Tall Buildings: A Strategic Design Guide is an authoritative guide to the key issues and considerations associated with planning, creating and living with tall buildings. Thoroughly reworked to reflect industry developments and experiences gained over the last ten years, this second edition imparts the advice and knowledge of more than 20 highly respected industry specialists. Key topics include: urban design and place-making; design, engineering and construction; the role of BIM; construction economics; and the all-important matter of legacy - including the challenges of adaptation and demolition. A greater focus on international examples is also introduced, reflecting the fact that regions such as Asia and the Middle East are now dominating the tall-buildings scene. Our cities have seen considerable change in the 10 years since the first edition of Tall Buildings, and the debate surrounding management of our skylines is an ever growing and sometimes controversial topic. With further densification and population growth predicted this change is set to continue, making it even more important that we understand these technically distinct and potentially beautiful structures.

Many civil engineers leave university with some knowledge of applied mechanics, geology and some soil and rock mechanics but often a limited grounding in geotechnical engineering. A good geotechnical engineer needs to appreciate the balance between theoretical principles, practical experience and the uncertainties present when dealing with the ground in its natural state. The ICE Manual of Geotechnical Engineering is intended to address this need by delivering an authoritative and comprehensive reference providing the core geotechnical engineering principles, practical techniques, and the major questions engineers should keep in mind when dealing with real-world engineering challenges - all within a consistently coherent framework. This volume tackles the principles and provides a solid grounding in the discipline. Furthermore this volume covers assessment of the ground and soil properties and issues.

Integration of Nature and Technology for Smart Cities (Hardcover, 3rd ed. 2016): Anil Ahuja Integration of Nature and Technology for Smart Cities (Hardcover, 3rd ed. 2016)
Anil Ahuja
R4,039 R3,665 Discovery Miles 36 650 Save R374 (9%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is a resumption of the work "Integrated M/E Design: Building Systems Engineering" published by Anil Ahuja in 1997. Together with an international group of authors from the engineering, urban planning, and architecture fields, Mr. Ahuja discussed new trends and paradigms in the smart buildings and smart city sectors and extended the topic of the previous publication from the building to the entire city. A smart, sustainable building is not just about the building itself. There are things happening in the inside of the building and on the outside. A smart building connects the inside with the outside, provides efficiencies on both sides, synchronizes the outside infrastructure with its inside systems, and integrates nature and its occupants in its design. A smart building doesn't just provide technology solutions. It is about constant exchange between the inside and the outside of the building, the contribution of the building to the quality of the entire neighborhood and the rest of the city, how the smart building can connect people in a sharing community, and how technology can be the key to make it happen.

Stress Ribbon and Cable-Supported Pedestrian Bridges considers how slender concrete decks are used in the design of suspension and cable stayed structures. It looks at their characteristic feature - their rigidity, which is mainly given by the tension stiffness of prestressed concrete decking, so much so that movement caused by pedestrians or wind does not register as discomfort by users. Starting with a brief history this book describes structural types, addresses general design criteria, current technology, static and dynamic analysis and discusses the results of the static and dynamic loading tests. Illustrated throughout, Stress Ribbon and Cable-Supported Pedestrian Bridges provides numerous international examples and case studies of outstanding structures. This new edition has been fully updated to bring text in to line with Eurocodes and includes new examples and case studies to showcase the advances in design techniques and testing.

The Great Arc - The Dramatic Tale of How India Was Mapped and Everest Was Named (Paperback, New Ed): John Keay The Great Arc - The Dramatic Tale of How India Was Mapped and Everest Was Named (Paperback, New Ed)
John Keay 2
R334 R219 Discovery Miles 2 190 Save R115 (34%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Great Indian Arc of the Meridian, begun in 1800, was the longest measurement of the earth's surface ever to have been attempted. Its 1600 miles of inch perfect survey took nearly fifty years, cost more lives than most contemporary wars, and involved equations more complex than any in the pre-computer age. Hailed as 'one of the most stupendous works in the history of science', it was also one of the most perilous. Through hill and jungle, flood and fever, an intrepid band of surveyors carried the Arc from the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent up into the frozen wastes of the Himalayas. William Lambton, an endearing genius, had conceived the idea; George Everest, an impossible martinet, completed it. Both found the technical difficulties horrendous. With instruments weighing half a ton, their observations had often to be conducted from flimsy platforms ninety feet above the ground or from mountain peaks enveloped in blizzard. Malaria wiped out whole survey parties; tigers and scorpions also took their toll.

Yet the results were commensurate. The Great Arc made possible the mapping of the entire Indian subcontinent and the development of its roads, railways and telegraphs. India as we now know it was defined in the process. The Arc also resulted in the first accurate measurements of the Himalayas, an achievement which was acknowledged by the naming of the world's highest mountain in honour of Everest. More important still, by producing new values for the curvature of the earth's surface, the Arc significantly advanced our knowledge of the exact shape of our planet.

"More extraordinary than any fiction."
CHARLOTTE CORY, MAIL ON SUNDAY

"A triumph."
ANDREW TAYLOR, LITERARY REVIEW

"This wonderful book – surely Keay's most compelling, and one of the most remarkable works of non-fiction to be published this year – is a fitting monument not just to Everest but also to the Great Arc itself."
WILLIAM DALRYMPLE, SUNDAY TIMES
