Votes, Party Systems and Democracy in Asia (Paperback): Jungug Choi Votes, Party Systems and Democracy in Asia (Paperback)
Jungug Choi
R1,495 Discovery Miles 14 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book looks at the link between voters and political party systems in Asian democracies, focusing on India, Indonesia, Korea and the Philippines. It discusses this link in terms of three distinct elements: the formation of voters preferences, the translation of preferences into votes, and the translation of votes into seats. The book goes on to discuss how far the general rules of political party systems and their underlying causal mechanisms such as strategic voting are apparent in these Asian democracies. In particular, it explores the extent to which electoral rules and social structural variables affect the process of transforming preferences into a political party system within the context of Asian politics. The extensive areas covered by the book overcome the traditional sub-regional division of Asia, namely, East, Southeast and South Asia.

Trust and Terror - Social Capital and the Use of Terrorism as a Tool of Resistance (Hardcover): Ammar Shamaileh Trust and Terror - Social Capital and the Use of Terrorism as a Tool of Resistance (Hardcover)
Ammar Shamaileh
R4,134 Discovery Miles 41 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Why do some individuals choose to protest political grievances via non-violent means, while others take up arms? What role does whom we trust play in how we collectively act? This book explores these questions by delving into the relationship between interpersonal trust and the nature of the political movements that individuals choose to join. Utilizing the examples of the Arab Spring uprisings in Egypt, Libya and Syria, a novel theoretical model that links the literature on social capital and interpersonal trust to violent collective action is developed and extended. Beyond simply bringing together two lines of literature, this theoretical model can serve as a prism from which the decision to join terrorist organizations or violent movements may be analyzed. The implications of the theory are then examined more closely through an in-depth look at the behavior of members of political movements at the outset of the Arab Spring, as well as statistical tests of the relationship between interpersonal trust and terrorism in the Middle East and globally. Trust and Terror will be of interest to scholars of Comparative Politics and International Relations. European Enlargement across Rounds and Beyond Borders (Hardcover): Haakon A. Ikonomou, Aurelie Andry, Rebekka Byberg European Enlargement across Rounds and Beyond Borders (Hardcover)
Haakon A. Ikonomou, Aurelie Andry, Rebekka Byberg
R4,591 Discovery Miles 45 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Enlargement has been an almost constant part of European integration history - going from an improvised exercise to the EU's most developed foreign policy tool. However, neither the longevity nor the complexity of enlargement has been properly historicised. European Enlargement across Rounds and Beyond Borders offers three interdisciplinary, innovative, and indeed radical, new ways of understanding and analysing EC/EU enlargements: first, tracing Longue Duree developments; second, investigating enlargement Beyond the Road to Membership; and third, exploring the Entangled Exchanges and synergies between the EC/EU and its outside. This edited volume will provide fresh perspectives on enlargement as one of the defining processes in Europe in the second half of the 20th century: How are we to understand enlargement as a policy? How has it changed the EU? What is the historical role of the British press in shaping the UK's visions of Europe? How has enlargement played into Russia's relationship with today's EU? Giving answers to these questions, and many more, this volume wishes to spark a broad debate about the roots, range, and repercussions of enlargement, and how historians, and other scholars, should engage with it. This publication will be of key interest to scholars and students of modern European history and politics, the European integration process, EU studies, and more broadly multilateral international institutions, history, law and the social sciences.

The Politico-Legal Dynamics of Judicial Review - A Comparative Analysis (Paperback): Theunis Roux The Politico-Legal Dynamics of Judicial Review - A Comparative Analysis (Paperback)
Theunis Roux
R950 Discovery Miles 9 500 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Comparative scholarship on judicial review has paid a lot of attention to the causal impact of politics on judicial decision-making. However, the slower-moving, macro-social process through which judicial review influences societal conceptions of the law/politics relation is less well understood. Drawing on the political science literature on institutional change, The Politico-Legal Dynamics of Judicial Review tests a typological theory of the evolution of judicial review regimes - complexes of legitimating ideas about the law/politics relation. The theory posits that such regimes tend to conform to one of four main types - democratic or authoritarian legalism, or democratic or authoritarian instrumentalism. Through case studies of Australia, India, and Zimbabwe, and a comparative chapter analyzing ten additional societies, the book then explores how actually-existing judicial review regimes transition between these types. This process of ideational development, Roux concludes, is distinct both from the everyday business of constitutional politics and from changes to the formal constitution.

