Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy and Coaching - An Evidence-Based Framework (Paperback): Andreas Liefooghe Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy and Coaching - An Evidence-Based Framework (Paperback)
Andreas Liefooghe
R1,072 Discovery Miles 10 720 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Based on over a decade of sustained longitudinal research with a broad range of different user groups, Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy and Coaching: An Evidence-Based Framework is an essential guide which offers both theoretical foundations and practical models for working with horses in psychotherapy and coaching. While not a panacea for distress and difficulties, the connections that humans find with horses can become a catalyst for deeper self-knowledge. By de-centring the human subject and placing the horse in the middle of the investigation, the ways in which humans make sense of themselves can be explored and more easily understood. Drawing on this wide spectrum of different client groups, the book features intervention studies with expelled teenagers, adults in addiction recovery programmes, children diagnosed on the autistic spectrum, people suffering from trauma and mental health problems, prisoners and even multi-national corporations wanting culture change. The practice of using horses in a psychological intervention is thoroughly scrutinised throughout, with ways of establishing successful change documented and assessed. Liefooghe's analysis of these studies builds up to provide a comprehensive, evidence-based framework for equine-assisted psychotherapy and coaching. This essential book offers psychotherapists, coaches and all those who work in a helping capacity a clear insight into what horses can and cannot do in a therapeutic role.

How the COVID-19 Pandemic Transformed the Mental Health Landscape - Practice, Training, Supervision and Research, Volume II... How the COVID-19 Pandemic Transformed the Mental Health Landscape - Practice, Training, Supervision and Research, Volume II (Hardcover)
Shigeru Iwakabe, Sarah Knox
R3,876 Discovery Miles 38 760 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book is a valuable historical record of how counselling psychologists responded to the COVID-19 pandemic around the globe. Volume II presents 17 chapters that address four major topic areas. In the first, the chapters focus on training and supervision: during the pandemic, most on-site training and supervision had to be discontinued to prevent spread of the virus. However, many trainers and training programs found creative ways to continue to provide training opportunities to their trainees. The second focus is on the populations who may require specialty care during times of such upheaval, such as those with psychosis and serious mental illness. In the third part, the chapters speak to the pandemic across cultures, as well as its effects on clients from underrepresented groups. Finally, three chapters present research perspectives on the pandemic. Written by prominent researchers and clinicians in the field of counselling and psychotherapy, both the volumes together cover a wide range of perspectives and offer useful clinical recommendations related to effective telepsychotherapy practice. The chapters in these volumes were originally published as a special issue of Counselling Psychology Quarterly.

Transitioning to Internal Family Systems Therapy is a guide to resolving the common areas of confusion and stuckness that professionals often experience when facilitating the transformational potential of the IFS model. Real-life clinical and autobiographical material is used throughout from the author's supervision practice, together with insights from IFS developer Richard C. How Change Happens in Equine-Assisted Interventions - A Theory of Horses, Humans, and Psychotherapy (Hardcover): Noreen W.... How Change Happens in Equine-Assisted Interventions - A Theory of Horses, Humans, and Psychotherapy (Hardcover)
Noreen W. Esposito, Angela K. Fournier
R3,862 Discovery Miles 38 620 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

How Change Happens in Equine-Assisted Interventions gives clinicians and researchers an intervention theory on the mechanisms of change during psychotherapy and other interventions that incorporate horses. Chapters introduce the concept of intervention theory, present a theory of the problem (what the client comes with), theories explaining the intervention (what is done during a session) and theories of change (what happens in the mind of a client), with each theory's function described. Using an autoethnographic approach, the authors describe, deconstruct, and analyze personal experiences as clients during an equine-assisted intervention. Then the authors present and apply a unique intervention theory by linking it to the thoughts and experiences of clients in and after a session. Practitioners will come away from this book with a unique perspective on the field and with an increased understanding of what their clients are thinking both in and out of session. Researchers will have an explanatory theory from which to draw testable hypotheses when studying interventions incorporating horses.

Farzaneh Yazdani
R1,136 Discovery Miles 11 360 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

It explores how to: conceptualise people's life stories through the model; take vital steps to help identify any problems; draw personal profiles; introduce intervention strategies for promoting wellbeing. Focusing on enhancing wellbeing, rather than ill health, the concept of occupational wholeness supports people to feel more control of their own lives and helps to identify what balance can be created, while recognising personal limitations and environmental restrictions. Alongside theoretical background, it includes practice applications and practical tools, with scenarios and activities to consolidate learning. Providing a unique combination of the practice and theory of occupational science, Yazdani integrates occupational science, psychology and sociology with clinical experience of working with diverse groups of people in different countries. This book is an important guide and reference for occupational therapists, occupational scientists, counsellors and life coaches.

The Game to Grow Method of Therapeutically Applied Role-Playing Games is a transdiagnostic, transtheoretical, group intervention developed over a decade of practice using Dungeons & Dragons and other popular tabletop role-playing game systems, as well as leveraging therapeutic factors from acceptance and commitment therapy, marriage and family therapy, drama therapy, and interpersonal process groups. TA-RPGs are conceptualized as a gaming system layered on top of established intervention techniques. They can accommodate a multitude of game systems and align with theoretical mechanisms for change found across therapeutic orientations. Tokens of Affection - Reclaiming Your Marriage After Postpartum Depression (Paperback): Karen Kleiman, Amy Wenzel Tokens of Affection - Reclaiming Your Marriage After Postpartum Depression (Paperback)
Karen Kleiman, Amy Wenzel
R997 Discovery Miles 9 970 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Postpartum depression is hard on a marriage. In their private practices, authors Karen Kleiman and Amy Wenzel often find themselves face-to-face with marriages that are suffocating, as if the depression has sucked the life out of a relationship that was only prepared for the anticipated joy of pending childbirth. What happens to marriage? Why do couples become angry, isolated, and disconnected? Tokens of Affection looks closely at marriages that have withstood the passing storm of depression and are now seeking, or in need of, direction back to their previous levels of functioning and connectedness. The reader is introduced to a model of collaboration that refers to 8 specific features, which guide postpartum couples back from depression. These features, framed as "Tokens," are based on marital therapy literature and serve as a reminder that these are not just communication skill-building techniques; they are gift-giving gestures on behalf of their relationship. A reparative resource, Tokens of Affection helps couples find renewed harmony, a solid relational ground, and reconnection.

