Engineering Embedded Systems - Physics, Programs, Circuits (Hardcover, 2015 ed.): Peter Hintenaus Engineering Embedded Systems - Physics, Programs, Circuits (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Peter Hintenaus
R2,973 R2,072 Discovery Miles 20 720 Save R901 (30%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is a textbook for graduate and final-year-undergraduate computer-science and electrical-engineering students interested in the hardware and software aspects of embedded and cyberphysical systems design. It is comprehensive and self-contained, covering everything from the basics to case-study implementation. Emphasis is placed on the physical nature of the problem domain and of the devices used. The reader is assumed to be familiar on a theoretical level with mathematical tools like ordinary differential equation and Fourier transforms. In this book these tools will be put to practical use. Engineering Embedded Systems begins by addressing basic material on signals and systems, before introducing to electronics. Treatment of digital electronics accentuating synchronous circuits and including high-speed effects proceeds to micro-controllers, digital signal processors and programmable logic. Peripheral units and decentralized networks are given due weight. The properties of analog circuits and devices like filters and data converters are covered to the extent desirable by a systems architect. The handling of individual elements concludes with power supplies including regulators and converters. The final section of the text is composed of four case studies: * electric-drive control, permanent magnet synchronous motors in particular; * lock-in amplification with measurement circuits for weight and torque, and moisture; * design of a simple continuous wave radar that can be operated to measure speed and distance; and * design of a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer for process applications. End-of-chapter exercises will assist the student to assimilate the tutorial material and these are supplemented by a downloadable solutions manual for instructors. The "pen-and-paper" problems are further augmented with laboratory activities. In addition to its student market, Engineering Embedded Systems will assist industrial practitioners working in systems architecture and the design of electronic measurement systems to keep up to date with developments in embedded systems through self study.

Cloud Foundry (Paperback): Duncan Winn Cloud Foundry (Paperback)
Duncan Winn
R412 Discovery Miles 4 120 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

What exactly is a cloud-native platform? It's certainly a hot topic in IT, as enterprises today assess this option for developing and delivering software quickly and repeatedly. This O'Reilly report explains the capabilities of cloud-native platforms and examines the fundamental changes enterprises need to make in process, organization, and culture if they're to take real advantage of this approach. Author Duncan Winn focuses on the open source platform Cloud Foundry, one of the more prominent cloud-native providers. You'll learn how cloud-native applications are designed to be "infrastructure unaware" so they can thrive and move at will in the highly distributed and constantly evolving cloud environment. With this report, you'll explore: Technical driving forces that are rapidly changing the way organizations develop and deliver software today How key concepts underpinning the Cloud Foundry platform leverage each of the technical forces discussed How cloud-native platforms remove the requirement to perform undifferentiated heavy lifting, such as provisioning VMs, middleware, and databases Why cloud-native platforms enable fast feedback loops as you move from agile development to agile deployment Recommended changes and practical considerations for organizations that want to build cloud-native applications.

Learn how to institute and implement enterprise architecture in your organisation. You can make a quick start and establish a baseline for your enterprise architecture within ten weeks, then grow and stabilise the architecture over time using the proven Ready, Set, Go Approach. Reading this book will: Give you directions on how to institute and implement enterprise architecture in your organization. You will be able to build close relationships with stakeholders and delivery teams, but you will not need to micromanage the architectures operations; Increase your awareness that enterprise architecture is about business, not information technology; Enable you to initiate and facilitate dramatic business development. The architecture of an enterprise must be tolerant of currently unknown business initiatives; Show you how to get a holistic view of the process of implementing enterprise architecture; Make you aware that information is a key business asset and that information architecture is a key part of the enterprise architecture; Allow you to learn from our experiences. This book is based on our 30 years of work in the enterprise architecture field, colleagues in Europe, customer cases, and students. If your company is about to make a major change and you are looking for a way to reduce the changes into manageable pieces -- and still retain control of how they fit together -- this is your handbook. Maybe you are already acting as an enterprise architect and using a formal method, but you need practical hints. Or maybe you are about to set up an enterprise architect network or group of specialists and need input on how to organise your work. The Ready-Set-Go method for introducing enterprise architecture provides you, the enterprise architect, with an immediate understanding of the basic steps for starting, organising, and operating the entirety of your organisations architecture. Chapter 1 shows how to model and analyse your business operations, assess their current status, construct a future scenario, compare it to the current structure, analyse what you see, and show the result in a city plan. Chapter 2 deals with preparing for the implementation of the architecture with governance, enterprise architecture organisation, staffing, etc. This is the organising step before beginning the actual work. Chapter 3 establishes how to implement a city plan in practice. It deals with the practicalities of working as an enterprise architect and is called the running step. The common thread through all aspects of the enterprise architects work is the architects mastery of a number of tools, such as business models, process models, information models, and matrices. We address how to initiate the architecture process within the organisation in such a way that the overarching enterprise architecture and architecture-driven approach can be applied methodically and gradually improved.

Christian Muller-Schloer, Sven Tomforde
R2,340 Discovery Miles 23 400 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is a comprehensive introduction into Organic Computing (OC), presenting systematically the current state-of-the-art in OC. It starts with motivating examples of self-organising, self-adaptive and emergent systems, derives their common characteristics and explains the fundamental ideas for a formal characterisation of such systems. Special emphasis is given to a quantitative treatment of concepts like self-organisation, emergence, autonomy, robustness, and adaptivity. The book shows practical examples of architectures for OC systems and their applications in traffic control, grid computing, sensor networks, robotics, and smart camera systems. The extension of single OC systems into collective systems consisting of social agents based on concepts like trust and reputation is explained. OC makes heavy use of learning and optimisation technologies; a compact overview of these technologies and related approaches to self-organising systems is provided. So far, OC literature has been published with the researcher in mind. Although the existing books have tried to follow a didactical concept, they remain basically collections of scientific papers. A comprehensive and systematic account of the OC ideas, methods, and achievements in the form of a textbook which lends itself to the newcomer in this field has been missing so far. The targeted reader of this book is the master student in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering - or any other newcomer to the field of Organic Computing with some technical or Computer Science background. Readers can seek access to OC ideas from different perspectives: OC can be viewed (1) as a "philosophy" of adaptive and self-organising - life-like - technical systems, (2) as an approach to a more quantitative and formal understanding of such systems, and finally (3) a construction method for the practitioner who wants to build such systems. In this book, we first try to convey to the reader a feeling of the special character of natural and technical self-organising and adaptive systems through a large number of illustrative examples. Then we discuss quantitative aspects of such forms of organisation, and finally we turn to methods of how to build such systems for practical applications.

Christopher Gatti
R3,155 Discovery Miles 31 550 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This thesis takes an empirical approach to understanding of the behavior and interactions between the two main components of reinforcement learning: the learning algorithm and the functional representation of learned knowledge. The author approaches these entities using design of experiments not commonly employed to study machine learning methods. The results outlined in this work provide insight as to what enables and what has an effect on successful reinforcement learning implementations so that this learning method can be applied to more challenging problems.
