R354 R328 Discovery Miles 3 280 Save R26 (7%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Although news of Christians being killed overseas hits major media outlets from time to time, the news quickly fades away while our fellow believers continue to suffer. Johnnie Moore, as he has done before, wants to awaken the church and American politicians to the daily horrors happening to Christians, focusing this time on Africa.

While the world has been fixated on jihadist threats in the Middle East, terrorists from Nigeria to Kenya have had free reign to massacre on a scale far beyond that of the terrorists in Iraq and Syria. Whole villages have been razed, mothers and children have been grotesquely killed, and an unabashed effort at ethnic cleansing has been embarked upon with unrelenting resolve. Their intention is to rid Africa of its Christians, either by forced conversion to Islam or by destruction and murder.

The Hybrid Church in the City - Third Space Thinking (Hardcover): Christopher Richard Baker The Hybrid Church in the City - Third Space Thinking (Hardcover)
Christopher Richard Baker
R4,490 Discovery Miles 44 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The era of post-colonialism and globalisation has brought new intensities of debate concerning the existence of diversity and plurality, and the need to work in partnerships to resolve major problems of injustice and marginalisation now facing local and global communities. The Church is struggling to connect with the significant economic, political and cultural changes impacting on all types of urban context but especially city centres, inner rings and outer estates and the new ex-urban communities being developed beyond the suburbs. This book argues that theology and the church need to engage more seriously with post-modern reality and thought if points of connection (both theologically and pastorally) are going to be created. The author proposes a sustained engagement with a key concept to emerge from post-modern experience - namely the concept of the Third Space. Drawing on case studies from Europe and the USA primarily, this book examines examples of Third Space methodologies to ask questions about hybrid identities and methods churches might adopt to effectively connect with post-modern cities and civil society. Particular areas of focus by the author include: the role and identity of church in post-modern urban space; the role of public theology in addressing key issues of marginalisation and urbanisation as they impact in the 21st century; the nature and role of local civil society as a local response to globalised patterns of urban, economic, social and cultural change.

Marking Short Lives - Constructing and Sharing Rituals Following Pregnancy Loss (Paperback): Ewan Kelly Marking Short Lives - Constructing and Sharing Rituals Following Pregnancy Loss (Paperback)
Ewan Kelly
R1,732 Discovery Miles 17 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores theologically the practice of hospital chaplains seeking to meet the spiritual needs of parents bereaved by baby death in-utero. The lived experience of bereaved parents, gathered through a series of in-depth interviews, informs such an exploration. Parents describe the trauma of late miscarriage and stillbirth as still being shrouded by silence, myth and misunderstanding in contemporary society. Up-to-date theoretical understandings of grief are also re-examined in light of parents' stories of living with baby death. This book offers suggestions as to how the actual spiritual needs of parents may be met and their grief sensitively facilitated through the sharing of rituals co-constructed by parents and chaplain which seek to have theological integrity yet be relevant in our postomodern age. In our prevalent culture of caring, where increasingly ongoing professional and personal development are regarded as normative, recommendations are made which may aid reflection on current, or shape future, practice for chaplains, pastors, students and various healthcare professionals.

