Steve McQueen stars in this classic action movie about Frank Bullitt, a San Francisco detective who has become hardened to crime. He is assigned by an over ambitious politician Chalmers (Robert Vaughn) to protect a key Mafia member who is due to appear in hearings that would catapault Chalmers into the public eye. But the safe house is ambushed, his friend is murdered and the witness is critically injured. Bullitt decides to search for the origin of the leak and the killers himself, despite Chalmers trying to interfere and shut down the investigation in a bid to keeping the hearings going. The film features one of cinema's most famous car chases, and expert driver McQueen performs all his own stunts.

In 'Beetlejuice' (1988) Barbara and Adam Maitland (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin) are a happy couple who, when killed in a car crash, return as ghosts to their beloved Connecticut home to wreak havoc on the ghastly Deetz family who have moved in. Being novices at haunting, their efforts go unnoticed by the house's new inhabitants, with the exception of Goth daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder), who doesn't mind one bit. At their wit's end, the ghostly couple call on a despicably disgusting demon named Betelgeuse (MIchael Keaton) for help.

'Corpse Bride' (2005), set in a 19th century European village, follows the story of Victor (voice of Johnny Depp), a young man who is whisked away to the underworld and wed to a mysterious Corpse Bride (Helena Bonham Carter), while his real bride, Victoria (Emily Watson), waits bereft in the land of the living. Though life in the Land of the Dead proves to be a lot more colourful than his strict Victorian upbringing, Victor learns that there is nothing in this world, or the next, that can keep him away from his one true love. 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' (2005) centres around an eccentric chocolatier, Willy Wonka (Depp), and Charlie Bucket (Freddie Highmore), a good-hearted boy from a poor family who lives in the shadow of Wonka's extraordinary factory.

One day Wonka makes a momentous announcement. He will open his famous factory and reveal 'all of its secrets and magic' to five lucky children who find golden tickets hidden inside five randomly selected Wonka chocolate bars. When Charlie finds some money on the snowy street and takes it to the nearest store for a Wonka Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight he finds a golden ticket.

The family decides that Grandpa Joe (David Kelly) should be the one to accompany Charlie on this once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Once inside, Charlie is dazzled by one amazing sight after another. 'Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street' (2007) tells the tale of Benjamin Barker (Depp), a barber who returns to London after spending years in exile for a crime he didn't commit.

He soon discovers from pie-maker Mrs Lovett (Bonham Carter) that, in his absence, his wife has taken her own life and his daughter is now in the care of the man who had him sent away - the dastardly Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman). Seeking revenge and filled with a murderous rage, Barker sets up a barber's shop above Mrs Lovett's premises. Now calling himself Sweeney Todd, Barker kills off all his customers with a razor to the throat and sends their cadavers to the shop below to be used as a tasty new filling for Mrs Lovett's meat pies.

John Ford's adaptation of John Steinbeck's classic novel follows the traumatic journey made by the Joads, a dispossesed Oklahoma family who head towards California to begin a new life. When Tom Joad (Henry Fonda) returns home after being released from prison, he discovers the farmlands have been destroyed by dust storms. Seeking a better future, he leaves with his mother (Jane Darwell) and the rest of the family for California. Their journey is far from easy, however, and there is no guarantee the 'promised land' will provide the life they are hoping for.

Acclaimed drama from director Ken Loach following a young boy from a working-class Northern town who begins training a falcon to find relief from his problems. Billy (David Bradley) appears to have little hope in his life. He is bullied by his brother and neglected by his mother, while his inability to pay attention at school suggests he is destined for a future spent working in the harsh conditions of the local mine. The discovery of a young kestrel falcon is an important event in his life. Caring for and training Kes becomes a positive way for him to express himself and, with the help of his English teacher, Mr Farthing (Colin Welland), Billy even begins reading books on falconry so he can take better care of his pet. Triple bill of classic suspense thrillers from director Alfred Hitchcock. In 'Dial M for Murder' (1954), adapted from the stage play by Frederick Knott, former tennis pro Tony Wendice (Ray Milland) hatches a cunning plot to get rid of his socialite wife, Margot (Grace Kelly), when he discovers that she has been unfaithful. Wendice blackmails a corrupt former schoolmate into murdering her but the fellow bungles the job and Margot, having killed her would-be assailant in self-defence, then finds herself under suspicion of premeditated murder. In 'Strangers On a Train' (1951), based on Patricia Highsmith's novel, tennis star Guy Haines (Farley Granger) meets Bruno Antony (Robert Walker) by chance in a train carriage. After some idle chat in which it transpires that each man has someone in their lives they would like to dispose of, Bruno proposes that he kills Guy's wife, in return for Guy murdering Bruno's father. Guy is appalled, but when his wife is murdered he realises that Bruno is intent on carrying out the 'deal', whether Guy wants to or not. In 'North By Northwest' (1959) advertising executive Roger Thornhill (Cary Grant) is lunching in a restaurant with his mother when he mistakenly answers a page for one George Kaplan. He soon finds himself on the run across the country, being pursued by enemies of the government who are convinced that he is a secret agent. He finds a friend in Eve Kendall (Eve Marie Saint), who helps conceal him during a perilous train journey, but soon discovers she is not all that she seems...

