Based on real people and events, Rivet Boy blends fact and fiction
to tell the story of one boy's role in the building of the iconic
Forth Rail Bridge-Scotland's greatest man-made wonder-in 1889. When
12-year-old John Nicol gets a job at the Forth Bridge construction
site, he knows it's dangerous. Four boys have already fallen from
the bridge into the Forth below. But John has no choice-with his
father gone, he must provide an income for his family-even if he is
terrified of heights. John finds comfort in the new Carnegie
library, his friend Cora and his squirrel companion, Rusty. But
when he is sent to work in Cain Murdoch's Rivet Gang, John must
find the courage to climb, to face his fears, and to stand up to
his evil boss.
Now you can learn core concepts and applications of foundation
analysis and design with Das/Sivakugan's best-selling PRINCIPLES OF
FOUNDATION ENGINEERING, 9th Edition. Written specifically for
undergraduate civil engineering students by renowned authors in the
field of geotechnical engineering, this outstanding text provides
an ideal balance between today's most current research and
practical field applications. A wealth of worked-out examples and
figures clearly illustrate the work of today's civil engineer,
while timely information and insights help you develop the critical
skills you need to properly apply theories and analysis as you
evaluate soils and foundation design.
Net Zero-Energy Buildings have been the object of numerous studies
in recent years as various countries have set this performance
level as a long-term goal of their energy policies. This book
presents a unique study of 30 NZEBs that have been constructed and
have had their performance measured for at least 12 months. The
study is based upon an international collaborative research
initiated by the International Energy Agency - the Solar Heating
and Cooling Programme (SHC). It is the first book to evaluate
building strategies in houses, educational buildings and offices
that have been demonstrated to work in practice. It examines how
the design challenges of climate and building type have been
addressed, and to what extent the various design approaches have
been successful. This book presents convincing evidence that a
careful re-thinking of conventional design norms can achieve a far
greater performance benefit than is normally feasible. It
identifies 'solution sets? that work at the whole building level
and at the individual building design challenge level for each
climate and building type. In doing so, the book provides guidance
as to how to improve the design by learning from these cases.
Unusually for a book of this type it has examples of buildings in
what are conventionally labeled "hot" and "cold" climates. A simple
process is proposed for the reader to commission the analysis of
their own climate to assess not only the conventional measure of
how hot or cold or humid it is, but also to assess its suitability
to support other NZEB technical challenge solutions sets such as
Daylight or Natural Ventilation or comfort based climate
conditioning.
Structural Studies, Repairs and Maintenance of Heritage
Architecture XVII The importance of retaining the built cultural
heritage cannot be overstated. Rapid development and inappropriate
conservation techniques are threatening many heritage unique sites
in different parts of the world. Selected papers presented at the
17th International Conference on Studies, Repairs and Maintenance
of Heritage Architecture are included in this volume. They address
a series of topics related to the historical aspects and the reuse
of heritage buildings, as well as technical issues on the
structural integrity of different types of buildings, such as those
constructed with materials as varied as iron and steel, concrete,
masonry, wood or earth. Restoration processes require the
appropriate characterisation of those materials, the modes of
construction and the structural behaviour of the building. This
knowledge can be gained through a series of material
characterisation techniques, preferably via non-destructive tests.
Modern computer simulation can provide accurate results
demonstrating the stress state of the building and possible failure
mechanisms affecting its stability. Of particular importance are
studies related to their dynamic and earthquake behaviour aiming to
provide an assessment of the seismic vulnerability of heritage
buildings. Contributions originate from scientists, architects,
engineers and restoration experts from all over the world and deal
with different aspects of heritage buildings, including how to
formulate regulatory policies, to ensure effective ways of
preserving the architectural heritage. Earthquake Resistant
Engineering Structures XIII Papers presented at the 13th
International Conference on Earthquake Resistant Engineering
Structures form this volume and cover basic and applied research in
the various fields of earthquake engineering relevant to the design
of structures. Major earthquakes and associated effects such as
tsunamis continue to stress the need to carry out more research on
those topics. The problems will intensify as population pressure
results in buildings in regions of high seismic vulnerability. A
better understanding of these phenomena is required to design
earthquake resistant structures and to carry out risk assessments
and vulnerability studies. The problem of protecting the built
environment in earthquake-prone regions involves not only the
optimal design and construction of new facilities but also the
upgrading and rehabilitation of existing structures including
heritage buildings. The type of highly specialized retrofitting
employed to protect the built heritage is an important area of
research. The included papers cover such topics as Seismic hazard
and tsunamis; Building performance during earthquakes; Structural
vulnerability; Seismic isolation and energy dissipation; Passive
earthquake protection systems.
In one of the greatest engineering feats of his time, Claudius
Crozet led the completion of Virginia's Blue Ridge Tunnel in 1858.
Two centuries later, the National Historic Civil Engineering
Landmark still proudly stands, but the stories and lives of those
who built it are the true lasting triumph. Irish immigrants fleeing
the Great Hunger poured into America resolute for something to call
their own. They would persevere through life in overcrowded
shanties and years of blasting through rock to see the tunnel to
completion. Prolific author Mary E. Lyons follows three Irish
families in their struggle to build Crozet's famed tunnel and their
American dream.