The Catholic Church and the Nation-State - Comparative Perspectives (Paperback): Paul Christopher Manuel, Lawrence C. Reardon,... The Catholic Church and the Nation-State - Comparative Perspectives (Paperback)
Paul Christopher Manuel, Lawrence C. Reardon, Clyde Wilcox
R1,271 Discovery Miles 12 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Presenting case studies from sixteen countries on five continents, "The Catholic Church and the Nation-State" paints a rich portrait of a complex and paradoxical institution whose political role has varied historically and geographically. In this integrated and synthetic collection of essays, outstanding scholars from the United States and abroad examine religious, diplomatic, and political actions - both admirable and regrettable - that shape our world. Kenneth R. Himes sets the context of the book by brilliantly describing the political influence of the church in the post-Vatican II era. There are many recent instances, the contributors assert, where the Church has acted as both a moral authority and a self-interested institution: in the United States it maintained unpopular moral positions on issues such as contraception and sexuality, yet at the same time it sought to cover up its own abuses; it was complicit in genocide in Rwanda but played an important role in ending the horrific civil war in Angola; and, it has alternately embraced and suppressed nationalism by acting as the voice of resistance against communism in Poland, whereas in Chile it once supported opposition to Pinochet but now aligns with rightist parties. With an in-depth exploration of the five primary challenges facing the Church - theology and politics, secularization, the transition from serving as a nationalist voice of opposition, questions of justice, and accommodation to sometimes hostile civil authorities - this book will be of interest to scholars and students in religion and politics as well as Catholic Church clergy and laity. By demonstrating how national churches vary considerably in the emphasis of their teachings and in the scope and nature of their political involvement, the analyses presented in this volume engender a deeper understanding of the role of the Roman Catholic Church in the world.

A Theology of Gay and Lesbian Inclusion - Love Letters to the Church (Paperback): Donald G. Hanway A Theology of Gay and Lesbian Inclusion - Love Letters to the Church (Paperback)
Donald G. Hanway
R801 Discovery Miles 8 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Encourage the Church to address the gift of human sexualityhow to view it, how to deal with it, and how it relates to spirituality A Theology of Gay and Lesbian Inclusion: Love Letters to the Church challenges traditional church teachings that brand homosexuality as immoral, using pertinent scripture from the central Gospel to promote a full acceptance of gay and lesbian Christians. This powerful book questions the assumption that gay Christians are morally inferior, presenting testimony from gay men and lesbians about prejudice they've experienced at the hands of the Churchand its straight members. Written as a series of ten letters, the book addresses the strengths and weaknesses of the church and appeals for a new understanding and commitment to the acceptance of its gay members. From the author: The purpose of this book is to equip you, Christian warrior of the Gospel of peace, to stand against those who use the Bible to resist changeeven that change of which our Lord would approve. In one sense, there is nothing revolutionary about this book. It is a book that respects traditionbut only up to a point: that point where tradition has to change, to give way to what the Holy Spirit is showing us in our day of the mind of Christ. And this is not revolutionary, because tradition has had to change before; it is a developing truth, born of the corporate experience of the children of God, and open to our claiming the exercise of our God-given gift of reason. A Theology of Gay and Lesbian Inclusion includes a series of letters that progress from establishing the purpose and credibility of the author, to developing grounding in Scripture and experience, to appealing to the reader to act as an ally of gay and lesbian Christians. The letters include: Dear Christian Believer, which aims for the bull's-eye of the reader's faith Dear Sexual Being, which offers a fresh look at a sensitive topic Dear Confused Church Member, which discusses what gay people are really like Dear Concerned Church Member, which discusses what gay people really want Dear Bible Explorer, which discusses what the Bible really says Dear Person Trying to Do the Right Thing, from being to doing and much more A Theology of Gay and Lesbian Inclusion provides a friendly and informal Biblical rationale for alternatives to traditional church teachings, encouraging the acceptance of gay and lesbian people as fully moral and fully Christian.

Green Witness - Ecology Ethics and the Kingdom of God (Paperback): Laura Ruth Yordy Green Witness - Ecology Ethics and the Kingdom of God (Paperback)
Laura Ruth Yordy
R809 Discovery Miles 8 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