Restored version of the Fritz Lang classic containing an extra 25 minutes of new footage previously thought lost. Lang's acclaimed vision of a 21st century city is widely held to be one of the greatest films of the silent era. In the year 2000, industrialist John Frederson (Alfred Abel) rules over a giant city where the workers exist only as an underclass. They call for rebellion, but their leader Maria (Brigitte Helm) urges them to wait for a mediator. When Frederson kidnaps Maria and replaces her with a robot replica, the workers are incited to revolt.

D. W. Griffith's epic investigation of intolerance across the ages. Set in four distinct historical periods - ancient Babylon, Judea at the time of Christ, France during the build up to the St Bartholomew's Day massacre, and early 20th century America - its huge cast and elaborate sets made it one of the most expensive and ambitious films of its time. Highlights include the scenes of the Babylonian festival and Constance Talmadge's madcap luminous performance as the Mountain Girl.

In Bernardo Bertolucci's controversial adult drama, a middle-aged American (Marlon Brando), whose wife has just committed suicide, meets a young French girl (Maria Schneider) when they both view an apartment in Paris at the same time. They begin a strange, anonymous sexual relationship in the empty apartment, agreeing not to divulge any personal information to each other. Bertolucci and Brando were both nominated for Academy Awards.

Two blaxploitation horror movies. In 'Blacula' (1972), two centuries after having a curse placed on him by Count Dracula in Transylvania, African Prince Mamuwalde (William Marshall) is transported to Los Angeles where he goes on a killer rampage. While he discovers a woman (Vonetta McGee) he believes to be the reincarnation of his late wife, Mamuwalde already has a vampire-hunting doctor (Thalmus Rasulala) on his trail. In 'Scream Blacula Scream' (1973), after his undoing in 'Blacula', Mamuwalde (Marshall) returns from the dead in modern-day Los Angeles. He soon comes up against a voodoo priestess (Pam Grier).

Cult black comedy written and directed by John Waters. Divine portrays Lady Divine, a drag queen who travels around the country with her sideshow 'Cavalcade of Perversions' which showcases all kinds of bizarre fetishes and perverse behaviours. When she tires of her usual routine, she decides to murder all of her paying customers instead of just robbing them. The film follows Divine over the course of a day after she learns of her husband Mr. David (David Lochary)'s affair. She experiences a number of contrasting sexual encounters before finding a lover, named Mink (Mink Stole), who joins Divine on her quest to confront and kill her husband.

Abel Gance writes, directs and stars in this epic silent French drama about Napoleon Bonaparte's early career. The film follows the young Napoleon (Albert Dieudonné/Vladimir Roudenko) as he attends the elite military school Brienne College, joins the French Army, witnesses the French Revolution in 1792 and takes part in the First Italian Campaign, during which time he becomes increasingly influential in French politics and meets his future wife Joséphine (Gina Manès).

A non-threatening alien (Michael Rennie) comes to Earth in 1951 with a message of peace, but he is shot and wounded by nervous troops. His ten-foot robot, Gort, immediately renders all Earth weapons useless while the alien delivers an ultimatum to the world: stop fighting or be destroyed.

Billy Wilder directs and produces this classic film noir starring Kirk Douglas and Jan Sterling. Chuck Tatum (Douglas) is an ambitious journalist formerly of the big city who finds himself working for a small local newspaper in Albuquerque, New Mexico, after being fired from eleven previous jobs. When he hears that a man has become trapped in a cave nearby he seeks out the story with a justification that it has human interest. Realising that this may be the biggest story he's ever going to write, he manipulates the rescue workers into changing their plan so as to prolong the drama for as long as possible. He then finds an unlikely ally in the victim's wife, Lorraine (Sterling), as she reveals she no longer loves her husband and wants to get out of the marriage. As hours turn into days with the rescue attempt failing, Chuck begins to wonder if this time he has gone too far for a story.

F.W. Murnau's silent vampire classic. Count Orlok (Max Schreck) decides to move from his ruined castle to the city of Bremen and hires real estate agent Thomas Hutter (Gustav von Wangenheim) to make the arrangements for him. But Orlok is also the vampire Nosferatu, and when he takes a shine to Hutter's young wife Ellen (Greta Schroder), it seems that the worst is indeed possible. Adapted from Bram Stoker's 'Dracula' (though with character names changed for legal reasons), Murnau's film also features some of the most famous sequences in cinema, including the count's climb up the stairs to Ellen's room, his claw-hand outstretched and his crooked shadow on the wall.

F.W. Murnau's classic silent version of the German folk story. Faust (Gosta Ekmann) is an alchemist and scholar who becomes an unwitting pawn in a wager made between the Devil (Emil Jannings) and the Archangel Michael. The Devil sends a plague upon Faust's village, and Faust manages to find a cure, but only after entering into a terrrible bargain which could see his soul damned forever. The Devil then tempts Faust with eternal youth and the love of the beautiful Gretchen, but the scholar continues to struggle with his fate.

Alfred Hitchcock's most celebrated British thriller, adapted from John Buchan's novel. Richard Hannay (Robert Donat) becomes the victim of mistaken identity when a female corpse is dumped in his flat by a spy ring. He tries to track down the true murderers whilst being pursued by the police, and hooks up with an unwilling accomplice (Madeleine Carroll). Their adventure eventually leads them to a music hall, where the secret of the 39 steps is revealed. Also included is the documentary 'Hitchcock - The Early Years'.
