Help your students understand that community/public health nursing skills benefit their nursing practice as well as patient outcomes in acute care This student-friendly, highly visual text expands students' viewpoints from the client-nurse relationship to a population focus. Acknowledging that population-focused tools and interventions are needed in acute care, as infection rates continue to rise and nurse-sensitive outcome indictors are closely monitored, Cherie Rector weaves in meaningful, real-life examples, case studies, and perspectives to help students understand that transitions in care are critical in today's healthcare system. Covering a multitude of community and public settings, situations, and populations, the book helps students learn about promoting health, preventing disease (not just treating it), and protecting at-risk populations-including the elderly, the LGBT community, and veterans. This fully updated 9th Edition encourages students to think more globally and covers new innovations and emerging threats to the public's health. KEY FEATURES NEW! QSEN sections tie key chapter concepts to quality and safety competencies, such as patient-centered care, teamwork & collaboration, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and informatics, to help students understand the importance of these concepts. NEW! Application to Population Health explores chapter concepts from a population-focused viewpoint and offers current examples of effective population interventions. What Do YOU Think? encourages students to reflect on thought-provoking current topics or dilemmas, enhancing critical thinking skills. Evidence-based Practice demonstrates how current research examples can be applied to public/community health nursing practice to achieve optimal outcomes. From the Case Files presents case study scenarios with application-based questions, challenging students to reflect on assessment and intervention. Perspectives from nursing students, novice to expert public health nurses, faculty members, policy makers, and clients cover commonly held misconceptions about community health nursing and link between skills across settings. Healthy People 2020 highlights pertinent goals and objectives to promote health. Activities to Promote Critical Thinking at the end of each chapter challenge students, promote critical-thinking skills, and encourage active involvement in solving community health problems. UniqueLevels of Prevention Pyramid boxes address a chapter topic and describe nursing actions at each of the three levels of prevention to help students understand this basic community health nursing concept.

The Solid Facts - Home Care in Europe (Paperback): World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe The Solid Facts - Home Care in Europe (Paperback)
World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe
R277 Discovery Miles 2 770 Out of stock

Demographic, epidemiological, social and cultural trends in European countries are changing the traditional patterns of care. The next decades will see rising numbers of care-dependent older people and noncommunicable diseases as the leading cause of chronic illness and disability. Further, urbanization and the break-up of the traditional large family group will lead to gaps in the care of older or disabled family members. These changes in needs and social structure require a different approach to policy and services in the health and social sectors; a disease-oriented approach alone is no longer appropriate. Home care could be an answer to these issues: a sustainable approach to prevent the need for unnecessary acute or long-term institutionalization and to maintain people in their homes and communities as long as possible. Along with new forms of service delivery organization, technological innovation can represent a viable solution to developing home care in Europe, provided that health care systems can further enhance integration and coordination. This publication is part of the work of the WHO Regional Office for Europe to present evidence for health policy- and decision-makers in a clear and understandable form. It explains why health and social services should provide high-quality and targeted home care for disabled and older people. It provides evidence for the effectiveness of home care, shows how it can be improved, and explains the need to ensure equitable access. The publication also explores the varied cultural and care contexts in different countries, and reveals how to educate professionals and the public about these issues. This booklet seeks to broaden awareness, stimulate debate and promote action.

No Place Like Home - A History of Nursing and Home Care in the United States (Paperback): Karen Buhler-Wilkerson No Place Like Home - A History of Nursing and Home Care in the United States (Paperback)
Karen Buhler-Wilkerson

"No Place Like Home" sets out to determine why home care, despite its potential as a cost-effective alternative to institutional care, remains a marginalized experiment in care giving. Nurse and historian Karen Buhler-Wilkerson traces the history of home care from its nineteenth-century origins in organized visiting nurses' associations, through a time when professional home care nearly disappeared, on to the 1960s, when a new wave of home care gathered force as physicians, hospital managers, and policy makers responded to economic mandates. Buhler-Wilkerson links local ideas about the formation and function of home-based services to national events and health care agendas, and she gives special attention to care of the "dangerous" sick, particularly poor immigrants with infectious diseases, and the "uninteresting" sick--those with chronic illnesses.