GREEN WITNESS is a work in theological ethics, addressed to theologians and seminarians, but also to clergy and church study groups. Yordy approaches the topic of Christian environmental work not from the perspective of a global crisis that must be solved, but from the perspective of God's promise of the Kingdom. She argues that Christians can and should work for the wholeness of the biophysical environment whether or not their efforts bear immediate visible fruit, because God always welcomes and makes good use of faithful discipleship. This is good news to religious environmentalists who have grown weary of struggling to "make a difference" amid ever-louder announcements of environmental destruction. The eschaton is clearly a realm of interspecies peace, abundance, and diversity, and part of the church's mission is to demonstrate these aspects of God's plan for the world, although only God can and will consummate the Kingdom. LAURA RUTH YORDY is Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Religion at Bridgewater College in Virginia. "Often confronted by the so-called 'environmental crisis, ' many are led to despair that nothing can be done. Drawing on profound theological insights, Laura Yordy helps us see that something can be done because Christ's redemption is sure and good. Hopefully this book will find its way into many congregational discussions of how we can better live as witnesses to God's glorious creation." STANLEY HAUERWAS, Gilbert T. Rowe Professor of Theological Ethics at Duke Divinity School, Duke University "Yordy encourages us to think the meaning of creation in terms of the inbreaking Kingdom of God. With this eschatological reading of our environmental troubles she invites us to a more exacting and merciful discipleship that is patterned on the Trinitarian God who brings all creation into being and sustains it until its final redemption in Christ. Yordy's views will challenge established patterns of thinking, and inspire churches to be more faithful witnesses to the healing presence of God in our world." We should tackle Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and spinal cord injuries. But the ethical choices are tough. In this coherent, engaging book Professor Gareth Jones tackles: * Who designs designer babies? * What is special about the human embryo? * What are the limits of stem cell research? * Should we not merely repair, but enhance?

Celia Deane-Drummond
R1,267 Discovery Miles 12 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Humanity's relationship to nature is central to the work of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, an influential priest and scientist of the twentieth century. Teilhard believed that spiritual development must be viewed alongside material development and that evolutionary theory lies at the heart of humanity's understanding of its place in the world. 'Pierre Teilhard de Chardin on People and Planet' argues that Teilhard's cosmic mysticism and intense interest in both cosmological and evolutionary sciences are highly relevant to current debates about how best to construct a meaningful spirituality. The book offers a critical revision of Teilhard's thought in the light of current debates in evolutionary science, eco-theology and environmental ethics. The essays present fresh interpretations of Teilhard's work and point to the significance of his thought in the contemporary study of science and religion.

Modern Catholic Social Teaching - Commentaries and Interpretations (Paperback): Kenneth R Himes Modern Catholic Social Teaching - Commentaries and Interpretations (Paperback)
Kenneth R Himes
R1,123 Discovery Miles 11 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With an equal emphasis on every word in the title - and with a distinctly American perspective - Himes and his distinguished associate editors and contributors, have assembled the most thorough and authoritative assessment of modern Roman Catholic social teaching to date, likely to remain the touchstone volume for decades. This culmination of many years of effort by twenty stellar scholars has produced a reference work for anyone interested in understanding or studying the key documents that comprise the central corpus of Catholic social teaching. In addition to interrogations of the major documents, this volume provides an understanding of the biblical and philosophical foundations of Catholic social teaching, addresses the doctrinal issues that arise in such a context, and explores the social thought leading up to the "modern" era, generally accepted as beginning in 1891 with the publication of Pope Leo XIII's Rerum Novarum. Finally, there is a review of how Catholic social teaching has been received in the United States, and an informed look at the shortcomings and questions that future generations must address. By any standard, "Modern Catholic Social Teaching" is a remarkable work - intellectually rigorous and deeply faithful, it provides accessible and thought-provoking insights into the heart of a belief tradition that every Catholic will find invaluable.

Apocalypse Now? - Reflections on Faith in a Time of Terror (Paperback, New Ed): Duncan B. Forrester Apocalypse Now? - Reflections on Faith in a Time of Terror (Paperback, New Ed)
Duncan B. Forrester
R1,399 Discovery Miles 13 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

How may people of faith respond wisely, constructively, and courageously to the challenges of a time of terror? How might religious reasons in public debate be a force for reconciliation rather than violence and hatred? In a world in which religious arguments and religious motivations play such a huge public role, there is an urgent responsibility for interpreting what is happening, and engaging with religious views which are commonly regarded as alien, threatening or dangerous. In Apocalypse Now?, Duncan Forrester argues that disorders and atrocities which include the Gulag, the Holocaust, 9/11, the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, and the Tsunami disaster have shown us that we stand not at the end of history but in the midst of an apocalyptic age of terror which has striking similarities to the time in which Christianity was born. Moving between two times of terror - the early Centuries of Christianity, and today - Forrester asks how religious motivations can play a positive role in the midst of conflicts and disasters. Reading the 'signs of the times' to try to understand what is happening in today's age of terror, Forrester argues that there are huge resources in the Christian tradition that can be productively deployed for a more constructive and faithful response. We are at a turning point - this is a book which should be read.

