When promising fighter Joe Pendleton (Montgomery) is killed in a plane accident, he is greeted at the Pearly Gates by guardian angel Mr Jordan (Claude Rains) who tells him that he has arrived too soon and that he must go back to Earth and enter the body of a soul who needs some nurturing. The cast also includes Rita Hayworth, John Emery and Don Costello.

Dziga Vertov's groundbreaking film accompanied by a new, specially-written score by composer Michael Nyman. Vertov's film is widely acknowledged as one of the landmark achievements of early modern cinema; its use of such radical effects as dissolves, split screens, slow motion, superimpositions and freeze frames have made for one of the most enduring representations of early 20th century city life.

Silent fantasy drama co-written and directed by Fritz Lang. A young woman (Lil Dagover) is heartbroken after her fiancé (Walter Janssen) is suddenly taken from her. She confronts Death (Bernhard Goetzke) who offers her the chance to save his life. He tells her three tales of lovers and promises her she will be reunited with her beloved if she can first save just one of the lovers from the stories. After she agrees, Death tells her three exotic tales of ill-fated lovers, set in Persia, Venice and China. Will she be able to alter their destiny and, in turn, her own?

First of the Ealing comedies. A bunch of crooks use a comic paper, featuring stories penned by Felix H. Wilkinson (Alastair Sim), to pass on coded messages for robberies. When the comic's readership, a bunch of East End boys, discover what's going on they go to the police. The local constabulary, however, are no help, and so the plucky lads set out to foil the robbers themselves.

In 'Day of Wrath' (1943), set in 17th-century Denmark, elderly pastor Absalon Pedersson (Thorkild Roose) is cursed at the stake by a peasant woman (Anna Svierkier) whom he has tortured into a confession of witchcraft. Soon after, Absalon's young wife Anne (Lisbeth Movin) begins an affair with his son Martin (Preben Ledorff Rye). When Anne tells Absalon of her love for Martin, the old man suffers a fatal heart attack and she too finds herself being faced with accusations of witchcraft. In 'Ordet' (1955), head of the family Peter Borgen (Ejner Federspiel) forbids his younger son Anders (Cay Kristiansen) to marry his girlfriend Anne (Gerda Nielsen) because her family belongs to a different Protestant sect. The ecclesiastical debate strikes to the community's heart, with only Inger (Birgitte Federspiel), the wife of Peter's eldest son Mikkel (Emil Hass Christensen), bridging the religious divide. In 'Gertrud' (1964), Nina Pens Rode stars as the eponymous politician's wife who decides to leave her husband (Bendt Rothe) just as he is about to take his place in government. Intending to move in with a young composer (Ebbe Rode), her plans change when she discovers that he has been unfaithful to her. In 'Master of the House' (1925), Johannes Meyer plays Victor Fransden, a businessman who takes out all his frustrations on his wife Ida (Astrid Holm) and family. Ida accepts the abuse and incessant fault-finding until one day his former nanny (Mathilde Nielsen) decides that she cannot bear to watch any more. She persuades Ida to leave Victor, and forces the erring husband to undertake all the household chores himself in an attempt to make him see the error of his ways.

Classic British war film based on the novel by Pierre Boulle in which a group of POWs are forced to build a bridge in Burma for the Japanese. Colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness) is the appointed leader of the men interned in the camp. When the Japanese commander, Colonel Saito (Sessue Hayakawa), orders his captives to build a bridge across the river Kwai, Nicholson agrees on the basis that the project will keep his men occupied and give them an opportunity to prove, through the quality of their work, the superiority of British engineering. However, as the bridge progresses and the POWs strive to show their craftsmanship, Nicholson appears to lose sight of the fact that the ultimate object of the bridge is to help the Japanese win the war. The impending arrival of a British commando team, sent to destroy the bridge, looks set to provide a stern test of where the true loyalties of the increasingly obsessive Nicholson lie.

Martin Scorsese's film 'The Color of Money' (1986) is a sequel of sorts, with Newman playing Fast Eddie once again.

Unfortunately for Pip, Magwitch isn't the only frightening adult he becomes acquainted with. When Miss Havisham (Martita Hunt), an eccentric old woman still dressed for the wedding at which she was abandoned by her groom years ago, seeks a playmate for her charge, Estella (Jean Simmons), it is Pip who is sent for. The boy quickly falls in love with Estella, though his hopes seem forlorn due to the gap in social standing between the two. When an older Pip (John Mills) discovers that he has a benefactor, he feels that Estella may be won, but has he read the situation correctly?

Comedy drama directed by Roman Polanski starring Donald Pleasence and Francoise Dorleac. George (Pleasence) and Teresa (Dorleac) are an eccentric couple who have retreated to an island off the north-east coast of Britain, where they live an isolated existence in a large, dank castle. Their peace, however, is disrupted when the island is visited by two gangsters. The cast also features Lionel Stander, Jack MacGowran and William Franklyn.

Alfred Shaughnessy directs this classic British musical spin-off from the 1950s popular music show. The film follows an aspiring young singer who catches the '6.5 Special' train to London. Much to her delight, she finds the train is filled with various famous performers including Lonnie Donegan, Dickie Valentine, Petula Clark and Joan Regan who use the duration of the journey as rehearsal time.

