Billy Wilder directs and produces this classic film noir starring Kirk Douglas and Jan Sterling. Chuck Tatum (Douglas) is an ambitious journalist formerly of the big city who finds himself working for a small local newspaper in Albuquerque, New Mexico, after being fired from eleven previous jobs. When he hears that a man has become trapped in a cave nearby he seeks out the story with a justification that it has human interest. Realising that this may be the biggest story he's ever going to write, he manipulates the rescue workers into changing their plan so as to prolong the drama for as long as possible. He then finds an unlikely ally in the victim's wife, Lorraine (Sterling), as she reveals she no longer loves her husband and wants to get out of the marriage. As hours turn into days with the rescue attempt failing, Chuck begins to wonder if this time he has gone too far for a story.

Michael Caine stars in this epic story of the battle of Rorke's Drift, on January 22nd 1879, where 1,200 British troops found themselves completely outnumbered by irate Zulu warriors in Natal, South Africa. Having already destroyed a very large British garrison, 4,000 Zulu warriors are now on their way to overcome the handful of men stationed at Rorke's Drift. The two lieutenants in charge of the garrison, Jon Chard (Stanley Baker) and Gonville Bromhead (Caine), are at odds with each other, but manage to rally the men together and put up a courageous fight. Only a few of the men survived, eleven receiving the Victoria Cross.

In this Powell/Pressburger production set in World War Two Britain, stuffy ex-soldier Clive Candy (Roger Livesey) recalls his career which began as a dashing officer in the Boer War. As a young man he lost the woman he loved (Deborah Kerr, who plays three roles) to a Prussian officer (Anton Walbrook), whom he fought in a duel only to become lifelong friends with. Candy cannot help but feel that his notions of honour and chivalry are out of place in modern warfare. The film's title comes from 'Evening Standard' cartoonist David Low's satirical comic creation, Colonel Blimp.

Laurence Olivier directs and stars in this classic adaptation of Shakespeare's play about the king who led England to victory in the Battle of Agincourt. The film pays tribute to its origins by opening in a version of the Globe Theatre in 17th century London, where Henry (Olivier) takes to the stage along with a variety of nobles to discuss his plans to stake a claim to the French throne. As the range of Henry's ambitions make themselves known, the theatrical artifice gives way to a more naturalised style and follows Henry as he sets sail from Southampton with his army. Inspired by Henry, the invading English hand the French several defeats, culminating in a triumph against far superior numbers at Agincourt. Shot during WWII, the film was designed to raise morale in the ongoing battle against Nazi Germany and earned Olivier an Academy Award for his 'outstanding achievement' in bringing the film to screen.

Bikers Captain America (Peter Fonda) and Billy (Dennis Hopper, who also directs) set off across America on the proceeds of a cocaine deal. En route to the New Orleans Mardi Gras festival they stop off at a hippy commune, before being arrested in Texas for joining a street parade without a licence. In jail they meet boozy civil rights lawyer George Hanson (Jack Nicholson), who decides to join them on their odyssey. Made on a shoestring budget, 'Easy Rider' was a huge hit upon its release, and this success proved instrumental in persuading the big Hollywood studios to invest in more films from young directors.

In 'Day of Wrath' (1943), set in 17th-century Denmark, elderly pastor Absalon Pedersson (Thorkild Roose) is cursed at the stake by a peasant woman (Anna Svierkier) whom he has tortured into a confession of witchcraft. Soon after, Absalon's young wife Anne (Lisbeth Movin) begins an affair with his son Martin (Preben Ledorff Rye). When Anne tells Absalon of her love for Martin, the old man suffers a fatal heart attack and she too finds herself being faced with accusations of witchcraft. In 'Ordet' (1955), head of the family Peter Borgen (Ejner Federspiel) forbids his younger son Anders (Cay Kristiansen) to marry his girlfriend Anne (Gerda Nielsen) because her family belongs to a different Protestant sect. The ecclesiastical debate strikes to the community's heart, with only Inger (Birgitte Federspiel), the wife of Peter's eldest son Mikkel (Emil Hass Christensen), bridging the religious divide. In 'Gertrud' (1964), Nina Pens Rode stars as the eponymous politician's wife who decides to leave her husband (Bendt Rothe) just as he is about to take his place in government. Intending to move in with a young composer (Ebbe Rode), her plans change when she discovers that he has been unfaithful to her. In 'Master of the House' (1925), Johannes Meyer plays Victor Fransden, a businessman who takes out all his frustrations on his wife Ida (Astrid Holm) and family. Ida accepts the abuse and incessant fault-finding until one day his former nanny (Mathilde Nielsen) decides that she cannot bear to watch any more. She persuades Ida to leave Victor, and forces the erring husband to undertake all the household chores himself in an attempt to make him see the error of his ways.