Modern society too often views water as a convenient vehicle for
disposing of waste and the results are becoming increasingly
apparent. Analysis of freshwater supplies frequently reveals
disturbing levels of pollution, including human waste, heavy metals
and synthetic chemicals, to the detriment of our health, and the
health of entire ecosystems. The Water Crisis examines the roots of
freshwater pollution urbanization, industrialization and intensive
farming supported by case studies from the Rhine and the Great
Lakes. It explores the impact of major pollutants and discusses
methods of prevention. The final section provides a detailed
overview of possible solutions, including soil-based treatment
systems and constructed wetlands. A separate chapter is devoted to
the important issue of groundwater pollution. Practical concise and
accessible, this is ideal for students in environmental studies and
environmental science, biology and geography, and general readers.

Scientific techniques developed in materials science offer
invaluable information to archaeology, art history, and
conservation. A rapidly growing number of innovative methods, as
well as many established techniques, are constantly being improved
and optimized for the analysis of cultural heritage materials. The
result is that on the one hand more complex problems and questions
can be confronted, but on the other hand the required level of
technical competence is widening the existing cultural gap between
scientists and end users, such as archaeologists, museum curators,
art historians, and many managers of cultural heritage who have a
purely humanistic background.
The book is intended as an entry-level introduction to the methods
and rationales of scientific investigation of cultural heritage
materials, with emphasis placed on the analytical strategies, modes
of operation, and resulting information rather than on
technicalities. The extensive and updated reference list should be
a useful starting point for further reading. Students and
researchers from the humanities approaching scientific
investigations should find it useful, as well as scientists
applying familiar techniques and methods to unfamiliar problems
related to cultural heritage.

This handbook is derived from the online reference "Corrosion
Handbook", bringing together the relevant information about
corrosion protection and prevention for steels, one of the most
widely used materials. It provides comprehensive information,
including tabulated data and references, on the corrosion
properties of the following materials: Unalloyed steels and cast
steel, unalloyed cast iron, high-alloy cast iron, high-silicon cast
iron, structural steels with up to 12% chromium, ferritic chromium
steels with more than 12% chromium, ferritic-austenitic steels with
more than 12% chromium, high-alloy multiphase steels,
ferritic/perlitic-martensitic steels, ferritic-austenitic
steels/duplex steels, austenitic chromium-nickel steels, austenitic
chromium-nickel-molybdenum steels, austenitic chromium-nickel
steels with special alloying additions, special iron-based alloys,
and zinc. The following corrosive media are considered: Seawater,
brackish water, industrial waste water, municipal waste water,
drinking water, high-purity water.
Structural engineers are often more interested in spectacular road
and rail bridges with enormous spans than in relatively narrow
footbridges built for modest loads. Local authorities, on the other
hand, see pedestrian and cycle bridges in inner-city or rural
locations as vital connections and important features of the town
or landscape. Designs are often selected on the basis of
architectural competitions. As there are no official guidelines for
the planning of footbridges, the building techniques and
performance of existing bridges are an important source of
information and inspiration for structural engineers, architects
and city or rural planners.
This book contains 85 examples of footbridges built worldwide over
the past three decades and includes open pedestrian and cycle
bridges, utility bridges and skywalks in many different
environments. The collection is arranged according to load bearing
system and span length. There is a brief description of the
location and structural system of each bridge illustrated by
photographs, plans, elevations and in some cases construction
details. It is a treasure trove for bridge builders.

Building energy design is currently going through a period of major
changes. One key factor of this is the adoption of net-zero energy
as a long term goal for new buildings in most developed countries.
To achieve this goal a lot of research is needed to accumulate
knowledge and to utilize it in practical applications. In this
book, accomplished international experts present advanced modeling
techniques as well as in-depth case studies in order to aid
designers in optimally using simulation tools for net-zero energy
building design. The strategies and technologies discussed in this
book are, however, also applicable for the design of energy-plus
buildings. This book was facilitated by International Energy
Agency's Solar Heating and Cooling (SHC) Programs and the Energy in
Buildings and Communities (EBC) Programs through the joint SHC Task
40/EBC Annex 52: Towards Net Zero Energy Solar Buildings R&D
collaboration. After presenting the fundamental concepts, design
strategies, and technologies required to achieve net-zero energy in
buildings, the book discusses different design processes and tools
to support the design of net-zero energy buildings (NZEBs). A
substantial chapter reports on four diverse NZEBs that have been
operating for at least two years. These case studies are extremely
high quality because they all have high resolution measured data
and the authors were intimately involved in all of them from
conception to operating. By comparing the projections made using
the respective design tools with the actual performance data,
successful (and unsuccessful) design techniques and processes,
design and simulation tools, and technologies are identified.
Written by both academics and practitioners (building designers)
and by North Americans as well as Europeans, this book provides a
very broad perspective. It includes a detailed description of
design processes and a list of appropriate tools for each design
phase, plus methods for parametric analysis and mathematical
optimization. It is a guideline for building designers that draws
from both the profound theoretical background and the vast
practical experience of the authors.
