considered for full incorporation into the nation, and who is incapable of assimilating and taking on the characteristics and responsibilities associated with being an American.

In Illegal, Alien, or Immigrant, Lina Newton carefully dissects the political debates over contemporary immigration reform. Beginning with a close look at the disputes of the 1980s and 1990s, she reveals how a shift in legislatorsa portrayals of illegal immigrants--from positive to overwhelmingly negative--facilitated the introduction and passing of controversial reforms. Newtonas analysis reveals how rival descriptions of immigrant groups and the flattering or disparaging myths that surround them define, shape, and can ultimately determine fights over immigration policy. Her path-breaking findings will shed new light on the current political battles, their likely outcomes, and where to go from here.

Sam Rayburn - A Bio-Bibliography (Hardcover, New edition): Anthony Martin Champagne Sam Rayburn - A Bio-Bibliography (Hardcover, New edition)
Anthony Martin Champagne
R2,295 Discovery Miles 22 950 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

One of the nation's most effective congressional leaders, Sam Rayburn served as Speaker of the House longer than anyone in U.S. history. Although he has been the subject of several biographies and numerous articles, until now no comprehensive analysis of Rayburn has integrated these disparate materials in a single resource. Sam Rayburn: A Bio-Bibliography accomplishes that objective. Designed for scholars interested in the life and historical period of Sam Rayburn, the volume includes a detailed biographical sketch and an extensive annotated bibliography describing the Rayburn resource materials. The bibliographic entries are divided into three parts: works about Rayburn, Rayburn as author, and archival sources. Because Rayburn wrote little, the inclusion of some 80 oral histories by friends and associates of Rayburn is an especially valuable feature for the researcher. Those papers by Rayburn that do exist are included and fully annotated here. The section covering works about Rayburn includes media coverage of the Congressman, interviews with Rayburn's colleagues, and memoirs as well as books and articles about Rayburn. A chronology is included for quick reference to major events in Rayburn's life and a complete index facilitates easy access to the main entries.

Improving public policy for good governance (Paperback, 4th ed): F. Cloete, B. Rabie Improving public policy for good governance (Paperback, 4th ed)
F. Cloete, B. Rabie 1
R768 Discovery Miles 7 680 Ships in 2 - 4 working days

Essentially, good governance is the primary mission of the public sector. Effective policy management is a crucial component of good governance if the desired improvements in society are to be achieved. A thorough understanding of the nature, content, processes and outcomes of public policy is not only imperative for continually improving public sector governance, but also vital for establishing good public management on a daily basis. The fourth edition of Improving public policy for good governance has been updated and revised substantially. It focuses on integrating the functionally specialised agencies of government, business, labour and civil society into a holistic and efficient policy network. This is necessary in an attempt to deal with the complexities of transformational leadership while addressing optimal development and public services delivery in society, amidst an ever advancing digital era that is under increasing resource constraints. This book bridges the theory and practice of public policy by linking them in a user-friendly manner. It explains what public policy is and should be, why and how it is created, and how public policy content, processes, outputs and outcomes can be improved to promote optimal good governance. Furthermore, it shows how to achieve sustainable developmental goals in the information society of the 21st century, particularly in complex developing countries. This edition also contains a new chapter on competing values and the ethics of public policy. Among other issues, it addresses the intractable problems of corruption and nepotism that are endemic to any policy system. Each chapter also includes references to the latest published South African and international resources on various aspects of public policy. Improving public policy for good governance is essential reading material for all students, researchers and practitioners in the field of public policy who require knowledge, insight and/or practical skills in this important field. All contributors are experienced public-policy educators, practitioners and evaluators. Fanie Cloete is Emeritus Professor of Policy Analysis in the Department of Public Management and Governance at the University of Johannesburg, as well as in the School of Public Leadership at Stellenbosch University. He is also a legacy chair of the SA Monitoring and Evaluation Association. Christo de Coning is Professor Extraordinaire in the School for Public Leadership at Stellenbosch University, as well as the Founding Board Member of the Foundation for Sport, Development and Peace, and the Managing Director of the Institute for Sport and Development. Origins of Legislative Sovereignty and the Legislative State - Volume Five, Modern Origins, Developments, and Perspectives against the Background of Machiavellism, Book III: Modern Major Isms (19th-20th Centuries) (Hardcover)
A.London Fell
R2,619 Discovery Miles 26 190 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