Islam, Authoritarianism, and Underdevelopment - A Global and Historical Comparison (Hardcover): Ahmet T. Kuru Islam, Authoritarianism, and Underdevelopment - A Global and Historical Comparison (Hardcover)
Ahmet T. Kuru
R2,625 Discovery Miles 26 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Why do Muslim-majority countries exhibit high levels of authoritarianism and low levels of socio-economic development in comparison to world averages? Ahmet T. Kuru criticizes explanations which point to Islam as the cause of this disparity, because Muslims were philosophically and socio-economically more developed than Western Europeans between the ninth and twelfth centuries. Nor was Western colonialism the cause: Muslims had already suffered political and socio-economic problems when colonization began. Kuru argues that Muslims had influential thinkers and merchants in their early history, when religious orthodoxy and military rule were prevalent in Europe. However, in the eleventh century, an alliance between orthodox Islamic scholars (the ulema) and military states began to emerge. This alliance gradually hindered intellectual and economic creativity by marginalizing intellectual and bourgeois classes in the Muslim world. This important study links its historical explanation to contemporary politics by showing that, to this day, ulema-state alliance still prevents creativity and competition in Muslim countries.

Governance by International Public Administrations - Bureaucratic Influence and Global Public Policies (Hardcover): Christoph... Governance by International Public Administrations - Bureaucratic Influence and Global Public Policies (Hardcover)
Christoph Knill, Michael Bauer
R4,136 Discovery Miles 41 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As the demand and necessity for greater international and transnational cooperation increase, the bureaucratic bodies of international organizations are receiving ever more scholarly attention. However, the relevance of International Public Administrations (IPAs) for global policy-making remains neither empirically nor theoretically well understood, and yet little systematic knowledge is available about the influence international bureaucracies may have on policy-making. What makes international bureaucracies influential? Are the sources of their influence on policy-making comparable to that of national public administrations? Is there a need to reflect on other factors than known from the analysis of national bureaucracies or for re-assessing the impact of traditional factors of influence in multilevel constellations? Is there a systematic link between intra-organizational structures and the behavior of the personnel of international bureaucracies and the policy output of their organizations? What are the effects of international bureaucracies' role for particular policies or policy constellations? The different contributions in this volume address these questions from different conceptual perspectives and focus on different tools of administrative governance. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of European Public Policy.

Democracy and Nationalism in Southeast Asia - From Secessionist Mobilization to Conflict Resolution (Paperback): Jacques... Democracy and Nationalism in Southeast Asia - From Secessionist Mobilization to Conflict Resolution (Paperback)
Jacques Bertrand
R753 Discovery Miles 7 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Jacques Bertrand offers a comparative-historical analysis of five nationalist conflicts over several decades in Southeast Asia. Using a theoretical framework to explain variance over time and across cases, he challenges and refines existing debates on democracy's impact and shows that, while democratization significantly reduces violent insurgency over time, it often introduces pernicious effects that fail to resolve conflict and contribute to maintaining deep nationalist grievances. Drawing on years of detailed fieldwork, Bertrand analyses the paths that led from secessionist mobilization to a range of outcomes. These include persistent state repression for Malay Muslims in Thailand, low level violence under a top-down 'special autonomy' for Papuans, reframing of mobilizing from nationalist to indigenous peoples in the Cordillera, a long and broken path to an untested broad autonomy for the Moros and relatively successful broad autonomy for Acehnese.