In this informed and enlightening book, Colin Chapman assesses the centrality of Jerusalem in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, tracing its history through the ages and showing how the issues of the past are relevant today. Since 1967, the Israelis have controlled the city and the areas around it, creating new settlements and roads to transform its geography and demography, and provoking intense opposition from the Palestinians. The situation today appears hopeless as the conflict continues violently with Jerusalem at its centre. How, Colin Chapman asks, can the two sides reach agreement over this most holy of cities?

The Invention of Sodomy in Christian Theology (Paperback, New edition): Mark D. Jordan The Invention of Sodomy in Christian Theology (Paperback, New edition)
Mark D. Jordan
R829 Discovery Miles 8 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This text explores the invention of sodomy in medieval Christendom, examining its conceptual foundations in theology and gauging its impact on Christian sexual ethics both then and now. It traces the historical genealogy of this enduring cultural construct through many of the idiosyncratic worldviews of the Middle Ages - worldviews at war with themselves in their attitudes toward sex, love and eroticism. Moving from poetic conceit through medieval treatise to confessor's manual and scholastic summa, the text demonstrates that the medieval notion of sodomy was fashioned out of conceptual instabilities and tensions.

Religious Trauma - Queer Stories in Estrangement and Return (Hardcover): Brooke N Petersen Religious Trauma - Queer Stories in Estrangement and Return (Hardcover)
Brooke N Petersen
R2,855 Discovery Miles 28 550 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Through the rich stories of eight participants, the author explores the psychological, spiritual, and ritual dimensions of religious trauma among queer people. Drawing on current scholarship in the field of trauma studies, the author makes a case for religious trauma as an important frame to understand the experiences of queer people in non-accepting faith communities. Though previous scholarship has limited the recovery from religious trauma to those who exit religious communities, in this research the author analyzes participant stories to understand how queer people might find healing in accepting religious communities. Using self-psychology to understand the depth of trauma experienced in non-accepting communities, the author explores the experience of God and sexual identity within non-accepting communities. Through these narratives, the author demonstrates the potential for post-traumatic growth and life beyond conservative faith communities. Petersen argues for a number of key recommendations for congregations and pastoral caregivers that seek to welcome those who have experienced religious trauma.

The Symbolic Jesus - Historical Scholarship, Judaism and the Construction of Contemporary Identity (Paperback): William E. Arnal The Symbolic Jesus - Historical Scholarship, Judaism and the Construction of Contemporary Identity (Paperback)
William E. Arnal
R1,255 Discovery Miles 12 550 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume addresses the current scholarly controversies that have crupted in the last 20 or so years over the implications of the judaism of Jesus. Since the early 1970s, a number of historical Jesus scholars have claimed that Jesus was a Jew, and that this fact has significant implications for how one reconstructs the figure of Jesus from the portraits in ancient Christian literature. This book explores the anti-Jewish legacy of past scholarship, shows that the Judaism of Jesus is a more complex issue than sometimes acknowledged, and explores the subterranean cultural implications of the recent insistence on the Judaism of Jesus.