This book brings to a culmination in later modern times the long and complicated history of ideas on sovereignty and the state that has occupied previous volumes in this series. The 19th and 20th centuries have witnessed the fruition of the legislative state "par excellence" as well as its companion concept, legislative sovereignty. This book tackles the ideas of numerous writers such as Bentham, Austin, Hegel, Marx, Savigny, Kelsen, Lenin, Bosanquet, Rawls, Hart, to mention a few, along with the views of many leaders like Gladstone, Lloyd George, Napoleon III, Bismarck, Cavour, Hitler, and Mussolini.

The common denominator of legislation is seen to underlie their concepts of sovereignty and the state across a diverse range of isms such as utilitarianism, positivism, idealism, socialism, and nationalism, in the 19th century and in related neo and anti-neo forms in the 20th century. This book's organization and classification of these and other issues is on the whole novel and comprehensive. As various reviewers have indicated, nothing of this magnitude on the subjects at hand has ever before been attempted. Finally, the book brings historical issues together to bear on the shape of sovereignty and the state today and into the future.

Technology and U.S. Competitiveness - An Institutional Focus (Hardcover, New): W.Henry Lambright, Dianne Rahm Technology and U.S. Competitiveness - An Institutional Focus (Hardcover, New)
W.Henry Lambright, Dianne Rahm
R2,554 Discovery Miles 25 540 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

Technology and U.S. global competitiveness is a major concern today, and yet there is no study that surveys the key issues describing federal and state policies in the United States. What new technologies are likely to increase our national productivity and international competitiveness in the future? Editors Lambright and Rahm have gathered together a group of experts to provide varying perspectives and recommendations for students, scholars, experts, and policymakers to consider. The edited collection describes federal and state programs, institutions, and changing policy issues given the new world order of technology and competitiveness. Part I analyzes federal competitiveness policy, the decontrolling of technology transfer, the role of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the emerging role of the Department of Defense in Technology Transfer. Part II covers turbulent state programs in the 1990s, state space technology programs, and basic research and development. Part III deals with recent theoretical and organizational approaches to U.S. technology policy, changing international relations and U.S.-Japanese competitiveness, and corporate culture in small high tech firms.

Intelligence, Political Inequality, and Public Policy (Hardcover, New): Elliott White Intelligence, Political Inequality, and Public Policy (Hardcover, New)
Elliott White
R2,556 Discovery Miles 25 560 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

This timely book deals directly with a topic increasingly in the news and on the minds of policy makers--political inequality. It is no coincidence that the official theme of the 1996 meeting of the American Political Science Association is the issue of political inequality. Drawing together a number of the leading writers on the topic, White provides a full and serious examination of the biological and environmental factors that may be involved.

In looking at these factors, the book opens up new paths of exploration for political science, including the consideration of the role of the pariah variable of intelligence. A major work that researchers and policy makers of both liberal and conservative persuasion will need to confront.

The Imagery of Soviet Foreign Policy and the Collapse of the Russian Empire (Hardcover, New): Christo. Smart The Imagery of Soviet Foreign Policy and the Collapse of the Russian Empire (Hardcover, New)
Christo. Smart
R2,553 Discovery Miles 25 530 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

This study explores how Soviet leaders shaped the image their state cast since the death of Stalin. The fact that the leadership's legitimacy rested upon values and aims that were fundamentally at odds with the international system imposed a cumbersome task of image management. Each leader approached this task with a different strategy, and each strategy had direct consequences for Soviet behavior abroad and for the coherence of the Soviet state at home. The dynamics of foreign policy and image management, from Khrushchev and Brezhnev through Gorbachev and Yeltsin, are analyzed here in a revealing look at a superpower on the world stage.