Political Leadership, Nascent Statehood and Democracy - A comparative study (Paperback): Ulrika Moeller, Isabell Schierenbeck Political Leadership, Nascent Statehood and Democracy - A comparative study (Paperback)
Ulrika Moeller, Isabell Schierenbeck
R369 Discovery Miles 3 690 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Do political leaders determine whether a polity will receive a democratic future or not? Research and advocates of democracy agree on the significance of political elites for democratization, yet there is a need for a more specific understanding of their role. This book develops a theory of political leadership at the point of nascent statehood to explain the emergence of resilient democracies. It employs four diverse case studies to examine the role of leadership and democratic consolidation. In doing so, the book identifies certain capacities of political leaders at the critical moment of nascent statehood as decisive to the future democratic quality of their state. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of international relations, democratization studies, state building, leadership, nationalism, Middle Eastern studies and South Asian studies.

The Politics of Immigration Beyond Liberal States - Morocco and Tunisia in Comparative Perspective (Hardcover): Katharina Natter The Politics of Immigration Beyond Liberal States - Morocco and Tunisia in Comparative Perspective (Hardcover)
Katharina Natter
R2,258 Discovery Miles 22 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Immigration presents a fundamental challenge to the nation-state and is a key political priority for governments worldwide. However, knowledge of the politics of immigration remains largely limited to liberal states of the Global North. In this book, Katharina Natter draws on extensive fieldwork and archival research to compare immigration policymaking in authoritarian Morocco and democratizing Tunisia. Through this analysis, Natter advances theory-building on immigration beyond the liberal state and demonstrates how immigration politics - or how a state deals with 'the other' - can provide valuable insights into the inner workings of political regimes. Connecting scholarship from comparative politics, international relations and sociology across the Global North and Global South, Natter's highly original study challenges long-held assumptions and reveals the fascinating interplay between immigration, political regimes, and modern statehood around the world.

Everyday Choices - The Role of Competing Authorities and Social Institutions in Politics and Development (Paperback): Ellen M.... Everyday Choices - The Role of Competing Authorities and Social Institutions in Politics and Development (Paperback)
Ellen M. Lust
R557 Discovery Miles 5 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Scholars and practitioners seek development solutions through the engineering and strengthening of state institutions. Yet, the state is not the only or the primary arena shaping how citizens, service providers and state officials engage in actions that constitute politics and development. These individuals are members of religious orders, ethnic communities, and other groups that make claims on them, creating incentives that shape their actions. Recognizing how individuals experience these claims and view the choices before them is essential to understanding political processes and development outcomes. This Element establishes a framework elucidating these forces, which is key to knowledge accumulation, designing future research and effective programming. Taking an institutional approach, this Element explains how the salience of arenas of authority associated with various communities and the nature of social institutions within them affect politics and development. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Democracy Disconnected - Participation and Governance in a City of the South (Paperback): Fiona Anciano, Laurence Piper Democracy Disconnected - Participation and Governance in a City of the South (Paperback)
Fiona Anciano, Laurence Piper
R430 R406 Discovery Miles 4 060 Save R24 (6%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

Why is dissatisfaction with local democracy endemic, despite the spread of new participatory institutions? This book argues that a key reason is the limited power of elected local officials, especially to produce the City. City Hall lacks control over key aspects of city decision-making, especially under conditions of economic globalisation and rapid urbanisation in the urban South. Demonstrated through case studies of daily politics in Hout Bay, Democracy Disconnected shows how Cape Town residents engage local rule. In the absence of democratic control, urban rule in the Global South becomes a complex and contingent framework of multiple and multilevel forms of urban governance (FUG) that involve City Hall, but are not directed by it. Bureaucratic governance coexists alongside market, developmental and informal forms of governance. This disconnect of democracy from urban governance segregates people spatially, socially, but also politically. Thus, while the residents of Hout Bay may live next to each other, they do not live with each other. This book will be a valuable resource for students on programmes such as urban studies, political science, sociology, development studies, and political geography.

Latin American Revolutionaries and the Arab World - From the Suez Canal to the Arab Spring (Hardcover, New Ed): Federico Velez Latin American Revolutionaries and the Arab World - From the Suez Canal to the Arab Spring (Hardcover, New Ed)
Federico Velez
R3,991 Discovery Miles 39 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Recounting recent encounters between Latin American and Arab countries this unique volume explores how, despite both geographical and cultural distances, Latin American revolutionaries constructed an image of the Arab World as one sharing their own political views and interests. From the nationalization of the Suez Canal to Latin American perspectives on the Arab Spring Federico Velez offers a fascinating historical and contemporary analysis on the behaviour of actors on the periphery of the international system. Contributing to debates regarding ideological and political autonomy the book provides a comprehensive historical account of relations between the countries of Latin America and the Middle East alongside new analysis on the ways marginalized states can sometimes build unlikely alliances in their attempts to challenge structures of power.