Preventing the School-to-Prison Pipeline - A Public Health Approach for School Psychologists, Counselors, and Social Workers... Preventing the School-to-Prison Pipeline - A Public Health Approach for School Psychologists, Counselors, and Social Workers (Hardcover)
Charles Bartholomew
R4,009 Discovery Miles 40 090 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Preventing the School-to-Prison Pipeline is the first book written to provide school psychologists and other K-12 mental health professionals with knowledge and strategies intended to help them disrupt the criminalization of historically oppressed learners in today's classrooms. A phenomenon of the United States' intersecting education and criminal justice systems, the school-to-prison pipeline is the process by which school staff punish already marginalized or at-risk students-primarily Black youth-in ways that enable a lifetime of targeting by police, court, and carceral operations. Exploring the unmet needs of students with mental, emotional, and behavioral health disorders, the effects of implicit and explicit bias, adverse school and court policies, and other biopsychosocial factors, this powerful book offers a preventative, public-health approach to providing clinical care to vulnerable students without compromising school safety. School psychologists, counselors, and social workers will come away with urgent and actionable insights into advocacy, collaboration, preventive interventions, alternative discipline measures in schools, and more.

Identity Transformation and Posttraumatic Growth Following Traumatic Brain Injury and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder - An... Identity Transformation and Posttraumatic Growth Following Traumatic Brain Injury and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder - An Autoethnographic Inquiry (Hardcover)
Dee Phyllis Genetti
R4,018 Discovery Miles 40 180 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Identity Transformation and Posttraumatic Growth Following Traumatic Brain Injury and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder provides an autoethnographic qualitative study that portrays the author's recovery from a devastating life changing event - a car crash resulting in the hybrid diagnosis of TBI and PTSD, leading to PTG and identity transformation over a ten-year recovery period. In so doing, the text offers a comprehensive literature review on TBI, PTSD, PTG, and disability culture. Throughout, the author explores whether growth (PTG) and distress (PTSD), and whether TBI and PTSD can co-exist. Having lost her ability to read and write, the author had to learn how to learn, to heal and to have faith again. As a licensed trauma therapist and researcher, she collected self-observational data by writing her actual behaviors, thoughts and emotions in real time, both in a field and a process journal, even before she could write in full sentences. The many symptoms and co-morbidities of TBI, PTSD and the tenets of PTG are portrayed as they evolved in recovery showing the behavior and characteristics of each. The text refers to actual journal entries, medical records, and clinical notes from rehabilitation specialists, alternating between her clinical analysis and interpretation. The findings show that tragedy and suffering can lead to growth and positive change (PTG) after TBI, even though the precipitating trauma and psychological distress (PTSD) may persist for years. Changes are seen in self-perception, interpersonal relationships, and philosophies of life. This chronicled account of the author's emergent recovery from patient to doctor is intended to benefit neuro-rehabilitation service providers (neuropsychologists, primary care physicians, speech-language pathologists) and also mental health clinicians who can see the evolution of Posttraumatic Growth for what is now the new next step for many in PTSD recovery.

Basia Spalek, Mark Spalek
R1,204 Discovery Miles 12 040 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy: A Textbook is an engaging and comprehensive guide to integrative counselling, providing an explanation of the theoretical ideas underpinning person-centred, interpersonal, cognitive-behavioural (CBT) and hypnotherapeutic modalities. Divided in two major sections, this book first provides a detailed exploration of the key integrative concepts - presence, emotional and psychological processing, attachment, thinking, and the unconscious - and then practically applies these concepts to the issues commonly brought by clients to therapy. Personal Consultancy - A model for integrating counselling and coaching (Paperback, New): Nash Popovic, Debra Jinks Personal Consultancy - A model for integrating counselling and coaching (Paperback, New)
Nash Popovic, Debra Jinks
R1,161 Discovery Miles 11 610 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Making the case for an integrated approach to the practices of counselling, psychotherapy and coaching, Personal Consultancy provides a coherent and systematic framework for working with clients. Nash Popovic and Debra Jinks use their experience in the area of integrative practice to demonstrate how this wider approach can be a more comprehensive way of helping clients than coaching or counselling on its own. The authors explain how a range of techniques and approaches from various one-to-one practices can be brought together under the framework of Personal Consultancy, creating a method that is systematic, ethical and professional but not limited by any particular theoretical bias or preconceptions. With chapters by guest authors who discuss their perspectives on the approach and its application across various contexts, Personal Consultancy demonstrates that it is possible to combine the reparative work normally associated with counselling with the more proactive, goal-oriented approach of coaching. The result is a method that allows clients to have their counselling and their coaching needs met within one relationship and which allows the practitioner more flexibility and freedom than when using a single approach. Personal Consultancy will be essential reading for practicing coaches and counsellors, especially those already integrating the two approaches or those looking to do so, as well as students and those in training.