Self-made property developer Thomas Crown (Steve McQueen) masterminds a successful billion-dollar bank job, even though he has no need of the money. Beautiful insurance investigator Vicky Anderson (Faye Dunaway) begins to look into the case and instinctively picks Crown out as the major suspect. Thus begins an intriguing cat-and-mouse game, with Crown treating Anderson to a fine old time - beach buggies, gliders, kinky chess games - as the pair try to simultaneously seduce and outwit each other. Norman Jewison directs.

Laurence Olivier directs and stars in this adaptation of Shakespeare's famous tragedy. Hamlet (Olivier), Prince of Denmark, is still mourning over the death of his father and his mother Gertrude's (Eileen Herlie) subsequent remarriage to Hamlet's despised uncle, Claudius (Basil Sydney), who is now King. When his father's ghost appears to Hamlet and reveals that it was Claudius who murdered him, the young prince vows revenge. However, a fatal flaw in his character - hesitation - mars his efforts, resulting in murder, madness and treachery. The film won five Oscars, including Best Actor for Olivier (who was also nominated for Best Director) and Best Film.

Bikers Captain America (Peter Fonda) and Billy (Dennis Hopper, who also directs) set off across America on the proceeds of a cocaine deal. En route to the New Orleans Mardi Gras festival they stop off at a hippy commune, before being arrested in Texas for joining a street parade without a licence. In jail they meet boozy civil rights lawyer George Hanson (Jack Nicholson), who decides to join them on their odyssey. Made on a shoestring budget, 'Easy Rider' was a huge hit upon its release, and this success proved instrumental in persuading the big Hollywood studios to invest in more films from young directors.

Sting and his wife Trudie Styler, along with an ensemble of actors, singers and musicians, bring to life the tragic love between the composer Robert Schumann and his pianist wife Clara Wieck. Reflecting the separation that came to be such a central theme of their lives, the performers are divided into male and female groups. Sting reads the letters of Robert Schumann, with his songs sung by Iain Burnside, while Trudie Styler reads Clara's letters, with her songs being sung by Rebecca Evans.

Classic documentary drama based on Walter Lord's book about the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. Told from the perspective of Second Officer Charles Lightoller (Kenneth More), the story follows the supposedly 'unsinkable' ship as she embarks on her maiden voyage and ultimately founders in the North Atlantic Ocean. The ship leaves port and soon Captain Smith (Laurence Naismith) is given several ice warnings but decides not to decrease the Titanic's speed. When the ship hits an iceberg late at night on April 14th the situation looks bleak, especially with the realisation that there are not enough lifeboats to carry all on board. The Titanic's distress call is received by the Carpathia but she is four hours away and unlikely to reach the ship before it sinks. Chaos breaks out both above and below deck as the passengers and crew race against time for their survival.

In 1880s Kansas, ageing gunslinger-turned-farmer William Munny reluctantly agrees to come out of retirement to help old friend Ned Logan collect the bounty on two wanted murderers.

The cowboys in question cut up a prostitute in a lawless town in Wyoming lorded over by the corrupt Sheriff Daggett, and if Munny and Logan want to catch them they are going to have to deal with Daggett first.

The film won four Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Hackman) and Best Film Editing.

Nicholas Ray directs this film noir adaptation of the novel by Dorothy B. Hughes starring Humphrey Bogart and Gloria Grahame. Troubled screenwriter Dixon Steele (Bogart) is given the opportunity to reinvigorate his failing career by creating a film adaptation of a trashy novel. After balking at the thought of actually reading it, Dixon hires Mildred (Martha Stewart), who he meets in a bar, to summarise the novel for him. They leave the bar together but when Mildred is found murdered the next day Dixon is the prime suspect. His only forthcoming alibi is from Laurel Gray (Grahame), who testifies to his innocence out of affection, rather than truth. As the pair fall helplessly in love, Laurel is haunted by the possibility that Dixon was the murderer.

D.W. Griffith co-writes and directs this epic and controversial account of the American Civil War and its aftermath. It tells the story of two families, the pro-Union Stonemans from the North and the pro-Confederacy Camerons from the South, and the way in which they are both caught up in the turmoil which befalls a sleepy Deep South town when Northern Abolitionists threaten to outlaw the slave trade which has existed there for years. Things go from bad to worse when Ben Cameron (Henry B. Walthall)'s little sister dies at the hands of Gus (Walter Long), a black farmhand, and Ben dons a Ku Klux Klan mask both to avenge her death and to come to the rescue of his beloved girlfriend Elsie (Lillian Gish), who has been kidnapped by a corrupt mixed-race governor.

Powerful drama about loyalties and the industrial workplace in early 60s Britain. Factory worker Tom Arnold (Richard Attenborough) does not share the same feelings as his fellow workers in a developing industrial dispute and refuses to go on strike with them. This results in him being 'sent to Coventry' by all concerned, including his best friend Joe Wallace (Michael Craig). The newspapers soon hear about this and the story becomes a matter of national concern, with many different parties trying to use Tom's stance to their own ends.