Mapping My Return - A Palestinian Memoir (Paperback): Salman Abu Sitta Mapping My Return - A Palestinian Memoir (Paperback)
Salman Abu Sitta
R771 R721 Discovery Miles 7 210 Save R50 (6%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Salman Abu Sitta, who has single-handedly made available crucial mapping work on Palestine, was just ten years old when he left his home near Beersheba in 1948, but as for many Palestinians of his generation, the profound effects of that traumatic loss would form the defining feature of his life from that moment on. In this rich and moving memoir, Abu Sitta draws on oral histories and personal recollections to vividly evoke the vanished world of his family and home from the late nineteenth century to the eve of the British withdrawal from Palestine and subsequent war. Alongside accounts of an idyllic childhood spent on his family's farm estate Abu Sitta gives a personal and very human face to the dramatic events of 1930s and 1940s Palestine, conveying the acute sense of foreboding felt by Palestinians as Zionist ambitions and militarization expanded under the mandate. Following his family's flight to Gaza during the 1948 mass exodus of Palestinians from their homes, Abu Sitta continued his schooling and university education in Cairo, where he witnessed the heady rise of Arab nationalism after the overthrow of King Farouk in 1952 and the momentous events surrounding the Israeli invasion of Sinai and Gaza in 1956. With warmth and humor, he chronicles his peripatetic exile's existence, as an engineering student in Nasser's Egypt, his crucial, formative years in 1960s London, his life as a family man and academic in Canada, and several sojourns in Kuwait, all against the backdrop of seismic political events in the region, including the 1967 and 1973 Arab-Israeli wars, the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon, and the 1991 Gulf War. Abu Sitta's narrative is imbued throughout with a burning sense of justice, a determination to recover and document what rightfully belongs to his people, an aim given poignant expression in his painstaking cartographic and archival work on Palestine, for which he is justifiably acclaimed.

The Legacies of Totalitarianism - A Theoretical Framework (Paperback): Aviezer Tucker The Legacies of Totalitarianism - A Theoretical Framework (Paperback)
Aviezer Tucker
R777 Discovery Miles 7 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The first political theory of post-Communism examines its implications for understanding liberty, rights, transitional justice, property rights, privatization, rule of law, centrally planned public institutions, and the legacies of totalitarian thought in language and discourse. The transition to post-totalitarianism was the spontaneous adjustment of the rights of the late-totalitarian elite to its interest. Post-totalitarian governments faced severe scarcity in the supply of justice. Rough justice punished the perpetrators and compensated their victims. Historical theories of property rights became radical, and consequentialist theories, conservative. Totalitarianism in Europe disintegrated but did not end. The legacies of totalitarianism in higher education met New Public Management, totalitarian central planning under a new label. Totalitarianism divorced language from reality through the use of dialectics that identified opposites and the use of logical fallacies to argue for ideological conclusions. This book illustrates these legacies in the writings of Habermas, Derrida, and Zizek about democracy, personal responsibility, dissidence, and totalitarianism.

Power-Sharing in Conflict-Ridden Societies - Challenges for Building Peace and Democratic Stability (Hardcover, New Ed): Nils... Power-Sharing in Conflict-Ridden Societies - Challenges for Building Peace and Democratic Stability (Hardcover, New Ed)
Nils A. Butenschon, Oyvind Stiansen, Kare Vollan
R4,017 Discovery Miles 40 170 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Based on a unique comparative study of Burundi, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Lebanon, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Nepal, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Fiji this book analyses the formal and informal arrangements defining the post-conflict political order in these countries and evaluates whether these systems strengthened or weakened the chances of establishing sustainable peace and lasting democracy. What can be learned from these cases? Each country has it unique history but they are faced with comparable challenges and dilemmas in building a democratic future. Which solutions seem to contribute to democratic stability and which do not? These questions are discussed in light of theoretical literature, case studies, and field interviews with the authors concluding that systems based on proportional representation offered the best prospects for including diverse and conflicting identities and building unified political systems. The book is of particular interest to students of democracy and peace-building; academics as well as decision-makers and practitioners in the field.

