Preventing the School-to-Prison Pipeline - A Public Health Approach for School Psychologists, Counselors, and Social Workers... Preventing the School-to-Prison Pipeline - A Public Health Approach for School Psychologists, Counselors, and Social Workers (Hardcover)
Charles Bartholomew
R4,009 Discovery Miles 40 090 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Preventing the School-to-Prison Pipeline is the first book written to provide school psychologists and other K-12 mental health professionals with knowledge and strategies intended to help them disrupt the criminalization of historically oppressed learners in today's classrooms. A phenomenon of the United States' intersecting education and criminal justice systems, the school-to-prison pipeline is the process by which school staff punish already marginalized or at-risk students-primarily Black youth-in ways that enable a lifetime of targeting by police, court, and carceral operations. Exploring the unmet needs of students with mental, emotional, and behavioral health disorders, the effects of implicit and explicit bias, adverse school and court policies, and other biopsychosocial factors, this powerful book offers a preventative, public-health approach to providing clinical care to vulnerable students without compromising school safety. School psychologists, counselors, and social workers will come away with urgent and actionable insights into advocacy, collaboration, preventive interventions, alternative discipline measures in schools, and more.

Identity Transformation and Posttraumatic Growth Following Traumatic Brain Injury and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder - An... Identity Transformation and Posttraumatic Growth Following Traumatic Brain Injury and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder - An Autoethnographic Inquiry (Hardcover)
Dee Phyllis Genetti
R4,018 Discovery Miles 40 180 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Identity Transformation and Posttraumatic Growth Following Traumatic Brain Injury and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder provides an autoethnographic qualitative study that portrays the author's recovery from a devastating life changing event - a car crash resulting in the hybrid diagnosis of TBI and PTSD, leading to PTG and identity transformation over a ten-year recovery period. In so doing, the text offers a comprehensive literature review on TBI, PTSD, PTG, and disability culture. Throughout, the author explores whether growth (PTG) and distress (PTSD), and whether TBI and PTSD can co-exist. Having lost her ability to read and write, the author had to learn how to learn, to heal and to have faith again. As a licensed trauma therapist and researcher, she collected self-observational data by writing her actual behaviors, thoughts and emotions in real time, both in a field and a process journal, even before she could write in full sentences. The many symptoms and co-morbidities of TBI, PTSD and the tenets of PTG are portrayed as they evolved in recovery showing the behavior and characteristics of each. The text refers to actual journal entries, medical records, and clinical notes from rehabilitation specialists, alternating between her clinical analysis and interpretation. The findings show that tragedy and suffering can lead to growth and positive change (PTG) after TBI, even though the precipitating trauma and psychological distress (PTSD) may persist for years. Changes are seen in self-perception, interpersonal relationships, and philosophies of life. This chronicled account of the author's emergent recovery from patient to doctor is intended to benefit neuro-rehabilitation service providers (neuropsychologists, primary care physicians, speech-language pathologists) and also mental health clinicians who can see the evolution of Posttraumatic Growth for what is now the new next step for many in PTSD recovery.

Personal Consultancy - A model for integrating counselling and coaching (Paperback, New): Nash Popovic, Debra Jinks Personal Consultancy - A model for integrating counselling and coaching (Paperback, New)
Nash Popovic, Debra Jinks
R1,161 Discovery Miles 11 610 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Making the case for an integrated approach to the practices of counselling, psychotherapy and coaching, Personal Consultancy provides a coherent and systematic framework for working with clients. Nash Popovic and Debra Jinks use their experience in the area of integrative practice to demonstrate how this wider approach can be a more comprehensive way of helping clients than coaching or counselling on its own. The authors explain how a range of techniques and approaches from various one-to-one practices can be brought together under the framework of Personal Consultancy, creating a method that is systematic, ethical and professional but not limited by any particular theoretical bias or preconceptions. With chapters by guest authors who discuss their perspectives on the approach and its application across various contexts, Personal Consultancy demonstrates that it is possible to combine the reparative work normally associated with counselling with the more proactive, goal-oriented approach of coaching. The result is a method that allows clients to have their counselling and their coaching needs met within one relationship and which allows the practitioner more flexibility and freedom than when using a single approach. Personal Consultancy will be essential reading for practicing coaches and counsellors, especially those already integrating the two approaches or those looking to do so, as well as students and those in training.

Values and Ethics of Industrial-Organizational Psychology (Hardcover, 3rd edition): Joel Lefkowitz Values and Ethics of Industrial-Organizational Psychology (Hardcover, 3rd edition)
Joel Lefkowitz
R4,044 Discovery Miles 40 440 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The book incorporates diverse perspectives into a "framework for taking moral action" based on learning points from each chapter. Examples and references have been updated throughout, and sections on moral psychology, economic justice, the "replicability crisis," and open science have been expanded and the "radical behavioral challenge" to ethical decision-making is critiqued. In fifteen clearly structured and theory-based chapters, the author also presents a variety of ethical incidents reported by practicing I-O psychologists. This is the ideal resource for Ethics and I-O courses at the graduate and doctoral level. Academics in Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management will also benefit from this book, as well as anyone interested in Ethics in Psychology and Business.