Classic late period film noir directed by virtuoso Orson Welles. A sweaty thriller set in a hellish border town, it stars Charlton Heston as Mike Vargas, the self-righteous Mexican cop who goes up against Welles' monumental Hank Quinlan, an old-time detective who fabricates evidence in order to mount a case based on gut-instinct. Famous for its incredibly choreographed seven-minute opening shot, Henry Mancini's powerful score, and the faded magnificence of the Quinlan character, it is often considered to be Welles' second masterpiece.

Alexander Hall directs this classic drama starring Robert Montgomery as a boxer who his called up to Heaven too early due to a clerical error. When promising fighter Joe Pendleton (Montgomery) is killed in a plane accident, he is greeted at the Pearly Gates by guardian angel Mr Jordan (Claude Rains) who tells him that he has arrived too soon and that he must go back to Earth and enter the body of a soul who needs some nurturing. The cast also includes Rita Hayworth, John Emery and Don Costello.

Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner and Fred Astaire star in this apocalyptic sci-fi drama. In 1964, nuclear war has wiped out all life in Earth's northern hemisphere. After discovering San Francisco to be devastated and deserted, US submarine commander Captain Dwight Towers (Peck) and his crew head for Australia where they await the fallout that will inevitably kill them. Meanwhile, Australian scientist Julian Osborn (Astaire) achieves his life's ambition of winning an auto race and Towers finds romance with good-time girl Moira Davidson (Gardner), who is determined to take one last chance at love.

Dziga Vertov's groundbreaking film accompanied by a new, specially-written score by composer Michael Nyman. Vertov's film is widely acknowledged as one of the landmark achievements of early modern cinema; its use of such radical effects as dissolves, split screens, slow motion, superimpositions and freeze frames have made for one of the most enduring representations of early 20th century city life.

Self-made property developer Thomas Crown (Steve McQueen) masterminds a successful billion-dollar bank job, even though he has no need of the money. Beautiful insurance investigator Vicky Anderson (Faye Dunaway) begins to look into the case and instinctively picks Crown out as the major suspect. French director Jean-Luc Godard's deconstruction of the process of construction, both of film narrative and The Rolling Stones' song 'Sympathy for the Devil'. The film presents a collage for the viewer to engage with as they like. Interweaved is footage of the Stones in the studio, writing, rehearsing and recording the famous song, and footage of a group of Black Power protestors in a used car lot, brandishing guns and reading revolutionary tracts.

A semi-documentary based on the lives of two friends living on the remote Shetland island of Foula. It shows their struggles with the harshness of isolation and the everyday hurdles of love and survival. In 1978 director Michael Powell added a new (colour) introduction and epilogue to the film which was re-titled `Return to the Edge of the World'.

She confronts Death (Bernhard Goetzke) who offers her the chance to save his life. He tells her three tales of lovers and promises her she will be reunited with her beloved if she can first save just one of the lovers from the stories. After she agrees, Death tells her three exotic tales of ill-fated lovers, set in Persia, Venice and China. Will she be able to alter their destiny and, in turn, her own?

First of the Ealing comedies. A bunch of crooks use a comic paper, featuring stories penned by Felix H. Wilkinson (Alastair Sim), to pass on coded messages for robberies. When the comic's readership, a bunch of East End boys, discover what's going on they go to the police. The local constabulary, however, are no help, and so the plucky lads set out to foil the robbers themselves.

Billy Wilder directs this Oscar-winning classic exposé of the Hollywood studio system. Struggling Hollywood writer Joe Gillis (William Holden) is attempting to avoid his creditors when he pulls his car into the garage of an apparently deserted mansion. He soon discovers that it is in fact the home of Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson), an ageing actress who was once a star of silent films. Desperate for money, Gillis agrees to work on a screenplay adaptation of 'Salome' which Norma has written for her intended comeback. Gillis then gradually becomes trapped in Norma's bizarre fantasy world, and when he tries to leave her, she makes an attempt at suicide. The film also features silent screen legends Cecil B. DeMille, Buster Keaton and Erich von Stroheim in supporting roles.

Alex Cox's 1980s cult classic in which a luckless man forced to take a job as a car repossession worker finds that it transforms his life. Otto (Emilio Estevez) is an L.A. punk rocker with an attitude - qualities which cost him dearly when he is fired from his job at a supermarket after a fight with a co-worker. Then his girlfriend dumps him. Wandering the streets in despair, Otto meets Bud (Harry Dean Stanton), a 'repo man' who attempts to educate Otto on the value of his occupation. Otto is unconvinced but, with few other options, he takes Bud's advice and becomes a car repossession worker. Otto suddenly finds himself living a fast-paced life involving hotwiring, car chases and physical threats from irate car owners. Ultimately, he becomes entangled in the chase for a '64 Chevy driven by a mad scientist (Fox Harris) said to contain a lethal cargo.