Colonial Bureaucracy and Contemporary Citizenship (Hardcover): Yael Berda Colonial Bureaucracy and Contemporary Citizenship (Hardcover)
Yael Berda
R2,250 Discovery Miles 22 500 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Colonial Bureaucracy and Contemporary Citizenship examines how the legacies of colonial bureaucracy continue to shape political life after empire. Focusing on the former British colonies of India, Cyprus, and Israel/Palestine, the book explores how post-colonial states use their inherited administrative legacies to classify and distinguish between loyal and suspicious subjects and manage the movement of populations, thus shaping the practical meaning of citizenship and belonging within their new boundaries. The book offers a novel institutional theory of 'hybrid bureaucracy' to explain how racialized bureaucratic practices were used by powerful administrators in state organizations to shape the making of political identity and belonging in the new states. Combining sociology and anthropology of the state with the study of institutions, this book offers new knowledge to overturn conventional understandings of bureaucracy, demonstrating that routine bureaucratic practices and persistent colonial logics continue to shape unequal political status to this day.

Greed and Guns - Imperial Origins of the Developing World (Paperback): Atul Kohli Greed and Guns - Imperial Origins of the Developing World (Paperback)
Atul Kohli
R557 Discovery Miles 5 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This Element studies the causes and the consequences of modern imperialism. The focus is on British and US imperialism in the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries respectively. The dynamics of both formal and informal empires are analyzed. The argument is that imperialism is moved mainly by the desire of major powers to enhance their national economic prosperity. They do so by undermining sovereignty in peripheral countries and establishing open economic access. The impact on the countries of the periphery tends to be negative. In a world of states, then, national sovereignty is an economic asset. Since imperialism seeks to limit the exercise of sovereign power by subject people, there tends to be an inverse relationship between imperialism and development: the less control a state has over its own affairs, the less likely it is that the people of that state will experience economic progress.

Under the Gun - Political Parties and Violence in Pakistan (Hardcover): Niloufer A. Siddiqui Under the Gun - Political Parties and Violence in Pakistan (Hardcover)
Niloufer A. Siddiqui
R2,254 Discovery Miles 22 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Political parties are integral to democracy and yet they frequently engage in anti-democratic, violent behaviour. Parties can employ violence directly, outsource violence to gangs and militias, or form electoral alliances with non-state armed actors. When do parties engage in, or facilitate, violence? What determines the strategies of violence that they employ? Drawing on data from Pakistan, Under the Gun argues that party violence is not a simple manifestation of weak state capacity but instead the intentional product of political incentives, further complicating the process of democratization. Using a rigorous multi-method approach based on over a hundred interviews and numerous surveys, the book demonstrates that a party's violence strategy depends on the incentives it faces in the subnational political landscape in which it operates, the cost it incurs from its voters for violent acts, and its organizational capacity for violence.

Contested Representation - Challenges, Shortcomings and Reforms (Hardcover): Claudia Landwehr, Thomas Saalfeld, Armin Schafer Contested Representation - Challenges, Shortcomings and Reforms (Hardcover)
Claudia Landwehr, Thomas Saalfeld, Armin Schafer
R2,258 Discovery Miles 22 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the past two decades, democratic institutions have faced a crisis of representation. From authoritarian backsliding in countries with recent democratic transformations, to severe challenges to established liberal democracies, the meaning of political representation and whether and when it succeeds has become highly debated. In response to an increasingly fraught political climate, Contested Representation brings together scholars from across the United States and Europe to critically assess the performance of representative institutions in Europe and North America. Taking an interdisciplinary, comparative approach, this volume looks at the viability of electoral institutions, the responsiveness of government to public preferences, alternative institutions for more inclusive democracy, and the political economy of populism. Chapters also address the broader normative question of how democratic institutions can be adapted to new conditions and challenges. Expertly researched and exceedingly timely, Contested Representation provides critical frameworks that highlight realistic pathways to democratic reform.