Applying the Therapeutic Function of Professional Supervision - Attending to the Emotional Impacts of Human Service Work... Applying the Therapeutic Function of Professional Supervision - Attending to the Emotional Impacts of Human Service Work (Hardcover)
Nicki Weld
R4,003 Discovery Miles 40 030 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book brings a fresh approach and conversation to the practice of professional supervision for human services by specifically articulating its often performed, but unnamed and under-explored therapeutic function. The discussion of the therapeutic function is timely given the rising complexities in our world, and the increasing awareness of emotional impacts of human service work. These impacts include stress, distress, emotional labour, indirect trauma, and direct trauma. Posing a challenge and invitation to supervisors to comfortably inhabit the therapeutic function of supervision to increase emotional support to workers, it places safe practice and worker wellbeing at the heart of supervision to enable high quality service delivery for often the most vulnerable in society. While underpinned by theory, it is written to be practically applied and is developed from a 'lived experience' perspective, offering a unique glimpse into actual practice. By modelling one of the main aims of professional supervision, which is to facilitate and enable the integration of experience into learning and knowledge, it will be of interest to all practitioners across a broad range of human services, particularly both new and experienced supervisors.

Companions in the Darkness - Seven Saints Who Struggled with Depression and Doubt (Paperback): Diana Gruver, Chuck Degroat Companions in the Darkness - Seven Saints Who Struggled with Depression and Doubt (Paperback)
Diana Gruver, Chuck Degroat
R350 R322 Discovery Miles 3 220 Save R28 (8%) Ships in 4 - 8 working days

The church's relationship with depression has been fraught: for centuries, depression was assumed to be evidence of personal sin or even demonic influence. The depressed have often been ostracized or institutionalized. In recent years the conversation has begun to change, and the stigma has lessened-but as anyone who suffers from depression knows, we still have a long way to go. In Companions in the Darkness, Diana Gruver looks back into church history and finds depression in the lives of some of our most beloved saints, including Martin Luther, Charles Spurgeon, Mother Teresa, and Martin Luther King Jr. Without trying to diagnose these figures from a distance, Gruver tells their stories in fresh ways, taking from each a particular lesson that can encourage or guide those who suffer today. Drawing on her own experience with depression, Gruver offers a wealth of practical wisdom both for those in the darkness and those who care for them. Not only can these saints teach us valuable lessons about the experience of depression, they can also be a source of hope and empathy for us today. They can be our companions in the darkness.

Healing the Male Psyche - Therapy as Initiation (Paperback): John Rowan Healing the Male Psyche - Therapy as Initiation (Paperback)
John Rowan
R1,359 Discovery Miles 13 590 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Much of what was once taken for granted about gender roles has shifted, leaving a lack of desirable or achievable roles for men. This text argues that the male psyche has been wounded by the new pressures of social uncertainty and needs to be healed. It explores the concept of masculinity using the work of Ken Wilber as a central guide and Jungian Alchemy as a framework within which to discuss the process of change. The way this change happens is personal to each man and involves aspects of the body, emotions, rational understanding and soul. However, because the change required is so major, what is needed is a continuous process that sees the man through the ups and downs, contradictions and paradoxes along the way. The therapeutic relationship is ideally suited to this task. The efficacy of therapy cannot be taken for granted and the author explores how different sorts of therapeutic intervention can hinder as well as help the processes of change.

Occupational Wholeness for Health and Wellbeing - A Guide to Re-thinking and Re-planning Life (Hardcover): Farzaneh Yazdani Occupational Wholeness for Health and Wellbeing - A Guide to Re-thinking and Re-planning Life (Hardcover)
Farzaneh Yazdani
R4,019 Discovery Miles 40 190 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This practical book introduces a new, research-based model of occupational wholeness, a way of conceptualising satisfaction with what one does to meet needs for being, belonging and becoming. It explores how to: conceptualise people's life stories through the model; take vital steps to help identify any problems; draw personal profiles; introduce intervention strategies for promoting wellbeing. Focusing on enhancing wellbeing, rather than ill health, the concept of occupational wholeness supports people to feel more control of their own lives and helps to identify what balance can be created, while recognising personal limitations and environmental restrictions. Alongside theoretical background, it includes practice applications and practical tools, with scenarios and activities to consolidate learning. Providing a unique combination of the practice and theory of occupational science, Yazdani integrates occupational science, psychology and sociology with clinical experience of working with diverse groups of people in different countries. This book is an important guide and reference for occupational therapists, occupational scientists, counsellors and life coaches.