Eucharist Shaping and Hebert's Liturgy and Society - Church, Mission and Personhood (Paperback): Andrew Bishop Eucharist Shaping and Hebert's Liturgy and Society - Church, Mission and Personhood (Paperback)
Andrew Bishop
R1,403 Discovery Miles 14 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The contemporary Church of England is wrestling with issues around the relationship between its worship and mission and relating both to wider society. Much of this hinges on an understanding of the nature of the Church. Gabriel Hebert's seminal book Liturgy and Society (1935) took as its subtitle, "The Function of the Church in the Modern World". For many this book inspired engagement with Eucharistic worship, with new patterns emerging, paving the way for further liturgical reform in the second half of the twentieth century. Eucharist Shaping and Hebert's Liturgy and Society re-examines Hebert's work, doing so uniquely in the light of the current dialogue about Church, liturgy and mission. Andrew Bishop argues that Hebert's contribution has been overlooked latterly and that a re-appreciation opens up fruitful ways of thinking and acting, making this book a distinctive contribution to a lively debate. If the options are reaction or novelty, Eucharist Shaping and Hebert's Liturgy and Society shows how Hebert's thinking subtly undermines both.

After the Market - Economics, Moral Agreement and the Churches' Mission (Paperback): Malcolm Brown After the Market - Economics, Moral Agreement and the Churches' Mission (Paperback)
Malcolm Brown
R1,975 Discovery Miles 19 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

How are the churches to say anything useful about the market economy which is so dominant in everybody's life today? Too often, Christian responses have failed to take the moral arguments for markets seriously enough. The market's assertions of liberal individualism and the impossibility of agreement about distributional justice undermine much Christian comment and church practice. Old divisions within Christian ethics offer little help. Liberal theologies share so many foundations with the market that their critique has been muted or incoherent. Yet communitarian theologies, currently in the ascendancy, show little interest in economics and are not alert to the central dilemmas which markets seek to address. The book critiques much of the churches' recent work on economic issues and proposes a renewed theological seriousness for mission in the economy, where the Christian faith might contribute authentically to moral agreement in a plural age.

Economic Theory and Christian Belief (Paperback): Andrew J. C. Britton, P.H. Sedgwick Economic Theory and Christian Belief (Paperback)
Andrew J. C. Britton, P.H. Sedgwick
R2,010 Discovery Miles 20 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Any attempt to use the Bible as a basis for addressing contemporary economic issues needs to recognise the fundamental differences in underlying philosophy between economic theory and Christian belief. Neo-classical economic theory embodies a view of the world and of human nature, derived from the Enlightenment of the eighteenth century, which has become immensely influential in recent times. 'Economic man' is a rational, independent being, set in an environment of scarcity, but able to improve his welfare by transactions in a market economy. This 'anthropology' is explained and examined systematically in this book, following broadly the pattern of an economics textbook, and drawing on some recent work in methodology. In each chapter, a second part presents a contrasting view of the same subject matter drawn from the Bible as interpreted by contemporary scholars. This gives a radically different account of human life and well-being, centred on the community and its relationship with God, in which prosperity, abundance and hope for the future are divine blessings and gifts. Despite the wide gaps between economic theory and Christian belief some points of contact can be made, and there are suggestions as to how a dialogue between them might be conducted.

Life as a Latino in America is complicated. Living between the two worlds of being Latino and American can generate great uncertainty. And the strange mixture of ethnic pride and racial prejudice creates another sort of confusion. Who are you as a Latino? Who are you as an American? What has Christ to say about your dilemma? How can you accept who you are in Christ with joy and confidence? Orlando Crespo has taken his own journey from Puerto Rico to an immigrant neighborhood in Springfield, Massachusetts, and back again to his Latino roots. In this books he helps you to reflect on your own voyage of self-understanding and on what it means to have a mixed heritage from the days of the original Spanish Conquest to the present. His straightforward approach also takes him to what the Bible says about ethnic identity--about a people who were often oppressed by more powerful cultures. He helps you to see how Jesus' own humanity unfolded in the context of a people who were considered to be inferior. Thus Crespo finds both realism and hope in the good news of Jesus. There is more, however, than merely coming to terms with who you are. Crespo also shows how Latinos are called to step out positively in ministry to the world. You can make a positive impact in on the world in racial reconciliation, in bicultural ministry and more because of who God has uniquely made you to be. Here is a book for all Latinos who want to live confidently in Christ.