Equivalence in Comparative Politics - The Problem of Equivalence (Paperback): Jan Van Deth Equivalence in Comparative Politics - The Problem of Equivalence (Paperback)
Jan Van Deth
R1,419 Discovery Miles 14 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book tackles the issues involved and explores strategies to deal with many of the problems of establishing equivalence. Each contribution focuses on a theoretically relevant theme, such as: tolerance; political values; religious orientations; gender roles; voluntary associations; party organizations and party positions; democratic regimes, and the mass media. Each chapter covers different topics, methods, data and countries, making use of research to show the problems of finding similar or identical indicators in realistic research settings.

Policy Convergence in the UK and Germany - Beyond the Third Way? (Paperback): Simon Green Policy Convergence in the UK and Germany - Beyond the Third Way? (Paperback)
Simon Green
R964 Discovery Miles 9 640 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Policy convergence and policy learning have emerged as central themes in the study of public policy in recent years. This book complements the rich literature on theoretical aspects as well as individual case studies by undertaking a systematic comparison of policy convergence between two specific countries, the UK and Germany. Both are member-states of the EU and face similar policy challenges across a number of policy sectors; as such, both are ideally suited to such a comparison. In particular, in the late 1990s, the social-democratic governments of both countries explicitly sought to develop common solutions under the heading of the 'Third Way'. By including analyses of not only of institutions but also of key areas of domestic and foreign policy, this volume makes a unique contribution to the study of public policy in two of the EU's key member-states. This book is also a dedication to Professor William Paterson, who has contributed immensely to the field of German Studies in Britain. This book was previously published as a special issue of German Politics

The Politics of Think Tanks in Europe (Hardcover): Jesper Dahl Kelstrup The Politics of Think Tanks in Europe (Hardcover)
Jesper Dahl Kelstrup
R4,436 Discovery Miles 44 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the 21st century, think tanks have become more than a buzzword in European public discourse. They now play important roles in the policy-making process by providing applied research, building networks and advocating policies. The book studies the development of think tanks and contemporary consequences in the United Kingdom, Germany, Denmark and at the EU-level. A Continental think tank tradition in which the state plays a pivotal role and an Anglo-American tradition which facilitates interaction in public policy on market-like terms have shaped the development of think tanks. On the basis of a typology of think tanks, quantitative data and interviews with think tank practitioners, the interplay between state and market dynamics and the development of different types of think tanks is analysed. Although think tanks develop along different institutional trajectories, it is concluded that the Anglo-American tradition has had a significant, cross-cutting impact in Europe in recent years. The contention over the politics of think tanks runs deeper at the EU-level than in the member states and reflects disagreement over how the EU should develop in the future. This text will be of key interest to scholars, students and practitioners of political communication, public policy, European politics and comparative politics.

The State of Democracy in Central and Eastern Europe - A Comparative Perspective (Hardcover): Ramona Coman, Luca Tomini The State of Democracy in Central and Eastern Europe - A Comparative Perspective (Hardcover)
Ramona Coman, Luca Tomini
R3,981 Discovery Miles 39 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The State of Democracy in Central and Eastern Europe brings together scholars specialising in the study of Central and Eastern Europe, and provides a comprehensive analysis of some of the major issues in the democratic make-up of the EU's new member states. The book covers the main dimensions of the state, and contributors discuss questions about the development of democracy in Central and Eastern Europe over the past twenty years. What is the present state of democracy in Central and Eastern Europe more than twenty years since the end of communist regimes? What is the actual functioning of the political institutions of these countries? How is political participation structured, and what role do political parties play in these democracies? What guarantees are provided to limit governmental powers and abuse? What is the role of the judicial system, and the relationship between justice and politics? How can we evaluate the EU's influence regarding democratic consolidation? What is the role of the public opinion? This book was originally published as a special issue of Europe-Asia Studies.
